Lindsay Krienen From the Commodore In the dog days of summer it is exceedingly difficult to get motivated to sail. Temperatures are predicted to rise to 96 degrees today and the late afternoon rain pattern has for the most part returned. But racing continues at the Squadron and summer sailing camp moves forward for the kids. Our annual Labor Day Regatta is scheduled to take Alan Pressman place on September 3-5. I am told that this is the 64th running of this event which makes it one of the longest running sailing events in the United States. In last month s Burgee, I issued a call to action so that members could offer their support of Squadron efforts to secure a long term renewal of our lease with the City of Sarasota. David Jennings and I have completed our first round of meetings at City Hall. We ve met with Mayor Kirschner, Commissioners Atkins, Atwell, Clapp, and Turner and have met with staff members Brown and Shanley. We have asked them for their support in entering into a new lease with the Sailing Squadron on a long term basis. It is always difficult to know where one stands after this type of meeting, but both David and I are encouraged that there is a willingness to move ahead with a long term lease not linked to progress on securing a Sovereign Submerged Land Lease with the State. Part two of this will emerge shortly, and that is the potential for a rate increase. My call to action was intended to pack the halls at an upcoming City Commission meeting and to have any number of members speak on behalf of our efforts for a long term lease. Given the positive response we ve received, we have made the decision to shift strategy a bit. Rather than have 30 speakers take their allotted three minute slots with the halls packed with Squadron members and dominate a City Commission session, we think it may be more prudent to begin to drip the Squadron message (Dave Jennings term, not mine) to the Commission over the next few months. This would be achieved by having one or two speakers at each session with twenty or so Squadron members in attendance and providing support. Last week, we began phase one of this approach. We asked David Livingston of the SYSP to speak, and as there are only three weeks left of summer camp, he extended an invitation to the Commissioners to come out to the club to see what goes on each year. There were about a dozen Squadron supporters in attendance at the time. Today, I am working on phase two of this approach, which is to request that two members who are affiliated with racing and women s sailing plan to speak at the upcoming August 16 City Commission meeting. I d like to ask Squadron members to plan to attend. We d like to see twenty or so as a show of support. It is scheduled for 6PM in the evening. The speakers will be extending an invitation for the Commissioners to visit during our 64th Annual Labor Day Regatta. We are starting to see some letters coming in to the Mayor and the City Commissioners from members showing support for a long term lease. 3 Annual Learn-to-Sail Begins August 30 th Ellen McKeefe Every August a new crop of Luffing Lassies joins our ranks and learns to sail. Or they brush up their old sailing skills that have not been used for a while. Women-teaching-women-to-sail is a concept that works on many levels. There s still time to reserve a space in the 2010 class which will be conducted at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron from August 30 th through September 3 rd. Orientation, on Thursday, August 26 th will prepare potential sailors for the week of instruction. LL officers and veterans will describe the learning process and what a beginning sailor needs in terms of attire, supplies and commitment. Are you interested or do you know a woman who wants to learn to sail? You must be able to swim. You will get wet every day. You will break fingernails and get bruised. You will not be judged on your fashion statement nor your hairdo. You will wear a hat and sunscreen, closed-toe water shoes, shorts and t-shirts. And always a life jacket. You will learn a new vocabulary. Halyard and vang and clew. Starboard and port, jibe and tack. Oh, and luff. And you will have fun. And you will meet dozens of women who went through this week of training last year or five years ago. Or ten or twenty years ago. Those women will wade out and help you get your boat headed in the right direction. They will call out advice and tips as they sail near you. They will cheer when you get it. LL Captain Linda Schwartz, Lorri Kaighin will be our instructor and the new gals will spend the first few days in a 420 with an experienced skipper. This is a new concept but we think this will be a great way to get everyone familiar with wind direction and how a sailboat works. The 420 experience will give our new sailors the one-onone, in-boat explanations of our sailing environment. Their last couple of days will be spent in a Pram where they will have hands-on, solo experience. We all remember our class week and remain friends with LL s who shared that week with us. Linda describes her week, Time on the water was made somewhat easier because we had LL s in boats sailing around and helping us out. The hovering Lassies as a safety net were an important part of my experience. Upon completion of the LTS week, most graduates join the Luffing Lassies and sail with us every Thursday morning at the Squadron. More information on the LL s Learn to Sail week is readily available by contacting Linda at lschwa2138@aol.com or or Summer sailing is a good break from the heat. Wednesday night dinghy racing and Saturday afternoon fun sails are regular LL summer gatherings. Watch for s or check with Sunfish Captain Dottie Schell for times and other info. 4 so. You will again find the mailing and addresses elsewhere in this Burgee. Over the next few months we will learn about what our new lease is likely to look like and specifically what the cost will be. Last month I asked a few board members to get some information about what other clubs pay for rental. Vice Commodore John Huber was quick to get some good information. It was interesting to learn that our neighbors at David Island have about 580 members and they have just entered into a new lease with their landlord (the City of Tampa and the Tampa Airport Authority). Their lease will run for 50 years for ONE DOLLAR per year. They are required to provide 9,000 hours of volunteer community service in exchange for this generous lease. Last year, they logged 36,000 hours of service, which is four times the required amount. And community service is not necessarily picking up trash in downtown Tampa, but is considered services to promote sailing, such as volunteering for race committee, and for hours spent during their weekly take someone sailing events which are designed to get more folks out on the water and exposed to this wonderful activity. The City of Tampa seems to place a high value on getting folks involved with the sailing life and apparently recognizes the positive impact on their community. We d like to see the City of Sarasota take a similar attitude towards our efforts here at the Sailing Squadron. And the St. Pete Sailing Center pays NO rent as they are fully supported by the St Pete Yacht Club. All members of Commodore (Continued) the St. Pete Yacht Club are automatically members of the Sailing Center. Maybe our friends at the Sarasota Yacht Club would be interested in talking to us about fully underwriting our organization too. But the point is, we currently pay the City in the neighborhood of 10% of our revenue for rent. And the Non- City members who pay a premium over the City Resident rate helps subsidize the membership of City members. If the rate that the City wants to charge increases to the levels that were discussed and then tabled two years ago, this would amount to over 25% of our current operating expense. And if membership is reduced due to members dropping out as a result of higher annual fees, this percentage of rent to total revenue could exceed 30 or even 40%. No business that I am aware of, with the possible exception of California s medical marijuana providers, can handle rental rates upwards of 25% and remain financially viable. We will know soon enough about what our lease will look like so standby for more information. I am sorry to report that there has been no response from the State since the last Burgee about our pending action to secure a Sovereign Submerged Land Lease in the mooring field. It is my understanding that the Florida DEP has its hands full with the Gulf Oil Spill and that mooring field actions are on the back burner for the moment. 5 FLYING SCOT FLEET 36 NEWS Submitted by: Bob Twinem Well, once again it is still summer and there is not a lot to report. But there is some to report so here goes. We have continued on racing with the locals through the summer months. Each race date the sailing weather has been great. The putting the boat away, weather in the lot has been too hot! Still, well worth the effort and of course it is great to see our sailing buddies when we can. After having our boat for about 5 years we took it in our 1st Friday night race last week. We had a beautiful 5 mile race up and down the bay with the PHRF fleet. Ron and Barry in the FOR SALE white boat and us in Eightball actually beat most of the regular PHRFers. It being Friday eve, the race was followed by some cool ones and some great stories, bragging etc at the squadron. We had a person out for their first sail ever on our boat and there was no better way to introduce a newbie to the sport. We are heading out again this weekend for some more racing and rumors are that Patchwork Princess and American Dream will be out! During July John and Susan D trailered over to the North American Championships in Mississippi. They report back that it was great to be on vacation, it was fun to see a bunch of friends, it was fun to eat and enjoy a few libations. All of that was good. Unfortunately the weather for a regatta was atrocious. No wind, too much wind, rain etc. They spent a lot of time on the water with limited counting races. Undoubtedly this will create some pent up demand for great racing in a beautiful location when the Flying Scot Midwinter Regatta comes to the Squadron next spring. We are send all our best wishes to our snowbird Scot friends and trust that you are dominating those northern fleets as you enjoy the cooler climates. If you are considering getting into a Scot, Ron Pletsch has a beautiful boat for sale. Fully reconditioned and in EXCELLENT condition. Tip of the week: For and aft trim is very important in the Scot. There is a fine line between dragging the stern and burying the bow. Experiment by moving for and aft for increased speed. If another boat is gaining on you check out their for and aft trim. 7 Memo To: Friday Night Series Sailors From: Bob Miller-Race Captain Subject: Race Committee Assignments Race Committee: As our fleet of participating boats continues to grow, the need to arrange for our sailing captains to serve on race committee becomes more important. I have now established a schedule of dates and have assigned each SSS captain a date to serve as the RC for that particular race. I hope to provide an accurate list of both s as well as phone numbers of all of our participating sailors. In an effort to try and make it fair for everyone, you will be given an extra throw out race for that particular series if you serve on race committee. This should move you up in the standings a bit. It will be the responsibility of the assigned RC captain to get additional personnel as needed and to get a substitute if you are not able to serve. Exchanges of dates are encouraged and I would like to be advised if you are changing with someone. This list becomes effective beginning Friday July 30th and continues until the end of the season. On dates when we have the mini SSS regattas, I will be asking for volunteers who are not planning on entering the event. 13 SARASOTA YOUTH SAILING On June 24-27, eight SYS sailors attended Laser North Americans hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club in Kemah, Texas. Congratulations go out to the following sailors: 4.7 (21 boats) 8 races: Madison Gates finished in 2nd place, Sophia Schultz in 7th, Ravi Parent in 8th, Jason D'Agostino in 9th and Wendy Reuss in 12th. Area D US Junior Championships Semi-Finals took place at Lake Pontchartrain Yacht Club in Louisiana on July Jack Famiglietti, Sami Tornese and Ben Mohney finished 1st place out of 4 Flying Scot boats in the Triple-handed Championships. They will be attending the US SAILING's Chubb U.S. Junior Triple-handed Championships on August in San Diego, CA. to compete for the Sears Cup. Profile of a Sarasota Youth Sailor Ian Nora started sailing during a summer camp at around the age of eight. He did the Learn to Race camp at around 11 years old and has been on the SYS race team ever since. While he says that there has not been any one particular experience in sailing that has stood out, all of his sailing experiences as a whole have influenced his life significantly. However, one event that had a memorable impact on his sailing was his performance at his very first national event the ACC regatta: It taught me that I need to focus when things get rough and just keep plugging away to finally get what I want. (He had a bad placing in regatta and learned to not dwell on past mistakes but to take each race as a new opportunity to win). Ian will soon be attending Rollins College where he will be on the sailing team, and his goal is to get Rollins into the top 5 in SAISA, (and if at all possible to compete in Cressys). At fifteen years old, I have had a great life at the Squadron and have been loved by many. I have been diagnosed with kidney disease, and now that I am too sick to live at the Squadron, I am living with Joanne and Cal. I m still feeling fine, and I am walking, meowing, eating, drinking, and scratching the rugs. But I need to be in air conditioning and to get subcutaneous fluids, which is why I can t live at the Squadron any more. I m adjusting to life here with their three female felines. Skye likes me, Kiki s indifferent, and Tabina likes to hiss at me for some unknown reason. I have a lot of people to thank this month: Laurel Kaiser who noticed I was sick while Joanne was on vacation and brought me to the vet (you saved my life), Krug s Corporation, who paid for 75% of my vet bills, all of you who gave to the Cat Fund, which paid the rest of the bills, Jen Tamman, who offered to take me if Joanne & Cal need a break, Brandon Lerman for his cash donation, Larry Hietbrink for donating towels, and Katie Smith and Joe Pratico for taking care of the feral cats while Joanne was away. 15 Ball Busters Submitted by Pat Murphy JULY 2010 SQUADRON DATE A lot cooler than it was Sunday when I was here as there was a great wind out of the east southeast. Ron & Don took on the job of leveling the tops of two cabinets on the Main Dock Deck that they built several years ago. They used a bottle jack and jacked up the counters until they were level and they screwed a 2 by 4 into the railing just behind to support them. Larry Mac- Millian finished the painting of the aluminum channel that retains the screen for the north porch and when he finished told me that he would see me in a couple of months. He was en route to the Boston area to help his kids renovate a house and do some sailing with friends. I put DeRusto paint on the galvanized flashing just above the chair rail at the base of the office. The galvanized flashing was badly rusted, especially on the north side of the office where it faces New Pass as it is exposed to the salt water spray coming over the sea wall and will have to be replaced sometime in the future. Ron Burnette gassed and oiled the boats and then folded up several plastic tarps that were laying on the ground as well as screwing in a black cover on the Boat Work collection basin as well as riding around on the Golf Cart and picking up trash. Wanda and Alan Titcombe stocked the bar while Eddie recuperates at home. SQUADRON DATE Hot & humid without Eddie, but Ron showed and helped Wanda and Alan Titcombe stock the bar. Later Alan swept off the Pavilion floor as the blower motor was nowhere to be found and rearranged the furniture. Ruth Nordman continued her superb painting this time painting the chair rail on the inside of the porch gray and painting the 2 by 4 trim around the office the same color while her husband Chuck raked up seaweed and disposed of it on the berm outside the fence where it will make the growth taller and more luxuriant than before. I scraped down the aluminum frame of the bar windows and dug 30 years of dirt out of the grooves and track that hold the windows in place so Ruth can paint it bronze next week. SQUADRON DATE Hot but not as hot as usual due to the rains that we have had recently and especially last night. Wanda and Alan Titcombe stocked the bar while Ruth & Chuck Nordman finished painting the window frames for the bar windows bronze with Chuck scraping out as much crap as he could out of the tracks that form the bottom. Ron and Don sorted and saved a pile of electrical and other stuff that was donated a couple weeks ago and did some wood work under the shade of the Pavilion that I don t know about. I made up as usual a list of Ballbuster jobs but put a second coat of bottom paint on my catboat, Sweet Pepper, while Alan Titcombe cut off two extraneous projections on my trailer and installed a 12 roller for me (this is more interesting for a true Ballbuster) and then straightened up all table and chairs on the porch and then did the same for the Pavilion. SQUADRON DATE I was not here today as I had to take Dona to see her knee doctor and then to Sarasota Memorial s pretesting unit to get her ready for a knee job on Monday. A new member, Phil Peters, a handy man, did a professional repair job on the northwestern roof of the BBQ pit declining help from Alan Titcombe other than the carrying of shingles and tar paper to the area. It looks fantastic. Alan, dejected, cleaned up the work benches at the Work Area instead and helped Wanda with the heavy stuff at the Bar as did Ruth & Chuck Nordman. Ron & Don continued building more garbage can covers. SQUADRON DATE Big Danny died this morning a bit after 2 a.m. of Pancreatic Cancer. Although he was not a Wednesday or Saturday Ballbuster he did an unending number of jobs for the Squadron just about every day of the year that definitely qualify him as a Ballbuster. He worked for the notorious Bob Winter s in the 80 s and under Bob s direction fixed for ever the many gelcoat problems on the bottom of my catboat, Sweet Pepper. After the Havana trip in 1994 with Bob s business belly up, he and his wife, Ruthie came to me and said they would like to continue the repair part of the business at the Squadron, I said yes and he began to work here. Whenever we had a hurricane Page 15

16 Ballbusters (Continued) or tropical storm affect the Squadron he was one of the first to help clean up or better yet be on duty at the Squadron rescuing boats (if possible) when they break loose from their moorings or securing the Squadron s powerboat fleet before or during the storm if necessary. For many years he cooked BBQ pork for the Pig Roast or Labor Day Regattas, Hangover Race and/or hamburgers and hotdogs on Saturday and Sunday and whenever we needed someone to organize a cooking crew he was there to do it. He also made sure we had tender turkey s on Thanksgiving day. Besides this, he used his boat repair skills revamping both the Mako, Big Ben and Pontoon Boat when they last needed repair. The list of things he provided for the Squadron and for members is probably unending and many unknown. Along with other departed sailors, Bottom Job will be sailing on the bay forever. SQUADRON DATE Believe it or not, Dona had her left knee successfully replaced this morning at Sarasota Memorial. 3 back jobs, 2 knee jobs and one more back job to go as she has two more rods in her back broken since the last back job in February. SQUADRON DATE Wanda with the aid and abetment of Walter stocked the bar and packed away the SYSCO delivery. Bob Marsh, a new member from Texas, came early and cut the clubhouse yard grass and then with the aid of a unknown Luffing Lassie, with a son taking the YSP sailing class, moved most of the boats on dollies so he could cut in that area also. He brought his own mower and weed eater also. Ron & Don continued building garbage can covers and also leveled the two tables at the Main Dock Deck permanently, we hope. Bob Haynes, a new member, swept the Pavilion floor of pine needles and whatever trash it had collected. Ruth & Chuck Nordman painted the chair rail that goes around the outside of the Clubhouse after sanding it first. Alan Titcombe helped me move a bicycle rack from the back forty to the front, picked up junk, moved the tar paper and left over shingles to the double door area of the Work Area and then buried a tube containing our telephone cable that ran along the inside of the sidewalk. Ron Burnette, replaced a drive cable that someone had broken on a wheeled weed eater so someone? Could use it in the yard. From the Commodore, Sarasota Sailing Squadron In Memoriam: It is with great sadness I must report to you of the passing of long time member and friend, Daniel Wiedenhoft. Danny passed away early the morning, of July 15, He had been suffering from cancer and his loss will be greatly felt by his family and all his many friends. Danny was 46 years old. Many of you know Big Danny, who over the years had become a fixture at the Squadron. Danny never missed a beat on all things Squadron and his sharp, insightful and incisive wit will be sorely missed by all who came to know and love him. Danny endured his illness with quiet grace and determination. And he endured it without the benefit of medical insurance. Many of us knew him as the tough guy but we also knew him as the man with the big heart who would do anything for the Squadron and for its members. On Saturday, July 24, 2010, the Squadron hosted a silent auction to raise funds to cover Danny s expenses. If you would like to make a donation at anytime, please contact the Squadron office to make the arrangements. All proceeds will benefit his family. If you absolutely must park in front of someone s boat, please leave your keys in the car, so it can be moved if needed. Blocking someone's boat may lead to your car being towed at your own expense. Examples of this are: working for others on Squadron property or the mooring field, charging people to sail, etc. ATTENTION ALL BOAT OWNERS In order to keep your boat at The Squadron, you must have VALID INSURANCE COVER- AGE. (Standing Rules - Section II. General; Item L) Please make sure the office always has a copy of your current boat insurance coverage. You can: bring in a copy, fax it in to or scan and joanne@sarasotasailing squadron.org. Each time you renew your insurance, usually on an annual basis, you MUST resubmit it to the office. Please make sure the expiration date is clearly legible.
