We re still racing on the snow but down in the valley bulbs are flowering and color is beginning to fill our yards (peeking through snow covered flowerbeds at this writing). Plant Sale Facts: Start: Right now! Download the front and back of the plant flyer and put them together to make copies for your friends and neighbors. Packets were available at the March 6 meeting but you may still copy them from pages 5 and 6. Deadline for Orders: Tuesday April 3, meeting night or in Toni s mailbox by April 13. Pick Up Date: Sunday May 6, between 10:00 and 12:00 noon. Only Skiyente members pick up the ordered plants and distribute them to customers. Volunteers are needed at 8:00 A.M. to help sort and organize or distribute. Pick Up Address: Toni Wainwright home (see roster). Website to view plants: These plants practically sell themselves! The baskets are absolutely beautiful and last all summer long. Orders will be here in time for Mother s Day. The funds raised help boost our contributions to our charities of choice: the Mt Hood Cultural Center and Museum and the Erin Nicole Scholarship. Thank you so much. Sell, sell, sell! 2 Suzy Chaffee & Jeannie Hummel 2 Council Corner You may remember her as Suzy Chapstick from those silly 70 s commercials but this Vermont native helped invent ski ballet, becoming a three time World Freestyle Champion. Though she retired from racing after her unsuccessful downhill run in 1968, Chaffee traveled to Olympia, Greece in 1971 to find how the ancient Olympics had lasted more than 1,000 years, when the modern ones were falling apart from scandals. As the first woman on the US. Olympic Committee board, she gathered fellow Olympians Jack Kelly, Bill Bradley and Muhammad Ali for support and convinced the powerful IOC blocks around the world to restore the integrity of the games. Chaffee also led the march down Pennsylvania Avenue for Title IX s Equal Opportunity for Women in School Sports and Education law, then set up the first meeting at the White House (with Billy Jean King and many lawyers) to get it enforced. She was a master of chairlift diplomacy. She convinced Sen. Ted Kennedy to fight for Title IX during rides up Aspen and her chair-side chats with President Gerald Ford in Vail helped push through the Amateur Athlete Act of In the mid 90s, she co-created the Native American Team Foundation, a nonprofit of US. Tribal elders and Olympians that inspired North American ski areas to invite thousands of Native youth to their ancestral lands to ski and snowboard for free. Dubbed Snow Woman by her Navajo and Ute friends, Chaffee recently orchestrated with Vail Academy, a Ute Elder-led snow dance, launching the U.N. s International Mother Earth Day ceremonies during the December 2010 Vail World Cup. Does the picture above (left) look familiar? It should. Suzy Chaffee s unforgettable pose is memorialized in bronze and is located at the Mt. Hood Museum. It was awarded by Suzy to our Jeannie Hummel for Woman of the Year in 1985 for her work on the birth of PASCC and PACRAT at the USRSA Convention in Sun Valley. 3 PACRAT All kinds of stuff happening at the March 11 race! Kiss My Wax holding on to 2nd place! But the Racy Brats slip down one into 4th! Those Schnee Boys jumped into 3rd position, but looking at their placing and upstrikes...they may have topped out point wise. Rattitudes are in a somewhat similar position...so HANG IN THERE SKIYENTE RACERS! WE can do this! All the top teams are so close...we all have to be careful! We all have to show up for the next two races!!!!!! Let's get those Rattitudes ladies! *66 women racers...23 Skiyentes! *10 Kiss My Wax! 9 Racy Brats! 4 Slic Chics! *A lot of Skiyentes bettering their handicap AGAIN! Hurrah! *MANY Skiyente racers were HUGE point earners at this race...congratulations! Nancy, Paula, and Debbie all scored HUGE points in Intermediate and will now be in the Advanced Intermediate, still in good position to earn points in that category. Skiyente will have TEN racers in the Advanced Intermediate group! *Advanced women have a handful of racers moving out of that category giving the 3 Kiss My Wax racers great opportunity to earn points!****all teams need ALL racers at these next two races March 25 and April 1...both at Mt. The first PACRAT race took place in This author credits the founding of recreational racing on Mt. Hood to Gene Bentley. While at a USSA Conference in Colorado Springs in 1983, Gene attended several meetings concerning 2 divisions of racing. The first was the Competitive Division which included Masters, the Europa Cup and World Cup Racing. The second division was Recreational Racing, non competitive. USSA Director of Recreational division at that time was Pat Fuller from Portland. She was very interested in Gene s ideas to promote recreational racing as his passion promoted many well known races to Mt. Hood such as The Grand Marnier Challenge, the Pro Am Race Series, the Bud Cup Series, the Pepsi Challenge, the Skole Bandit Shootout as well as promoting City League, Golden Rose, NASTAR and USSA Masters Races. Racing on a City League team (Coors Silver Bullet) together, Gene Bentley, Gene Hatfield, Jeannie Hummel and Danny Hummel formed an alliance to promote competitive recreational racing. Jeannie worked with Pat Fuller to form the new PASCC Council (now NWSCC) and to encourage membership by promoting the recreational racing for all levels of skiers. Danny, Schnee Vogeli Ski Club President at the time and avid promoter of racing, drew up the logo we still use today. A treasurer was needed and Diane Hicks was the perfect fit for the job. Diane was very involved with USRSA, Recreational Division, PASCC. and the newly formed PACRAT organizers. From the first race of 40 competitors to over 300 one year, Diane is the longest standing member of PACRAT, both board and racing, receiving many awards. During the first 5 years acknowledgement is due to Kathy Winterholler of Skiyente and PACRAT boards and also to Plaza Ski Club ladies, Beth Peters and Rita Furnanz. 4 Annual Tailgate Party Mt. Hood Meadows Parking Lot April 1 Noon Through 4 P.M. 4 By-Laws Changes? Each year we review our by-laws to keep current with our ever changing environment. If you have any suggestions, please bring them to our April 3 meeting. They will be posted and an approval vote or nay will occur at the May 1 meeting. This is your club and you can have it your way! No, this is not an April Fool s joke! Immediately following the last PACRAT race ( or even before the last racer) Skiyentes will be gathering in the parking lot to carry on a tradition started in 1995, our 40th year as a club. Chairs Diane Hicks and Eileen Hines are your hostesses so you know there will be some foolery going on! Be sure to wear your craziest outfit and bring a snack or dessert for all to share. Thank You Night April 17 This year Skiyente extends a sincere thank you to many amazing people, without whom many of our great events could not happen. A warm reception will be held at Oswego Point in Lake Oswego, chaired by 2 of our newer members, Lisa Dierckson and Stacey Lee. Traditionally we give a Crystal Cup award to an outstanding person for their non-solicited assistance and/or service to Skiyente. If you wish to nominate that person, please do so at our April 3 meeting. Our vote will be that night. Stacy and Lisa ask you to bring your favorite appetizer to share with our guests Board of Officers Will we have sunshine as we did in these 2 past tailgate parties? Your new slate of officers will be presented at the April 3 meeting. At this time there are no candidates for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Historian.
