6 PRESIDENT S REPORT Another year has passed and our club has had a safe and enjoyable season with many great results during various carnivals. During the season, our 4 patrol groups totalling 51 volunteers averaged 59 hours per person being a combined effort of close to 3000 hours. We were fortunate enough to have several members complete either their SRC award or obtain their Bronze Medallion. These achievements were very beneficial in being able to assist with carnivals and patrols. Several members also gained their IRB crewies and drivers that is invaluable to the club. Various members also assisted by officialling at various events throughout the year. As all are aware, our clubs cannot survive or function without our members volunteering their time. Sadly we lost Bob Holden recently. Bob was an enormous part of the club and Surf Life Saving in general. Known and loved by all he will be missed, however never forgotten. Mr Mark Fife, president of SLS Queensland attended our club dinner with his wife Marcia and presented Brett and Craig Holden with a noddy hat displaying Bob s State life membership number. Jetski patrols continued from the club this season and I would like to thank those members who volunteered their time to keep our waters safe and the equipment maintained, Trevor Harvey, John Rizzo and Marty Cole. We do have an issue that has arisen during safe and correct operation of the jetski in close proximity to the beach that has resulted in a fine against one of our operators. This is due to a go slow requirement affecting our beach area extending 300m offshore during turtle season. As this is a hindrance to patrols and training, the matter is being pursued with the assistance of Surf Life Saving Wide Bay approaching council and relevant government departments. We have an IRB on order and a number of new boards on the way. Our ATV is next in line for replacement due to the harsh conditions it faces. It has lasted quite well though in comparison to previous equipment. No large changes with the clubhouse at this point in time, however with the assistance of Dave Merefield and John Poulson, plans and specifications are being prepared for our planned extension of the storage area of the clubhouse to enable equipment to be moved out of the access paths within the garage area. This no doubt will be a very expensive project and not occur overnight. Funding will be sourced after quotations for the project can be obtained. Thanks to Jason Everingham for managing the gear and equipment during the year. Thanks to Sharon Joiner and Shirley Holden for the operation of the canteen, Michelle Kennedy as registrar and Julia Rizzo for holding first aid officer s position. We wish Julia well with her studies and congratulate her for being awarded the Nearly Wills Scholarship. John Rizzo was also awarded RWC operator of the year and Brandan Harvey for WBC Branch Young Life Saver of the Year. Our members were very successful in the branch outside of competition as well. During the season, the club received a number of grants and funds, for which we are extremely grateful. These have been sourced with the assistance of Shirley Holden, Craig Holden, Marie Harvey and the Page 5

7 representatives at SLSQ to process the requests. We will continue to source more suitable and available throughout the year. Alternate fundraising ideas were trialled during the season that included a very successful cent sale. Thanks must go to Peta Bell who has taken up the position and handled this event in conjunction with Ruth Royan. Julia Rizzo stepped down from the position to attend university. The combined efforts of Julia and Peta are very much appreciated. I wish to acknowledge and thank our sponsors and supporters for their assistance in making our season successful and our beach safe for another season of lifesaving. They are: Oceanic Steel & Oceanic Labour Resources Tyrian Masonic Lodge No. 27 (Bundaberg) Bundaberg Physiotherapy Centre & Sports Injury Clinic Peter Ahern Charm City Carpet Care and Pest Control JRZ Homes Duffy s City Buses Strata Services Queensland We received several more minor donations from various individuals and businesses, these are all greatly appreciated. Thank you also must go out to Shirley Holden our Treasurer, for ensuring our club is financial and Marie Harvey for the hours spent handling SLSQ s and correspondence as well as meeting minutes. Our Junior Activities program continued to run well throughout the year under the management of Ruth Royan. We were fortunate to have a stable group of Age Managers and Instructors who in most cases continued on from the previous year and I do hope to see them return again this year to continue the good work with our youth members. We had many great results as a club and with individual members throughout the season at many events. From Silver and Bronze medals at Queensland and Aussie Pool Rescue events, Winner of the overall handicapped Point Score at North Aussies, U10 male winner of the Kozii Ironman Challenge, Runner Up in the Junior Branch U8-10 Pointscore and Overall Masters Pointscore winner at Senior Branch. The club again won Overall Pointscore at Branch Pool Rescue and also achieved strong placings and several Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at Qld Boardriding Championships, Qld Youth and Masters Surf Life Saving Championships including beach events and a bronze medal at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. A great job by all who competed as well those who achieved medal placings. Our thanks to Craig Holden for all of his coaching throughout the year, also for the assistance provided by those assistant coaches and parents. Craig and his team were extremely successful with the Australian campaign attending the world championships during the season. Craig has also been selected as Coach for the Australian World Team. His training of all of our kids has continued to improve their abilities and inspired them to continue. Our attending numbers again grew at Junior and Senior WBC Branch Championships. We also had a number of competitors at the Queensland Youth and Masters Surf Lifesaving Championships and Australian Youth and Masters Surf Lifesaving Championships. We had varied competitive results and all involved enjoyed the Page 6

8 carnivals. Thanks again to Oceanic Steel for the teamwear and Strata Services Queensland for club specific backpacks. Another great success was the inaugural Seahorse Program held as a combined effort with Moore Park SLSC and Bundaberg SLSC. This was not only great for some special needs kids in our region, it confirmed the ability for all clubs in our area to work together. We were fortunate with the assistance we were provided by the members of Noosa who came up to help us and we remain in regular contact with them. The program would not have been the success it was without those who volunteered their time. We literally could not have run the program without everyone s participation. Everyone appeared to enjoy the program from participants to helpers. Our next program will fall around the time we start our new season, and hope that those who helped previously are willing again and possibly more so that we can expand the numbers to cater for more children. There have been many more members and volunteers who have contributed in various ways throughout the season to ensure our club continues to hum along and for that I express my thanks to every one of them. In closing, my thanks to the executive members and office bearers of the club for their efforts throughout the season, to my wife Alina for organising the Annual Dinner and Craig Holden for the countless hours put into the training of our members. Also I must thank all patrolling members and parents who made the year as successful as it was. I look forward to seeing everyone at the start of the new season. 9 CLUB CAPTAIN S REPORT The patrol season was a difficult season due to low patrol member numbers and a number of patrol breaches as a result. Members performed a combined total of hours with an average of hours per member, which is an increase of more than 11 hours on average per member over the average last year, showing the strain on our patrolling members. Two years ago the average was at 45 hours per member, and 10 years ago in the season the average was only 36.5 hours per member. This really demonstrates the increasing pressure on our members. As a result of this increasing pressure, this year we had 4 patrolling members achieving 100+ hours on the beach, Tarryn and Caitlin Crozier, myself and John Rizzo. Five members achieved SLSQ service awards for 100+ hours on patrol, Tarryn and Caitlin Crozier, myself, John Rizzo and Martin Cole who performed a massive hours when combined with his support operations jetski patrols at the Sunshine Coast and Elliott Heads. Saturday morning patrols continued to be absent from the patrol agreement this season as per last season as without enough patrol members we cannot fulfil additional hours to the roster. This season I also managed to negotiate some 5pm finishes rather than 6pm to try and minimise fatigue on the members. As always the battle between the expectations of SLSQ in regards to patrol hours and the impact on a dwindling number of patrol groups and members continues. I truly believe that if this situation is not addressed the numbers will continue to dwindle which will present challenges for SLSQ in the future. RWC patrols continued this season in the December and Easter school holidays. Thanks to all that performed these jetski patrols, which included some of our members and some from other Clubs. Thanks again to Jason Everingham who was the Club s Gear and Equipment Officer this season for his work in ensuring all of our gear was in good order this season. Thanks also to Martin Cole for his work as CTO. Congratulations to Scott Collins and Katie Stephenson who were named Male and Female Patrol Members of the Year respectively. Scott and Kate both performed a high number of patrol hours this year as well as participating in extra activities to the benefit of the Club. Once again, this Award was very hard to decide as there are many other members equally as deserving who have done a great job this year and it is always hard to choose just one or two members for these Awards. Thank you to all patrolling members, without you there is no club. Congratulations to all of the new Bronze and SRC members, to the canteen volunteers, particularly Sharon, Shirley, Michelle and others who have assisted in feeding us this year at nippers and at other events throughout the season. As always it is hard to thank everyone individually as we all pull together and do many and varied jobs throughout the season to keep the Club running. However, I would particularly like to mention the work of Bob Holden who we sadly lost this year and will be sadly missed by all that knew him. His shoes around the clubhouse will be hard to fill. As always I look forward to another season as your Club Captain if you ll have me and I will continue to endeavour to do the best I can for our club and patrolling members. See you on the beach in September! TREVOR HARVEY Club Captain Page 8

12 CHIEF TRAINING OFFICER REPORT The season kicked off with a school holidays Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificate course over the September school holidays. The battle with school representative sport strung this over two weeks but where else would I rather spend half my annual leave? The bid to quarantine Sunday mornings for U14s from awards training I don t think was wise, especially when several small squads were still required over weekends and week nights to get lifesavers and water safety on the beach. Special thanks to Rick Wootton for juggling that second course with me. Inflatable Rescue Boat crew courses remained challenging to entice learners, but after a false start it was quality over quantity which saw Laure Stephenson gain is crew award in January, and Trevor Harvey his Assessor IRB award. As a small club with long hours of not much happening on patrols, we flipped the skills maintenance process from the usual one session to an on-the-job/patrol activity, intended to be split between wet and dry days. That put a good deal of responsibility in the hands of lifesavers, trainers and assessors to be organised and I hoped with extra time thorough in moving beyond competent to proficiency. What s the only lifesaving education many expose themselves too had hiccups - foul weather and low tides; members who don t patrol, or don t patrol per the roster; the disconnect that unless an assessment activity is recorded, it didn t happen; if the record isn t available by December for skills maintenance, it s too late. Thanks to those who supported the training on offer at our club to make you better lifesavers and humans, and to my fellow trainers and assessors who made it happen. 21 JUNIOR ACTIVITIES OFFICER REPORT The season is my fourth year with the club, this season I have been appointed to the role of Junior Activities Coordinator, prior to this I was a Age Managers in the Sharkies groups and have watched those Sharkies grow and start completing at club level. This Season we started with 2 open days 18 th and 25 th September and pool proficiency where we had new families engaging with the club and taking on roles within the club. It was good to see parents taking advantage of the opportunities at our club and becoming active members and bringing together that family feel that make Club Elliott the friendly club. We also saw a number of new families competing for the first time in the seasons at a senior and junior level. Club Numbers hit an all-time high with a total of 96 junior members. The season has fly by and we continued our focus on teaching and learning whilst at the same time providing extra opportunities for all Senior and junior members to engagement in team and induvial events at local carnivals and within the club as well as a large number of parents taking up the opportunity to gain their SRC and become accredited Carnival Officials. Junior Points Carnivals: (U8-U15) Moore Park SLSC Sun 6 th November condition on the day where normal messy Moore Park surf, with our nippers coming away excited with strong results and ready for the next carnival. Bundaberg SLSC Sun 20 th November with the day ending in big surf, our nippers come away performing well with the uneasy conditions. Elliott Heads SLSC- 4 th December a great turn out with good weather conditions and great feedback from all participating clubs members. Christmas Break-up the following weekend 11 th December with a sausage sizzle and fun and games. A large number of Nippers attended the Ripper Nipper Camp hosted again at the Bundaberg SLSC on January 12 th over the vacation period picking up pointers to get the most out of training and developing their skills to a higher level. February 4 th and 5 th The WBC Branch Junior Championships were held this year at Yeppoon SLSC. EHSLSC took away the largest team ever to compete at a WBC Branch event 45 nippers. Our juniors really carved up at the Championships with every U8-U15 nipper bringing home a medal along with the senior nippers also bringing home a number of medals. Page 20

22 The Queensland Youth State Championships were held in Hervey Bay from th February with 20 nippers and cadets from U11s to U15s representing Elliott Heads. Our kids performed really well with some great individual results. Elliott Heads also has achieved some great results with 24 members competing in Pool Rescue this season at Yeppoon, winning the Branch Pool Rescue 2017 WBC Branch Pool Rescue shield. We currently have members training to go to the Gold Coast for State Pool Recues on July 22 nd and 23. Our nippers have also performed well at some of the peripheral carnivals this season including the U11-U17 carnival at Agnes Water with 15 competitors from the U11-U15 age groups, and the North vs South Carnival at Agnes Water with 15 of our nippers and cadets in the South team. 25 SURF SPORTS RESULTS The 2016/17 surf life saving season was another very successful one for the Elliott Heads Surf Life Saving Club proving once again that you don t have to be a large club with plenty of money and resources in order to be successful on the State and National stage. From a whole of club perspective, some of the highlights this season included: Winning the WBC Branch Champion Club Handicapped Pointscore at the 2016 WBC Branch Annual Dinner; Winning the WBC Branch Pool Rescue Championships Overall Pointscore for the second consecutive year; Winning the WBC Branch Masters Championships Overall Pointscore for the first time in the Club s history; Placing third in the Queensland Board Riding Championship Handicapped Pointscore; Craig Holden being named as the Assistant Coach of the Australian Youth Lifesaving Team that were crowned World Champions at the 2016 World Lifesaving Championships in The Netherlands (National Youth Teams); Craig Holden being named as the Head Coach of the Australian Pathways Lifesaving Team to win the 2017 Sanyo International Lifesaving Cup in Japan; A team of 44 junior surf life savers competing at the WBC Branch Junior Surf Life Saving Championships in Yeppoon; A team of 14 surf life savers competing at the WBC Branch Senior & Masters Life Saving Championships in Hervey Bay; A combined team of 38 surf life savers competing at the WBC Branch Pool Rescue Championship events 24 juniors and 14 seniors/masters; A team of 22 junior surf life savers competing at the Queensland Youth Surf Life Saving Championships at Hervey Bay; Australian Championship medallists: o o 2016 Australian Pool Rescue Championships Stuart Hogben 2 nd Years Male 100m Manikin Tow with Fins Kristine Holden 2 nd Years Female 200m Swim with Obstacles; 2 nd Years Female 100m Manikin Tow with Fins; 3 rd Years Female 50m Manikin Carry with Fins Craig Holden, Stuart Hogben, Ian Winning & Jason Everingham 3 rd 120+ Years Mens 4 x 50m Obstacle Relay 2017 Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships Craig Holden, Stuart Hogben & Scott Collins 3 rd 130 Years Mens Board Relay Queensland Championship medallists: o o o o Queensland Pool Rescue Championships Nicholas Winning & Samuel Klotz 2 nd Under 11 Male 10m Line Throw Relay Stuart Hogben 3 rd Years Male 200m Swim with Obstacles Queensland Board Riding Championships Ryan Bennett 1 st Years Male Malibu Board Riding; 2 nd Years Male Short Board Queensland Endurance Championships Stuart Hogben 3 rd Years Male 2km Ocean Swim; 3 rd Years Male 4km Board Paddle Queensland Surf Lifesaving Championships Ryan Bennett 1 st Years Male Rescue Tube Race; 2 nd Years ironman; 3 rd Years Male Board Race; 3 rd Years Male Surf Race Page 24

39 FUNDRAISING REPORT Julia Rizzo began the season as the Fundraising Coordinator before leaving to commence her university studies at which time I took over the role. Julia started the year with a Cadbury Chocolate fundraiser which was successful with all chocolates eventually being sold and an estimated profit for $1,600. The Annual Surf Safe Appeal was run again in 2016 with the dates being altered to be within the nipper season unlike last season. Riverfeast ran a Halloween event on the Friday night where the club was able to raise quite a lot of money from this event (approximately $900 if my memory serves). I would like to organise something like this again to coincide with a special event either at Riverfeast or possibly Lana s Markets. The Annual Ham Wheel was once again conducted at the clubhouse just before Christmas and was as successful as it has been in previous years. An offer was made by club members, the Klotz family, to do a Macadamia Nut fundraiser. This was done after the end of the nipper season via and Facebook and was not hugely successful however we did still make approximately $120 for the club. It was decided to try something different this year to bring funds in from outside of the club and together with Ruth Royan, JAC, we organised a cent sale at the Brothers Sports Club who were very generous in allowing us the room at no cost as well as donating prizes. We also obtained many and varied donations from local businesses to use as prizes. After all was said and done we made approximately $2,300. I believe that by changing a few things we could improve on this profit. If we were to do this again I would ask for donations from members earlier in the season, hold the cent sale earlier in the year, maybe around March, and improve the advertising so that more people were aware it was being held. Thanks must go to those members and nippers that helped out on the day to sell tickets, prepare morning tea, give out prizes etc. I am currently running a pie drive out of season via and Facebook with the majority of orders being submitted by our more active members. It is estimated that the club will make about $240 from the pie drive. Sunday breakfasts were conducted last year in the off season and while not as successful as the previous year was still worthwhile. Shirley has once again taken the lead and we have commenced breakfasts again within the last two weeks and so far have not had a great number of customers. We may need to reconsider holding these breakfasts if business does not pick up. Big thanks must go to Shirley for organising these breakfasts. Thanks again to Shirley and to Sharon Joiner for the fantastic work they do in our canteen each and every Sunday during the nipper season. While we do not aim to profit from the canteen, the small amount of funds raised do contribute back to the club. Dean has been in contact with someone from Bunnings in regards to hosting another sausage sizzle as these have been successful in the past, however, we do not yet have a confirmed date. We have had a few other fundraising opportunities presented to us just recently which we have expressed interest in and are currently evaluating. PETA BELL Fundraising Coordinator Page 38
