This is a mere preview of next month s Burgee, which will be dedicated to recapping the recent 63rd Annual Labor Day Regatta! Required election information for October prohibited any additional pictures this month! Happy Reading! Cheers! Lindsay Krienen From the Commodore Alan Pressman Fall is coming! The weather improves and the hurricane season marches on. It is only a short time until December 1 and the traditional end to the hurricane season. And once again it is election time at the Sailing Squadron. The Nominating Committee completed the bulk of its work in August and reported its candidate slate to the board. Since that time, a number of members have also thrown their hat into the ring. Tom Dieter is challenging incumbent Michelle Lee as Treasurer. Jason Roznos is contesting the position of Commodore and Barry Millbourn is running against Bill Niblock for Rear Commodore. And the position of Education coordinator has two candidates this year; Lindsay Krienen (our Burgee editor) and Dan Weidenhoft. So this year 2009, we will have a real election with more than a few positions contested. Elsewhere in this Burgee you will find a candidates forum. Election Judge, Nana Bosma has asked for some space in this issue of the Burgee so that the candidates have an opportunity to take their message directly to the members. Now the members can have a glimpse into what a candidate would bring to the game to earn your vote. This year, I would like to encourage every member of the Squadron to cast a ballot and have your voice heard. You can vote by mail or right up until the last minute before the balloting is closed and the votes begin to be tallied at the Annual General Membership meeting on November 22, At the September Board Meeting, a number of issues arose. We have had a survey conducted by Mark Liebel of Duncan Seawall on the condition of the Squadron docks. Three of our docks are in serious need of attention. Duncan Seawall s proposal for repair approaches $200,000. The most serious deficiencies were found on the main dock and this repair alone represents the largest expenditure with an estimated repair of $140,000. Mark returned to the September Board meeting to give us the opportunity to discuss conditions, options and cost. The Board voted to immediately undertake an emergency repair of the main dock to the tune of $2,600. A few additional pilings will be replaced as well. The Board determined that the major repairs would best be undertaken in (Continued page 4) Page 2

LUFFING LASSIES - CLASS OF 2009 Submitted by: Ellen McKeefe They are sailors now, 20 recent graduates of the Luffing Lassies Learn to Sail program offered every year just before Labor Day. Despite little or no wind for the entire week, it could have been worse. Remember shoveling dead fish from the beach during a Red Tide outbreak a few years ago? And we ve had hurricanes looming or tropical storms doing more damage than expected. And, yes, we ve had blissful weeks of low humidity, perfect winds and sunny skies. This wasn t one of them. Our winds were not so great, noted Captain Lisa Dodds, but we did get the gals out every day their spirits never wavered. It all starts with chalk board instructions but the goal is to get everyone out in a pram, on the water, every day for five days. Primary instructor Rita Steele and her assistant, Lorri Kaighin, had the new LL s on the water from day one even if they did not know a bowline from a barnacle. Terri Groening, a member of the Class of 2009, came away with this impression, We all had a lot of fun; having women teach women made the experience more relaxing and less scary! Terri has cruised on big boats and, loved the opportunity to learn how to sail my own boat in response to wind (when we had some!) New Lassie Jacki Booker had never sailed before but was totally comfortable and very happy while on the water. She added, I left the class feeling like I learned a lot, met a great group of gals who like some adventure and am now part of something that will help me appreciate the beautiful area where we live. Many LL s helped get the new sailors underway. A dedicated threesome, Julie Burnett, Michelle Lee and Linda Tiffan were there every day, all five days, providing skill and consistency, enthusiasm and humor. Encouragement and support on, off and in the water were offered freely by Captain Lisa, Elaine DeVito, Jane Owens, Barbara Greenwood, Marilyn Watkins, Margaret Swift, Daryl Lamb, Mindy Dinenberg, Betty Gottzandt, Susanne Koehnlein, Paula Davenport, Bridget Smith, Fran Mitchell, Patt Glinsek, Lucille Burke, Jo Dzina, Carol VanVleet, Dottie Schell, Carol McDowell, Fran Mericle and Gillian Whatmore. The continuity of the Luffing Lassies is evident among those who taught and asssited; nine former Captains and several former and present officers. So here s to sunny days and brisk winds for the Class of 2009; Sandy Benz, Jackie Booker, Christine Brown, Bonnie Byrne, Denise Crossley, Joan Engelbach, Nancy Fish, Mikal Frey, Dorothy Gibson, Terri Groening, Kristen Horler, Ann Lupo, Susan Mitchell, Nathalie Mould, Barbara Pye-Tia, Kim Ryan, Linda Schwartz, Tish Stanhope, Caroline Strickland and Robin Wall. Captain Lisa, commenting on some of the new sailors, summed up the week, They were always smiling. So, as is true each fall, every Thursday morning we will have new sailors on the race course. And it won t be long before some of them over take the Luffers and Salts among us. That s the plan and it works every year. Commodore (Continued) May 2010 when the sailing season slows and the demands on the docks decline. This will give time for all permitting, and for the Treasurer to present proposals for payment. In other developments, the Rules Committee headed by Board Member Bob Miller with committee members Cindy Clifton and Danny Weidenhoft presented their unanimous recommendations to the board to vote on, and in order to present them on the November ballot for voting by the general membership. The first recommendation was to codify the principal in the current Bylaws (noted by Nominating Committee Chairman Stan Zimmerman) that each membership at the Squadron has ONE vote in the Squadron elections, and that this rule was intended to give a single membership ONE vote if elected to the Board of Directors. The language change unanimously recommended was; Service on the Board of Directors can only be represented by one individual per Sarasota Sailing Squadron Membership. In a split decision, the board voted to disallow this question to come before the general membership for consideration and vote. The second recommendation that was unanimously recommended by the committee involved some changes in the role of various Director s positions. The specific language of this change is noted elsewhere in this Burgee and will be on the November ballot. The intention of this proposed change is to expand the role of the Education Coordinator to undertake a role of getting out the word and publicizing to the general public the many good and beneficial things the Squadron does for the Community. The other changes are a re-aligning of some of the tasks that the Board members are responsible for. The short take on this is that the Vice Commodore continues to oversee all racing activities, but is now able to shift some of this work to the Measurer, whose position in these proposed changes are now much more important and substantial and whose title would be changed to Regatta Director. This would enable the VC to be more involved with the Commodore on general Board duties and would encourage the movement of a Vice Commodore to the position of Commodore in the future. These changes have been discussed at the Squadron for a number of years, and now it seems, the Squadron membership will get a voice on this issue. (Continued page 4) Page 3

Commodore (Continued) The other significant issue at the September Board meeting was a change made regarding the Squadron s dock rules. In 2006, the dock rules were a pretty hot issue at the Squadron, and the board undertook to do a comprehensive review. I recall this process took three to four months and the Board gave the membership an opportunity to give input. At the end of this process we passed some pretty substantial changes and undertook a red and yellow painting of sections of the dock, and agreed on a revision of the rules for overnight stay. In September, member Brian Kelly, who spoke during member access time, asked that the 3 free overnight dock stays followed by 5 overnight stays at a nominal rate, followed by 5 nights away from the docks to reset the clock be changed to 4 nights away from the docks before resetting of the clock. This change would have the effect of enabling members to bring their boats onto the docks on Friday night, with free overnight stays of Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, then staying off the docks for four nights so as to be able to bring their boats back the following Friday at no charge for the following weekend. Essentially, members could have every weekend free for overnight dock stays at the docks during non-regatta times. The board decided to discuss this issue under new business later that evening. The board passed this Standing Rule change with the encouragement of a small group of fairly vocal members who attended the board meeting. I cannot say whether this was a good or bad rule change. My recommendation was to table this until the following month to allow time for the membership to be apprised of a potential change in dock rules. Three years ago we took four months to revise rules with membership input. To allow another month to let members know of a pending change and to receive member input and to analyze the potential impact from loss of dock fees seemed prudent. With a repair bill of almost $200,000 to repair docks looming ahead of us, it seemed to me like a good idea to take a more comprehensive look at the impact of any changes we might want to make that affects dock usage and cost. Our ongoing challenges to become compliant with our mooring field continue. This month I d like to share one of the many s I receive each month from members. I think the memo I received from member Mike Burwell and my response below will fill you in on some of the issues and misconceptions that surround our choices for mooring field compliance and our plans to resolve this complex problem. This text has been slightly excerpted for Burgee publication: Subject; A letter to the SSS board objecting to the confiscation of member's moorings at the SSS Alan, How many times over the past several years have you said to me,"nobody will loose a mooring?" So now I read in the Burgee that once the SSS gets the lease for the mooring field, "...every mooring holder would be in essence trespassing. The Squadron would then ask each mooring holder to grant (don't you mean surrender?) their mooring gear to the Sailing Squadron in exchange for a rental agreement (lease) from the Squadron." "In the event a mooring holder does not wish to hand over their gear and obtain a lease, said member could remove their gear and vacate the field". I have a few questions. What is the value of this "rental agreement" you want to give us for our moorings? Is a cement block worth the same as a screw anchor? How long will it be until you begin to charge us for using the equipment we "granted" to the Squadron? Until I see a guarantee that no member of the SSS will lose access to their mooring and see some equity in the exchange of our equipment for a lease, I do not intend to surrender anything. I am expecting some timely answers to these questions. Mike Burwell Mike, Thanks for your in response to the mooring field maneuverings that I reported in (the August) Burgee. I cannot recount to you how many times I would have said to you that no one would "lose a mooring" at the Sailing Squadron. I don't know that I have ever said that to you or to anyone else at any time. It has never been within the power of either the Squadron or any Board Member to guarantee the future of the boats within the mooring field. What I do believe I said was that the Squadron would not and could not "take" a mooring from any mooring holder as the Squadron does not now, nor has it ever had "control" of the field, and therefore has no authority to take a mooring. To the best of my knowledge, I don't believe a mooring has been "taken" by the Squadron. (Continued page 5) Page 4

Commodore (Continued) The facts in this case have not changed during these many years of interaction with the State of Florida. The unassailable fact is that the state of FL believes that the Sarasota Sailing Squadron has allowed its members to essentially trespass on its state waters. They believe that we are "squatting" and that we have created a situation in Sarasota wherein the Sailing Squadron is "out of compliance" with state regulations and rights. Whether the "Squadron" has done this or whether individual members have done this on their own, is one of the issues surrounding whether the Squadron will be required to pay a $13,000 Consent Order as penalty. This "trespassing" allegation has created an environment in which the City of Sarasota has for a second year, declined to enter into a long term lease renewal for our uplands facility until we work out our problems with the State. I have last week requested and this morning have just received a draft agreement for our second one year lease renewal, which was offered as a short term solution by the City to give the Squadron time to work out its State problem. They wanted us to resolve this in one year. We have failed. We are exercising our option to resolve this and are buying time in the form of an additional one year extension on our lease. The state has essentially told us that "we are out of compliance" with usage rights on its waters. They believe the mooring holders/sailing Squadron is trespassing on state waters. They have attempted to have us sign a Consent Order, which would obligate us to pay a fine of $13,000 for our errant ways. We have tried since 2000 to work this mooring field process with the State by utilizing the volunteer services of Squadron members, but in 2008, the board decided that professional legal services were required. Member and local attorney, David Levin is working on our behalf in this matter. Commodore MacCay and Secretary Jennings worked with him during 2008 and Dave Jennings and I have worked with Dave Levin this year. Last Friday, late afternoon, while the Squadron was gearing up for its Labor Day Regatta, the three of us were working late at the law offices of Icard Merrill reviewing the latest batch of documents received from the State. Due to some research done by Dave L, he has made a compelling case to the state to mitigate this fine, and I have learned this week that the State may in fact waive its claim to this assessment. The $13,000 penalty may be going away. In order for the Squadron to become compliant with the state, we must resolve this Consent Order (sign and pay the fine, if any, and any administrative costs they may claim), and then we can enter into a TUA, Temporary Use Agreement with the State. This agreement buys us one year to become compliant and allows the City to enter into a lease agreement with the Squadron for its uplands facilities. Here are the ONLY options which have been presented to the Squadron by the State: 1. Advise the State that we do not intend to move forward to secure a submerged lands lease with the State for 120 moorings, and we have 90 days to remove all moorings except for the original 38. This is a non-starter because we do not have records to identify the original 38 and we do not have authority to cause mooring holders to vacate or otherwise effect the removal of these moored boats and mooring gear. Failure to act may ultimately cause all 120 moorings to be removed by the State. 2. Retain the unauthorized structures and activities and ultimately bring them under a fee-waived lease agreement with some conditions. This requires that the City of Sarasota become a co-applicant with us and that the Squadron enter into a management agreement with the City to be authorized to "manage" our mooring field. This would allow us to retain all 120 moorings. In exchange for having a fee waived lease (this means NO state rental fee) we will have to make the mooring field available on a RENTAL BASIS ONLY and on a "first come first served" basis. It means that lease terms cannot be longer than one year. We believe this means that prior to the end of a one year lease agreement, the Squadron can notify the lessee and ask them if they wish to enter into another 1 year lease agreement. If they decline, they no longer have lessee rights to the mooring. The most troublesome aspect of this (No Fee) deal is that the moorings will have to be made available to everyone--not just members of the Squadron but members of the general public. We understand that we will have to set the same rental rate for members and non members but can also upcharge an additional fee to non-members for uplands facilities and for dinghy storage. This rate to non members for uplands services, etc. can be set "reasonably" high so that the difference in annual expense to the mooring holder will largely incentivise the non member to become a member and save a bundle. 3. The final alternative, is to retain the... structures and activities (Keep all 120 moorings) and enter into a fee based lease directly with the state. The first proposed fee based rate we received from the state was estimated to be in excess of $130,000. This is substantially more that the Squadron pays the City for its entire annual uplands lease. You may recall that the Board took extraordinary steps this past spring to elicit input from members as to which way to go on our State Problem. (Continued page 6) Page 5

Commodore (Continued) We have been telegraphing a steady message that the majority of the Squadron and the board would like to keep its 120 moorings, and that the members at large do not want to subsidize the costs of the mooring field for the mooring holders, and that the mooring holders do not want to vacate their moorings, but many do not want to pay much to keep their moorings either. The solution we are pursuing is and has always been number 2. If you go back and look at my Burgee articles and comments during Board Meetings which are in the minutes, you will see that we have been consistent with this avenue, but you will also note that I have always maintained that the Squadron is facing BAD CHOICES. But unfortunately, these are the ONLY choices that the State will consider. If you would come to the Mooring Committee meetings, you would see the progress being made by the volunteers to develop a mooring field management plan, a suitable rate structure, setting of fees, and analysis of cost. And you too would have the ability to input your own suggestions and ideas to this process, so that you (and any other mooring holder who wishes to attend) could have a direct impact on how the Squadron proceeds in this vitally important process which will literally define our future. In order to manage the field in a manner consistent with the wishes of the City (our landlord and partner in a co-managed mooring field) we will need to show that we have safe moorings (defined as screw moorings) and that they are inspected and maintained. As a lease holder of the State s mooring field, (the Squadron) will not have the right to convey individual mooring spaces to anyone. We will merely have the right to lease out the space on a one year and renewable lease agreement. (The text of the lease agreement for individual mooring holders has been the subject of discussion at the mooring committee meetings. You can have input into this process as well. There is a draft lease agreement which was submitted to the City and State years ago.) When the State grants our Temporary Use Agreement, we believe this will give us authority to manager our own mooring field. We still need to see this final document in order to state this unequivocally. We can theoretically begin to actively manage the mooring field at that time. The process of this has not been yet determined, and is in fact part of the discussion that occurs at the Mooring Field Committee meetings. Once the TUA is granted, this legal document will not change the fact that in the view of the State of Florida EVERY MOORING HOLDER is in effect TRESPASSING on State waters. In order that the mooring holders not be trespassing, they will have two choices; vacate the area or apply to become a leaseholder. Our Management Agreement with the City will require many things. One is that we will need to insure that all boats are on safe tackle to minimize the Squadron's and the City and State's significant liability. We will need insurance and the insurance company will need assurances that the ground tackle meets certain minimum standards. We may be required to have the entire field converted over to 100% screw type anchors within 4-5 years. We have about 20% of the fleet on screws now. These will continue to need inspections and maintenance. The costs for installation of new screws and maintenance of the old gear will be borne by the mooring holders of the Squadron and will be paid for from proceeds from the mooring holders' lease payments. (The Mooring Committee has been working for weeks on a proforma budget.) Mike, you have titled your subject bar in this to me; "A letter to the SSS board objecting to the confiscation of member's moorings at the SSS" I am surprised at the title you've chosen. The implication is that the Sailing Squadron or the Board of Directors is engaging in a wholesale confiscation of member's moorings. I'll address your other questions specifically; "What is the value of this "rental agreement" you want to give us for our moorings?" Mike, you too are a volunteer and have every right and all the opportunity to help craft a solution and shepherd the process along to produce an outcome that will be of greatest benefit to the greatest number of members at the Squadron. I do not see this in terms of what you want to give us. The value of the rental agreement is "X" and is unknown. It is renewable annually and it will have a cost. Whether this cost will exceed the cost for a mooring holder to inspect, install, and maintain his mooring on his own is unknown at this point. And Dinghy Access Fees are on the table at the committee level for a possible adjustment, so these costs are a moving target at this point. If a mooring holder does not have a rental agreement for his or her mooring, the Lease Agreement with the State will render that moored boat as "trespassing". The value of trespassing mooring gear will be "less than X". Is a cement block worth the same as a screw anchor? The only solution that I have seen presented to get the existing mooring holders into a lease for a mooring, and based on the first come first served basis that is required, is for a moor- (Continued page 7) Page 6

Commodore (Continued) ing holder to sign a bill of sale, for a nominal amount ($1.00) to turn the gear, regardless of the condition or type, over to Squadron control and ownership. Alternatively, if a member wishes to keep his or her gear, they can remove it and take it out of the field. I see no reason that they cannot still apply to be a lessee of the mooring field But for arguments' sake, if the 20% of the mooring holders who currently have screws all wish to remove them and not deed them to the club, and then have the Squadron install new screws in their spots, the budget which was used to estimate and ultimately determine rental rates will have to have a major re-adjustment as we will have 4-5 years to replace all 120 moorings rather than the 4-5 years to replace 80% which we estimate will require replacement. This would potentially increase the rental rate to each mooring holder. (One would have to ask, what would be the value of gear that would be removed and is "used"? Seems like a lot of labor and trouble to take out "used" gear to save a few hundred dollars which amortized over the next few years would amount to very little.) How long will it be until you begin to charge us for using the equipment we "granted" to the Squadron? The best answer I can offer (as discussed above) is that it is up to the Squadron members, and this decision should in my view, collectively be decided at the mooring field committee level. There are pros and cons to starting this process sooner rather than later. They need to be fully discussed and understood and they need to be compliant with the Lease Agreement with the State and with the Management Agreement with the City, neither of which we have seen in final form yet. Until I see a guarantee that no member of the SSS will lose access to their mooring and see some equity in the exchange of our equipment for a lease, I do not intend to surrender anything. What equitable exchange have you proposed that the Mooring Committee can consider for exchange of your mooring gear? Mike, I understand your feeling on this, but I hope you understand a little bit better, that we have very poor choices from the State of Florida. I do not see that the Squadron or any member has the power to guarantee that access will continue forever. If the state decides that they will not grant our lease for 120 moorings (fee based or fee waived) we will all be considered trespassing. They then expect the Squadron to remove or cause to be removed all but 38 moorings WITHIN 90 DAYS. They are not kidding around! I do not see how the Squadron has the ability let alone the authority to determine which 82 must go or to actually "force" the 82 out. If we do not get a Submerged Lands Lease from the state, that is EXACTLY what the State and the City will demand. I can foresee the Sarasota Marine Police putting green stickers on 82 boats (whose boats, I do not know) demanding that they be removed within thirty days or that they will be removed by the authorities (and taken to the crushers ). The alternative to pay rent for the moorings ($131,000. to start) has been pretty much resoundingly rejected by the membership. So the only viable course that I can see is to play ball with the City and State, keep the 120, obtain a fee waiver, and have the members deed over their gear in exchange for a one year renewable lease agreement. I have spent literally hundreds of hours on this and David Jennings has spent substantially more to try to work a solution to a difficult problem. "I" am not the guy that is trying to charge "you" anything as your suggests. I am just the guy who is trying to help resolve this dispute between the Squadron and the State in the best possible way and to help arrive at collective judgment calls with the help of other volunteers who also want this resolved. I am hopeful that with this discussion from me, you can better appreciate the position that the Squadron finds itself in and can understand some of the nuances of our situation. Alternatively, you have an open forum to present an alternative solution to this issue. I look forward to reading it. Remember, if we fail to resolve this by November 2010, it is very likely that the City will not renew our uplands lease at all. Literally, the very future of the Sailing Squadron is at stake. If you have other solutions, I am always open to hear them and I believe I have always responded to your s in a "timely manner". And of course, you would be most welcome to attend the Mooring Committee meetings held every first Tuesday of the month at 6PM by Fleet Captain Sara Allen. Regards, Alan Now if I still have you, dear reader with me, it s time to put this thing down and make some time to get out there and GO SAILING! Page 7

Ball Busters Submitted by Pat Murphy SQUADRON DATE Another one of those days in which Mother Nature plays tricks. It looked like as the morning progressed that we had a massive rainstorm approaching from the west, however, it never materialized until later in the afternoon and I don t know where it came from then. Ron and Eddie came with Eddie doing the bar with the Nordstrom s (Chuck & Ruth) helping him. Later they sanded the banister at the Pavilion for future varnishing. Eddie had been absent for the last two Wednesday s as his driver, Ron had to work at the Lighthouse for the Blind in Manatee County. Don also was there and with Ron they hung a wall hanger (a wood/string ship) on the porch. The big action was with Sid Mann and Allan Titcombe who took the plywood off the long aluminum framed ramp to the floating dock off the south dock and attached 2 X 6 supports underneath making it firmer and less bouncy. Dennis O Brien came back from his longtime summer job in the northeast at a camp where he takes care of the on water sailing activities. He constructed an extension to provide more leverage for the L shaped arm on the hoist so hoist users can move the jib crane without breaking their gut. After that he helped Sid and Allan with their project. The Burgee - October 2009 IN MEMORIAM On August 21 the Squadron lost another name from the past, Don Bolt, 76 who served as Commodore in 1982 and successfully made the transition from a very rocky period in the history of Commodoreships. Don and several other people were responsible for doing the preparatory work in opening up and getting the Squadron started on the road to where it is now. Don worked at Electro-Mechanical Research on Fruitville Road as did several other members at the time. Don was known as the Whisper Jet because he spoke with a whisper due to cancer of his larynx. At the Murphy Memorial Retirement Party in September he told me as he had told me before that he was supposed to have been the first one of our group of stalwarts to have died and he hadn t yet. I guess it finally caught up with him. He spent years traveling to Gainsville for medical treatment, usually cryosurgery which gave him another 27 years or so of life. After his term as Commodore he went to the Sarasota County Vo Tech to learn how to weld and then came to the Squadron and built its first BBQ cooker that was much like the one presently used except being built entirely of steel. This was a donation. The Squadron bought the steel and he provided the labor for free. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Carolyn. Don & Carolyn were married at the Squadron in the first wedding that was performed there that I know of. The wood work of the new north porch had just been finished and in a light steady rain he and Carol stepped through where the screen would be, walked out (Continued page 28) VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! 28 BALLBUSTERS (CONTINUED) to just beyond where the Pavilion is today, and were married. They wrote their own ceremony. It was very simple, beautiful and something to be remembered forever. IN MEMORIAM Former member, Jack Linville, died of emphysema recently at age 57 in Ohio where he had been living for some time. Jack was Fleet Captain in 1985 and was an early FFOF member who sponsored a Jam Session for guitar players on Wednesday evenings at the Squadron when he was in town. He along with his wife of the time Helen owned Spindrift Sails about 20 years ago. They built sails and did canvas work for various members as well as the Squadron. They built the first curtains for the Squadron porch, which lasted at least 15 or more years. He will be missed. IN MEMORIAM Joanne Hawkes father, John Reis died recently at the age of 86. He and his wife lived in Punta Gorda for many years. He was a retired policeman and will be missed by his many friends and family. SQUADRON DATE An overcast day with intermitten light rain all morning. Ruth Nordman and Sid Mann helped Eddie stock the bar while her husband, Chuck helped me shovel sand and shell out of the small launching ramp area into the golf cart trailer and then into as many pot holes as we could. It will take at least a couple times to complete the job if then, as every time it rains car traffic just knocks it out of the pot holes. Ron and Don with the assistance of Chris Mera continued sorting tool stuff in the lockers in the back with the aim of organizing it into something meaningful. Dennis O Brien and Brian Clark cleaned the BBQ area and cooking units for the upcoming Labor Day Regatta this weekend. I left about 11 am and some of the guys, Chris, Dennis, etc. helped Chuck Nordman finish as FLYING SCOT STATE CHAMPS NEED VOLUNTEERS! The weekend of November 7th and 8th is the annual regatta we host for the Flying Scot class s Florida State series. We re looking for a few good sailors to help with Race Committee, and to set marks for this regatta. If you took the US Sailing RC course, this is a great opportunity to get some experience on Race Committee. Allan Broadribb, one of the most experienced PRO s in the country, will be running our races. much of the job as they could. SQUADRON DATE An interesting sequence of numbers. It s getting a little cooler early in the morning, unfortunately it doesn t last long. Eddie was assisted by his crew of the past, Chuck & Ruth Nordman who when they finished helping him stock the bar went out to the main gate and pulled out weeds and other unwanted vegetation. Sid Mann, Dennis O Brien and Chris Mera worked on attaching bumper type material on the piling at the Wave Fence whose bolts had exposed nuts due to excessive abrasion by tied up boats due to strong easterly winds in the morning, spring and fall and maybe even in the winter. Dennis earlier had fixed a water pipe supporting a hose Bibb so it would not break. Ron & Don continued sorting tools and screws in the Work Area. SQUADRON DATE Don St. Clair, believe it or not, was the earliest arrival of all the Ballbusters. Ron and Eddie came next and with the usual dedication Eddie got right to work stocking the bar as did Wanda Purzycki. Brian Clark arrived a bit late, he comes from farther down 41, and helped Eddie take care of the bar, carried out cardboard trash and then installed a much needed photo cell on the gate lights which had been on 24/7 for quite a while. Sid Mann, Chris Mera and Dennis O Brien continued installing fend-offs on the piling of the wave fence. I cut a 5/8 s inch rod for installing next week on the main dock, ordered a replacement ramp pipe for the ramp leading to the Pontoon Boat and left early to take Dona to the building from hell. However, after sitting for a half hour in the waiting room we were told that they were at least one hour behind and as there were two people ahead of us Dona decided to come back next week. We need 3 volunteers to raise flags, toot horns, and record finishes on the RC boat. We also need a 2-person crew with some experience to set the course marks and starting line. There will be 5 races total, usually 3 on Saturday, and 2 on Sunday. We usually have 25 or 30 boats. Come on out, meet a great fleet of sailors, have dinner on us, and help the Squadron continue our great reputation for running high quality regattas. Please contact Ron Pletsch at or Regattafam@aol.com if you can help. Page 28

TO ALL MEMBERS A FRIENDLY REMINDER When there is no room in the parking lot, please park outside the gate. If you absolutely must park in front of someone s boat, please leave your keys in the car, so it can be moved if needed. Blocking someone's boat may lead to your car being towed at your own expense. Thank you. NOTICES: No spray painting until further notice. If you have not received your Squadron invoice for 2009, please jhawkes13@aol.com with your address, street address, and phone number(s). Don t forget The Squadron s policy is that all contractors must have 1 million dollars in liability insurance, with the Squadron listed as the additional insured. Examples of this are: working for others on Squadron property or the mooring field, charging people to sail, etc. HELP NEEDED! The burgee needs you! In need of someone to gather information on a monthly basis for The Burgee. Includes Notice of Race(s), pictures, information, basically anything and everything! Have a kid in the YSP? Contributing to a monthly publication would be great for high school or college students looking to add to their extra curricular activities. The pay stinks, (as there isn t any) but kudos are GUARANTEED! Please sailingemma@hotmail.com. 31 American Red Cross Adult Learn-to-Sail Program On Record Setting Pace The Red Cross sailing program recently started its fifth class series for the year. All of this year s classes have been at or near capacity. With only one more basic course to be offered this year, the program is poised to set a new enrollment record. Beth Bush, Director of Preparedness and Health & Safety Services for the local Red Cross chapter said, We have received really positive feedback from the students who have completed courses throughout 2009 and are so grateful for our partnership with the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, which contributes greatly to the program s success. The resurgence of activity could not happen at a better time. With strained budgets and private donations reduced, the learn-to-sail program brings much needed revenue to support the Preparedness and Health & Safety programs the Southwest Florida Chapter offers in the local community. Volunteers have put in hundreds of hours of maintenance to re-condition the program s Bauer 12 s. The boats sat idle for a couple of years and were in need of some TLC said Jeff Carlson, lead volunteer for the program. The boats are much happier now that they are getting regular exercise. Carlson added, There is still more to do and volunteers are always needed to assist with the program, whether it involves the equipment or teaching. The sailing program offers basic thru advanced courses. This fall, an intermediate course was added to make a more logical progression from the beginner level up to more advanced concepts in boat-handling. We found a number of students wanted a course offering that would allow them to reinforce the basic skills before jumping in the deep end, said Carlson. This also makes them eligible to receive their US Sailing certification in addition the American Red Cross certificate. The next basic course will begin in October. Currently the courses are taught by Jeff Carlson and Dave Pedersen who are both US Sailing certified and American Red Cross authorized instructors. Dave is a club member and Waterfront Manager at New College. Teaching assistants include Carol Van Vleet who is a graduate of the Red Cross sailing program and went on to receive her US Sailing certification as well. Part of the class schedule includes a tour of the Sailing Squadron and a presentation on the benefits of club membership. We feel it is essential to educate them not only about sailing, but the opportunities in the Sarasota area as well, said Carlson. We hope all club members take the time to make these new sailors feel welcome to the squadron and to the world of sailing. If you are interested in helping with the American Red Cross sailing program, please contact your local Red Cross at sailing@usa.redcross.org or call Beth Bush at x247. Volunteer of the Month "THANK YOU CHARLIE BALL! The Sarasota Sailing Squadron, its Board of Directors and the general membership would like to express their heartfelt thanks to member and Attorney Charles Ball. Charlie" has been there time and again to assist the Squadron in all matters legal. His willingness to give of his time is over and above the call of duty. Thank you, Charlie for all your sage counsel, from all of us at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron! Page 31
