2 President's Welcome Welcome everyone to the 2010/2011 season, I have no doubt with all members working together that it will be a successful year for the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club. To our new members, I am confident you will find the Club very welcoming and wish you all the best. The Management Committee is responsible for the overall management and welfare of the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club. This Committee consists of a President, Deputy President, House Manager, Treasurer, Club Captain, Junior Chairman and Secretary. The names of the current Committee members as well as section leaders and key officers along with their contact details can be found in this booklet or on the Club Website The Operations Committee, responsible for the areas of Patrol, Education and Competition is led by the Club Captain, in consultation with the section leaders and officers that make up this Committee. Additionally there is a Junior Committee and various other sub-committees in place to assist with the many and varied functions of the Glenelg SLSC. The Club uses a number of forums and mediums for communication, including but not limited to this booklet, club roll call Saturday afternoons (throughout the summer) at 5.00pm, newsletters, the Website and E-News newsletter which is ed to signed up members at least once a fortnight. Due to the fact that there is a great deal always going on it is important for all members to register for E-News. I would ask all members to seek out the appropriate person to assist when required. Generally this will be the relevant Club Officer. The main purpose of this booklet is to provide you with information about the Club s activities. Please take time to read this booklet and become familiar with its contents. Keep it close at hand so you can refer to it throughout the season. As always this booklet will not have all the information you may need, therefore we encourage you to ask questions from appropriate officers and register for the E-News so you are kept up to date. Finally I thank you for renewing or taking out initial membership with the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club. The Club has a very proud history in all aspects of Surf Life Saving, which has been recognised state wide and nationally. Particularly our Club is recognised by many because of the great community service we provide to the public. With this in mind I encourage all members to undergo some form of training throughout the season to improve skills and enhance their lifesaving abilities. 5 Patrol Requirements Glenelg SLSC Patrolling Members are requested to review and comply with the following: Only members classified as proficient and "registered" are eligible to perform patrol duties and it is each member s responsibility to gain proficiency in all achieved awards. Split patrols are to be conducted. Patrols will run from noon 6.00pm. First patrol group will patrol from noon 3.15pm. (Members should be set up on patrol by 12 noon). It is recommended to arrive minutes before your patrol starts. First patrol group will be responsible to ensure all equipment is appropriately checked and ready. Second patrol group will patrol from 3.00pm 6.00pm. Second patrol group is responsible for the cleaning and packing away of equipment, appropriately. It is each member s responsibility to ensure that they are appropriately attired for patrol. A modest swimming costume, which does not hinder rescues, preferably plain red, red/ yellow or club coloured. Board shorts or bikinis that have tied straps or are clip on are not approved. A Yellow long-sleeved patrol shirt, red patrol shorts and the red and yellow quartered cap (tied). Members may wear shoes and socks if so desired but must not be boot style in other words sandshoes that can be slipped off in case of an emergency are permissible. Members crewing IRB s may wear rash vests or wet suits as required. If weather is inclement then members may wear tracksuits. All members should be encouraged to wear a broad brimmed hat. Failure to have the correct patrol uniform may result in members not being permitted to patrol. If you have a problem with a uniform contact your Patrol Captain or the Club Vice Captain. Patrol uniforms are considered rescue equipment and are to be worn when on Patrol only. Drinking and unbecoming behaviour whilst wearing a Patrol uniform is unacceptable. It is each member s responsibility to sign the Patrol Log at the commencement of Patrol. Smoking is not permitted while on patrol or by members in the patrol area. Members unable to fulfil patrol obligations must organise a Patrol substitution and in the case of a last minute emergency, advise their Patrol Captain or the Club Vice Captain prior to Patrol. Members failing to achieve the above will be required to complete one make up Patrol and one penalty patrol within one month of their patrol breach. Failure to achieve this will result in the disenabling of members FOB eliminating access to club resources and possible club suspension as outlined in club constitution. All Patrol breaches are recorded on the Surf Life Saving national website to comply with regulations. This will result in an unfortunate black mark against member s names forever. 6 Patrol Roster Information Please see noticeboards and s throughout October for the latest patrol roster. If you have a job that requires weekend work, you may apply for exemption from the roster. This allows you to perform your patrolling duties when practical. This is only granted on unique occasions, minimum patrol hours are still applicable for competition (i.e. 16 hours). Proficiency Requirements All bronze medallion members are required to complete the annual proficiency award. This is usually completed by the end of November, if you wish to patrol or compete for the club this is a requirement. We run specific days generally throughout weekends in November which should be plenty of time to complete. Most candidates get all the components completed in one day. The latest information will be posted on the noticeboards and reminded at club role call at Saturday s at 5pm throughout the season. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Do I have to do patrols? A: Conducting patrols is a prerequisite for all senior members. Q: What do I do if I can not carry out patrols due to work commitments? A: We will endeavour to roster you on a patrol which bests suits your situation however if that can t work, you are expected to write a formal letter to the Management Committee seeking exemption. Q: What can I do if I am having trouble getting a patrol swap? A: There is an patrol swap list which has been successful in the past. Contact the Club Vice Captain to have your name added. Q: What happens if I fail to carry out my patrols more than once? A: You will be liable to club suspension as detailed in the constitution. 5 Members Handbook 2009/2010 Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club

7 Senior Competition and Surf Carnivals Traditionally at Glenelg we have strong ethics regarding our inter-club competitions, which also leads into State and National events. We have many aspects of competition from patrol and first aid type events to beach, swim, board, ski and boat events. Our beach team and March past events are great if you re not keen on getting wet. Either way there are literally dozens of events to choose from and enjoy. Lots of age groups: under 19, under 23, Open and Masters (Over 30 s). We encourage everyone to participate, so get involved and give something a go. There are usually about 4 or 5 surf carnivals throughout summer at various locations. See the competition program later in this booklet. Below I have listed all of the events with a brief description to give you a basic idea of what each one entails. If you are keen to find out more about these events please the respective area captains listed in the front of this handbook. Beach Team Strong background at Glenelg, top national level coaches with national and world medals won by our team. Events include: Beach Sprints (90m), Beach Flags, Beach Relays and 2km run events. If not getting wet is your thing then this is the go. Surfboat Rowing Rowing involves 4 rowers and a sweep per boat, race distances are around 800m, rowing in surf is something boaties can never get enough of. For those that like excitement this event is for you. There is a few sponsored boat series to enable crews to compete both locally and interstate if your keen. Open to men and women. Board Paddling Traditionally one of our strong events, although an area we need more competitors. Board races typically race around buoy s approx. distance of 350m. Events include individual Board race, Board relays and Board rescues. Those with a background in surfing or swimming would be great at this event. Ski Paddling One of our most competitive events on offer, we have many local heroes in our club that hold many championships. A ski race involves a distance of about 500m length. Events include Single Ski, Double Ski, Mixed Double and Ski relays. Both board and ski events crossover to other events including iron man and taplin relay events. A great event for those with good balance and who love a challenge. Swimming This is an area we need more participation across the board. We have several top class swimmers within the club but need to build on the amount of events we fill. We offer training squads at Westminster & Immanuel Pools with a great coach as well as weekend surf coaching. Events include Surf Race, Surf Teams, Tube Rescues, Board Rescues, Belt Swims and many others. 8 Patrol Competitions This event is quite unique and offers another level to your bronze medallion. The event is based around on skills as a Surf Lifesaver in a practical way. Event includes, Resuscitation, First Aid, Theory paper and a Rescue scenarios. A great way to polish your skills as a Surf Lifesaver. A strong event traditionally at Glenelg. First Aid Competitions Again this is an event based solely on your first aid knowledge; competition involves every facet of first aid practices as well as practical tests. Again a great event to fine tune your skills as a Surf Lifesaver. We have been very successful in these events over the years. March Past This is one event that traditionally is for the older crew but not anymore, we are looking to fill an Under 19 and Under 23 teams this year. Each team consists of 12 people and is generally recognised as a demonstration event. If low intensity exercise, with a strong focus event is your number this is the one for you. This technical based event has for a long time been successful at Glenelg. IRB Racing For the warm blooded folk who don t mind getting in the water over winter. IRB racing has been around for years with great success within our club. You will need to complete your IRB driver s award to be a driver or IRB Crew award to be allowed to race, events for both men and women. For those that like adrenalin and water, this one is for you. Surfing This involves both Short Board and Long Board Surfing. Events are held down south in early spring and if you re a keen surfer then get amongst it. We have several champions over the years in both Short and Long Board. If surfing is your pastime then take up the challenge and compete in these events. Glenelg fields extremely strong teams year in year out. Rescue & Resuscitation ( R & R ) This event is basically a drill exercise that involves retrieval of a patient from the water, pick up and carry to beach and then perform resuscitation. Teams are five man and six man, and are judged on technique. Great event if you re keen on low physical activity, great for a group of younger crew, men and women. Pool Rescue Events This is a new event to surf lifesaving, involves various pool rescue techniques performed in a pool. It has become a big event in the international competitions. 9 Glenelg SLSC Junior Program Our Aims Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club aims to encourage all children to achieve, do their best and develop to their full potential, while having fun. We encourage participation in all activities. We invite you to read this book, we hope it is useful and will answer any questions that you have about our Nipper program or our Club. Our aim is to foster children s development through the Nipper program and prepare them to be patrolling members of the club with a strong desire to continue on to be active, Senior Club Members. The Nipper Program There are over 27,000 junior surf lifesavers (nippers) in Australia. Nippers start learning about surf awareness and safety through Surf Life Saving Education Program (Surf Ed). They are also able to participate in board paddling, swimming, running, wading and other activities and games. Practising these skills allows children to compete in Club and State Surf Life Saving Carnivals representing their clubs. Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club offers a program of surf awareness, skills coaching and competition over various levels, similar to the events Australia s Surf Life Savers participate in. While competition is an important element, the surf awareness and education aspect is a primary aim. Children are taught from the youngest ages how to respect the surf, read the surf and use the surf to their advantage. This is done in an environment of fun, healthy lifestyle and camaraderie which is unique to surf life saving. Parental Involvement and Membership Parents are invited and encouraged to share the experiences of Junior Activities with their children, especially with the younger age groups. Involvement within other aspects of the Club also welcomed. This may include the gaining of awards to assist in providing water cover, coaching specific disciplines, officiating and administration along with participating in social and fundraising activities. You are definitely welcome at Glenelg. Parent membership is encouraged and is vital for the operational success of the club. 10 Assisting in setting up of beach and carrying down equipment. Washing off boards or helping pack up the beach equipment at the end of training, Assist the Age Group Leader during training Assist in fundraising activities Volunteer to help with the BBQ Gain your Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion to become a Water Safety Officer. Become an Official. Clubs are required to supply Officials at all carnivals. Short training courses are provided by SLSSA. NO OFFICIALS FROM GLENELG MEANS OUR KIDS ARE UNABLE TO COMPETE, THEREFORE YOUR HELP IS APPRECIATED Note: Junior membership and numbers within Age Groups may be restricted at the discretion of the Junior Committee in order to maintain a healthy, manageable and safe level of participation. 11 Junior Patches/Awards Summary OVERVIEW: Each year junior members are required to complete several competencies as part of their surf lifesaving experience. JUNIOR PRELIMINARY SKILLS ASSESSMENT Many activities that will be completed by children as part of junior activities will be conducted in the water. To ensure that all children have a suitable swimming ability to allow them to participate in these activities, SLSA has developed a Junior Preliminary Skills Assessment for each age group. Every junior member is required to participate in this evaluation, conducted by the club, prior to any junior water activity training or competition being undertaken. It includes a swim and a float which is progressively increased by age group. Normally this would occur at the very first training session but if not, this must be completed before any water activity is undertaken. The intent of this is to conduct an evaluation of each junior member's own personal swimming and water survival ability for the information of the member, parent and age manager. Note: It is not an assessment which if not completed competently precludes the child from becoming a member or continuing with junior surf education or training activities. 12 Following the evaluation Any child who does not meet the required evaluation level will require a higher level of supervision when involved in water based activities at the discretion of the club. It is a requirement that these children remain in shallow water and based on a 1:1 ratio until the child is deemed competent in relation to the preliminary skills evaluation guidelines. Any child who does complete the preliminary skills evaluation competently can progress to water based junior activities noting regular water safety 1:5 ratio requirements must be provided as per the junior water safety policy. Using intra-club water activities for skills progression Clubs are encouraged to conduct intra-club swimming and board training and competition related events in a progressively challenging but safe environment regarding distances, water safety personnel and in relation to the abilities of their junior members. This intra-club environment is where clubs should really encourage their juniors to challenge their own personal skills and abilities to achieve their personal goals. They should progressively work towards competently completing the official carnival competition distances in swimming, board, multi-discipline and relay related events if they wish to pursue inter-club competition. The intra-club environment is where age managers and water safety personnel are more likely to have a better understanding of each of their own members swimming or board paddling skill level. This contrasts with inter-club competition where water safety personnel may have no idea who specifically to keep a close eye on and are not there to personally encourage swimmers around the course. 11 Members Handbook 2009/2010 Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club

13 JUNIOR COMPETITION SKILLS EVALUATION AND COMPETITION ELIGIBILITY From the age of 8 (Under 9) juniors can begin to compete in inter-club competition at SLSSA Carnivals. There is no competition skills evaluation requirement for juniors to compete in non-water related events including the wade, wade relay and running legs of the Cameron relay. To ensure that all junior members who wish to compete in swim and board related events have the ability, strength and fitness standard to complete the courses, they must be able to complete the Junior Activities Competition Skills Evaluation for their age group which is a water proficiency assessment. The Competition Skills Evaluation consists of the SLSA minimum standard guideline which is the competition course and distance in the ocean as prescribed in the 33rd Edition of the Surf Sports Manual. SLSSA also requires competitors to complete this as a timed assessment to demonstrate an appropriate level of competency in swimming ability to complete the Carnival course in a safe and timely manner. This includes swim, board and related team events such as the board or swim leg of Cameron relay, board relay and/or swim teams. PLEASE NOTE: THE PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT SWIM IS A PREREQUISITE TO THE COMPETITION SKILLS EVALUATION (OCEAN TIMED SWIM) AND THESE ARE TWO SEPARATE SWIMS. ONE SWIM CANNOT BE USED TO QUALIFY A CHILD FOR THE OTHER REQUIREMENT. All Clubs and Age Managers have a heightened duty of care in an interclub Carnival environment to ensure that their junior members are safe and can confidently and competently complete the Carnival competition course and distance. These distances may change on carnival days depending on surf conditions but Age Managers must be aware of the duty of care to those competitors under their control and be confident that they will be able to complete the course set by the Officials on the day. This means that: ONLY juniors who have achieved their competition skills evaluation for their relevant Age Group are to be entered into water events at Carnivals AND Clubs, Age Managers and Parents should also take into consideration the conditions, the course and the physical and emotional state of their juniors on the day of the Carnival and only enter those they consider to be confident, competent and in a fit state to complete the course in a safe and timely manner. 12 Members Handbook 2009/2010 Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club

14 Training Nippers are encouraged to attend training with the senior members. This is a great way of learning skills and techniques from our senior competitors in areas. Training sessions varies so please contact the Section Leaders: Boards Joel Leaver Sprints/Flags Lachlan Greethead Swim Joe Black Ski (14yo and over) Troy Wuttke Club Captain Susan Barnes Juniors are more than welcome to participate in the weekly club swim held Saturday afternoons at 4.05pm, during the season. Glenelg SLSC encourages the Under 14, Under 15, Under 17 s and Seniors to work together for a smooth transition from a Junior Member to a Senior Member. Junior Surf Education Awards The Junior Development Program pathways knowledge and skills learning outcomes through lessons that are tailored to each of the age groups; ensuring the content is relevant, in line with lifesaving and surf sports most up to date training standards and most of all exciting! The program is based on participatory evaluation and not assessed on competence; this means your child must only be actively involved in each of the lessons to be eligible for the award. We believe this is the best way to introduce juniors to surf life saving where fun takes priority over being tested. Below is a summary of each of the surf education awards: Surf Play 1 & 2 (Under 6 & Under 7). Surf Play is the program designed for the most junior members. There is no award for Surf Play the focus is on play, participation and fun. Activities and games will be the focus of the sessions with a number of simple beach safety and awareness lessons available such as: basic safety practices during activities, what makes up a beach environment, sunsmart guidelines, the importance of having an adult with them at the beach, what a lifesaver is and what they do, wading, beach sprinting and beach flags. Surf Aware 1 (Under 8) Surf Aware 1 is the first of the junior development awards. The focus is on understanding, identifying and demonstrating sunsmart guidelines and dangers that relate to themselves, as well as what it means to feel safe. They learn to recognise whether they are, or someone else is, in an emergency situation and how to get help. Ecosurf discusses the beach environment and communities surf lifesavers operate in. Surf sports skills focus on; bodyboarding, wading, dolphin-diving, beach sprint starts and beach flags starts. Surf Aware 2 (Under 9) Surf Aware 2 builds on Surf Aware 1. Personal Safety Networks are introduced so participants are comfortable asking for help; Ecosurf talks about the impact surf lifesavers can have on the beach. Safety of self steps up a gear by introducing safety tips and the ability to identify hazardous surf conditions. As an U9, participants can begin to use a nipper board, so basic board positioning and paddling is introduced. Other surf sports skills focus on; body surfing, sand running technique and diving for a beach flag. 13 Members Handbook 2009/2010 Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club

15 Surf Safe 1 (Under 10) The first of the Surf Safe awards Surf Safe 1 begins to get a little more specific in its lessons introducing a number of new topics. Participants will identify adults at the surf clubs they can ask to help them, in Ecosurf they focus on water conservation and in sun safety the spotlight is on the consequences of skin damage. Participants learn about rips, recognising unsafe behaviours and relating these areas to preventative actions. Resuscitation is introduced for the first time with an opportunity to experience CPR on a manikin. Rescue techniques are also introduced for the first time as participants learn to use body boards to assist distressed swimmers and experience rescue tubes. Surf sports skills focus on; entering and negotiating the surf on a board and beach relay baton changes. Surf Safe 2 (Under 11) Surf Safe 2 takes a significant step up in the level of content. As U11 s they have the ability to learn more technical aspects of lifesaving and are able to be more physical in surf sports skills. Participants are encouraged to persist when needing help and Ecosurf gets into energy conservation. There is a strong focus on recognising at risk people and recognising and managing patients suffering from a range of basic first aid cases. As a 10 year old participants can learn how to perform CPR and there is an opportunity to work towards a Resuscitation Certificate. There is also a strong section on communication both interpersonal and through beach signage. There is a significant percentage of surf sports skills which focus on; board dismounts, catching waves on a board, board relay, surf swimming techniques, crouching beach sprint starts and ironman/iron woman and cameron relay transitions. Surf Smart 1 (Under 12) Surf Smart 1 continues similar to Surf Safe 2. Participants begin to learn about their rights and responsibilities as a member of SLSA, the Ecosurf lesson looks at how weather impacts on the beach environment. Personal health & wellbeing and sun safety is focused on skin cancer and staying fit and healthy respectively. The role of patrols is first introduced to this award as is the managing rips and using them to assist in rescues. As an 11 year old, participants can work towards a Basic Emergency Care Certificate (as well as a Resuscitation Certificate). This certificate comprises of lessons in the human body, complete basic first aid and resuscitation. Some more signals are introduced that compliment the first set previously learnt. Previous board skills come into play as participants learn how to conduct a board rescue. The focus of surf sports skills is to complete all the skills in each skill set and includes; rolling under a wave on a board, diving under large waves, beach sprint arm and leg drive and beach flags race strategies. Surf Smart 2 (Under 13) The last of the junior development awards, Surf Smart 2 looks to wrap up the skills and knowledge learnt in all the previous awards. Participants learn about what the SLSA Member Safety and Wellbeing Policy is, and in Ecosurf they tackle the issues of Global Warming and Climate Change and how they will impact on surf life saving. Surf Safety is wrapped up into the 10 Surf Safety Tips, Communication focuses on the importance of communicating with beach users, Patrols identifies other professional emergency services and participants will experience performing a tube rescue. Participants can work towards a Basic Emergency Care Certificate (as well as a Resuscitation Certificate). This certificate comprises of lessons in the human body, complete basic first aid and resuscitation. The focus of surf sports skills is on bringing all the skills learnt in previous awards together to participate in an event for each of the disciplines: board race, board rescue, surf race, run-swim-run, beach sprint, beach relay, beach flags, ironman/iron woman and cameron relay. 14 Members Handbook 2009/2010 Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club

16 Surf Rescue Certificate (Under 14) When participants progress from the junior development awards and/or reach the age of 13 they are eligible to study for and gain their Surf Rescue Certificate. This extends their knowledge and skills developed to date to be ultimately qualified to participate in surf lifesaving patrols. Participants will usually continue to be involved in the nipper program during this year continuing to increase their surf sports skills whilst enjoying the camaraderie and friendships they have developed throughout nippers. This provides them with the pathway to move into the senior ranks in the current and/or following season. Swimming Policy Swimming is obviously a big part of Surf Life Saving, however Surf Life Saving is not a learn to swim program. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to provide swimming instruction for those children who are unable to swim. Minimum survival skills will be required to be displayed before aquatic activities are undertaken. Swimming training for all members and non- members is available Monday evenings at Westminster School and Thursday evenings at Immanuel School between 7 8 pm, cost of $6.00 (members), $8.00 (non-members). This is endurance and conditioning training, not swimming lessons. Parents are encouraged to obtain qualified swimming tuition for their children to ensure these minimum standards are met. Junior Squads will be run at Westminster Pool Monday Nights 6-7pm for kids aged between 8 14 these sessions are for teaching correction and not learn to swim. Cost $5.00 We do recognise that swimming in the sea is a new experience for many children and that even the competent pool swimmers can find this challenging at first. The role of the Surf Life Saving Club and the Age Group Leaders is to encourage children and to help develop their confidence and skills swimming in the sea as well as provide surf education. Insurance All members who sign the Glenelg SLSC membership forms, pay the clubs designated fees and are proficient in their age/category requirements are insured under Surf Life Saving South Australia s policy. This includes participation in Club training and competing at sanctioned SLSSA events. 17 Safety Glenelg SLSC recognises Surf Life Saving SA s Sun Smart Policy and Sports Medicine Australia s Safety Guidelines for children in sport. SLIP SLOP SLAP! In all aquatic activities, one (1) bronze holder or qualified cadet shall maintain water cover for no more than five (5) junior members. Medical conditions and any special requirements for a junior participant must be brought to the attention of the Junior Chairman prior to the undertaking of activities. Junior activities will be undertaken in an environment that will be made as safe as possible. This includes facilities and equipment. Junior participants should enjoy their involvement through quality teaching and coaching. To ensure this, parents, coaches and Age Group Leaders will be encouraged to complete Level 1 Coaching Course. Hot Weather Policy Please watch the Friday evening forecast on television. Saturday Training: If the forecast temperature is 38c or higher, no junior activities will be held. Carnivals: For high temperatures, a modified carnival may be run (8am start with no beach events). The decision to modify or cancel is up to the discretion of the carnival referee on the day. Inclement Weather Policy Inclement weather shall be deemed as low temperatures, high winds, and high seas. The junior activities training program will be modified depending on the conditions (in adopting our duty of care), may be cancelled. The decision to cancel junior activities will be the responsibility of the Junior Chairman and/or the on duty Patrol Captain. Saturday s Program and Training Requirements START TIME 1.30pm FINISH TIME 4.00pm Under 7 s 1.30pm to 3.15pm (If numbers permit this age group may be split into2 groups) All juniors must sign on with Age Group Leaders before going onto the beach and sign off at the end of training in order to account for all children on the beach. The Glenelg SLSC is not a child minding service and parents are expected to be present or have an appointed guardian. Parents must advise the Age Group Leader if they are unable to be present. The juniors/parents will be responsible for the carrying down and return, including washing and packing away, of all boards to be used on the day. In the case of Under 7 s (tiny tots) it is a requirement that a parent or guardian be present on the beach at all times with their child. 16 Members Handbook 2009/2010 Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club

18 Uniform and Clothing The following items are required each week: Bathers (preferably Club Bathers) Rash Vest Protective Hat Competition Hat (not required for Under 7 s) Sun block Towel (named) Water Bottle Long Sleeve Club Tee (optional) Goggles (optional) Club Bathers, rash vest, productive broadbrim hat, competition hat, long sleeve tees are all available upstairs at the club from 1.00pm every Saturday (during summer). When children are at carnivals it is encourage that they wear club clothing. ALL BELONGINGS AND CLOTHING ARE TO BE LABELLED Under 7 s will be provided with an age group hat, all other age groups require to wear club competition cap with their age group number sewn on the front. Numbers are supplied by GSLSC. These minimum requirements must be met. Supervision Age Group Leaders All Age Groups will be allocated Age Group Leaders who are parents or interested members, who have volunteered to manage the age group. They are responsible for the coordination of activities on Saturday afternoons along with overseeing event entries and activities at Sunday Carnivals. ALL AGE GROUP LEADERS MUST Be registered member of the Glenelg SLSC Attend and complete Age Group Leaders and Nipper Safe Course (must be over 18 years old for Nipper Safe Course Have a current Police Clearance Certificate (PD267) as sighted and recorded by SLSSA. There are normally two (2) Age Group Leaders allocated to an age group. These responsibilities may be interchangeable with other interested parents who are also encouraged to participate and assist Age Group Leaders with their responsibilities. For further information please speak to a Junior Committee member. All aquatic activities will be conducted under the supervision of one (1) bronze holder or qualified cadet per five (5) junior members. These may include members from Senior Patrol of the day, but the priority of patrol members is to keep the beach safe and they are only there to assist if available. Any members involved at a State Level i.e. Officials, Assessors. Please take completed form to a Police Station with proof of ID to be stamped and signed, no FEE is charged. The certificate will be posted to SLSSA within 5 15 working days If you already have a current Police Clearance Certificate (within last 3 years) this will need to be sighted by SLSSA and you are not required to apply for new one. This is a necessary to ensure SLSSA can endorse the member (photocopies are not accepted) Failure to complete this form will result in member not being able to participate/assist in Junior Activities. Junior Competition and Carnivals Informal Competition is encouraged each week during Saturday training. All junior members will be encouraged to achieve, do their best, and develop to their full potential, while having fun. Challenging competition is one element of this development process. Formal Competition will also be encouraged for children in Under 9 Under 14 s through inter-club carnivals. All competitors must have achieved their Yellow Patch to compete in beach events and Red Patch for water events. These proficiencies ensure that children are capable of completing the competition course in a reasonable time. Saturday training sessions are structured towards achieving these goals. As part of the club s commitment towards developing their junior members, specialist coaches are being organised to help train and develop these members who compete in carnivals. Carnivals are a great way for nippers to practice their skills in a friendly atmosphere, Children are encouraged to improve their personal bests. Carnival attendance is not compulsory but is strongly encouraged. Under 7 s and 8 s do not compete at Carnivals. On Carnival days, nippers report to their Age Group Leaders in the Glenelg tent by 8.00am, events start at 9.00am. Children are to remain with their Age Group Leaders during the Carnival. Parental assistance is required in carrying towels, water, goggles, boards, sun block etc. Club Championships is held during the season, participation at club champs is encouraged. It is a requirement that children complete all events to acquire points, failure to do so will result in child being ineligible for particular trophy.
