12 Mansa Punjab About Mansa Mansa is a district of Punjab state with its admin is trative headquarters located at Mansatown. Earlier, it was a part of the Phulkia Sikh Dynasty from 1722 till There is aninteresting story associated with the district. Natives believe that Bhai Gurdas, fromdhingar in the Mansa district founded the place Mansa. Moreover, at this place he gotmarried to a girl belonged to the Dhaliwal Jat Sikh. One day he came to his in-law shouse and asked them for his wife, whom he wanted to take along with him. But his in-laws refused to send her back with him which caused him to s it in meditation before thehouse of his in-laws. Finally, they realised their mistake and agreed to send theirdaughter with him. But at that time he refused to take her back with him and declaredthat he had renounced all the worldly pleasure. With the passage of time the Smadh ofbhai Gurdas was created in his memory and every year a big fair is held in this place inthe months of March and April. The district was carved out from the erstwhile Bathindadistrict and em erged as a separate district in the year Geographically, the district lies at 29 98'N latitude, 75 38'E longitude and 218 m altitude. The district encompasses a geographical area of 2,198 sq. km. and it is bounded by Bathinda district on the North West, Sirsa district of Haryana on the South and Sangrur district on the East. The climate of the district is extremely hot and dry in the summer. The actual rainfall in the district was mm in the year of Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Mansa, Budhlada and Sardulgarh. Moreover, it comprise 5 towns and 238 villages. There are 1 lok sabha seats and 3 assembly constituencies in the district. According to 2011 census the district has a population of 7,69,751(persons) out of which 4,08,732 are males and 3,61,019 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 883 (females for every 1000 males). In the year the population growth rate in the district was 11.76% including 11.54% are males and 12.01% are females. The major religion in the district are Sikh and Hindu with 77.75% and 20.34% of the total population respectively. The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agriculture. The place Mansa is located in the cotton belt of Punjab state. Therefore, one can see the pure white bloom of cotton in the whole region in the months of November and December. Mansa is famous for its cotton production and for this very reason it is popularly known as "Area of white gold". In terms of industries, Mansa is scantly industrialised yet it has some trade and industry in its urban areas. Mansa is fortunate enough to have the largest Thermal Power Plant of Punjab which has a capacity to produce 1980 MW of electricity. In the year the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 7,36,359 lakhs at current price. 5

13 Punjab Mansa The students of the district are performing well in various fields of education in spite of the fact that it has a few reputed educational institutions. The two well known educational institutions in the district are Government Nehru Memorial Post Graduate College and S.D. Kanya Mahavidyala College. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 61.83% including 67.31% are males and 55.68% are females. The district has some centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Budhlada town, in the district got its name from the two brothers of the khatri caste named Budha and Ladha. At the very beginning it was a part of the Kaithal State. Another renowned place of interest in the district is the Sardulgarh tehsil, popularly known as Rori Dhudal in the earlier periods. With the passage of time the name of the place was changed to Sardulgarh since it was a favourite hunting spot for Sardul Singh, the Prince of Patiala. The beautiful ancient Sardulgarh fort in this tehsil also draws many visitors from far off places. The Samadhi of Bhai Gurdas in Mansa is a notable tourist s destination as well. 6
