September, 2013 Port Ludlow Yacht Club JIB SHEET You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. Commodore s Column by Brett Oemichen C.S. Lewis a yacht club. Following the customary August break, both your board and the Jib Sheet are back in stride for the busy sprint through the last four months of the year. We ll have much to tell you about including the Commodore s Celebration Cruise and the Nomination of Officers Convention in September, the October cruise, Cruisers Wrap party and Open House in October and Election of Officers and Women s Group Holiday Luncheon in November. Of course, the year ends with the December Holiday cruise and our club s capstone event, the Change of Watch, on December 14. Please check the web site and read the updates in the Jib Sheet to make sure you have these activities posted on your calendar. All of these events will have a common theme: continued celebration of our 40 years together as SUMMER CRUISING Many have remarked that this summer has produced some of the best weather we have seen in many years. PLYC cruisers are using this weather window to take some extended journeys on the water and we look forward to hearing about their adventures. Sue and I took a trip (unfortunately not by boat, but the service on Korean Air was top-notch) to South Korea to visit our youngest daughter who, along with her boyfriend, have been teaching at an international school for the past year. Sara and Nick--a nice young man from Minnesota--were married while we were there. We had a wonderful time visiting but were ready to return to the northwest after two weeks of hot humid weather and big crowds of people everywhere. Speaking of cruising, 19 boats will be joining the Commodores Celebration Cruise which will be underway from September This cruise will take us through the San Juans and up into the Canadian Gulf Islands. We have many celebrations planned along with activities at Butchart Gardens, Chemainus Dinner Theatre, Coming Events The Wreck Room -open Friday and Saturday, See the WR page on the web site. Board Meeting WR September 3 Nomination of Officers, Bay Club, September 20 17:30 Marine Exchange, WR, September 27, 16:15 Women s Group Fundraisier, WR, September 25

the Ganges Market and Moran Mansion at Rosario. Look for a full report in the October Jib Sheet. OPEN HOUSE PLYC will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday October 23 to provide us with an opportunity to invite and meet prospective new members to our club. Do you know someone who you think would be interested in joining PLYC? Please invite them to the Open House. FOND FAREWELLS This month we will be saying our farewells to two long-time member couples. Kevin and Sue Ryan will be heading to their new home in Santa Barbara, California, near one of their sons. Terry & Janet Barnes will be moving closer to their family who live near Charlotte, South Carolina. We will miss the Ryan s and Barnes presence in our community and thank them for their contributions to our club over the years. Like Arne and Jan Ditmar, who were back for a visit at the end of August, we hope Kevin, Sue, Janet and Terry will come back to see us. MARINE EXCHANGE NEEDS YOU! As you know, Kevin Ryan and Peter Joseph founded the Marine Exchange program held the last Friday of the month, September through April, at the Wreck Room for the past couple of years. Peter has decided to retire from Marine Exchange and so we are in need of a new mentor to continue this valuable educational program for our members. There is an almost unlimited variety of interesting topics and potential speakers to tap into which make this a fun and rewarding activity in our club. Please let me know if you can help us continue Marine Exchange. KLAS ROCKS ATON The US Coast Guard 13 th District has notified us that the new light on Klas Rocks became operational on August 5 and the old isolated danger lighted whistle buoy was removed in mid-august. Look for a separate article on the new Klas Rocks ATON elsewhere in this Jib Sheet. WELL DONE! I d like to wrap-up this month s column with congratulations to Harold Brunstad. Harold and his teammates from the 1965 WSU baseball team will be inducted into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame in early September. Harold s team finished second in the College World Series that year and he also led the NCAA in batting average for part of that year. Congratulations Harold--we hope Sheila takes you to Ferdinand s for ice cream to celebrate! Rear Commodore s Column by Steve Hall The Commodores Cruise is in September. There are 20-plus boats, skippers, and crew set to continue the celebration of our 40 th anniversary as a yacht club. Kathy and I have experienced several fun-filled cruises this season and the upcoming Commodores Cruise should be no exception as we travel north to the San Juan Islands and Canada. The cruise will visit many of our favorite destinations such as Roche Harbor, Rosario, Ganges and Chemainus where we will again enjoy the popular dinner and theater. New stops for us include Brentwood, Genoa, and Ladysmith. We really enjoyed all the new places we have seen this year with the club and there have been several. The PLYC 40 th anniversary celebration will culminate with the 2013 Change of Watch. Planning is well underway for this event appropriately titled Ruby Red Rendezvous Celebrating 40 Years to be held on December 14 at the Bay Club. Michael and Leslie will provide the evening s entertainment. The proposed menu is being discussed with the caterer and more details will be presented in next month s Jib Sheet. Volunteers are working on decorations, flowers, facility and bar/wine set-up. Many thanks to all those who have volunteered to help with the Change of Watch. Make sure you save the date, Saturday, December 14, for the major social event for the club. Change of Watch is the event you don t want to miss! Please remember that the PLYC is an organization of volunteers with a 40 year-long history of volunteerism. Because of the volunteer work of our membership, everything from the Jib Sheet you are reading to the social events at the Wreck Room and other venues are available for all of us to enjoy. Thanks to everyone who pitches in to make PLYC the stellar club it is! 2

The Fleet Captain s Report By Olav Pederson What a great July cruise!! Kay and Wally Kathcart did a wonderful job and we appreciate everything they contributed to its success. This is the first time Deanne and I have been cruise directors. Kay & Wally s experience and help allowed us to put everything into perspective. So, for those members who have considered volunteering, but have put it off for fear of the unknown, put your fears aside and jump in. With all the experience our fellow members have, it s hard to go wrong. This was an interesting cruise because it promoted flexibility, which we felt was needed at this time of the year. We designed it in order for our members to join us for the entire cruise or for only portions of it. Everything worked out well. A pleasant surprise for all those attending La Conner was to only have to pay for one of the two nights there thanks to Kathy Kubesh. Don t worry, although the marina lost a day s moorage, the local La Conner businesses benefited. With this being my first visit to La Conner, I found the currents to be more intense than first thought. I m glad we arrived when it was moving slowly. It was free entertainment later watching boats attempt to navigate turns when the current was at its max. We offered a destination option. Four boats went to Echo Bay at Sucia Island while the rest went to Roche Harbor or their separate ways. There was some fog on the way, but the ceiling was high and it wasn t too thick. The visit to Echo Bay (one of my favorite anchorages) did not disappoint. Upon arrival we set our crab pots with hopes of dining on crabs that evening (we also had hot dogs on standby just in case). That evening we boiled crabs on the beach and had stuffed peppers, chips & dip and a lot of other great food. We even had enough crab left over to share with others at Roche the next day. Let s move on to the feast we had a Roche Harbor. First of all, Wally and Kay treated us all to specialty drinks, which quickly set the mood for the great food to come. Can my wife cook or what? Well done, Deanne! Deanne and I decided to leave the next morning at 5:30 to make sure we arrived at Deception Pass at the optimum time. We only encountered fog after Thatcher Pass and it remained foggy, but fairly calm on our route. Those who joined us via Cattle Pass experienced rough weather and fog from there to Deception Pass. Blue Loon, Lucky Two, Xtsea and Midnight Sun had a restful evening and did our best to finish off the leftovers from the previous evening. The next morning we departed after the fog began to lift and arrived back at our slip by 5:00. For those who braved the trip back home on that foggy and windy Thursday via the Admiralty Inlet, let s just say it made for a very long and stressful day with winds out of the south, 3 to 4 foot seas and fog. The Commodore s Cruise I m very pleased to report that the Commodore s Cruise is fully booked and we look forward to an exciting trip. Don t forget to visit the Cruise Schedule section of our website at on a regular basis and check for updates. 3

Wreck Room Highlights by Peggy Kulm, WR Scheduling & Events Coordinator July and August seem to have flown by. Your Wreck Room hosted appetizers every Friday, Grilling with the Commodore, Taco Night, Pot Luck, Birthday Celebrations, precruise briefings, late night viewing of the fireworks during the Festival by the Bay, a Celebration of Life for Lu Whitney, a festive sharing of appetizers to enjoy a visit from Past Commodore Ditmar and his wife, Jan, and several member sponsored events. Our largest event so far was sponsored by Kori Ward, our marina manager. Over 120 members of the Kingston and Jefferson Chambers of Commerce visited the Wreck Room. It gave us great exposure in the community and offered an opportunity to show off our great Club and volunteer staff. September seems to be a quiet month at the WR. The only Saturday event is our regular birthday celebration on September 28th. However, Fridays are filled with promises of some great appetizers. September 6th and 13th will see Judy Newell as the appetizer queen as she deliberates on what appetizer you might enjoy. Wednesday, September 25th, the WR will host the annual PLYC Women's fund raiser event. On September 27th we say good bye to long time members Kevin and Sue Ryan. No reservations are necessary; just "bring an appetizer to share" as we wish them well on their move to California. Friday, September 20th, is the nomination of officers event at the Bay Club. Look for more information about it in this Jib Sheet. The WR will be closed that night. In mid October, we will move to the fall schedule. The WR will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5-8 PM. Look for s about the start date. It is already shaping up to be an interesting month with an open house/new member event and a scotch taste. As we move into the fall, I could use a few volunteers to plan some Wednesday night events. No new items were added to our Lost and Found. We did add 1 new burgee in August from the Tacoma YC with a promise of a few more from other YC members who used our reciprocal dock. As always, I end with a thanks to our volunteers and a request to continue your support of the club by helping to fill the staffing needs. The July Birthday celebrants - Sail Captain s Column by John Neesz On Saturday June 30 this year s Jack and Jill Race/Cruise went to Kingston. Three sailboats raced and others cruised. The race started in 12 knots of breeze and ended in none. Reality (John and Dee Little), Shadowdance (Grant and Lori Colby) and Nor wester (John Neesz and Shawn Lowney) were in a virtual tie a mile from the finish line when the race s time limit ran out. Following the abandoned race a potluck dinner was enjoyed by the racers and cruisers: 4 C s (Wade Crouch), Harbor Inn (Brett and Sue Oemichen, Temblor (Tom and Betty Kingston and Olenka 3 (Piotr Okonski and Aleksandra Wareham). Sunday morning a large breakfast was enjoyed at the Oak Table. Clear skies and delightful temperatures were 4 (Continued on page 5)

enjoyed both days. My thanks go out to Port Captain Wade Crouch for officiating the race. Our Etchells fleet completed its nine race Summer Series on July 25 with keta well in the lead with 7.5 points vs. Gringo with 14 and Bananas with keta is ably and consistently sailed by Dan Darrow, Dick Schneider and Hank West. The six race Etchells 2013 Regatta was sailed on August 3 and 4. Again keta led with 8 points vs. Gringo with 12, Bananas 19 and Lightning 21. The first race day of the Etchells Fall Series was held on August 21 with keta taking a first and a second and Bananas a first and a third. Until Thursday this year s Etchells racing has been blessed with the most enjoyable sailing conditions in memory. keta would have swept another day s racing were it not for a mysterious hole in the wind that converged with its course late in the second race. On August 28 I announced that due to very low planned participation in the season s two remaining fully crewed handicap races that the Commodore s Cup and Bitter End races have been cancelled. We look forward to the annual Single Handed race on August 31. The Single Handed Race Participants Relaxing After the Race The July Cruise Report By Olav Pederson The July Cruise Singing in the San Juan s was a Sunny success. Thanks to cruise directors Olav and Deanne Pedersen and Wally and Kay Cathcart. We were a happy collection of 12 boats. Wally and Kay welcomed our boaters in La Conner with a wonderful selection of summer cocktails at the Cathcart Tiki Bar accompanied with summer salads provided by the Weavers, Kubesh/Hall s and the Quick s and a great dessert by the Oemichen s. We had a fun time visiting with Kathy Muir and Jack Manning who were traveling with Bob and Jan Quick. They fit right in with our crowd. La Conner and our next stop, Bellingham, were fun towns with good restaurants, happy hours and of course, great shopping! From there we split between Roche Harbor and Echo bay. The Echo Bay group was successful with a pot full of crabs for our beach excursion. Thanks to the Kubech/hall, Hills, Whipple, Pedersen s for toting all the equipment, drinks, appetizers and sides to our beachside campsite. The next evening at Roche harbor we enjoyed good drinks from the Cathcart bar and a Cajun dinner of boudin sausage, ribs, crawfish etouffee and finished up with warm bread pudding with whiskey sauce. We were so happy to have Margaret and Henry Nelson and Jerri and David Reid join us for our Roche Harbor 5 (Continued on page 7)

stop. The last leg of our cruise split us between Deer Harbor and Oak Harbor for a restful day in the sun. Our surprise guest, of course, was the fog who like a stinky fish refused to leave and followed some of us home! We are grateful to all our PLYC boaters who participate in our cruises. Without the sharing of kitchen items, help setting up and everyone s knowledge of the area and past trips, we would not have been as successful as we were, even when we have a few hick-ups along the way. September Immediate Past Commodore Report The upcoming exciting Commodore s Cruise signals the end of the summer cruising season. The next major social function is the Nomination of Officers. As the chair of the Nominating Committee I am in charge of bringing to you, the members, our recommendation for our 2014 slate of officers. We are a club of volunteers and the opportunity to serve on the PLYC Board is an important and rewarding service. We still have several board positions to fill and I welcome any recommendations from our membership. Thanks again to all of you for the support you have given the club this year and we can all look forward to a successful New Klas Rock Light Operational The U.S. Coast Guard has completed the construction of Klas Rock Light, an aid to navigation structure (ATON) that replaces the old floating buoy which marked the southern edge of the shoal. The Coast Guard began building the structure on Klas Rock, offshore of Mats Mats Bay, in early July utilizing a helicopter to pour the foundation. The structure replaces the floating ATON Klas Rocks Isolated Danger Lighted Buoy DK. The new structure, featuring a Sealite self-contained LED lantern, displays the same lighting characteristic that was shown by the buoy, two white flashes every five seconds (Fl (2) 5s). The old Klas Rock Isolated Danger Lighted Whistle Buoy was removed in mid- August, after the lantern was installed on the light. Klas Rock is a unique hazard to navigation as maritime traffic flows in many directions about the rocks and shoals. The aid s position on top of the rock will provide increased visibility to mariners and more precisely mark the hazard. Several PLYC members have played a role in interacting with the Coast Guard to reinforce the need for this ATON improvement, including Past Commodores David Aho, Kevin Ryan, Peter Joseph and Roy Kraft. October Cruise The Surf or Turf Cruise to Point Hudson Marina & RV Park is coming in October. All PLYC members are invited to attend. Join the cruise on your boat or in your RV. Among the planned activities will be a special "just for us" tour of the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, complete with lunch at the beach. More information is available on the PLYC website under October Cruise. Registration deadline is September 16th. Cruise directors are Anne & Don Whipple and Kathleen & Milt Taylor. 7

Port Ludlow Yacht Club Ladies News The women in our club are known to be intrepid and twenty-nine of them recently proved it again by attending lunch in the rain at the newly reopened Timberhouse Restaurant in Quilcene. After a lovely lunch, the ladies heard details about the impact of the e-books purchased for the Quilcene School District with contributions from the fundraiser last year. An article about the project recently appeared in the Port Townsend Leader complete with a photo of Sherry Robinson and Susan Erickson presenting our gift to the school librarian. Jamie Bima updated the group on the ongoing work she a several other dedicated volunteers continue to do at the transitional housing facilities in Port Townsend. Several volunteers recently helped organize and deliver furniture, bedding, and kitchen items to a newly opened apartment building. After lunch, most of the group traveled on to Brinnon for a pleasant, if a bit soggy, tour of the Whitney Gardens. Planners for the luncheon were: Kathleen Taylor, event chair; and her committee; Billie Land, Karen Hashagen, Kay Cathcart, Lee Brush, Peggy Kulm, and Sheila Brunstad. Attention Ladies of the PLYC Women s Group Save Wednesday, September 28 That s the date for our annual fundraising event and fun evening. There will be lots of raffle prizes and opportunities to bid on some great items. Plan to bring a friend. Watch your for more details. 8
