2 Maidenforum Page 2 SUMMER FUN NATIONALS A HIT!!! Page 2 Fuxi Racing Team at the Summer Fun Nationals Up on the Palmer Glacier at Timberline every summer, the USSA puts on the Summer Fun Nationals ( This race lives up to it's name...fun! Alice Jacklet and I raced in the Giant Slalom on Saturday, in the wonderful Mt. Hood sunshine. To be able to ski in the summertime is so unique and FUN! There were about 80 racers of all ages and abilities up there cheering each other on. There were a handful of PACRAT racers and racers from all over the place, including Alaska, Connecticut and Canada as they were already at Timberline for a summer camp or two. Many of the PNSA Masters racers participated as well! We were treated to a delicious BBQ Buffet and an Awards Party with AMAZING prizes and an incredible Silent Auction! FUN times literally from SUN UP to SUN DOWN! This year, the race was held in memory of Jim Estes, Schnee Vogeli member and long time Summer Fun National participant. Jim's daughter, Susie (a friend of Barbie's and mine from grade school) and Jim's son were there to receive a Memorial plaque, and two of his granddaughters raced in his honor. I encourage all Skiyente racers to put this race on your summer schedule for Colleen Heffernan Walter Skiyente Race Director Terry and Colleen Walter racin it up! MT. HOOD MASTERS MANIA 2013 SKI RACE Alice Jacklett on course at the Summer Fun Nationals! The Mount Hood Masters Mania 2013 Ski Race will be held on March 9 and March 10, 2013 at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl. Volunteers and Skiyente Racers will be needed. The Committee will be meeting soon and getting everything in order to have a FUN and ORGANIZED ski race! More details will be coming out in the Fall. SAVE THE DATE!!!
3 Maidenforum Page 3 NWSCC Clubs 4 Play Golf Tournament, Skiyente s Get Her Done! Pag Jacque, Jeannie, Eileen and Louise get teed Skiyente s team Get Her Done The NWSCC Annual Clubs 4 Play Golf Tournament was held on July 22 at the Gresham Golf Course. Six teams participated and Skiyente s best (Colleen Walter and Sandi Shaub) were the volunteers that saved the day. Skiyente s Team Get Her Done Placed second, good job! 18 holes and three hours later, the bar was blessed with our Skiyente sisters! Needless to say a good 8 hour day total was spent at the 4 Play, cheers to another good year! Colleen Walter and Sandi Shaub doin the work! Skiyente Summer Function in Walla Walla This year s Skiyente Summer Function was held on July at the family home of Sandi Shaub s in Walla Walla Washington. Friday was a beautiful evening graced with a fire, roasting marshmallows and a gorgeous sunset. Saturday s highlights started with a big POWER OUTAGE in Walla Walla that affected the first winery that was toured. Jeannie Hummel drove 3 hours round trip to spend a few hours with the group, or was it to taste the wine? We re not sure but we are thinking the former! After touring three wineries, a few people played golf at a 3 hole golf course (wonder how that went?) then headed over to the Walla Walla Onion fest. Great fun for all! Thanks Sandi for the use of your most beautiful home!!
4 Maidenforum Page 4 Mt. Hood Huckleberry Festival and Barlow Trail Days August 24-26th The 28th Annual Mt. Hood Huckleberry Festival and Barlow Trail Days will be held Friday Aug. 24th through Sunday Aug. 26th at the Mt. Hood Village East U.S. Highway 26, near the historic villages of Welches and Brightwood. Friday and Saturday, the event will run from 8am to 7pm and will be featuring evening concerts. Sunday, the event will run from 8am to 5pm. Highlights include the World s Record-Breaking Watermelon Launch on Saturday. This is one event that should not be missed! Other highlights include a Native American Salmon Bake, Native American story telling and lots of delicious Huckleberry pies, tarts, jams and sauces! Race for the Cure Save the date and get on board for the annual Race for the Cure! The race will be held Sunday, September 16th and the Skiyente Ski Club would love to be well represented here so please sign up! It s a great way to make a difference. Any help here would be appreciated. Please contact Sharon Davis (her information is in the roster) if you would like any additional information. Barlow Road Ride - August 25-26th Mt. Hood Century: A Benefit for the Mt. Hood Museum Saturday and Sunday Aug. 25th-26th the Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum is holding an inaugural Barlow Road Ride (aka Mt. Hood Century) to raise funds for the Museum. This is a 100 mile two day road bike tour out and back from the Oregon Trail in Oregon City to Government Camp with an optional trip up the West Leg Trail to Timberline Lodge. Massage and plenty of hydration will be available every 10 miles along the route and a feast will be held at Cascade Ski Lodge. The ride will be beautiful, including riding along the paved Barlow Road, along the Clackamas River, and up the sparkling Sandy River Valley via Marmot Ridge to Zig Zag then up Laurel Ridge to Mt. Hood. All abilities can participate, just choose the starting point that works for you. There will also be a Junior/Senior route that will start in Government Camp on Sunday if you are not into trekking uphill. For more information on this event, check out the NWSCC Website or WATCH FOR AN SOON ABOUT SKIYENTE S VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SATURDAY IN GOVERNMENT CAMP. Far West Athletic Scholarship Awarded at the Far West s Convention Athletic Scholarship Fund Oral Auction: The bidding wars were hot and heavy, and the beneficiary was our own Athletic Scholarship Fund at this year's convention. Thank you to everyone that was involved in this event. The total raised at the convention was $4,435. Not to be out-done, Skiyente Ski Club of Portland, OR, is to be congratulated for raising $1504 for the Erin Nicole Award that is presented annually on their behalf to the top junior woman ski racer from the Pacific Northwest. This is the largest single scholarship thus far raised in the partners program. If you would like to submit any information on upcoming activities that you think the club might be interested in, please contact Meg Spillman at Meg Spillman-editor@skiyente.com
