Full story next month. Also welcome Vail Scott and his new column Who s Who? on page 6. Cover shot from Windjammer regatta 2/2010, found on Sailmonster.com. Cheers! Lindsay Krienen From the Commodore One Saturday two weeks ago I arrived at the Sailing Squadron to see the racers off for the race to Venice Yacht Club. The winds were howling but a dozen or so hearty souls with crew aboard went through New Pass to the start of the race. Jim Alan Pressman Barr and crew of four were brave (??) enough to take out Big Ben to act as race committee to get the fleet started. Winds were about 25 to 30 knots and gusting higher. Jim had to anchor Big Ben and then had some difficulty retrieving the anchor to head back to the barn. It was dicey, and Big Jim went down on Big Ben, slid across the deck and then back to the helm where he popped up again on his feet and back at the wheel. Amazing that with all the water they took on and the big seas that were running, that Jim managed not to roll Ben. The crew arrived at the office, wet, soggy and a little shaky, but thanks to Jim s prudent seamanship, brought all home safely. This points out the need to be sure all crew have adequate life jackets before leaving the docks as well as all safety equipment that is required by the USCG and dictated by good seamanship. And remember, Big Ben with her shiny NEW Mercury 150 hp power plant is pretty much a coastal boat. She is not designed for big seas and offshore conditions. So, if you are on Ben, or any boat for that matter, and have any concern about the suitability of the vessel for the conditions, then prudence is the better option. Don t venture off the docks if you are unsure of the safety of you, your crew and your vessel. This month we have had some communication with the State about the status or our Submerged Lands Lease in the mooring field. The State has apparently had their staff get up to speed on the issue and they ve reviewed the concerns we expressed in our November response to their draft TUA and have made some proposals that seem promising. Secretary David Jennings, attorney David Levin and I have reviewed the documents and are trying to set a meeting between the three of us for this week to examine their proposal and to determine the best response. It seems we are once again moving forward and not dead in the water as it appeared in December and January. We ll keep you posted. And as I mentioned in the last Burgee, the Board has authorized David J and I to meet with the Mayor and City Commissioners to make our case for de-linking the issues of the Submerged Lands Lease with the State and our Uplands Lease with the City. I expect that once we have formulated a response to the State, David and I can set meetings with the City. It is our goal to enter into a new and long term Uplands Lease with the City of Sarasota prior to the expiration of our current lease in November (Continued page 16)

LUFFING LASSIES Ellen McKeefe Sailing in a Winter Wonderland North Florida had snow. We did not see any snowflakes but we did have to scrape ice from our windshields and get through some record-setting cold spells, both in temperature and duration. Sure, we missed a few days on the water, it was just too cold and windy. But when we did go out we had some wild rides. And safety boats have been busy. The Salty Sisters and Broad Reachers came down from St. Pete one gusty Thursday morning. Fran Mericle was on a safety boat, There were so many near capsizing, so close. Gillian (Whatmore) and Michelle (Lee) had some near misses it was wild out there. No one went in the water. It was a challenging day and they all rose to the occasion. Robin Wall took second in the pram competition, bracketed by two Salties. Fran was on the Mako with skipper Elaine DeVito and Renata Mamula. A couple of weeks later someone did go in the water. Pram Captain Linda Schwartz found herself in 55-degree Sarasota Bay between races. Momentary inattention and a gust of wind caused her pram to flip. Dottie Schell and Fran fished her out and took her back to the Squadron in a safety boat. A hot shower restored feeling to Linda s fingers and toes. Speaking of Dottie, our Sunfish Captain, and Linda, we owe them thanks and atta-girls for all the times they step in and make our sailing experience better. Most recently they worked with Captain Lisa when our sail locker was repaired. The flooring had become more like a trampoline. Nancy and Joanne in the Squadron office loaned us the adjacent storage area so new SSS maintenance man Nelson could replace the floor. Dottie and Linda took on the task of moving dozens of sails and rudders and centerboards from one locker to another. Of course they found some mystery sails and other stray equipment. I m surprised that s all they found. Chaos has been replaced by order. Thank you Dottie and Linda and Lisa. And SSS staff. Jib, Lisa, Linda, Suzy, Rita & Dottie OPPI set up, Tom and Gillian The Burgee - March 2010 The new OPPI s arrived on a trailer one chilly morning. The day before Lisa asked for helpers to unload and set up the new boats. Tom Schwartz stood in for his spouse. Tom was joined by Gillian, Robin, Cathy Cartier, Paula Davenport, Leila Benyozszky and, of course, Lisa. Job well done, OPPI s ready to sail. Another chapter of LL history is underway. The Sarasota Sailing Squadron will host the Sunfish Midwinters from March 11 through 13. Many LL s will help Regatta Chair Cindy Clifton with multiple tasks from slinging hash and serving beer to registration and race committee. Whenever SSS hosts these major Sunfish events, volunteers have front row seats for world class racing right here on Sarasota Bay. And speaking of world class racing, our own Rita Steele has booked a place to stay in Punta Ala this coming June when the Sunfish Worlds take place. Where? Punta Ala is on the Tyrrhenian Sea, opposite Elba on the west coast of Italy. It is a popular sailing center for Europeans, about 100 miles southwest of Florence. At this writing Rita is hoping for a wild card bid as she did not qualify in the traditional manner. Rita has some history with the Worlds, I sailed the Worlds in Sayville on Long Island (1998,) qualified but did not go to Colombia (1997) and Puerto Rico (1999.) And I sailed the Worlds here in Sarasota (2000.) My best finish was an 18 th here and my best finish at Sayville was 54 th, a hurricane went by during the event and they still sailed. Closer to home, Rita was third overall at the Inaugural Charlotte Harbor Regatta in early February. The only woman competing among 13 Sunfish in some unusually strong winter winds, to quote the regatta web page. (Rita s daughter, Donna, won all three Laser races on the final day and won the class.) Another hot shot sailor babe, Ursula Olson, is benched while she recovers from knee surgery. I m healing nicely, says Ursula, just have to take it easy for another month or so, then I hope to be back. We look forward to seeing Ursula and her flower hat back on the water soon. And let s hope that water is a little warmer. # # # # Page 3

FLYING SCOT FLEET 36 NEWS Submitted by: Bob Twinem Jan 31 Race Report This is Florida, darn it, and we just had to have a race in January. Thanks to Race Committee Chuck K and Skip, a half dozen Scots enjoyed racing on Sunday on beautiful Sarasota Bay. Conditions were rather chilly for the faithful and a nice 15+ breeze kept us on our toes. First race was a nice beat... SPLASH (cold water down the neck)... across... BASH (bucket of water in the smiling face)... the bay (course windward leeward, g-b-g) As the fleet worked to windward across the bay it became clear that 3 up was the call of the day. Things were great, boats tacking on shifts, hiking hard, when we all arrived somewhere between mark A & mark C only to find mark B among the Missing...GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!. We did have a nice Mike & Nick planing spinnaker run back across the bay to set up and try again. For the next race the wind had veered so that Mark I was optimally placed. We could see it was on station so off we went for a nice fast loop around the course. Eightball prevailed in conditions to her liking. The Roberts, showing nice style with 3 up, were pushing all the way for a 2nd, followed closely by Snowbird and then Peter and Robin Walls. Jeff Penfield and the Wruks probably showed some sense and headed in a little early. That looked good to the rest of us as we headed in after Jeff only 2 races. Feb 6-7 saw the first annual Port Charlotte Harbor Regatta. The club to our south is starting a Flying Scot fleet and they put on a great regatta in trying conditions. As with most of January, Saturday was blown out and crews spent the afternoon enjoying libations on terra firma. Sunday brought beautiful conditions for 4 races for the 11 boats participating. 3 boats from our squadron trailered down and somehow managed to get an extra winter race date in. Well done. Currently there are about 30 Flying Scots at the Squadron. About 15 or so race in varying degrees of frequency. We are interested to learn what the rest of you are doing with your boats. Flying Scots are great day sailors, do you day sail? Are you interested in racing? Are you looking to sell your boat? Would you like to be on an list to receive info on fleet 36 Flying Scot activities? Do you need help with your boat? Repair? Technique? Come on down on any race date and meet a few Flying Scot sailors or give a call or . When you are at the Squadron, check out the bulletin board dedicated to Flying Scots for information. Tip of the day: Don t allow the boats behind you to sail away from you into good wind you don t get. Page 4

By: Vail Scott five months and he traveled 50,000 miles. Some of the ports -of call were Sidney Australia; Singapore; Hong Kong; Tokyo; San Francisco; Southampton, England and Capetown, South Africa. During these travels, Deval began to collect and build the models now on display at the Sailing Squadron. Get to know your fellow sailors! Do you know the story behind those beautiful models of historical sailboats mounted on the walls in the SSS office? Where they came from or who made them? I was in the office the other day when this fellow sauntered in and SSS Member, Deval King & sat down. I soon learned his name is Deval America King. He explained that he donated most of the models on display in the office. He either made them from kits or purchased them on his various trips around the world. We encouraged Deval to tell us his story. One of the most elegant models on display, Deval said, is a replica of Cutty Sark the fastest and greatest of the old tea Clippers built in 1869 which sailed between England and India carrying spices. In May 2007 the original Cutty Sark burned but has since been restored. Other models on display in the Squadron office include: He is originally from New Orleans where he learned to sail when he was about nine years old. A year or so later, in 1949, he won the Pan American Regatta in an eleven foot Moth sailboat named Razzmatazz. In 1969 Deval came to Sarasota to accept a job teaching History at New Directions High School and Mc Intosh Junior High. He arrived on Labor Day trailering a Flying Dutchman sailboat and immediately found the Sailing Squadron. He recalls that the Squadron was in the midst of hosting the Labor Day Regatta with something like 275 boats participating. Over the years Deval owned and raced a 26 ft. Columbian named Sara Saloon and a 30 ft. Morgan named Tranquility. In 1980 Deval retired from teaching to embark on a more adventuresome career as a boat captain. He piloted a 59 ft. excursion boat Tropic Star in the inland waters around Fort Meyers, from Bokeelia Harbor to Boca Grande to Cayo Costa Island. Deval says that some of the most lavish resorts are to be found in Pine Island Sound, including Cabbage Key and Useppa Island which are actually Indian burial grounds. In 1997 Deval moved to England where he stayed until the year During this three year period Deval traveled extensively throughout the British Isles including the Isle of Wight, South Hampton, Portsmouth and Greenwich on the Thames river southeast of London. In 2007 Deval sailed around the world on Queen Elizabeth II. This voyage lasted The Santa Maria, was Christopher Columbus s flagship in which he discovered America in It is distinguishable because it was one of the first sailing ships to successfully sail upwind. Bill Johnson has spent considerable time in putting together a number of courses that will be used on our Friday night races and maybe Sunday as well. These courses have been designed to take into account most of our prevailing winds on the Bay. They will be published and available for you to print out on the SSS website in the very near future. Once finalized, we will be laminating them and you can purchase one for $2.00. The Windsurfer regatta was just completed and the Pot O Gold regatta is scheduled for the first weekend in March. We will be hosting the Sunfish Mid-Winters starting on Wednesday March 11th and continuing thru the weekend. Over 150 guests will be taking advantage of our fabulous sailing facility. The following week beginning on the 19th, the One-Design Mid-Winters will be out on the Bay and over 60 entries are expected to compete. The Friday Night race series kicks off on Friday March 26th when we combine one of our Howl at the Moon races with a Jack Attack. Check out the NOR for this event on the website. This will be a fun evening and the race will end at Marina Jacks where each captain that makes it to the finish line will get their first drink (make that a well drink or A short Sunday Series called Spring Tune-up is scheduled for March, 7, 21 & 28th. The start will be at IC-13 at 1pm. We only have two Motley BOTY races left and Sunday March 14th is the next one up. These pursuit starts often result in a number of boats being within a few minutes of each other at the finish line. All sailors are welcome to participate in all of our sailing events even if you do not have a West Florida PHRF certificate. We would, however, encourage you to join our local PHRF organization by contributing $40.00 and getting registered. Contact me if you have any questions about joining PHRF. See you at the Starting Line Capt n Blew Bayou Bob Miller.. So far this year has been unusually and unseasonably cold. With temperatures often in the 40 s it has been just too chilly for me to venture out on the water. We are really spoiled. For perspective, all I need is a call from an old friend from up north to hear about the 2 feet of snow on the ground and I realize that it s really better here in Florida, even when we are tempted to think otherwise. Commodore (Continued) degrees. So on Sunday morning, with foulies on and picnic basket in tow we approached the dinghy docks for the obligatory row out to the mooring. With the cold winds biting at our faces, she looked and me and I at her and when she said How about breakfast in downtown Sarasota instead? I beat a hasty retreat back to the car with her not far behind. Two weeks ago, my wife and I had planned for an overnight weekend cruise, and after seeing the big winds on Saturday we decided to hold off and make it a Sunday daysail as the winds were forecast to return to 20 knots or so. What we didn t know was that the temperature would drop another 15 But this weekend it is forecast to be better and we will try again. And I hope that the weather improves and that you will try too. So find the time, brave the elements and get out there and go sailing in the big winds of March. - Alan Page 16

Ball Busters Submitted by Pat Murphy BALLBUSTER S FEBRUARY 2010 SQUADRON DATE I dumped Dona off at Sarasota Memorial Radiology lab for a CT Scan and Mylogram at 6:45 a.m. this morning and after registration I was on my way to the Squadron getting there about an hour before our early arriving Ballbuster s, Ron & Eddie. Eddie, John Mason and Wanda masterfully took care of the Bar as usual while Ron & Don St. Clair moved a whole bunch of Christmas stuff off the top of the Walk-In and into two unused lockers on the second floor of the large Small Boat Storage structure. Dennis Morgan, from Canada, cut a bunch of Sea Grape & Beach Apopka out of the roadway into the Small Boat Storage area at the Water Gate. Dennis O Brien and Alan Titcombe, without the aid of Sid Mann as he was picking up people at the airport, topped off the gas tanks in all boats and replaced a bilge pump hose on the Mako. They found that the siphoning device for safely transferring gas from a can into the Pontoon Boat without sucking on the hose and getting a mouth-full of gas (doesn t taste good) was gone? Please bring it back or I guess we have to buy another one? They manufactured a poor substitute out of a trashed garden hose for the present. Bob Menendez, one of the early arrivals replaced two rubber rollers on two floating docks. The first one was easy the other was not as the metal rod had to be cut out with a hacksaw. But the job was done. Carl Meyers and Frank Zimmerman walked behind all boats with 5 gallon buckets and picked up trash of all sorts. Chuck & Ruth Nordman, resting up from cutting up kindling last week, oiled all the tools that they could find in the work area. Drills, saws, hammers, etc. They also put a defunct vacuum cleaner behind the Dumpster for pickup tomorrow morning by someone who will recycle it for us. Stu Barnette as he could not work on the small keg cooler (some fiberglass work needs to be done by you-know-who) walked throughout the property picking up NO GOOD METAL and moving it behind the Dumpster for pick-up tomorrow. John Dougherty, Gerd Boysen, Bill Waggener, Chris Mera and Tom Catero continued digging shell & sand out of the south launching ramp (a very low tide) and filling the numerous potholes created by the weeks rains. They also picked up the yard debris generated at the Water Gate. SQUADRON DATE Our early arrivers as usual were Ron and Eddie, Eddie along with John Mason and Wanda did their usual at the bar getting it squared away. Alan Titcombe and Dennis O Brien took Big Ben with it s brand new engine with several 6 gallon gas tanks to Marine Max for gas after gassing all boats. Afterwards they tried to fix a broken antenna only discover that the antenna was broken internally so they got the office to order a new one. They also drained rain water out of a horn mounted on the cabin top of Big Ben that had been left pointed at the moon for a long time and changed the angle so it would not fill with water again. The Dougherty Crew, (John Dougherty), Chris Mera, Bill Waggener, HAT Pollux and friend Eddie continued digging shell and sand out of the small launching ramp and filling potholes in the road. Every time it rains car traffic produces lots of potholes which need to be filled. They really did a job this time. Ron & Don changed out the batteries in 5 or so smoke detectors and made sure that they were working. Several members put the tables and chairs on the porch back to where they belong after the last Board Meeting. HAT Pollux besides doing the above fixed a torn screen on the major east entrance to the front porch with the skill of a professional screener. Hall Burnette did a variety of things and stopped by ALRO METALS to determine what kind of Aluminum he needed to finish rehabbing the small keg cooler. He then called me and gave me the dimensions he needed. SQUADRON DATE I stopped by ALRO METALS on 12th Street this morning on my way to the Squadron and picked up a 2 by 4 piece of aluminum 22 long for the keg cooler and consequently arrived at the Squadron after Eddie and Ron. Ron was making coffee and Eddie was busy stocking the beer coolers as usual. Wanda came and did her usual inventorying and stocking the bar along with Ruth Nordman who also did some cleanup. Her husband, Chuck, cleaned all the model boats in the office most of which had been built and donated to the Squadron by past Commodore Duval King. Dennis O Brien and Sid Mann gassed all the boats first. Sid had to leave due to prior commitments. So Dennis picked up junk on the property everywhere. As a road grader from the past, Gary Harney, had graded all the roads early this week I took the Dougherty ramp workers, John, Chris Mera and Larry MacMillian over to the old Radio Station Tower base and we picked up and moved all the rocks and boulders exposed by the extremely low water level due to the very cold intense Norther that moved in last night. The north wind and high pressure drove much of the bay water out into the Gulf laying flats bare like they haven t been in a long time. Sam Baroda, who also works at West Marine, cleaned the blades of all the fans in the clubhouse and porch. Brian,, continued rehabbing (adding new rub rail) the Squadron dinghy and said he would be done today. He had one more job to do (cut off the stainless screws holding the rub rail on). SQUADRON DATE I wasn t here so I don t know much about what went on. I was in Miami with Dona getting her ready for a back operation that was to happen on Friday early in the morning. I understand that several Ballbuster s worked on the aluminum floating docks, cutting out some bad bolts, while others helped Nelson (Kacy s replacement) put ¾ inch pressure treated plywood into the Luffing Lassies storage area and paint everything gray, including the ramp that had been reply-wooded months ago. Some others were involved in digging up Brazilian Peppers and putting them in the dumpster. Ruth & Chuck Nordman helped Wanda and Eddie do their bar duty and Ron & Don began cutting out plywood inserts for the recycle garbage cans in the clubhouse. Hal Burnette completed his work on the Small Keg Cooler reattaching the door in a different manner. It s now a sliding door not a swinging door. Getting back to Miami. We went down on Tuesday after depositing our Poodle, Noel, with a kennel and went to the Hospital for an appointment with the Anesthesiologist, the Finance Department, and then with the Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Williams. All of this took most of the day. As Dona has great difficulty walking we used the valet parking to take care of the van. The first two appointments were in the main area of Jackson Memorial the cost was $15.00 for 1-3 hours and $20.00 for anything over that. Our visit there was about 5 hours long. We next went to the clinic section of the Page 17

BALLBUSTERS (CONTINUED) hospital which was cheaper, only $8.00 (not the $3.00 like at Sarasota Memorial). On Thursday, Dona wanted to visit the rehabilitation area where she thinks she will be for maybe two weeks (she hopes). We passed several hospital parking areas that had large signs that said PARKING LOT FULL so we dumped Dona out at the Hospitals main entrance. I found a more affordable place to put the car and we both started walking. This hospital is the biggest I have ever seen and spread out with several buildings at this location and other complexes in other parts of Miami also. I pushed Dona for a while when she got tired and eventually we found the rehabilitation section. The lobby had about a hundred or more people sitting in chairs and I m sorry to say, they didn t look very good. Dona wanted to see where she would be, but there was no way that could be permitted. So we left. Fortunately by this time we found out how to get out of the place without walking back to where we started. On Friday, the day of surgery, we had to be there by 6:00 am so we left the Hotel at 5:30 am for a trip of ¼ mile. To make the story shorter I was in pre-op with Dona while she was grilled by several nurses, the anesthesiologist, and surgeon. Because she is on coumadin her Cardiologist in Sarasota had prescribed that she be off coumadin for one day and onto lovenox for two. The lovenox being a bridge. She s done this before several times with no problem. The Team at Jackson felt that she should have been on Lovenox longer and had her blood tested. They decided to proceed with the operation with the aid of another chemical additive(?)and began sedating her for the operation and moved her to the operating room for surgery. They then got results of the test and immediately stopped the procedure. Dr. Williams came down to the BUPA area (where they keep the concerned families in a state of arrested animation due to the freezing temperature) and told me that her blood took 30 minutes to clot when it should only be 6 minutes or under. I thought then that he would tell me to take her home and repeat all the tests, procedures, etc. that she has been undergoing for the last month, however, he said they would keep her and work on her and get her ready for the operation probably by next Monday or Wednesday. I was able to see Dona twice in the post-op area later and told her I would go home and come down later before the operation. However, on Monday at 1:25 pm she called and said that they were going to do the operation this afternoon, that shocked me, I had my bag packed and ready to go but needed time to find a kennel for Noel. She had been very concerned about the procedures but sounded very confident now and told me not to attempt to come down. Dr. Williams called me just before 3:00 pm to alert me and said he would give me a call when it was over. He did, about 10:12 pm. A seven hour operation with the Orthopedic surgeon operating on the Lumbar area of her back and a Neurosurgeon completing the surgery on the front side by entering through the sides in a minimally invasive procedure( very small incisions) that he had done several times. Somehow they were able to connect the two broken rods that were causing Dona so much pain. It s now Wednesday, about 3 pm. I haven t spoken to Dona yet as she has had a tube down her throat and is in the Intensive Care unit which has no telephones. I have talked to her nurse several times and to Dr. Williams also and have been told she is doing fine. Legs move, and so does everything else. She may go to a room on Friday. We ll find out. SQUADRON DATE Well, this edition of the Ballbuster activities on Wednesday is late unfortunately and as I m back in Sarasota I was at the Work Party today and here is what happened to the best of my ability. Ron & Eddie arrived long after I who arrived long after Wanda who had already been working at the bar and nearly completed everything necessary. Alan Titcombe, Larry MacMillian and Hal Burnete (along with Bill Waggener) worked on attempting to attach two aluminum floating docks at the farthest angular joint where the malfunctioning bolts had been cut out of last Wednesday. The crew cut larger holes (entry areas) into the top of the dock so they could insert the necessary bolts, which I bought at Sarasota Hardware on the way home as is usual as we never have exactly what we need to do the job. Ron & John Mason (as Don was not here (his son was in town)) continuing making plywood inserts for bar trash cans and were aided by Sid Mann. Chuck & Ruth Nordman bailed out 3 Bauer 10 s over by the south fence that had filled with water that was totally green with algae and other crud. Chuck also put logs or supports under the front sections so that they will drain in the future. Brian Clark also scraped barnacles of the dinghy that he had rehabbed in preparation for bottom paint if we can find some.
