1 THE MAINSHEET Vol. 36 No. 7 July, 2007 Cheney Lake, Kansas Well, I just got back on Sunday from being out of town for two weeks and it appears that monsoon season is still with us. Your Club Burgee and your Commodore s flag has been proudly flown in the BVI for the last eight days. What a trip. We had great breeze, beaches, boat drinks and three boatloads of fellow club members with which to sail. We can t wait to do it again, it s been 13 years since the last one and it won t be that long again. As several Board Members were out of town on the date for the regularly scheduled July 5 BOG meeting, a quorum was not present so official business was not taken up and completed. We will meet next at the Afterdeck on August 2. We have had a few recent occasions where the Property Manager has had to close and shut down the Afterdeck multiple times in the same afternoon all after six pm on a Sunday. Please be diligent about making sure that the building systems are shut down and the slip and yard gates are locked. My own personal rule of thumb is that a) if I had to unlock it or start up the systems when I entered, I sure should be the one to shut down and relock; and, b) if there are only a few cars left around, I ll look for people on the slips or in the yards and seeing none, I assume that things need to be closed and locked and will do so. After all, our members who belong in the various facilities all should have keys to unlock the gates even if they inadvertently get locked inside. I d rather be safe than sorry. See you at the lake! HIGH WATER CLEANUP EFFORTS A SUCCESS Several members responded to the Rapid Communication Hub and came out the weekend of June 23 to help clean up after the recent high water at Cheney Reservoir. They raked up several truck loads of debris and hauled it off, including Driftwood, Junk, Flotsam, and Jetsam. There was some difficulty in determining what exactly was Flotsam and what was Jetsam, so they just threw it all away. It was hard work, and messy, but many people helped out and got the job done well. Such volunteer efforts are much appreciated by the Board and all the members who enjoy our beautiful facility. 2 Board of Governors Minutes Board of Governors Ninnescah Sailing Association July 5, 2007 Board members present: Shull, Woodward, Huffman and Graves. Club members present: Gerken, Adams and Johnson - Meeting called to order at 7:05 pm at Quincy s by Commodore Elect, Woodward. - Due to unexpected and unavoidable absences, five Board members required to constitute a quorum were not present. Even though general discussions were conducted concerning many issues including slip, dock and crane maintenance, bookkeeping and accounting procedures, and club boat replacement, no actions were taken because of the lack of a quorum. - The meeting adjourned at 8:30. - The next Board meeting will be August 2 at 7:00 pm at the Afterdeck. - The monthly BOG breakfast will be July 17 at 7:am at the Beacon. - The Long Range Planning Committee will meet July 26 at 7:00 pm at Quincy s. WEATHER STATION COMING TO CHENEY STATE PARK Friends of Cheney, Gregg Greenwood, President, is accepting tax deductible donations to install a sophisticated weather station at Cheney State Park. The equipment will relay real-time data on wind speed and direction, temperature, rainfall, barometric pressure, and humidity from a location on Stone s Jetty. This data will be transmitted to a satellite uplink in the NSA s Afterdeck building and be available to anyone with access to the Internet. Accurate weather data will be useful to anyone who uses the lake: all boaters, campers, fishermen, and folks who have friends or family at the lake will be able to see what current conditions are as well as recent hourly trends for wind gusts, temperature, etc. The location for the instruments is well away from obstructions on shore and should provide the most accurate information possible. Friends of Cheney is a non-profit Kansas corporation established for the purpose of providing facilities and projects to benefit the Cheney State Park and park guests. It is hoped that funds can be raised so that the Weather Station will be operational this summer. Heather Coulter provided treats, as did Joan Gibson. Narration of the History was by Rich Shull, with Carla Shull providing color. Pat Coulter ran the DVD player, which is more difficult than it sounds. A good time was had by all... The next new member function will be held the 2nd week of August. Members of the committee will call you as this will be your opportunity to meet the Board of Governors. Enjoy the July sailing. 3 USODA GREAT PLAINS CHAMPIONSHIP I followed the Yellow Brick Road to the State of Kansas where the Cheney State Park can be found. There in the middle of no where was a huge lake surrounded by a vast and beautiful forest. And boy, does this Cheney Lake give a blow! Everything there was perfect for sailing; the conditions enabled me to experience both light and heavy winds the days we were there. One day it blew between 5-10 and the second day Opti sailing in Kansas was definitely different, but it really met my expectations. Before getting there, I thought because it was in the middle of the country there would be no wind and bad sailing conditions. I was definitely wrong. There was even enough room to have 200 to 400 opti sailors there. The park was spacious and huge! What, a great place! We stayed in the one-room park cabins. This was really cool and there was even air conditiong in them. We had a campfire every night and sat by the fire. The race committee put on a great regatta with plenty of races. The yacht club, was really nice too and was designed just like a log cabin. There were also lots of great prizes for all the sailors that attended. Everybody that was there won something. The trophies were fabulous too. They were these really cool spiraled tornados and for the girls there were the famous legendary Dorothy red shoes. Every girl should have one! Nationals one day would be great in Kansas because you can definitely always count on the wind at some point every day and because so many families could fit there easily! It would definitely be great time for all the Opti families to have a camping experience together and they could have the hugest campfire ever. I only wish more people would have come because this was really a great place to sail. Definitely, more families should consider this regatta next summer. Those Great Plains can really blow in Kansas and you must know Kansas is definitely, the best kept secret! Pearson B. It is in color, and you can still print out your own copy if you wish. Every subscription we enlist will save the NSA time and money that we can use for other projects, and it will help keep your dues from increasing more. * Work Days A Club workday is planned for August 18 Security Concerns at NSA With summertime in full swing, the Park and the Sailing Association facilities are experiencing lots of visitors. It is important that we safeguard our assets by keeping a watchful eye on security considerations: Keep unattended yards locked. If you are leaving a yard and you are the last one out, go ahead and lock the gate. This keeps non-members from meddling with the boats, and indicates to visitors that our vessels are kept secured. If non-members are seen where they do not belong, report the situation to the Property Manager, a Board Member, or the Park Authorities. If you need a Yard Key, see the Property Manager. Keep unattended Slips locked. If you are out on the water, it is good practice to have a slip key in case the gate gets locked while you are gone. Again, non-members seen where they do not belong should be reported. If you are leaving the facility late in the day, and notice that slip gates or yard gates have been left open, take a moment and lock them up. Afterdeck Guidelines Our beautiful Afterdeck building has been utilized for numerous functions of late. All members are welcome to use the building, and need to remember a few rules and guidelines: * If you are the last one out, lock the building. Check all the doors and make sure they are latched. Turn off all lites, fans, air conditioners, and the coffee maker. Then lock the entry door with your key on the way out. * To turn off the air conditioners, move the slide switch to the off position at the thermostats. There is one in the kitchen, and one in the hallway by the bathrooms. Just put the switch to Off. This will greatly reduce operating costs. * If you are not familiar with the building or the procedures to use it, see the Property Manager, or attend an Afterdeck Orienta tion session. * Members are encouraged to see that their children are familiar with the rules for the use of the building. * Remember, take your trash out with you, and clean up after yourself. That way everyone can use the building anytime and not have to take care of someone else s mess. Following these few suggestions is greatly appreciated. 8 ANNOUNCING - THE NSA ARBORETUM The members of the Ninnescah Sailing Association have long been involved with the improvement and beautification of the Cheney State Park Sailing Center. Plans are now being made for the establishment of the NSA Arboretum: a long term, planned, irrigated, transplanted tree and shrub program for the NSA facility. The Membership have planted hundreds of trees over the years, some of which are now matured, and many of which have been lost to storms and other natural causes. A generous grant by a member has been made to help fund the first phase of this program. The first trees will be transplanted in the fall, and will be trees of good size, and appropriate species for the area. Each tree will be on a drip watering system. We are working with a local nurseryman to obtain good quality specimens at competitive prices. The Friends of Cheney organization, a non-profit corporation of Cheney State Park supporters, has offered to sponsor the Arboretum fundraising. Tax deductible donations are being accepted for the NSA Arboretum. Those folks who would like to contribute may donate to the: Friends of Cheney 1239 Denmark Wichita, KS Note NSA Arboretum on the check. If you would like to fund a single tree and memorialize a loved one, the amount should be $300 or more. Attach a note with the name of the person in whose memory the tree will be planted.
