1 Maidenforum APRIL 2016 VOLUME 60 ISSUE 10 N E W S L E T T E R O F T H E S K I Y E N T E S K I C L U B GENERAL MEETING April 5, 6:30pm Buffalo Gap 6835 SW Macadam Portland Bring good condition books to the meeting. Amanda will take them to Powells for a Skiyente fundraiser. See you there! CALENDAR APRIL April 5 General Meeting See above April 10 Thank You Night April 15 Rat Attack Party April 23 Tailgater Season Ender Bender Schnee Vogeli April 26 Board Meeting Masters Mania was great fun The Masters Mania weekend March 4-6, a joint venture between Skiyente and Schnee Vogeli Ski Clubs, was another great success. As in the past, the Masters racers who participated were very grateful for the Clubs sponsoring the race weekend and appreciated how well the event was organized and supported. Thanks goes out to all of those Club members and friends who helped make it a success. The weekend started out on Friday night with race registration and a lunch-making party at Huckleberry s. Saturday morning saw the action move to Skibowl s Outback Lodge where registration remained open and where volunteers met. There were two full Slalom races planned for the day to be run on Dog-Leg. These slalom races are dubbed the Turkey Slalom and were sponsored by Schnee Vogeli. The fastest woman with combined times from the first race would be awarded the Skiyente Cup. There were 5 female racers and 23 male racers that participated in both races. The weather was surprisingly cooperative given the forecast for the day. The course held up well due to the salting of the course the day before. Serious rain held off until the two races were completed. With many helping hands most of the course teardown was done quickly, but several dedicated Schnee-boys worked very hard to begin the preparations for the Sunday course. Most of us adjourned to The Stube for a bit of libation before going to prepare for the Mardi Gras Gumbo Feed/Awards Ceremony at The Huckleberry. Workers, racers and some locals joined in on the feast of Gumbo and/or Prime Rib. By tradition, all were expecting Skiyente s Erin Our Beth Paraskeva with a combined time of seconds, won the Skiyente Cup Nicole Scholarship s fundraiser drawing. There was great participation and $343 was raised. After dinner, race awards, by class for men and women, were presented and drawing prizes were distributed to lucky winners. The Skiyente Cup was awarded to our Skiyente member, Beth Paraskeva with a combined time of seconds, as the fastest woman of the day s first race. Her name will be engraved on the Cup which is housed at the Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum. She was given a Champion medal to take home. The weather gods were not kind to us Saturday night with heavy rains eventually

2 MAY May 3 General Meeting We ll elect new officers May 8 Mothers Day May 17 Board Meeting May Spring Fling May 30 Memorial Day JUNE June 9-12 FWSA Convention- Arizona June 19 Fathers Day June 24 River Cruise & Installation of Officers turning to snow, leaving about 2 inches of new, wet stuff on Reynolds Run for Skiyente s Memorial Cup GS Race. Despite the work done by the course crew, the course was very sketchy, changing from a good, solid surface at the top of the course to a very soft, mushy surface at the bottom. We had a total of forty racers start with 5 that did not finish and 3 falling after the finish line and sliding into fencing! Our own Barbie Pressentin was injured on the course, but is now recuperating well from a dislocated shoulder. It was snowing at the top of the course the whole time, with a mix of snow and rain at the bottom. Course referees agreed to call the second run and only have a one-run competition, due to unsafe conditions. GS Awards were given out at the Outback Lodge with the help of family members of the Memorial Cup Honorees. Honorees were: Cameron Bangs, King McGuire, Henry Bendinelli, Dale Crockatt, Charlie Kies, Dick Pooley, Kelsey Hewitt and Bill Johnson. Family members of Kelsey and Bill were in attendance. The Memorial Cup plaque was awarded to Mike Smith with a time of 1:18.6 fastest time of the day. Mike s name will be engraved on the plaque along with our honorees. The plaque will remain in our showcase at the Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum. Mike took home a Champion medal for his own showcase. We want to thank the Mt. Hood Academy racers who foreran both days races. They were exceptionally fast, with both the 13-year-old boy AND girl beating most of the times put forth by the Masters! We at the bottom of the course loved pointing out that many of the racers were chicked by a 13-year-old girl! They loved it!! Sandi Shaub SUMMER Summer Function will be in July or August Details to follow Highway Clean-up After the snow melts Mike Smith Memorial Cup Winner DB Johnson-Cooper, wearing Bill Johnson's Gold Medal with Amanda Moran and Diane Hicks 2

4 Bill Johnson was cut from a different cloth, American ski great Phil Mahre said in a statement. Billy was a fighter and went about things his way. That toughness allowed him to reach heights in the skiing world that few will ever accomplish. Bill Johnson Memorial Dog Leg to Bill s Gold On March 19, Bill Johnson was honored posthumously when Mt Hood Skibowl renamed the Dog Leg run to Bill s Gold. Bill Johnson was an American World Cup alpine ski racer. He was the first American male to win an Olympic gold medal in alpine skiing, winning the downhill at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. And, he was a Mt Hood boy. Bill Johnson's run to victory After the speeches by important people in Bill Johnson s life, Kirk Hanna, owner and operator of Mt Hood Skibowl and Petr Kakes, who runs many Skibowl operations, unveiled the new Bill s Gold ski run sign. Petr knew Bill Johnson and raced against him many times representing another country. Bill s mom D.B.Johnson-Cooper attended the celebration of her son s life. The Dog Leg run has long been known as a training hill and a fine racing hill. Good-bye Dog Leg, Hello Bill s Gold in honor of our own Bill Johnson. 4

5 Petr Kakes and Kirk Hanna have unveiled the new Bill s Gold sign. Bill s mother D.B.Johnson-Cooper is on the left. The crowd honoring Bill Johnson Thank you Jeannie Hummel for the pictures and in person commentary. Because she raced before the dedication in the Schnee Vogeli Ski Club race, Jeannie was the last Skiyente to ski down Dog Leg. 8 The age of a woman doesn't mean a thing. The best tunes are played on the oldest fiddles. Ralph Waldo Emerson Our 2016 King Winter On February 20 we crowned Roger and Carol Smith 2016 King Winter. This is why. Roger and Carol Smith have been long time members of the community and married over 60 years. Now turning 82 years old, they have had a cabin in Govy since their twenties! They purchased cabin zero the very cabin Henry Steiner and his sons, John and Fred, lived in while building all the beautiful log homes on Mt Hood. They have flipped pancakes, served breakfast at Cascade Ski Lodge, been gate keeps, raced, waxed skis and carried skis, served drinks, given hugs and let s not forget Can-a-Beer raced many times. They have supported Timberline lodge as Friends of Timberline for ages! They raised three ski racers and racing grandchildren plus likely fed just about every kiddo on the hill. Now as they are getting up in years and remodeling the cabin for further enjoyment, they just keep loving our Mt. Hood ski community.
