Port Ludlow Yacht Club March, 2013 JIB SHEET You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. Commodore s Column by Brett Oemichen I ve just been reading an essay entitled Port Ludlow Yacht Club; First Five-Year History: It s fascinating to walk back in time four decades to see what our club was like in our formative years. I d like to share a few tidbits of our early history with you. Our club was incorporated on May 9, 1973 and began with 21 charter members. Many of the offices in the new club were ones we recognize today: Commodore, Vice Commodore, Secretary-Treasurer, Fleet Captain, Sailing Captain, and one we don t have today, a Measurer. I had to do some research to learn the responsibilities of a Measurer in a yacht club. I ll share more about our early history in upcoming columns. Some big news for local mariners: In January, the U.S. Coast Guard announced a proposal to replace the Isolated Danger Lighted Bell Buoy near Klas Rocks with a lighted structure and dayboard built on top of Klas Rocks. The construction is expected to occur between the summer of 2013 and This proposed ATON improvement will better mark the Klas Rocks hazard which can be approached from multiple directions. PLYC sent an enthusiastic letter of support for the project to the 13 th Coast Guard District. Please take a moment to introduce yourselves to our new members Daniel and Billie Land, who we welcome this month. Look for pictures of our new members elsewhere in this edition. We also extend a warm Welcome Back to Gail Koester. Gail and her husband Howard joined PLYC in May 2000 and had requested an LOA for 2012 prior to Howard s death last year. As many of you know, members Harvey and Jen Portz recently began their Caribbean sailing adventure. You can follow their journey on their blog at Last month s column brought you up to date on the activities of our hard-working board members. On March 9, at the Officers Open House, you ll hear their reports during our first business meeting of the year. It all begins at the Beach Club at 1530 and wraps up at the Wreck Room with good food and beverages arranged by Deanne Pedersen and Teresa Forrest. 2 The themed Wednesday pot-luck events have been a great success and a lot of fun. Our thanks to Kathy Kubesh and Peggy Kulm who have worked together to create a very pleasant atmosphere that everyone has enjoyed. The decorations, drink specials and music have received many compliments and I ve noticed that many are staying until the last-call bell has rung. Please make sure to join in the fun for the next one! The end-of the-month birthday celebrations have been a big hit. Twelve members received a free drink in January and the rest of the crowd joined in with cake and singing. Our thanks to all who contributed to planning and serving the events in February. Please mark your calendar with these important upcoming events: March 9 at 1530: Officers Open House all-members meeting at the Beach Club and Wreck Room March 18 at 1700: Cruise Directors meeting, Wreck Room March 17 at 1700: St. Patrick s Day coordinated by Sharon Lynch March 29 at 1615: Marine Exchange, Wreck Room April 10 at 1000: Wreck Room Spring Clean Up followed by a cookout on the deck April 13 at 1500: Sailors Preview Meeting in the Wreck Room April 14-18: Wake-Up Cruise April 20 at 1030: Ice Breaker Race April 26 at 1615: Marine Exchange (ME will reconvene in September) April 27 at 0900: Training Day (learn more in Rear Commodore Steve Hall s column in this issue) April 29 at 1200: Women s Luncheon Dancing Brush, Poulsbo Rear Commodore s Column by Steve Hall Plans for Training Day 2013 are well under way. The course has been set to offer some exciting and informative presentations sure to provide an educational and fun filled day. Our presenters are experienced professionals who have agreed to share their knowledge with us. The day begins with Peter Joseph taking us on a cruise one only wants to take while in a classroom. Perils range from mechanical breakdowns to the close proximity of other boats as you leave the dock for a cruise to the straits. This interactive, tabletop exercise will surely engage all attendees. Our next presentation will be at the Beach Club s indoor pool where an interesting discussion and demonstration will be presented by David Aho and Kevin Ryan. Surviving an unexpected fall off the dock or overboard while at the dock or underway requires preparedness that begins with wearing a PFD that will properly inflate when needed. Additionally, some thought should be given to the type of clothing you wear. Did you know some clothing, when wet, adds a significant amount of weight making it even more difficult to get out of the water? Learn what to wear and how to properly use safety gear because in our frigid waters what you know could save your life. Next, we return to the Beach Club for lunch, which will be provided. Afterwards, attendees may choose from a number of breakout sessions that will take place at various locations including the dock. One classroom session with Peter Okonski will show how to use DSC (digital selective calling) to make a direct connection with a fellow cruiser or group of cruisers without using busy channel 16. Peter will also demonstrate how to effectively use AIS (Automatic Identification System). There will be additional presentations covering such topics as anchoring; tides and currents; diesel engine; and other areas of interest. After our breakout sessions, attendees will regroup at the Beach Club to hear our keynote speaker, Jay Albrecht, who is the Lead Forecaster and Marine Program Manager for the National Weather Service located in Seattle. Jay will present an informative discussion that concentrates on storms in the PNW, how storm systems evolve as well as heavy weather avoidance in the PNW. Jay s discussion will also include where to 2 (Continued on page 3)

get free weather training. While the formal Training Day program wraps up at the Beach Club, attendees may continue their education upstairs in the Wreck Room where there will be a charting exercise and wine tasting followed by the usual Saturday Wreck Room festivities. Remember to reserve Saturday, April 27 for PLYC Training Day and keep a watch out for the April Jib Sheet that will include more details about this year s event. Registration opens in early March and notification will be made via . Thanks also go to Peggy Kulm for coordinating the registration efforts. Fleet Captain s Column by Olav Pedersen What a difference a year makes! Last year was our first one cruising up here. It s all a learning experience and the nice thing about time is that, as it goes along, we learn. We learn from doing, studying, listening, fixing things, breaking things and hopefully keeping our setbacks to a minimum. Learning about this area has been a wonderful experience. Doing research, studying charts and areas, listening to the experiences of other members and boaters we have had the pleasure to meet has been a great help shortening our learning curve. Still considering myself to be rather fresh out of the box, I like to refer to maps as often as possible to get better acquainted with these surroundings. In the end, this resulted in a large map of the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands that shows all the destinations PLYC has visited over the years as well as what our current plans are for cruising in I will bring it to the Wreck Room on a regular basis and hope our members and guests will find it interesting as well as an enticement to join us on our travels. This cruising season is really shaping up. So far, the furthest destination to the north will be Ladysmith, British Columbia and the furthest to the south will be Olympia. Canada is always a beautiful area for new Northwest arrivals to explore. I don t know how long Deanne and I will consider ourselves to fall into that category, but every day seems to show us more of what this beautiful area of the country has to offer. Last year we were not able to join the May Cruise that visited Olympia, so we are excited and look forward to having that area to explore with our fellow boaters. Please visit the Cruise Schedule section of our Web site at on a regular basis and check for updates. Cruise directors are still needed for the May and July Short Cruises. If you or someone you know might be interested, please or call me at olavnp@yahoo.com, or (cell). IMPORTANT NOTES: The Cruise Directors meeting has been moved to March 18 at 5 p.m. at the Wreck Room. Boaters heading to Canada this year: Please apply for your DTOPS decal as soon as possible. You can t complete your I-68 application form without it! This takes two to three weeks to process. I-68 application forms: If you want to apply with the PLYC group, I need to get it by April 5. The I-68 form is on the PLYC Web site s Cruise Schedule page. I have also ed this information to you. The I-68 processing day with Customs and Border Protection has been set for April 26, but the time has been moved to 10 a.m. until noon. Please remember, we are looking for everyone s feedback, so please complete the Cruise Survey and get it to me by March 10. Wreck Room Highlights by Peggy Kulm, WR Events & Scheduling Coordinator February brought us themed Pot Luck Wednesdays, fun appetizers on Fridays, and a great Mardi Gras celebration with terrific decorations. Be sure to see the write up by Deanne Pederson who took charge of this grand event. By the time you read this another month of Birthday celebrations will have taken place. We had 12 members with birthdays in January join us for the celebration. Be sure to see the photos in this edition and of course, those 3 (Continued on page 4)

born in February will have the same "photo op" in an upcoming Jib Sheet. Speaking of March, we have lots going on. Make your reservation for the annual St. Patrick's Day party coordinated by Sharon Lynch on Sunday, March 17. Your board members will be hosting the annual Officers Open House on March 9, and the last Wednesday pot luck on March 13 will feature soups; look for some more details in your March s. Members of the Port Townsend Yacht Club will be at the WR on March 15 and as we return to our usual Friday/Saturday openings on March 22, the Navy Yacht Club Everett will join us for appetizers on Friday and a Pot Luck on Saturday. Don't forget the Marine Exchange on March 29. Spring is getting a great start at the WR in April with the Annual Spring Cleaning, Ladies Golf Lunch, Training Day, and our last Marine Exchange for the year. We will also be the hospitality center for the Port Ludlow kitchen tour. Lost and Found: none of our lost items found their way home last month. As a reminder, they include: black Nikon camera lens cover, Contigo steel thermos cup; red Santa hat with white fringe; nonprescription large sunglasses with pink frames and lens; small leather holder for glasses; and a Long Trails Golf Club ball cap (khaki colored). If any of these items sound familiar, stop by the WR to take them home, otherwise, they will go to a worthy cause. And in case you were wondering how our "snow birds" are faring, be sure to see the photos from David and Jerri Reid at the PLYC Arizona Outstation as our members cheered for their favorite Super Bowl teams. For those who remain in Port Ludlow, your help at the WR would be appreciated. As I write this column, we still have volunteer opportunities in March. As always, I encourage you to sign up for a shift. It s a great chance to socialize and have fun while helping the club! January Birthday Celebration at the WR A photo and greetings from our unofficial, but well represented PLYC outstation in Arizona. News from the Property Officer by Diane Wilcox We have new arrivals at the Ship s Store, located in the Wreck Room. Stop by and check out the following: a variety of soft fleece throws; wine totes; aprons; new blue caps; soft men s pullover sweaters; new women s light-weight fleece jackets; and men s sweaters with the new past commodore logo. We also have our usual PLYC logo items on hand: license plate holders; bistro mugs; assorted men s and women s spring shirts, and burgees. Some items are on sale, too, so stop by and stock up for the cruising season! 4

Women s Group Announces Spring Luncheon in Poulsbo! by Kathleen Taylor, Women s Group Events Coordinator Please join the PLYC Women's Group for a day of creativity and friendship on Monday, April 29. We ll plan to arrive at the Dancing Brush in Poulsbo at 10 a.m. For $6 plus the cost of your chosen item you will be able to play with paint and ceramics to create art or just have fun with color. After a couple hours we will saunter down the street for lunch at Sogno di Vino, an Italian restaurant and wine shop. While we re having lunch, the masterpieces created will remain at the studio for firing and be available at the Wreck Room a week or so later. If you're not interested in wielding a paint brush, come to Poulsbo for a bit of shopping and join us for lunch. We'd love to see you. We will be arranging carpools for this outing so watch for notices via . Also, please consider volunteering for the Women s Group Summer Event on Thursday, June 27. At the moment the list is bare and we could use your help. Please call or me to sign up at or kmmetaylor@gmail.com Faith and begorra! (Did anyone realize that begorra is an anagram for bargoer?) So since St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner, break out your green duds and raise your glass in honor of St. Patrick at the Fourth Annual PLYC "Wearin' of the Green" St. Patrick's Day Bash. The normal complement of Wreck Room spirits will be supplemented by some brews from the Old Sod, along with the specialty drink of the night The Shamrock Vapor- Lock (don t bother looking it up, it s special for PLYC!). Chef Leonard Johnson of Mystery Bay Seafood will be cooking up hot Reubens served with Irish potato salad, cole slaw and a pickle. The Chef has promised a special treat for appetizers. As in years past, you can count on a dessert of crème de menthe brownies. Join us for a festive celebration on St. Patrick's Day, Sunday March 17 at 1700 hours at the Wreck Room. The cost is $15 per person. Please mail your check payable to PLYC by March 10 to Sharon Lynch, 4123 Paradise Bay Road, Port Ludlow, WA If you have questions, please call or Sharon at ; jflynch@olyridge.net 5

PLYC Celebrates Mardi Gras! Who are those masked people? Why, revelers of course! Actually, 61 Mardi Gras revelers participated in our 2013 Mardi Gras Mombo party. See the photos in this edition. Deanne and Olav Pedersen hosted the event. The evening included Pat O Brien s Hurricanes, red beans and rice, shrimp Creole, biscuits and cornbread. Of course, bread pudding with hard sauce and mini pecan pies were offered to complete the feast. With the help of our bartenders Wade Crouch and Olav Pedersen, all were supplied with adequate libations for the evening. The decoration and serving crew, Peggy Kulm, Judy Newell, Beth Crouch, Kathy Kubesh and her husband Steve Hall, were instrumental in getting all the decorations up the day before. A big thank you to all who attended. Deanne is already planning Mardi Gras 2014 on March 4. Perhaps some jambalaya and stuffed grilled pork chops? Save the date! See you next year. New Member Gallery Welcome Aboard Daniel and Billie Land have lived in various places around Washington before moving to Port Ludlow. They re working professional engineers with plans to retire soon. Also, they re not snow-birds. They like the weather here (as do so many of us)! Daniel and Billie are sailors and own Dark Star, a Ta Shing Taswell 43. They enjoy sailing in Desolation Sound, the Broughtons, and the West Coast of British Columbia, and they try to take six or more weeks off each summer. The Lands have been members of the Bellingham Yacht Club for more than 20 years. Daniel also holds a Coast Guard Masters License, inshore and coastal. The Lands were sponsored for membership by Brett and Sue Oemichen. (Continued on page 7) 6

John and Patty Willis: John and Patty bought their Port Ludlow home last August, and also have a winter home in La Habra Heights, CA. They have two grown children. John retired from Boeing, and Patty still works in California, but telecommutes from Port Ludlow. Both he and Patty are private pilots. They also are non-commercial winemakers! The Willises have been sailing since 1990, and bought a new MacGregor 26, Seafox, in Seafox is currently in Everett, but will move to Port Ludlow Marina next spring. John and Patty were sponsored for membership by Diane Purdy, and Mike and Kathy Larkin. Marina Project 2013 by Kori Ward, Marina Manager The marina has contracted with AMO Construction and Elite Electrical to rehabilitate the east side of D dock. AMO began work on D dock on February 11. They are replacing the whale stock, thru-rods, triangle frames, triangle fillers, and installing all new heavy duty thru-bolted cleats. They are on schedule to complete their work by March 15. Elite Electrical will be coming in behind AMO and replacing the aging electrical system on the east side of D dock. There will be new dock boxes with 30 amp power heads for slips 36 to 40 feet, and single 30 and 50 amp power heads for the 50-foot slips located on the east side of D dock. E dock was rehabilitated in this same manner approximately four years ago. We hope to continue with this improvement plan to other docks year after year. We also contracted with Leviathan Underwater Construction in late 2012 to conduct a piling survey. I was pleased to see that over 75 percent of our pilings are in good condition. Leviathan added sealers and caps to all of the pilings in the marina, which extends their life. You may have noticed we dismantled the aging dinghy dock. The marina staff is building a replacement dock this month. The demand for dinghy storage is down, so the new dock will accommodate only one rack with 11 spaces. 7

Board Meeting Highlights for February 6, 2013 by Judy Perrotta, PLYC Secretary Second reading for Daniel and Billie Land sponsored by Brett and Sue Oemichen discussed and M/S/P. The board discussed a request from Roy Kraft that Bill and Lu Whitney (who had resigned) be made honorary members. The proposal was heartily M/S/P. It was decided that the mailboxes at the Bay Club and the Marina Office will be closed. Fleet Captain Olav Pedersen has volunteered to craft a larger wooden box that will be placed in the Ship s Store area in the Wreck Room. Treasurer BJ Luce reported club assets of $250,049. Commodore Brett Oemichen will submit a filing to the LCB requesting approval for dancing in the Wreck Room.
