6 Novi Boat Show Calms Winter Blues by Lt Dara Brooks, P & D/Lt Bill Smith, AP, D9 Boat Show Coordinator Novi Boat Show March 14 th -17 th Held at the Suburban Collection Showplace this event running for the last twenty-seven years is the key place during Michigan s winter months to start thinking about spring. The D9 Power Squadrons have been an important part of the show introducing boaters and prospective boaters alike to courses that will help them maximize their enjoyment of our wonderful Michigan waterways. The D9 boat simulator was a great attraction giving users a sense of maneuvering a vessel on water. According to D9 Boat Show Coordinator D/Lt Bill Smith, AP, The Novi Boat Show is the last indoor show of the winter season where many boats and accessories are sold at a great discount. This year Harborside Market was added to the event. The Harborside Market & Novi Boat Show was actually two shows in one featuring quality products from premium vendors for lakefront property and boat owners. Thanks to photographers Lt/C Darlene Weber, AP and Lt Delphine Cooley, S we can see that DPS and D9 participated wholeheartedly in the event as seen in the photos on this page. Shown below is DPS member Lt Mike Murphree having fun operating the boat simulator with BPS member Lt Bob Blau, SN-CN overseeing. Two Lansing Sail and Power Squadron members, Commander Philip White, N and P/D/C Dawn Flynn, JN are between Mike and Maureen with Bob next to Bill in the photo above. According to D/Lt Smith, There was some cool looking lawn furniture and lots of all types of watercraft everywhere. I also met a very attractive mermaid with brilliant red hair at the show. 5

8 COMMANDER S MESSAGE The Blessing of the Fleet, a traditional Lenten service held annually at Mariner's Church on Jefferson in was very moving indeed. Many squadrons, boat clubs, and individuals presented their burgees and flags to be placed on the alter and blessed. The church was bursting at the seams with people! Imagine, a choir of 11 heavenly voices filling a vaulted ceiling with beautiful harmonies and praises to God, with a 78-tank pipe organ for accompaniment! As a choir member of the Knox Presbyterian Church I was in awe of their clarity, tone and power. Their voices and music was a "balm" for the soul. Singing familiar hymns such as the Mariner's Hymn, Amazing Grace, and the Recessional Hymn- O God Our Help in Ages Past (a particular favorite of mine) inspired me to do a little harmonizing myself. Special recognition was given to all the servicemen and/woman and veterans present. Lined up four rows deep cascading across the width of the church, it was an impressive and humbling sight to behold. As Commander of the it was an honor to represent our membership and accept the grace, mercy, and safety that only our Lord, Jesus Christ can provide for this year's boating season and the seasons to come. And a special thank you to Delphine and Vince Cooley who also attended. 7

9 IT S TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS Spring is in the air and it s time to start thinking seriously about preparing our vessels for the coming boating season. In conjunction with removing the shrink wrap and winterizing fluids, airing it out, fueling it up and falling in love with it all over again we have to think safety. That means the peace of mind that goes with knowing you are vulnerable to breaking down or getting a citation while on the water. Make sure your vessel meets federal safety standards and that in an emergency you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and call for help. And by calling for help keep in mind that when you are away from land the cell phone is not your first line of defense. Each year, having a Vessel Safety Check is the most painless way of starting the season. In many cases boating insurance agencies offer discounts for vessels which undergo an annual VSC. What Type of Items Are Checked? Life Jackets Registration and numbering Navigation lights Ventilation Fire extinguishers Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.) Battery cover and connections You may be asking yourself, What If I Don't Pass? Don t worry, the Vessel Safety Examiner is there to point out issues to you so that you have an opportunity to correct them before the report is filed. This written report can be taken with you to your local marine store making it easy to obtain missing safety items and easily pass a re-inspection. Some vendors offer a discount on items purchased if you show your examiner-signed VSC report. Contact the and schedule a VSC for your vessel. The following is the contact information for our Vessel Safety Examiners Directors who will put you in touch with an examiner in your area: P/C Mitchell Gawyrsiak, JN and Lt/C Nancy Nevins. S mitchnan@comcast.net (586) Commander Wendy Caldwell, S DPS Presents Our Annual FLARE DEMO DAY at the Yacht Club Saturday, April 27th 9:30amt Come out and understand how important flares can be to you when having an emergency on your boat and need assistance. Learn the proper way of lighting, handling and maintaining your flares. Bring your own expired flares to practice with. DPS will also supply expired flares for anyone to light who has not had an opportunity to light any thus preparing the user for any real life emergency. During Memorial Day Weekend the spends 3 days on property conducting Vessel Safety Examinations free of charge. The Squadron is also on premises at other marinas throughout the summer. To arrange for your appointment please contact Nancy right away to get on the schedule early. Remember, all decals and safety checks are void December 31st of the year they are inspected so don t assume that since you had one in 2018 it is still valid. Keep in mind that VSCs are no guarantee of regulatory or safety compliance if the operator/owner fails to make the necessary changes or maintain the vessel or its equipment to the standard at the time of the VSC. 8

10 DPS GATHERING OF SNOW BIRDS by P/C Joe Tatham, SN Technology News After lots of time planning, designing, creative thinking and hard work DPS has launched our new website. Completely redesigned we wanted a "more inviting" and brighter look. The repositioning of buttons for important links makes it easier to find links to such areas as our Educational Department, Officers, Dumping Grounds, Event Calendar, Vessel Safety Checks and a wealth of resources for anyone interested in boating. We enthusiastically invite you to log onto our site at Some members of the Squadron like to go south and avoid part (or all) of our Michigan winters. Shown here are (from left to right by row) Marge Tatham, Dara Brooks, Joyce Strey, Mary Fritz, Sally Lemus, P/C Joe Tatham, P/C Joe Brooks and LeRoy Strey at the winter home of Joyce and LeRoy Strey. The group enjoyed the hospitality of the Streys and some great picnic-style food provided by Joyce and LeRoy. And as can be seen, they enjoyed the sunshine too! After several hours of talking, it was decided that this reunion should be an annual affair. So if you happen to be in FL next winter, look for the announcement of the next DPS South reunion. Any comments or ideas contact: DPS Secretary Lt/C Nancy Nevins, S; DPS Webmaster Lt Bob Estabrook, AP; DPS Facebook Administrator Lt Delphine Cooley, S or myself. Commander Wendy Caldwell, S D9 Fall Conference Proposals Keep in mind that no details are available on access to audio visual equipment or room size until the team securing the location of the conference works out the details and has made their announcement. This pre-work will give the hosting squadron an idea of what to prepare for and any special requirements requested. It will also give all squadrons a sense of what to expect at the conference. We thank you in advance for your consideration. (refer to page1 for details) 9
