1 Skijammers P.O. Box 637 Wayzata, MN Hotline: (952) BRYN MAWR/EDINA/LAKE HARRIET BUS STOPS PSIA and AASI Member School NEWS/INFO/SCHEDULES Safety, Fun and Learning WELCOME TO THE 2019 SEASON!!! Welcome to another Jammers season! Since 1964, our goal has been to help young people learn snow sports in a safe and fun environment. Our staff includes the former President of the Professional Ski Instructors of America, Central Division (PSIA-C), as well as eight current and former members of the PSIA-C Education Staff, and one member of the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI) Education Staff. Our instructors are dedicated professionals who will continue to develop the innovative, industry leading programs that makes Skijammers Ski and Snowboard School such a unique experience. For those of you new to the program, your child will be spending the eight Saturdays in a safe, fun, and supervised environment, at a different local ski area each week. They will ski and ride with the same instructor each week, in an environment that will allow them to learn a variety of new skills appropriate to their age and experience level. Approximately four hours each day will be spent in class, with additional freeskiing depending on the group s age and experience. For our Instructors, pre-season training has already begun. We again have a large contingent of returning, highly experienced instructors, who will all go through intensive indoor technical training as well as on-hill teaching and skiing clinics. Skijammers Ski and Snowboard School is a member school of PSIA and AASI, and most of our instructors continue their education through these organizations. For your child this means very solid skill development, thorough safety training, and familiarity with the sport, its equipment, and local venues. We look forward to seeing your kids on January 5, and hope you will mark your calendars for Fun Day, February 23, 2019 at WELCH VILLAGE where the entire family is invited to join us for the our final event. We will have a cookout, race competition, face painting, costumes, and lots of fun and games. Welcome to a great Minnesota winter tradition, ~The Skijammers Team PRE-SEASON MAILING All families will receive a mailing prior to the season. Included in the mailing are Skijammers and/or Boardjammers Shoulder Patches in iron-on form, Equipment Stickers for skis and boards, and Schedules including lift ticket prices and bus schedules. If you did not receive the mailing, please let us know at info@skijammers.com Note: Patches should be placeed approximately 3 down from shoulder. 5 Program Information Guide PSIA and AASI Member School 1. LEAVE TIME The Jammers Buses leave at 8:00 a.m. In order to give kids enough time to load equipment and find a seat on the bus, parents should plan to drop skiers and riders at the Bus Location between 7:45 and 7:55 a.m. Note: The exception is the weeks you will be travelling to Buck Hill and Afton Alps. The busses will leave for Buck Hill and Afton Alps at 9:00 a.m., and return home from Buck Hill at 4:00 p.m and Afton Alps at 4:30 p.m.. 2. EQUIPMENT, CLOTHING AND PATCHES All Jammers are required to have their own equipment and a ski/board bag. Our retail partners have available, nylon zippered ski/board bags which are for sale to Jammers. Label and Personalize the equipment bag, including your first and last name and your telephone number, so that it can easily be identified! LABEL ALL EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING. Identification stickers are for labeling skis/boards to prevent mixups at the ski areas. Enclosed is an extra sticker for your helmet, too. Remember that many Jammers have virtually identical skis, boards and bindings! Use a PERMANENT INK PEN to fill in your Jammer s name and phone number. Remove the backing and put one sticker on each ski, one on a snowboard and one on a helmet. The Skijammers/Boardjammers Patch should be sewn/ironed on the left sleeve 3 inches from the shoulder seam. Be certain to label ALL of your children s clothing: Jacket, hat, goggles, mittens et al! Ski/Board Boots MUST be worn throughout the day. NO shoes or afterski boots should be brought along. Boots should be loosely buckled on the bus to keep feet warm. Ski/board bags should be left on the bus trailer. Other miscellaneous belongings can be left in the chalet, however, we advise discretion in what is brought; theft is prevalent in chalets. Leave extra clothing bags home. Nothing should be left at the class cones! The buses are locked during the day. Dress your children warmly with turtlenecks, neck warmers, and face masks on cold days! Goggles also help keep the face warm on extremely cold days. Mittens are warmer than gloves. 3. BUSES The buses leave promptly at 8:00 a.m. PLEASE BE PROMPT TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD EACH SATUR- DAY EVENING AT 5:00 p.m.. **Exception for BUCK HILL AND AFTON ALPS: The busses will leave for Buck Hill and Afton Alps at 9:00 a.m., and return home from Buck Hill at 4:00 p.m and Afton Alps at 4:30 p.m.. Discuss with your children, the attached Jammers Code of Conduct. There are no bus seating assignments made, but younger Skijammers and Boardjammers students (6-10 years) usually ride Bus #1 and #2 (look for the bus number in the front window). Older students tend to ride on the higher numbered buses. NOTE: Non-Jammers are NOT allowed to ride on Jammers buses or attend ANY Jammers Saturday as a guest. Page 5
6 Program Information Guide (Continued) 4. LIFT TICKETS Lift tickets are purchased on the bus. Please send a CHECK (NOT cash) with EACH child (often children in the same family ride different buses). Make the check out to the ski area for the exact amount of the ticket. Bookkeeping problems arise when checks are made to the area for more than the lift ticket price in order to get cash for lunch, etc. 5. LUNCHES Jammers Alpine School strongly urges you to pack a lunch for your child for several reasons including: this will assure your child of a healthy lunch; money sent with children is very often NOT spent on lunch!! It often gets spent on video games and candy! PLEASE: ALL LUNCHES SHOULD BE PACKED IN A BROWN PAPER BAG ENCLOSED BY A LARGE ZIP-LOCK BAG. ALL BAGS SHOULD HAVE STUDENTS NAMES WRITTEN ON BAG. Write your child s name on the container so it can be easily identified. Lunches will be collected by the bus chaperones and brought into the Jammers area of the chalet. Parents are encouraged to send a disposable paper bag with your child s name written clearly on the bag. 6. CANCELLATIONS AND COLD WEATHER As we participate in an outdoor winter activity in Minnesota, temperatures and windchills well below zero are to be expected. Our experience as students, instructors, and parents is that valuable teaching and skiing experiences can be had in very cold temperatures provided students are properly dressed, kept moving, watched closely, and given frequent breaks. Simply stated, our policy is that as long as the roads are safe for the buses we intend to go. In very extreme conditions exceptions may be made. We are especially hesitant to cancel for cold weather early in the season with many Saturdays still ahead of us. Skijammers reserves the right to cancel a trip(s) due to circumstances outside of our control. Road conditions and safe travel are a priority to us and we defer decisions regarding travel conditions to First Student Transportation who communicates with the Minnesota Department of Travel and/or the Minnesota State Patrol. We make every effort to run our scheduled events and understand that due to cold weather and other commitments some parents may choose not to send their children every week. In the event of a Skijammers cancellation(s) during weeks 1 through 5. Skijammers will provide one (1) make-up day on Sunday February 17, This make-up day is scheduled in advance and we cannot run more than one makeup day. In the event of a cancellation during weeks 6 8 there will be no make-up session. Because we make every effort to go on our scheduled trips cancellations may come as late as Saturday Morning. Notice will be posted on the Skijammers Hotline Ext 1, our Facebook and Twitter accounts, and In the event that notification comes at the last minute we will also deploy chaperones to the Bus Stops to notify families. Skijammers provides no refunds in the event of cancellation. 7. INJURIES In the case of an accident, Jammers makes every effort to contact parents. Skijammers works closely with area ski patrols and we are confident in their first aid and medical emergency skills. The National Ski Patrol staff makes final decisions concerning sending a child to the hospital, generally the one closest to the area. If your child has any disabilities or health problems that you did not note on the Medical Information Card, PLEASE LET US KNOW ( ). Please contact us, too, if your insurance company or Saturday telephone numbers have changed since turning in your medical emergency cards. Directors will have the medical information cards with them each Saturday. Page 6
7 The Jammers Code of Conduct Our Jammers Alpine School goals are to teach young people to enjoy learning to ski, ride and race safely in a safe learning environment. The key word here is enjoy fun within reasonable boundaries of safety and common sense. Our intent is to give students enough freedom to enjoy the alpine experience but not at the expense of enjoyment of other students, skiers and riders. Below are Jammers policies and expectations for behavior. We ask you to read through these policies with your Skijammer/boardjammer so that you and your child know what Jammers Alpine School expects each Saturday. I. GENERAL RULES The following rules apply to all Jammers for the full Skijammers & boardjammers Saturday all 8 weeks: A. SAFETY. All students act in such a way that they do not bring harm to themselves or others. This rule applies on the slope (please review Safety Code), in and around the ski chalet, the parking lot, on the bus and at the bus stops. B. RESPECT. All students are considerate to fellow skiers, riders, classmates, instructors, directors, bus drivers, bus chaperones, representatives of the ski area and area guests. C. TEAM BUILDING. All students will work as a group to develop good sportsmanship, support and leadership. II. IN CLASS A. All students must have their skis/boards on and report to their designated class promptly at 10:00 a.m. and after lunch at the time and place designated by the instructor. B. Students are expected to be in class each Saturday. Parents will be notified of any student who rides the bus to the area but does not attend class. III. ON THE BUS A. Please do not bring electronic tablets or gaming devices. We are not responsible for any lost items. B. Students need to ALWAYS remain seated when the bus is moving and talk in normal tones. Excessive noise levels are a distraction to the driver. C. Throwing of ANYTHING (food, clothing, equipment, etc.) is not allowed. D. Each Jammer will be held directly responsible for any damage that occurs to the interiors of the buses. E. In the case of an emergency, the directions of the bus chaperones are to be followed exactly. F. Jammers are expected to ride the bus to and from the ski area. Bus attendance is taken both in the mornings and again at the ski areas before afternoon departure. HOWEVER, if parents plan to take their child home from the ski area, the child MUST BRING A NOTE from the parents and give it to the bus chaperone in the morning. Buses do not leave the ski area until every Jammer is accounted for!! G. Any theft will be dealt with swiftly. H. The safety of our students is our primary concern. Any behaivior that creates an environment that is not children friendly will be dealt with and may include dismisal from the program. Please talk with your children prior to the first bus ride. IV. OUTSIDE OF CLASS A. During unsupervised skiing/riding time we expect students to wait patiently in the lift line for their turn. B. Unsupervised skiing/riding is allowed only on areas of the hill designated by class instructor. C. On cold days there is NO unsupervised skiing/riding. D. NO unsupervised skiing/riding before class on the first day. V. IN THE CHALET Be polite and mannerly while in the chalet particularly while in the lunch line and while eating at the table. Please throw away your garbage after you have finished lunch. VI. SMOKING AND DRINKING Any Jammer who smokes or drinks at any JAMMERS session or function, or while on the bus or in the parking lots, will automatically be dropped from the Skijammers program ON THE SPOT. The parents will be immediately notified and asked to come pick up their child. BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS: WHAT WE INTEND TO DO Jammers Alpine School is fortunate to have a great group of young skiers and riders who are respectful, fun, adventuresome and inclusive... as well as good athletes! In the rare situations where we encounter discipline issues, we will take the following steps to remedy the problem: 1. The first instance of a reported behavior problem will result in the Alpine School Director meeting with the student to discuss the problem. 2. The second instance will result in the Director discussing the problem with the student s parents. 3. Any reoccurrence may result in dismissal from Jammers Alpine School. There will be no refund provided. Page 7
