It is the fourth time one of the world's most notable sporting events, visits Gothenburg, and again, the city has a chance to be on display to a worldwide audience. By creating a worldclass event, we consolidate Gothenburg's position as one of Northern Europe's leading event cities. At the same time, the event represents an important milestone that sheds light on the city's two largest urban development projects, Älvstaden and the work for Gothenburg's 400th anniversary in It is about joining the city over the river with the common goal of being a sustainable growing city - open to the world. Using international events to draw attention to the development of new areas is nothing new in Gothenburg. This was done with Volvo Ocean Race 2002 at Eriksberg, which was then redeployed from a shipyard to a residential area and at the same time in 2006 at Lindholmen, which today hosts university campus, Lindholmen Science Park, several headquarters and companies. 6 How to find us The event venue Race Village is situated at Södra Frihamnspiren, at the heart of Gothenburg harbour. It is easily accessed by public transport ferry from Stenpiren as well as buses or trams and on foot or by bicycle. The venue is known to many as the Banana Pier, famous for events such as the STCC City Race and the Metal Town music festival, as well as for The Docks club. It s 1,300 nautical miles and starts on 10 June. What s going to make the difference between the winners and losers on this one? Westerly Storm Track: Although it s short and starts just a few days before the summer solstice this could still be a very tough leg. The route takes the fleet a long way north, and into the path of any low pressure systems moving down the Westerly Storm Track, the conveyor belt of east-bound low pressure systems that prowl around the Arctic. If they get hit by a low pressure system it will be wet and fast... but it s summer, and just as likely a scenario will be that the Sub-Tropical High Pressureknown locally as the Azores High (a stable, semistatic area of High Pressure) will have drifted north and light winds will dominate. A lot of legs have finished in Gothenburg; sometimes the fleet have come up from the south, and sometimes down from the north. Either way, it has produced some spectacular finishes, not the least of which was the four-way battle in Just a mile separated the leaders as they reached the offshore islands that protect the city, and it was only by ducking inshore to avoid the tide that gave ASSA ABLOY the win on the line. 11 In-Port Race The Volvo Ocean 65 fleet will compete in the In-Port Race on Sunday, 17 June starting at 1400 local time and lasting approximately mins. The fleet will complete a 'fly-by' at Aarhus offering a one-off view of the race for the Danish public. Denmark has a long and rich history with the Volvo Ocean Race, twenty-five Danish sailors have competed in the race to date and two teams have raced under the Danish flag SAS Baia Viking in and Team Vestas Wind in It s Northern Europe and it s the summer, so this is less about climate and all about weather. The fleet could get anything from a slow crawl south in light winds, to an upwind slog in 35 knots. The Dutch are legendary offshore sailors, right back to Conny van Rietschoten the original Dutch Flyer and the only skipper to win back-to-back Volvo Ocean Race/Whitbread trophies. 14 Martin Strömberg - Ambassador for Gothenburg The sailor Martin Strömberg from Gothenburg is the only Swedish sailor in the Volvo Ocean Race "It is a honour to be an ambassador to the port stop in Gothenburg and I want to help highlight the public party in Frihamnen," says Martin Strömberg. Martin Strömberg, 35, is now entering his fourth Volvo Ocean Race. He was for the first time with the Nordic crew Ericsson 3 in the Volvo Ocean Race Then he won the competition with the French team Groupama before joining Dongfeng Race Team in the edition and sailing into his hometown of Gothenburg. "Going home and being received by the crowd in Frihamnen is one of the biggest moments of my career. Martin Strömberg is now sailing with Dee Caffari s Turn the Tide on Plastic team, a young team consisting of as many men as women who sail under the United Nations flag. With its participation in the competition, the team wants to highlight the United Nations Environment s campaign Clean Seas: Turn the Tide on Plastic to combat plastic contaminants in the ocean. Racing around the world is a unique experience, not least because you get to know other cultures in other ports. "I think Gothenburg can show cities like Auckland and Cape Town how to receive the Volvo Ocean Race. As ambassador to the port stop, I want to attract more people to be part of the party. As official ambassador for the port stop in Gothenburg, Martin Strömberg will, among other things, report from on board Turn The Tide on Plastic and to the Volvo Ocean Race Gothenburg social media. 14

15 Legends Race Legends boats will race the final leg at the same time as those vying for the winner s trophy of the Volvo Ocean Race , about 462 nautical miles from Gothenburg in Sweden to The Hague in The Netherlands, in June Since the start of the very first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973, 12 races have been completed and to celebrate, legendary boats from any of the previous races are invited to join today s sleek ocean racers for an extravaganza not ever seen before. Round the world racing was a very new and very brave idea in the seventies. Some considered it impossible, but there were many who wanted to do something adventurous and, over the years, the race has become more successful than ever could have been imagined. The Legends Race will start at 1315 on Thursday, 21 June, 45 minutes before the Volvo Ocean Race fleet start the final leg at 1400 local time. A full schedule of Legends Race events will be arranged, both in Gothenburg and in The Hague after the finish. 16 Pro-Am Races Pro-Am Racing is an opportunity for VIP guests to go sailing and 4 races will take place over the June. Invitations to race on board are only issued by the teams. Press Conference The Leg 11 departure skippers press conference is provisionally scheduled for Wednesday, 20th June at 0930 local time (subject to media demand) to be held in the Race Boat Experience tent at the Race Village. On arrivals, media interviews can be arranged with the relevant team press officers on site. Tour of a Volvo Ocean 65 On Wednesday, 20 June we can offer media a tour of the VO65 Turn The Tide On Plastic at local. To book a place, please amy.monkman@volvooceanrace.com Media accreditation Please sign up to media accreditation prior to your arrival. You can do this by filling in your details on the following link: volvooceanrace-accreditation.com On the day that you arrive at the Race Village, please collect your accreditation from the Accreditation Centre. Please ensure that you have your ID with you. Please note, we can accept accreditation on the day, however the process may take some time. Media Centre Opening Hours (local time) The Media Centre will be open daily between hours local time. The Media Centre will also be open for for each boat arrival if this takes place outside of normal office hours. Press Boat Allocation Media must apply in advance for a place on the photo boats or media spectator boat. To apply for a place, please press@volvooceanrace.com or register on site at the Media Centre. The cut-off time to apply for a place on a press boat is 1600 local time on the day prior to the scheduled event eg arrivals, In-Port Race and Leg Start. Places are limited and are granted upon merit of the the media assignment. The decision on press boat places is made by the Organising Authority. 16
