President s Corner: Reflections and thoughts for Holidays and for 2016! In the December newsletter, I dwelled upon our club accomplishments in I wasn't expecting to write again in However, here are a few of my thoughts. Our club has prided ourselves on being the friendly flyers and we are very welcoming to new potential pilots. We offer one of the highest quality flying experiences available at a very reasonable price point. Our membership numbers have risen to a comfortable level. I think this trend could continue, as the city is growing up around our airfield. Let's continue with the Crosswinds spirit in I hope all of you are able to enjoy the holiday season with your families. Don't forget our Chili Fly at the airfield on Friday January 1st 2016 from 10AMish to 2PMish. It's our typical Pot Luck arrangement. We'll have the generator running if you need electricity for a crock pot. As always, bring something to fly. We sometimes have a lot of fun trying to fly in challenging conditions. But it could also be a perfect day for flying. We do live in Colorado. Happy Holidays, Safe Travels and Safe Flying. Vice President s Input: Building Tip: Thinking about designing your own plane? Here are some Rules of Thumb for plane design: The ratio of the wing span to wing root chord should be 5 or 6: 1

2 Example: If the wing root cord is 6" then the entire wing span should be 30" - 36" long. Note: The wing root chord is that portion of the wing that attaches to the fuselage, measured from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the wing. The wing thickness should be 12% to 14% of the wing root chord: Example: If the wing root chord is 6" then the widest part of the wing should be 3/4" thick. Note: Foam profile planes do not follow this rule of thumb but still fly. The aileron surface area should be 10% - 12% of half of the wing surface: Example: If half a wing is 6" x 18" then the wing surface is 108 sq inches. The aileron shape should equal square inches of surface area. The fuselage length should be 70% - 75% of the wing span: Example: If the wing is 36" long, then the fuselage should be 25" - 27" long. The distance from the leading edge of the wing to the back of the prop should be 15% of the wingspan: Example: If the wingspan is 36" then the distance from the back of the prop to the leading edge of the wing should be 5.4" The leading edge of the wing to the stabilizer should be 3 times the wing root chord: Example: If the wing chord is 6" then leading edge of the wing to the stabilizer should be 18" The horizontal stabilizer should be 25% of the wing area: Example: If the wing is a rectangle, 36"L x 6"W, it has a wing area of 216 sq inches. 25% of 216 = 54 sq inches. The shape of your horizontal stabilizer should equal 54 sq inches. The elevator (attached to the horizontal stabilizer) should be 25% of the horizontal stabilizer surface area: Example: If the Horizontal Stabilizer is 54 sq inches then the elevator surface area should equal 13.5 sq inches. The vertical stabilizer should be 10% of the wing area: Example: If the wing is a rectangular 36" x 6" shape it has a surface area of 216 sq inches. 10% of 216 = 21.6 sq inches. The shape of your horizontal stabilizer should equal 21.6 sq inches of surface. The rudder (attached to the vertical stabilizer) should be 25% of the vertical stabilizer surface area: Example: If the vertical stabilizer is 21.6 sq inches then the rudder surface area should equal 5.4 sq inches. The plane should balance at 25% - 33% of the wing root chord: Example: If the wing root chord is 6" from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the wing then the Center of Gravity (COG) should be located 1.5" - 2" from the leading edge of the wing. 3 The meeting was called to order promptly at 6:30 PM by President Bob Moore and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. New member, Jim Walker, was introduced and we went around the room and everyone introduced themselves. The minutes of the October 14 general membership meeting were approved as they appeared in the newsletter. Motion to approve by Dave Teich. Second by John Kleber. Bob Moore mentioned that the road into the flying has been graded. He thanked Robert and Tyler Rowland for doing the job at a very reasonable cost. Bob also reminded the members of the Chili Fly Pot Luck which is an annual event at the flying field January 1. More about this event will be forthcoming in future correspondence. Mike Noll reported the club currently has two accounts with First Bank in Castle Rock. The balance in the checking account is $XXX and the balance in the Lease Security Deposit account is $XXX. Income for the month included $ in dues and initiation fees from three new members- -Levy, Schader and Walker. Expenses included $21.04 for nametags, $ to Robert Rowland for grading the road and $19.69 to reimburse Bill Woodward for trash bags. Frank Kaylor announced the annual Christmas Party for members and significant others will take place Tuesday, December 15 at the Heritage Eagle Bend Clubhouse. Cash bar will be open at 6:30 PM with dinner to follow. We will be able to order from the menu and separate checks will be issued. Heritage Eagle Bend Club is located near the intersection of Gartrel Road and Aurora Parkway. RSVP to Frank prior to December 5. Under the topic of Safety, there was a discussion regarding the location of the closest medical facility to the flying field. There is a significant difference in cost of service between a urgent care facility and a hospital emergency room. It was concluded that directions to both the closest urgent care facility and hospital should be posted at the flying field and in the newsletter. Bob Moore reviewed the survey results regarding the pilot stations at the flying field. He outlined a schedule for studying any changes to the existing pilot station configuration. Any proposed changes should be submitted to Bob by January 1 and will be presented to the membership at the February general membership meeting. Proposals will 3 also be sent out via to the entire membership for review and comment. Voting on any changes will take place after that. Dennis Kordes mentioned that Neil McCumber donated a bundle of Monocote to the club. There were several whole rolls plus several partial rolls in the bundle. Norm Vanderslice ended up with the bundle and if anyone needs a partial roll for patching or whatever, they should contact Norm. No further business being presented, the meeting adjourned at 6:55 PM. Program: Following the business meeting, Randy Shaffer, dressed in authentic WWI German flyer's dress uniform complete with Blue Max and Flying Cross, told the group much about Manfred von Richthofen (also known as the Red Baron) who was the most successful fighter pilot of World War I. Randy also brought in a scale model of the Fokker DR1 triplane designed by Anthony Fokker specifically for Richthofen and told us about its unique flying characteristics. Submitted by Mike Noll Secretary/Treasurer Safety Officer: SAFETY Winter has once again arrived, and with it, a few special considerations. Strings dangling from your hoodie, scarfs, and hats are all "prop bait". Snug clothing with no loose stuff is essential. Sunny days melts the snow and clears the runway for our planes! Remember, It is likely to freeze at night, creating ice and slippery footing. Be extra careful operating, a slip, trip or fall, may do more than bruise your tail bone. The cold air from the slip stream of the prop can numb fingers very quickly, especially, if a little glow or gas is on them. A consideration before you adjust a needle valve, make sure you can feel your fingers!

4 With freeze and thaw, drifty snow, consider your drive into the lot. It is not much fun to get stuck. And if you shovel snow, remember it is an activity that's physically demanding. Take your time. Twisted backs and hard beating hearts take the fun out of flying. Of course, the Red Baron was famous for flying his triplane and Randy did not disappoint with his fine model of the famous airframe. Lastly, on those bright, sunny, snow covered days, sunglasses might help take some strain of the eyes. Enjoy and fly safe. Meeting Programming Website: Where to get it! You Missed It: At our November 2015 Meeting Dr. Randy Shaffer presented a very interesting program on WW I and Baron Manfred von Richtofen. Randy also shared with us some flying tips in the form of a hand out he prepared which could be very useful for anyone looking to pilot a WW I aircraft. Our members were truly enthralled and we all thank Randy for this excellent presentation. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May April 1918), also widely known as the Red Baron, was a German fighter pilot with the Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) during thefirst World War. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air 4

5 combat victories. Originally a cavalryman, Richthofen transferred to the Air Service in 1915, becoming one of the first members of Jasta 2 in He quickly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot, and during 1917 became leader ofjasta 11 and then the larger unit Jagdgeschwader 1 (better known as the "Flying Circus"). By 1918, he was regarded as a national hero in Germany, and widely respected even by his enemies. Richthofen was shot down and killed near Amiens on 21 April There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains perhaps the most widely known fighter pilot of all time, and has been the subject of many books, films and other media.
