9 Wolf Creek Ski Trip December By Jay Menger, Trip Captain The Tulsa Ski Club Wolf Creek Trip departed Tulsa promptly at 5:00pm on Wednesday, December 26 with 30 rough and ready skiers and snowboarders. Many of our group were repeaters from previous Christmas trips which I had captained to Monarch: Leslie Mullinax, her son Ian and her mom Gwen Kearns; Dr. Russ Gilstrap with son Logan and daughter Nikki; David Pogue and daughter Margaret; TSC stalwart Kelley Phillips; and Elizabeth Menger and her brother John. Then we had newcomers to the TSC trip scene: Paul Harrell (who drove over from Pea Ridge, AR to join our group); Livia- Nina Gosnell (an Austrian gal); Sheila Edwards; Ryan Bolin, Ethan Smith (a friend of the Pogue family) and Patrick West and his parents Ray and Sarah West, all firsttimers who we hope will b e c o m e c o n f i r m e d regulars with the Tulsa Ski Club! And, Linda Bull brought a group of young people ~ her son Mitchell and daughter Madeleine plus their friends Caroline Pritchett and Sarah. We rounded out our group with some hard core skiers (and partiers): Mike Fullerton, Chuck Harrington, Bill Hull, and Bill Nichols. These guys were exceptional in many c a t e g o r i e s ( s k i i n g, partying on the bus, swiping skis, and chaining up tires. What a group! A trip captain couldn t ask for a better mix of travelers; it was a fantastic trip! As we approached Wolf Creek Pass on our way to Pagosa Springs, we were Ryan, Russ, Leslie, Bill, Bill, and Mike notified that we had to chain up the bus tires; it was 6:00am, and we were about 45 miles from our lodging, the Oak Ridge Lodge. To our dismay, the chains were not the right size for the beefier tires that had been installed on our Kincaid Coach. In spite of the best efforts of our driver Chip and a host of helpers led by Mike Fullerton we could not get the chains to link up. So, after a prolonged roadside layover, the right size chains arrived, and we resumed our journey. To make up for lost time we went directly to the ski area and changed on the bus; we were skiing by 10:00am on day #1 amazing! Our first day went well the snow conditions were superb with a good base and lots of powder; Wolf Creek was 100% open!!! Our The Chain Gang at Wolf Creek Pass get-acquainted Mountain Party capped off our first day. We congregated in the Squirrel s Pub and Pantry located at the Oak Ridge Lodge where we stayed. Beer connoisseurs Ryan Bolin, Bill Nichols, Bill Hull, Chuck Harrington and Paul Harrell got a quick start on sampling the exotic beers. A delicious array of food arrived hand tossed N.Y. style pizza, buffalo wings, green pepper poppers, and zucchini spears kept arriving. We couldn t eat it all, so we contributed to some local pool players who were at this watering hole hostessed by the fantastic Shanah who runs the entire operation; she does everything from reservations to kitchen to bartending incredible!!! Leslie Mullinax and her mom Gwen Kearns enjoyed the comraderie of our group; Sarah and Ray West and son Patrick - 9 -

10 West also hobnobbed; David Pogue and Russ Gilstrap were in the middle of things (as always ), and our newcomers Livia Gosnell and Sheila Edwards had a great time. The young people Ian Mullinax, Logan and Nikki Gilstrap, Ethan Smith and Margaret Pogue, Mitchell and Madeleine Bull, Caroline Pritchett and Sarah and Elizabeth Menger joined in the festivities; a good time had by all! One of the many highlights of the trip was the video recording of some awesome skiing by Wild Bill Hull, Bill Bear Nichols, and Ryan Rocket Bolin. Their skiing exploits at the Alberta Lift area can be viewed on the TSC Facebook site and was recorded by Bill Nichols (with a helmet cam). Watching these guys zipping through the forest in knee deep powder was both thrilling and inspiring, and I m sure they will represent us well at the Flatlands competitions this year! Yours truly, Jay Menger tagged along with Kelley Phillips, Sheila Edwards and Livia Gosnell who graciously helped me get on and off of the ski lift. My best skiing occurred when I was invited to run with my awesome d au ght er E liz abeth Menger and Ian Mullinax and Logan Gilstrap; my efforts to keep up with them resulted in an e x h i l a r a t i n g a n d successful experience due to the fact that I did not overthink the whole process. On day #4 we departed directly from the Wolf Creek Ski area for our return to Tulsa; changing into traveling clothing while rocketing down the mountain in our Kincaid Coach went smoothly. We picked up pizzas (San Time for lunch Leslie, Bill, and Bill Juan Valley Pizza Company in Alamosa, CO excellent), and then we found an adult beverage store at a wide spot in the road where we restocked our traveling supplies. The party started in short order and was centered on the middle of the coach inhabited by Bill Hull, Paul H a r r e l l, B i l l Nichols, Chuck Harrington, Ryan Bolin and Mike F u l l e r t o n. A variety of food and beverage was generously shared throughout the bus, and the decibel level hit about 300! A quick telephone call to the TSC s fantastic Winter Trip Chair, Terry Gordon, resulted in loud cheers of approval from our Wolf Creek adventurers. This was my third time as a trip captain and I have been on lots of other trips too. I can truly say that I never have had such a good time as we had on Wolf Creek A successful trip is all about The wolf gets its prey! t h e p e o p l e w h o participate. We had a great group, and my thanks to everyone! Also, thanks to Kincaid Coach Lines for safe and c o m f o r t a b l e transportation! Cheers!!! Partying on the bus Chuck and Mike
