Presidents Welcome Welcome to Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club s Junior Activities (Nippers) programme for On behalf of the Management of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, I would like to welcome our returning and new junior members together with your families to the Nipper season. Our Club has always held the junior programme in the highest regard and is proud of our results in educating our junior members in surf safety and awareness together with fostering future patrolling Life Savers and Surf Life Saving competitors. We are most fortunate this year to have yet again a highly motivated Junior Activities Committee led by Sam Smith who not only enjoys the full support of her committee, but the Club s Management Committee and membership base. I would encourage you all to make yourself known, to Sam and her committee, Anthony Fox, Steve Tindal, Peter Lethbridge, Sam Anderssen, Jo Carroll-Thompson and Lyndon Forlonge, so as you might engage yourself in the programme. In that regard there are a variety of roles in which we can all help and you will find the junior activities group a most welcoming and fun lot at the morning set up, BBQ s, Water Safety and wash down sessions. So can I again welcome you all, and encourage you all to engage with Age Managers, Water Safety Supervisor, Coaches, Team Managers and BBQ Co-ordinator, so that our Nippers and youth can have a rewarding, fun, productive and safe Nipper Season. Yours in Life Saving Ross Fisher President 2

JAC Directors Welcome On behalf of the Junior Activities Committee (JAC), I would like to welcome all returning and new families to the 2016/2017 Nippers season. The newly elected committee have been hard at work and we are very excited about the season ahead. With a great team of Age Managers and assistants and coaching regime, we will be working to ensure all members have the best opportunities available to them. The Nippers program is designed to introduce children aged between 5-14 to Surf Lifesaving. It is a fun outdoors activity that grows a child s confidence, and teaches valuable surf awareness skills. Our aim is to provide a safe, family-friendly and fun environment for our Nippers. I believe that all kids living on the coast should be equipped with the best skills and knowledge for safe use of our Australian beaches. Our Nippers today are the next generation of Surf Lifesavers. The Nippers Sunday s are a great way for all family members to get involved in Surf Lifesaving. Each Sunday is a huge logistical undertaking and it is imperative for the smooth running and safety of our children that ALL families contribute in some way. There are many ways you can contribute from the set up and pack up of equipment and BBQ assistance, to enrolling in a program to become an Official, Age Manager or Water Safety Officer. If you would like more information on any of these opportunities, please nippers@noosasurfclub.com.au. The Club will happily provide you with support and assistance in completing these courses as well as the flexibility to work around your available hours. Eight years ago when I enrolled my eldest son in the Nippers program, I did not expect one day I would be the Director. I knew straight away that I wanted to assist in some way and enrolled in a Water Safety program. The skills and fitness that I gained through completing my Surf Rescue Certificate has been extremely rewarding and has introduced me to the Surf Club community. I would like to formally acknowledge the Management Committee for their support. There are many men and women who volunteer their time and work tirelessly in the background to make sure the Noosa Nippers program continues well into the future. Please take the time to read this booklet thoroughly as it is a wonderful source of information for the 2015/16 season. I would also like to thank all of you for your support of me as Director. I feel very privileged to hold the position and look forward to the season ahead. Sam Smith JAC Director 3

It is also expected that parents get involved in the running of Nippers each week. Tasks such as Age Group Managers and assistants, water safety officers, carnival officials and beach set up/pack down are all vital for the program to run at its full potential. Volunteers are also needed to assist with the coordination of and participation in the Sunday Nipper BBQ and fundraising events (which are a great social way to be involved with other nipper parents). It is a club requirement when a Nipper competes at carnivals that a parent assists with a role relevant to the event. 6

WATER SAFETY OFFICERS/COORDINATOR Water safety officers mainly spend their time in the water on Nipper Sundays and carnivals either on rescue boards, swimming with tubes/fins or being markers and monitors for the wade and swimming races. A water safety course (such as Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion) is required to be completed to become a Water Safety officer. Please register your interest for attending a course with either JAC admin nippers@noosasurfclub.com.au or Lifesaving admin lifesaving@noosasurfclub.com.au BEACH SET UP/BBQ CREW Each Sunday morning and for all carnivals we need a great crew to be responsible for the set up and pack down of equipment including tents and flags on the beach and the weekly BBQ. Each week a different age group is rostered to be responsible for BBQ duties and each age group will usually be rostered 2 or 3 times throughout the season. OFFICIAL An official role is either judging, marshaling competitors, presenting medals, recording results or starting races. An officials Level 1 course needs to be completed prior to acting as an official. Please register your interest for attending a course with JAC admin: nippers@noosasurfclub.com.au It is a requirement of both the Club and Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) that ALL members (including parent Associate Members) over the age of 18 7

directly involved with junior activities hold a Blue Card (Police Check). Such parents, involved with junior activities, are required to complete an application, or if you already hold a valid Blue Card, complete a confirm application which will be submitted to SLSQ for processing via the club. Please note that although Associate members can enjoy access to our active club houses and amenities, the clubs policy in relation to such assess restricts this access to members holding valid blue cards which have been recorded on the SLSA SurfGuard Membership System. The Blue Card Working with Children Check is confirmed by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian. This process is confidential and assists the Club in our duty of care for providing a safe environment for your children. Application forms are available via download from the NHSLSC website (lifesaving library or how to join Nippers page). Alternatively forms can be collected from Club Administration during office opening hours. To complete your Blue Card application you must present a completed form in person at Club Admin along with two forms of original identification for processing. HOW TO GET STARTED AT NOOSA NIPPERS To start at Noosa Nippers both parents/guardians and children need to be members of the club, this is completed by either renewing membership or creating a new membership profile and paying membership fees. Each child, whether new or renewing, needs to complete a pool proficiency swim and children in the U8 - U14 age groups also complete a run/swim/run proficiency. You MUST be current financial members of the club to attend proficiency sessions. The club run pool proficiency swims prior to the start of the Nipper season on certain dates only, outside of these times you will need to have the proficiency done of your own accord. All paper work must be fully completed, showing your child s name and age group, for your child to swim and the assessor to process. 8

SUNDAY NIPPERS SESSIONS Each Sunday begins with a short meeting on the beach at 7.45am in front of the club house (may vary depending on conditions). All children and their parents/guardians are required to attend these briefings to find out what is happening for the particular session and to hear about what is happening in the Club as a whole. On arrival at the club parents MUST complete the sign on sheet to register their children for the specific Sunday. If you do not sign on and sign off your child s attendance will not be counted for that session. It is imperative for accurate water safety numbers that children and signed on. Parents who have not been listed as being required for assistance MUST remain at the beach for safety reasons (in accordance with SLSA Policy). The Nipper must wear their Nipper cap at all times during the session and assemble with their age group & Manager (groups are clearly marked with flags) prior to heading off to activities. Everyone will proceed to their designated areas for the commencement of the day s program once they Age Manager has their group together. Any child, who arrives to sign on without a Parent/Guardian present, unfortunately will not be able to participate in the morning s activities. No child should be left on the beach unsupervised SESSION TIMES The u6 & u7 age groups approximately 9.15am (1 hour session). The u8 - u14 age groups approximately 10:15am (2 hour session). CANCELLATION OF NIPPERS There will be times throughout the season where Nipper Sunday sessions will not run or will be cancelled. Cancellations are unfortunate and the Junior Activities Committee do not make these decisions lightly, however due to the size of our Nipper program sessions will not run when the beaches have been closed or if rough conditions are forecast. For all other weekends where a 9

Nipper Sunday session will not be run, dates will be advised as early as possible in the season on the Nipper calendar. Please be aware that at all times we must have the correct ratios on the beach and in the water for sessions to run. WHERE DOES NIPPERS TAKE YOU A primary objective of the Junior Activities program is the introduction to the senior club after the age of 14. From here members are asked to perform beach patrols utilising skills learnt during their junior years. A Surf Rescue Certificate can be undertaken at age 13 in preparation for the years of lifesaving ahead. The reward for those who continue on to the senior ranks is considerable. In return for a members patrolling service, the Club offers a range of facilities and services such as comprehensive coaching programs, gym access and a large array of life saving skills, awards and competition opportunities. Juniors initially enter into the Under 15 category and will undergo the Bronze Medallion qualification at 15 years of age. MID-WEEK TRAINING Noosa Nippers is not just a Sunday event. Mid-week training and coaching sessions are offered to all Nippers from u8 and above, all included in your membership fee. All nippers attending these sessions must wear a pink high visibility vest available for purchase from the uniform shop and the admin office. No High Viz = No Training Sessions are normally broken down in to Board/Swim and Beach running. These sessions are held before school and after school. There is a Saturday morning session for approved U11 U14 Nipper competitors and Sunday morning surfing session for all level U8 U11 Nippers (session runs before Nipper Sunday session). Water safety is required on a 1:5 ratio for all training sessions (1 water safety to every 5 children). To assist with water safety a parent needs to hold either their SRC or Bronze Medallion. If a training session does not have enough 10

water safety personnel, preference of participation will be given to those children whose parents have signed on to assist. For further information on these sessions please speak to the coaches to discuss what option will best suit your child. A training schedule is ed out at the end of each week for the following week s program. NOOSA NIPPER SPONSORS The support Noosa Nippers receives comes in many different forms, but we couldn t run a weekly program without the ongoing support of our principal sponsors Please support them as they support your kids 11

NIPPER CLUB AND VICE CAPTAINS Each year the Club chooses Nipper captains and vice captains from the ranks of the u14 s. We encourage our young members to embrace leadership roles within the club. When selecting Club and Vice Captains it is the club s intention to further develop our young leaders. The selection process is an application and interview conducted by a panel of members, both senior and junior, selected by the JAC. 2016/2017 Nipper Captains 2016/2017 Nipper Vice Captains Maggie Harmer Locky Younger Ruby Kellett Kai Thompson COACHES PROFILES HEAD COACH - DARREN MERCER Darren began Nippers at the Thirroul Surf Lifesaving Club in NSW when he was 7 years old. At the age of 17, Darren began his professional Ironman Career, winning his 1st endurance race that same year. He continued to dominate the Kellogg s Nutri-Grain series for well over a decade. Darren s specialty was Endurance racing, winning 5 Manly Gold races and 1 Coolangatta Gold in Darren was also successful in winning the NSW State Ironman title 5 times and he is also a 2 time Australian Ironman Champion. During his many years of involvement in Surf Lifesaving, Darren was awarded The Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his services to the movement in January 1992 and he has also been inducted into NSW Sporting Hall of Champions. Darren is a Level Two Surf Coach and began his coaching career by programing and coaching himself and his brother along with the help of their father John on the South Coast of NSW 13

throughout their long and very successful careers. He was a Nipper Age Manager and Board Coach to many Mooloolaba Nippers. Darren went on to become The Junior Development Officer and Senior Board Coach at Mooloolaba and was invited to become the assistant coach of the Queensland Cyclones Team, where they won the Interstate Championships. As Head Coach of Noosa, Darren is excited and enthusiastic about setting whole club training programs (u8 years to Masters) with the support of Noosa Heads sessional coaching staff. NIPPER COACH TOM BRITTEN Tom is excited to take on his new role as Nipper Coach at NHSLSC, which will see him take charge of the development of coaching programs to expand opportunities for Noosa s next wave of Junior athletes. Tom s sporting history includes representative rugby, swimming, boxing and kayaking. He also has competition experience in surf sports, athletics, triathlons and mixed martial arts. His experience with sport started at 13 in kayaking and by the age of 18 he had competed for Australia on three different occasions. Tom also ranked fourth in the world for kayaking in the over 1000m k4 under 18 years. It was during this time that he met and engaged with many international coaches and soaked up every aspect of passion for sport. His coaching experience began at 16 when he volunteered to help introduce kids with disabilities to kayaking. Volunteering inspired Tom to start development coaching for anyone who needed help. By 2010, he was coaching squads from his local club consisting of kids from 8 years old through to Masters. Now Tom is a Sunny Coast resident ready to push Noosa Nippers to the top! Tom s mantra: My passion and enjoyment for coaching does not come from knowing more or having people look up to me, but to assist people with the same passion and enjoyment as those that helped me. During this time I have found myself being able to communicate with young kids and influence their skills by implementing physical goals and helping them achieve these with hard work, enjoyment and persistence. This is the direction I pursue in my sessions to develop young athletes and also young people that are able to succeed outside of sport. 14

BEACH COACH OMAR BAKHACH A Level 2 Beach Coach and Level 1 Sports Trainer, Noosa Heads SLSC Beach Coach Omar first obtained his surf bronze in 1977 at a notoriously wild beach on the Victorian coastline called Gunnamatta Beach. He competed at local and state competitions but his involvement in surf lifesaving eventually took a back seat for surfing and spear fishing. In the early 2000's, Omar became involved with Sunshine Beach SLSC where whispers had got out about his experience in beach competition. He began coaching flags, sprints and relays to a squad of nippers from Sunshine Beach, Noosa, Peregian and Coolum. In 2010 Head Coach, Darren Mercer, invited Omar to join him at Noosa. Omar has coached athlete development and high performance squads for SLSQ and provided speed and agility training to visiting surf sports competitors and sporting clubs. Omar s athletes have gained numerous gold, silver and bronze medals at local, state and national competition. Omar s knowledge of and experience in beach sports has been recognised through an invitation from SLSQ to be a committee member on the 4 person State Beach Sports Panel. After 6 great seasons at Noosa, in 2016/17 Omar hopes to mentor some new junior beach coaches to help with the development of junior competitors and assist with building a succession plan from Junior ranks to Senior ranks. 16 COMPETITION (CARNIVALS) Who can compete? There are carnivals throughout the season for U8 - U14 age groups. Any Nipper who has completed their competition proficiency can compete, however they must obtain the relevant age award before entry can be processed for Branch or QLD State Championships. Competition is quite possibly the most successful recruiting tool for the Surf Life Saving Movement. The Surf Sports program offers a wide range of competition events in beach, surf and pool water events along with events such as March Past and multi skill events for U14 s in first aid and champion lifesaver. Where are carnivals held: Carnivals are held throughout the Sunshine Coast Branch, stretching from Rainbow Beach to Redcliffe. Events such as Fastest Man on Sand and the QLD Youth Championships for U11 - U14 s require travel a little further afield, usually towards the Gold Coast. How long do the carnivals go for: U8 - U10 carnivals are usually held over one day whereas the U11 - U14 carnivals can be held over two days (Sat & Sun). Most carnivals marshal at approx. 7.45am, with a club warm up held at 7am. Carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day. Early arrival is required to assist with set up. How to enter: All carnival nominations are completed on the online carnival nomination system via the Nippers Carnival page on the club website. The costs to enter a carnival is covered by the club, as long as the JAC Team Selection policy is adhered to. What to Bring? Each club has a tent set up on the beach that we provide for competitors. Everyone will require plenty of water and food to last the day, sunscreen, hat, club swimwear and warm clothes if the weather/wind turns. 16

JAC CARNIVAL ENTRY To be eligible for entry into ANY carnival the Nipper & parents/guardians must abide by the following conditions: - The required pool swim and run/swim/run proficiency completed prior to the start of Nipper Sundays and relevant paperwork completed - The competition proficiency must be successfully completed during the first two sessions of Nipper Sunday s and relevant paperwork completed - Age Award must be completed prior to Branch carnival to be eligible to compete in Branch and State Titles - Nominations MUST be completed online prior to the closing date - Entry fees will be paid by NHSLSC, providing all requirements are adhered to - Please refer to the Team Selection policy for all details - At least 1 parent/guardian MUST assist with duties associated with the carnival (as deemed necessary by the JAC) No Child will be entered into a carnival without parental assistants being advised at time of nomination. 17
