August 2016 NEWSLETTER Charter # 2786 Inside This Issue: President s Message July Meeting President's Message Hello Fellow Ute RC Modelers, July Egg Drop Upcoming Ute RC Events This Summer has been racing by and soon we will be into Fall. There are still many great flying days left in the season, so don't start hiding away in the shop quite yet. We had a great turnout at the Eat'n Fly last Saturday and enjoyed some of the nicest flying weather I've ever seen at the club field. We enjoyed roasted hot dogs, camaraderie, and many flights in the sunny and calm sky. The club voted to continue the lease for our private field despite the cost increase. We learned that with 60 days notice we can terminate the lease, so that allows us an "out" should the cost of the field ever outweigh its value to the club. For the time being, I see our club field as being incredibly valuable and an important asset to retain. It gives us a nearby place to fly that is access controlled and has many amenities like the shed with charging power, shade canopy, outhouse, flight line fence, engine starting tables, and plenty of breathing room for those sweaty-palmed maiden flights. You don't have to ask around much or read many articles to know that good flying sites like this are quickly disappearing and many clubs disband as a result of losing their field. Time will tell whether the new modelport could serve as a viable home base for us, and in the meantime, we have a proven place to fly. Thank you all for your understanding and support as we dealt with the unexpected changes to the lease terms. The search is still on for a suitable float fly venue due to the low water and health concerns at Utah Lake and Lincoln Beach this time around. So far, Echo Reservoir is looking like the most plausible candidate. Please let me or another officer know if you have a suggestion for where we can fly off the water next month. As always, Ed Stimpson has been on hand to photograph our many club activities, including our recent Eat'n Fly, the Swizzle Stick build event, night fly, and club meetings. Please make sure you take a look at the results of his many hours spent photographing and post-processing these images. Visit the photo sub-forum by visiting the club website ( clicking on "Forums" at the top, then "Photos" under "Clubhouse". (Or just click here: YOU can also post photos here! All you need is a website account. If you don't have an account or have trouble logging in, please let me know and I'll help you get logged in. We also have a very active page on Facebook: LINK Keep in mind though, that many of our club members are not using Facebook, so you may want to post important photos in both places. I hope you continue to enjoy the nice warm weather and get many happy flights in! - Aaron Greer Ute RC Assn August

July Meeting Safety Officer, Steve Wilson, shows bandages that Paul shows the accurately shaped airfoil templates will be stored in the shed at the field. These can be made of plastic-backed metal counter top laminate, used to stop the bleeding from prop injuries or but they could be made of sheet aluminum just as other serious accidents rather than as first aide for well. Each has exact positioning marks and holes other incidents. to "nail" it to the foam with unused snap rivets. He emphasized that the templates must have very smooth edges so the cutting wire does not snag on the template as the foam is cut to an airfoil shape. Ute RC Assn August

In this and subsequent images, Paul Jones gives a thorough demonstration of how to cut rigid foam with a hot wire to create foam-core wings. Here he is showing the cutting wire in a frame powered by a 120V AC variable transformer set at about 30V to give the right wire temperature. The supports for the wire are angled out so that they can be pushed out farther to tighten the wire as needed. Paul shows the results - a perfect wing core. Leading and trailing edges will be added and both top and bottom will be sheeted with thin balsa. The piece of foam left over is ideal for holding the sheeting against the curved foam core while the glue dries. Full coverage of this demo is available on the website in photos. Ute RC Assn August

Show & Tell Gary Stevenson's Mako Sea Plane produced by West Michigan Park Flyers. Gerhard Roos' 52" Pterodactyl from PteroWorks. Doug Dorton brought his new Horizon Hobby Blade Glimpse FPV RTF quad to show its unique features. The video image from the quad camera is sent via WiFi to an Apple or Android smart phone which can be mounted on a bracket on his Spektrum Tx. This provides a limited range FPV experience without the additional FPV Tx & Rx normally required. Ute RC Assn August

July Egg Drop Tom Winter's Grandson, Jonathan, helps Evan Higginsen paint the target circle on the surface of the field. Tom Winter and his Grandson, Jonathan, prep Tom's Slow Stick for the Egg Drop. The egg goes in the cup and is popped out by pulling negative G's in a dive away from the falling egg - if all goes well. ` Evan Higginsen's plane, powered by an OS 91 4-stroke, makes a good landing. Steve Wilson makes an equally good landing with his Multiplex Fun Cub. Ute RC Assn August

Keith Hiatt, Rick Marshall, Evan Higginsen, Steve With Tom Winter's help, Jonathan climbs his Wilson, and Tom Winter's Grandson, Jonathan, roll Grandfather's Slow Stick out with a load, gets into streamers, marked with their contest numbers, position, and then dives to pop the egg out of the around the eggs they will drop in the contest. cup. He pulls the plane up too soon and the egg bounces harmlessly off the right wing. Rick Marshall's SIG LT-40, converted to electric with an E-Flite 46 outrunner powered by a pair of 4-cell 4000mAH batteries, takes to the air, makes an egg bombing run, and returns. Dave Moore takes off with his Great Planes Rapture, lines up on the target, pitches the egg out of the cup, avoids the falling egg, and returns to the field. Ute RC Assn August

` Dave Moore's sweet little E-Flite Ultimate biplane Contest winners left to right: Jonathan - 3rd, Rick is easy and fun to fly. Marshall - 2nd, and Dave Moore - 1st. Upcoming Ute RC Events September 8 th 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Regular Club Meeting L. Clark Cushing Heritage Center The address is 10 East 6150 South Murray September 10 th 9 a.m. Float Fly Our traditional float fly will be tons of fun. Join us at Echo Reservoir for a morning of camaraderie and pot luck lunch afterwards. Please remember to support our friends at West Valley Hobbies. Over the years West Valley has been a strong supporter of the Utes with prize donations and discounts for club members. Drop by and return the favor. Ute RC Assn August
