Emergencies at Sea with John Connolly Golden Gate Yacht Club, 19 August 2010 J ohn has been instructing in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 20 years and also leads Modern Sailing's foreign cruises. Responding to a Man Over Board Prevention! Don't let it happen -- use jacklines. Make sure everyone is wearing a PFD appropriate for the conditions and well adjusted for their size. Throw the life sling, but if you've already travelled too far from the person wait until you maneuver closer to them. Make sure you don't run over the lifesling's line. Local sailors have completed 3 events in the bay where wetsuited swimmers volunteer as MOBs in order to evaluate the latest in recovery gear. Many lessons were learned: ο Use the engine. ο Get person on leeward side of boat. There used to be argument about leeward versus windward until the first test day after which there was no argument. If conditions are rough it is actually hard to position the boat close enough to the person if they are on the windward side as you don't make that much headway. ο Getting person on board is difficult. For boats with scooped transom, swim platform etc that is great until you get about 7-8 ft waves. Then because the boat is pitching around its center it is difficult. ο Elevator method: run a line from stern to a winch, have person stand on the line and then winch it to lift them up. TIYC Newsletter JIBE December 2010 Page 5 ο Make a rope ladder by running sever loops of different length from stern to winch or use a doubled up bowline from a halyard. ο Using the boom, like they say in the books, didn't really work. If someone is injured then using a dingy to retrieve them can be a good plan. Water Leaks Did you hit something? Be prepared - have sufficient bilge pump capacity. John has six, three electric and three manual. Also have wide enough hoses as well as pump capacity. You should be able to activate or use a pump from the cockpit. Have a bilge warning alarm (or two) so you know when water is coming in. Continued page 7

7 You need a way to plug a hole from the outside. Use a spare sail with line on each corner or drop the jib and use that. Has the rudder broken off? You can roll a sail and try to get it under the boat and twist it around rudder post. Don't hit whales. See them off the beam that's ok, in front of you though heave to and turn on engine to make sound so they know you are there. Rigging Check once a year When underway do a walk around to inspect every hours New lines are strong enough these days to be used as substitute rigging if needed. Towing Be aware of legal issues, especially outside of US Use cleats and winches, strongest pieces of deck hardware Use nylon line Set up a bridle and attach towline to that Be aware of the shock load on the line...old fire hoses (canvas covered rubber) make great chaffing protection Going aground Tack immediately! While you still have momentum. Don't go aground - navigation is important! Depth alarms tend to cause too many false alarms and get turned off. Go around the outside of obstacles near a lee shore Steering Inspect regularly Emergency tiller; don't just know where it is, actually try it sometime! If emergency tiller is steel but rudder post a softer material it can break or wear out the connection Add a reinforced hole to the rudder with some line running up from it, then can run two lines and steer with winches. Wind vane doesn't really help; it tends to not be deep enough. Engine Failure By far, this is the most likely emergency you're going to encounter Get sails up, get away from shore Raise jib first. Boat will tend to orient itself beam on to the wind which is going to make raising the main impossible Check fuel before you leave, most common engine problem is running out of fuel. Get a vacuum gauge for your fuel filter, can see suction pressure and tell if there is a blockage Having more than one filter in parallel that you can switch between is great Other common problems are algae, rust, or water in the fuel (check the filter), impeller, or ruptured hose. Airlift Do whatever the aircrew tells you to. They may want you to put the person being lifted in the dingy and tow them behind so they can be clear of rigging. Abandoning Ship Have a strategy for letting someone know - EPIRB, radio Don't abandon ship unless you really have to - be stepping up to the raft. Recertified rafts are ok Going up the mast Wind 20 degrees off the beam to aft gives less rolling motion Loosen the main so you can get some purchase on the mast Use lessons learned from mountain climbing. MEXICO SAILI G ADVE TURE Fred W. Gibson (Crest View) I spent 2 weeks in Mexico recently visiting my sister and brother-inlaw (from Breckenridge, CO) at their casita above Cabo San Lucas on the Gulf of California. Their patio is about 80 feet from the water with a seawall in between. Weather was great and the ocean was about 80 degrees. They have kayaks and a small sailboat and a nearby reef for snorkeling. All in all, a beautiful getaway and the town they are in, El Cardonal, has only 250 residents. Nightlife is nil but outside activities abound. Actually, there is nightlife twice a week and it consists of a taco stand in the middle of town which we walk to with our libations and sit under the stars with neighbors and residents. The price is right like 12 pesos a taco! Just don t add the Habanero sauce as that is really, really hot but does justify having more cerveza. The highlight of the South of the Border trip was meeting up with John Aldous (another TIYC member) in La Paz (about 1 hour from the casita). John had let me know that he would be arriving while I was there so we planned on getting together. He had gone on the Baja Ha Ha race last year from San Diego and liked it so much in the La Paz area that he decided to use that as his base. When home in England, he puts Coral Rose (a 34 foot Aloha in beautiful condition) on the hard near the marina and he had just launched it a few days before we TIYC Newsletter JIBE December 2010 Page 7 Continued next page

8 got there. Great timing. John s Coral Rose John invited us to help in a race ( a number of the boats had just finished the Baja Ha Ha ) on a Cal 39, Gitana, owned by Pat Mitchell of South Shore Tahoe the next day in the bay there. Gitana Racing Crew It s been a number of years since I have raced so I couldn t pass it up. There were five crew and the skipper. One of the crew, my sister Anne Marie, was the Rah Rah girl! Not much of a sailor but she sure can yell loudly to cheer us on! It must have worked because we came in 2 nd physically but not sure of the overall placing as it is based on PHRF ratings. Race Start Marina De La Paz Sunset The Gitana is a fast boat for its size and very responsive. We flew the A-sail and did many jibes on the downwind course. John was handling the preventer on the boom and helping David (another South Shore Tahoe guest) get the spinnaker to the correct side during the jibe maneuver and it sure kept them busy. My brother-in-law, Dayton, handled the main sheet trimming and I managed the spinnaker sheets and kept the big sail full most of the time. Pat is quite a competitive skipper and really never lets up the pressure on the other boats and, because of that, we did well. It was a great day with a fun loving group and will be remembered for a long time! The Pacifica Cerveza at the end was a good way to celebrate. Thanks to John and Pat for making that happen!!! I look forward to maybe heading down there again for fun in the sun. Hasta la vista! Continued from page 2 have a layover here before going back to Austin together. I m thankful she got through all the red tape! Jerry and Daniel & I walked across the bridge to join friends at Peninsula Yacht Club for a great potluck. Karen & Jerry Huff Hi All, Heres hoping everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving, we certainly did down here in La Paz,MX, it s not a spanish tradition but there are enough expats down here to get together and have a thanksgiving buffet style dinner for 200 Marina Palmira. It was great to connect with Fred Gibson and his sister Annmarie and her husband Dayton here in La Paz in November for a couple of days. John Aldous We are thankful for our TIYC friends and family. My sister and her family flew out from Georgia to be with the rest of the family this year. Looking forward to may cruises, on the water activities and events at the club this year. It is especially good to look back at the rescue of the skipper and crew of the Catalyst and we are looking forward to seeing Kristy around the club. Lynette & Russ Breed We are thankful for everyone at TIYC and their enthusiasm for life and good food. We were invited to our son s house and dined with 3 of our grandkids (4 years, 3 years and 1.5 years old). Needless to say it was lively! Hope all of yours was just as fun!! Mary & Rich Atta and I are truly thankful for all our TIYC friends! We spent our 8th Thanksgiving on Yerba Buena Island surrounded by family and friends and ate dinner with the beautiful bay as our backdrop! My mom and Arianna were with us, but Darya stayed on the East Coast with an old high school friend in South Carolina! Happy Holidays to one and all! Looking forward to our great December events! 9 Thoughts on Yacht Provisioning By Cior Wills W hen I set out to plan our sailing trip to the Grenadines last year I knew provisioning would be a huge time suck. With little time on the ground in St. Vincent to shop for ourselves, Excel spreadsheets became my weapon of choice. Thankfully, our charter operator was willing to pitch in and do our grocery shopping for us. Internet research suggested that there were a million ways to skin this cat, but no quick and easy methods for planning meals for 5 people 10 days. I found several helpful recipes friendly to the cramped and jostling quarters of a ship s galley, exhaustive lists of suggested foods for life at sea, but nothing in the way of a solid planning tool. To ensure that we weren t left with bread but not butter or cooking oil like last year (hint: mayonnaise can work in a pinch), I came up with the following spreadsheet. Tip o. 1: Create a sample itinerary. Some islands offer great restaurants, and others are entirely uninhabited. This was key in planning meals for days of plenty and want. Knowing which passages can be rough also prompted me to plan foods that were easy to prepare and eat when life aboard is less than simple. As we all know, boiling water on land is a task most can master but avoiding horrific burns as you cook spaghetti for your crew on a close haul in heavy conditions is quite another matter. Tip o. 2: Make a note of which dates and times offer options for re-provisioning. A loaf of American bread can last a week or more. A loaf procured in St. Vincent will contain far less preservative and will spoil quickly. Many onboard refrigerators are nothing more than an icebox topped up and kept cool when the ship s engine is running. The quality of your food depends largely on how regularly you can purchase ice. It s a fine art to juggle your raw ingredients throughout a trip to minimize spoilage and waste. Tip o. 3: Encourage each crew member to take responsibility for a meal. By designating an owner, you ll ensure that everyone does their part to keep the crew fed. A bonus is that your crew members might have great meal ideas, thereby improving variety and possibly the quality of your dinner. Tip o. 4: Everybody needs a good breakfast. Most all breakfasts are spent at anchor before departing for the day s sail. Make breakfast count. Go big. A well-fed crew is a joy to work with. For our trip, we re planning generous spreads of pancakes, cheese, burritos, egg casseroles, fruit, bacon, sausage, coffee, juice and more. Tip o. 5: Anything can be a meal. One of my favorite experiences was eating chocolate cake, bacon and champagne for breakfast in a deserted bay at San Simeon on Matt Farnsworth's boat. Don t leave joy and spontaneity on shore. Tip o. 6: othing beats a cheese sandwich or beer in the morning. Tip o. 7: Don t forget the charcoal, lighter fluid, dish soap and necessities. Tip o. 8: Write out each ingredient by meal. You ll be able to notice efficiencies and avoid repeat buys. Also, there s no reason why noodle salad can t become noodle dinner. We re having a fajita spread one night, and breakfast burritos the next morning. Tip o. 9: Use generic terms and offer up substitutions with your final order. I was surprised to find that our charter agent in St. Vincent was completely unaware of what English Breakfast tea was. Black tea, no problem!
