2 President s Column By Dana Gray Fifty years and going strong! The Tulsa Ski Club continues t o c e l e b r a t e i t s 50 th anniversary this fiscal year. Our club is healthy, our finances are solid, and our trips are extremely well designed to provide the most value and fun for trip-goers while also being financially feasible for the club. The club continues to offer incredible international trips that provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences. We have really fun monthly SNO and social events including another wonderful holiday party this past December. We re taking steps to modernize our administrative processes and move the club into the 21 st century always looking for ways to make the club stronger and more valuable to members. All of this doesn t happen by chance but rather by the hard work of members who volunteer their time, energy, and effort. This truly is the responsibility of each member in any nonprofit organization. It s important to remember that the Tulsa Ski Club is a nonprofit organization. If you are a member, you support the organization with your dues but the club also needs your support in terms o f l e a d e r s h i p a n d administrative help. We have several members who regularly donate their time to support the club from answering the club s to greeting people at the door. In a couple of months our nominating committee will be formed. They will ask some of you to step up and support the club, to take on the responsibilities of various offices and positions on the board of directors. It is my sincere request that each member will carefully consider what the club means to them. If asked to volunteer by serving on the board, please carefully consider taking your turn in this manner. At some point, every member should support the club with dues, attendance, and volunteer help. If you feel that you have skills that will serve the club in a certain area and wish to volunteer for a position, please let any member of the nominating committee know. 4 Are You Ready? By Tom Buder, SC Race Chair Your ability to enjoy a ski vacation will be greatly enhanced if you improve your ski-specific fitness. Keep in mind that ski conditioning programs should involve exercises that simulate the movements of the sport. Unlike traditional workouts, a ski fitness program should involve dynamic balance, core strength and agility. Purchasing a stability ball and some sort of balance device such as a balance board, exercise disk or Bosu can be helpful. Basic Ski Balance Exercise This exercise helps you develop what is known as fore/aft balance. Stand with your feet in parallel alignment. Keeping your feet flat on the ground, shift your weight back and forth between your heels and your toes. Then, perform the exercise with your eyes closed. Progress the exercise by performing it on one leg at a time. When you gain proficiency, perform the exercise on a balance training device. Carving Exercises Carving is one of the most important skills in alpine skiing. However, since it is not a natural movement, it is sometimes difficult to learn. Stand on a balance training device; preferably a balance disk. Feet should be placed hip width apart, and your knees should be slightly bent. Roll your feet so that you are on the little toe of your right foot and the big toe of your left. Transition, so that your feet are flat on the floor, and then shift your weight to the other side. Perform 20 repetitions daily. Stability Ball Leg Curl Weak hamstrings can cause poor technique, as well as knee injury. This exercise improves balance, works the core and strengthens the hamstrings. Lie on your back with your knees bent. Place your feet on the stability ball, and separate them so that they are pelvic width apart. Lift each vertebra from the floor so that you are in a bridge position. Remain in the bridge as you bend and straighten your legs. Perform three sets of eight repetitions. Be fit; ski great and safe. 5 Cruise the Danube With Tulsa Ski Club! April 11 22, 2012 Visit the beautiful capitals of Eastern Europe! We will see sights in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. The trip starts off with 3 nights in Prague. Then we will transfer to a luxury river cruise ship for 7 more nights on the beautiful blue Danube to visit Vienna, Budapest, medieval villages and more. The trip also includes airfare from Tulsa, transfers, current taxes and fees, sightseeing, wine tasting, entertainment and most meals. The current price is $4272, which includes current taxes and fees. This may change due to currency fluctuation, fuel costs, fees etc., so it is important to get down a deposit as soon as possible to confirm your spot. The hotel and ship are rated deluxe. The ship has nice outside double cabins with bath, air conditioning, and big windows. Meals and tours are supposed to be very good too.
