Mt Hood Meadows Timberline Skibowl Fusion Pass PLAY SKIGO! Great Things About Friends They don t laugh when you slip on an icy sidewalk unless you fall in a really hilarious way! Kind enough to lie and say you re prettier now than you were twenty years ago. It s easier to crash a party with a friend. A friend may throw a snowball at you, but the snowball will not have a rock in it. Our Activities Chair Diane Hicks has come up with a great version of BINGO that will be fun to play and beneficial to the winners AND to the Club. See the attached flier for details and be ready to start the fun at the October meeting! Kick-Off Event Recap Our September 11 Season Kick-off Event held at Vino Veritas was a great success. 6 Member Corner Getting to Know You Kerry Leathers I joined Skiyente the fall of 1975/1976 which was also my first year of skiing. At that time, Skiyente had the Big Sister thing going on and Diane Hicks was my Big Sister. Diane was my ski instructor at the Bowl. We had nothing but ice and rocks to ski on that year. So, most of our lessons were at Timberline on more ice and rocks. I can tell you about one hundred different ways to come down the Mile backwards! Diane was always calling me Kelly. She will say because my outfit was Kelly Green. So one day, after again being told how to get off the darn lift chair correctly, and again being called Kelly, I said, my name is Kerry. Well, one thing led to another and I found myself in the Blue Ox being introduced to a rowdy bunch of Skiyente ladies. I soon learned they were experienced in beer and wine drinking. Unfortunately, most of what I drank escaped as I was being introduced to the gals sitting around us. Oh well, embarrassing YES. But, I fit right in. You go girl! Over the years, I participated in, Chaired and/or Co-Chaired, On The Rocks fall fitness race at the Bowl, Wine & Cheese, Fireside, King Winter, Spaghetti Feed, Skiyente/Memorial Cup, Maryanne Cup, Thank You Night, Summer Function, Ski conventions, Mt. Hood Museum, Pacrat races, Golden Rose, the best ever Car Rally hosted by Diane Hicks & Kerry Leathers, and numerous other events. I held the offices of Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, handled the Federal/State tax filings, DOJ & Secretary of State filings. I was responsible for IRS registering of the Club under IRS code 501(c)(4) Not For Profit Social Organization. Working in the corporate world didn t allow for many ski trips. My only three was a Schnee Vogeli Bend trip with white out conditions at Bachelor. So, we all jammed into the hotel hot tub and ate Gillsdorf s special brownies. There was a Schnee Sun Valley trip where I spent the weekend in bed with food poisoning. Again, a not-on-my skis trip for me. The best trip was a road trip with Diane Hicks to Nevada. We skied Heavenly and Squaw Valley. That s when I learned the easiest runs are not necessarily at the bottom of the runs. So, you d better not be drinking too much at the top! We wasted no time having lots of laughs and fun. Here are some questions asked of Kerry and her answers: 6

7 1. 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s,: Which decade do you love the most and why? I like the 60s the most aside from the violence, times were easier. I prefer the soul music of the 60's. It just made you feel good. 2. What s the best piece of advice you ve ever been given? My high school French teacher instilled in us, There is no such word as can t. You can and will find a way if you want to bad enough. Life is what happens when you re making other plans. 3. What was the worst job you ever had? I worked as a secretary for Pieter Kiewit & Sons to a team engineers. It was back in the day of steel ball IBM typewriters and carbon paper. All bids were government, an original page with many carbon pages and no typing errors allowed. 4. If you had to teach a class on one thing, what would you teach? I would teach finance with emphasis on money management & investments for early retirement. 5. Do you have any lifelong friends because of Skiyente? Who are they and why are they so special? I have many lifelong friends from being involved in Skiyente. I value those friendships for the many memories, laughs and special times we ve shared. I know the Sisters have my back should I need them and I would have theirs if asked. I do not wish to name names. Those friends know who they are. A big hug goes out to them. PACRAT Skiyente has been very involved with racing since our beginnings in In fact, that is one of the main reasons Maryanne Hill started our Club! We continue to be a mighty powerhouse even though we are a small club. If you are at all interested in recreational racing, please talk to Meg Spillman, our Race Director. PACRAT is a fun race league of five races on Mt. Hood organized around clubs of the Northwest Ski Club Council (NWSCC). Sign-ups are underway with the deadline of early December being here before you know it! Looks like Skiyente will fill at least TWO teams this year! Go Skiyente Ski/Board Racers! There are tentative dates available on the PACRAT website, Pacrats.org. Please remember these are NOT yet agreed to by the ski areas and are likely to be tweaked a bit. Final dates will probably be available in November. Those final dates will be added to Skiyente s calendar. 8 News from the Big League Mikaela Shiffrin 2.0: Featured in Ski Racing Excerpt from USSA Website By Megan Harrod September, Recently, in a three-hour interview with Ski Racing Media, three-time Olympic medalist Mikaela Shiffrin reflected on the most successful season of her career yet the highs and lows and everything in between. "The first half of 2018 was remarkable for Mikaela Shiffrin. During the season that began in late 2017 and concluded in the spring of 2018, she podiumed 18 times and won 12 World Cup races in three of the sport s four disciplines." Shiffrin's three downhill podiums "silenced doubters about her ability and progression in downhill and super-g. Then, she won a gold and silver medal at the Olympics in South Korea and put a cherry on top with her second overall FIS Ski World Cup title in as many years, and her fifth slalom title in six seasons. "And yet, Shiffrin struggles under the mantle of greatness. Fans, sponsors, media, and Shiffrin herself, have come to expect evermore podiums. Even in a golden year like 2018 where she clobbered the field in the final slalom of the season, beating the second-place finisher by almost two seconds she feels like she could have carried more speed, won more medals, taken more risks. Just more." Shiffrin's goals for ? As you can imagine, they're big. Because "big" is the only way for this 23-year-old athlete one of the fiercest and most focused competitors on the circuit. I will judge the coming season the way I always judge a season: results and the accumulation of points and my standing at the end of the season. But this season I ll be looking for results in speed. To be the top name in skiing, that s something that s developed over the years, especially as a result of the Olympics. But for this season, it s all about putting up giant slalom and slalom results, being a contender in Super-G and downhill, and the overall globe. Read the full article on SkiRacing.com Link to Mikaela s bio and race videos on USSA.org 8
