And it became standard for champagne, as the most elite of wines, to be used for the christening. The tradition developed that a female would do the honors and be named the sponsor of the ship. And maritime superstition held that a ship that wasn t properly christened would be considered unlucky. 2 From the Commodore Roy Keck This year s boating season is fast approaching, as of the first of May members have renewed Club membership and paid the annual moorage, but may not be ready for boating yet. Washington State requires every boat captain under the age of 60 to complete Washington State Boater Cards training, renew our boat license with 2015 tabs as of July 1 st and have liability insurance on all our vessels. The club and the Benton County Sheriff Boat Patrol will host and sponsor a Washington State Boater s Education Card training session at the Clubhouse Saturday June 14 th from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. This training is free and available to both members and the general public (potential new members). A course Completion Certificate will be provided to submit with a $10.00 fee to Washington State for the card. The club will provide free morning spud nuts & coffee, BBQ lunch with hamburgers & fixings and afternoon treats for all attending. Class size is limited to around thirty on a first come, first serve basis; call and reserve your spot ASAP. As part of our ongoing efforts in transitioning the RYC club from a Parking Lot for Boats to a Resort/Retreat for the enjoyment of all members, their families and friends we hosted an open house and set up an information booth on April 25, 26 and 27 as part of the Columbia Point Boat and RV Show. We owe a special thanks to Dave Brown, Gary Scofield, Doug Larsen, the Carlisles, Linda Munson, Jonet Sudduth, Rolf Skorge, and Brent Schindehite for sharing the club s story with prospective members. The club will also sponsor another Saturday Suddenly in Command class by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on May 3 rd for those First Mates that may find themselves at the helm sometime (see attached flier). The Debris Barrier continues to perform well and the Richland Boat Basin is nearly tumble weed free. It did not perform as well last winter under low river water conditions and may need some modifications to accommodate low and high river water conditions. Members interested in visiting reciprocal clubs should get a current RYC Membership Card available at the May 6 th general membership meeting. From the Vice Commodore Obie Amacker Spring has not quite settled in yet, but there has definitely been an increased interest in our yacht club. Membership actions approved at the last general membership meeting included the addition of one new member, Tom Savage - slip D2W. During the month of April five membership applications were processed. These new member applications will be presented at the May 6 general membership meeting. Come to the meeting and welcome the new members. To promote an information exchange with prospective new members, a compilation of useful forms has been placed in a binder located under the mailboxes, to the right, as you enter the clubhouse. The binder contains membership applications, moorage request forms, and gas card applications that can be shared with prospective members or used by active members needing to submit a form/application. Each member is an ambassador of our club and I encourage you to be open, friendly, and accommodating to visitors and prospective new members. May

3 From the Rear Commodore Dave Brown Unfortunately due to many activities Easter weekend, the wine tasting event hosted by Cathy Widhalm was postponed to a later date. The next events for our club will be a RYC/CIYC shared event day on May 10 th starting in the morning with a Boaters Swap Meet hosted by Clover Island Yacht Club and ending at our clubhouse with Opening Day hosted by Nancy Hubbard. Cinco de Mayo - Spanish for "the fifth of May," celebrates the defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, Many celebrate the day with dancing, music, food and beverages. At Clover Island Yacht Club, it's just a great excuse for a fiesta! Our members are invited to Come shake your maracas at this celebration. Bring your amigos for food, cocktails, entertainment, giveaways, and lots of fun. Mariachis will perform as you enjoy your dinner, premium margaritas, and don t miss the kid s piñata! See the attached flier for details. Boater Swap Meet - It's time to clean out the garage again and bring any boating equipment you no longer need to a joint club event the morning of May 10th at the parking lot of Clover Island Yacht Club. We all have extra dock lines, life jackets, fenders and other things we don't need because we upsized or downsized our boat. We'll have an area in the middle of the parking lot marked off for our members to display their goods. There's no charge to participate, either as a buyer or seller, and you set the prices on your items. See the attached flier for details. Opening Day Following the Boater Swap Meet on the 10 th, Nancy Hubbard is organizing a social event at the clubhouse. Event starts at 1pm with Boat Christenings starting at 2pm. Come toast to the good luck of the boats and their captains. Please RSVP for christenings so we can have certificates printed. There will be Horse Races and activities for kids of all ages so bring a little spending money. The Mexican potluck starts at 6pm; so bring your favorite recipe, some sides to share and join the fun. The club will provide beverages for all ages. Nancy if you have questions at ankhubbard@charter.net. Mothers Day Brunch - Wake up late the next morning, May 11 th and enjoy our Mothers Day Brunch starting a 10am hosted by The RYC Dads. Mothers are free and members and guests are $5 each. I need volunteers to help with prepare food and clean-up afterwards, give me a call at or at dbrowns77.db@gmail.com to get on the helper list for the Mothers Day Brunch. Beach Party Get those tank tops and flip flops out of storage. Planning starts in May for this event; see the attached flier for setails. Deb Carlisle is looking for raffle donations, let her know at djcarlisle@gmail.com. This event sells out early and requires payment in advance. Leave a note with the number of people and your check made out to Richland Yacht Club in Bruce s mailbox inside the clubhouse to reserve your day in the sun. From the Dock Captain Gary Scofield Again-a big THANK YOU to those who attended the April dock work party. Unless we get an influx of tumbleweeds there will not be a work party scheduled in May. May

4 Dock Painting - The dock painting project should start sometime in middle to late May. The painting contractor will shut down one ramp at a time then prepare and paint each security gate before moving to the next ramp and gate. Please use an open ramp and gate and avoid the areas closed for preparation and painting. Weather permitting the painting should be completed by June 1st. That Sinking Feeling - Mark Allen of Allen Marine Services will be replacing floats under certain areas of the docks. He has been instructed to only take direction from me as he is charging our club by the hour; so try not to interrupt his work. Please contact me if you have questions or recommendations about his areas of work. Class C Operator Training - Several club members with Connell Oil gas cards have not completed the training necessary to use the clubs fueling system. Without this EPA required training and certification your gas card maybe turned off by Connell Oil. Roy Keck will hold a 15 minute training class at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, May 6th just prior to our May 6 th general membership meeting. Please me at gscofield08@gmail.com or call at to reserve your place for this training session. From the Building Coordinator - Bob Gray May Roof I am working with our roofing contractor to re-evaluate the reoccurring leak. Looks like we need to disassemble part of roof to identify and fix the problem. I suspect the initial roof construction may have been faulty. We will repair/paint the interior ceiling after roof is fixed. Porthole windows The contract is now in place to replace the port-hole windows on the clubhouse that have degraded seals. Spiders/yellow jackets Pest control will spray 3-4 times this season around the Clubhouse and bushes to provide better control. Wi-Fi We had some system down time last month but coverage is restored. Ice machine on patio We had a short outage caused by a breaker that tripped; probably during welding to repair the flag pole. It is now up and running. Sprinkler System The irrigations system is back on line for the season; our lawn should be looking fine for opening weekend. If you notice there's something wrong in or around the clubhouse please give me a call at or me at rhgray02@msn.com. Your calls are appreciated so I can coordinate with our service providers. From the Corresponding Secretary Bruce Carlisle Stay in Touch - I send the Yacht Talk, all hands notices, and work party notices to all club members to keep you up on club events. If you are not receiving these I may not have your correct address. Drop me a line at richyachtclub@gmail.com and I will set the record straight. If you are the last remaining dinosaur without an address there are printed copies on the table just inside the clubhouse entrance to the right. Loose your club access card? We have thin credit card styles that fit in your wallet without adding a lot of bulk. Also available are more substantial cards with a slot for a neck lanyard. We also have fobs that you can put on your key ring. There is a $5 charge for replacements. Drop me a line at richyachtclub@gmail.com and I will make one up within a few days.

5 Good of the Order The Yacht Talk The Voice of the Richland Yacht Club The club s standing rules were revised to reflect new moorage rates as approved at the April general membership meeting. The revised wording is as follows. VI.4. Moorage Fees: New moorage assignments are prorated to the nearest whole month, based on an April 1 to March 31-moorage year.
