Saints Swimming Club has operated from St Augustine s College, Cairns since St Augustine s set up Saints Swimming in 2008 where it developed a progressive program capable to taking children from the Learn to Swim through to National level competition. Saints Swimming operates year round in a heated pool. The program has an extensive land training program which complements the swim training using an air-conditioned gymnasium and basketball arena. Saints Swimming Club Inc would like to welcome our new and existing members to the season. Our aim is to promote the sport of swimming and we wish you all a very successful season with our club. This booklet provides you with information on how the Saints Swim Club and Saints Swimming operates. For more information see also Club Website: Facebook: Saints Swimming, Cairns Pool Noticeboards, Club Room

5 HEAD COACH / ST AUGUSTINE S DIRECTOR OF SWIMMING Kirk Donaldson Kirk Donaldson was employed by St Augustine s College in 2008 with consultation with Saints Swim Club to re-establish the competitive program. Like many coaches Kirk was involved as a competitive swimmer and a family that owned a 25m pool where his father coached a local girl to final at Montreal Olympics. While completing a Bachelor of Economics, continued his coaching and upon completion seized the opportunity to learn from Australian Men s Team coach Brian Sutton in Sydney s Eastern Suburbs. It was this apprenticeship where he learnt most about high performance programming and creating a successful environment. Kirk joined the large Jones Swim program which had one of Sydney s largest age group programs. Here Kirk honed ideas on how a well-structured skill and technique progression developed babies into champions. Kirk had a break from coaching in 1997 while he played a rugby season in Ireland, travelled, and worked in finance in London. In 2001 Kirk had the opportunity to set up a swim school in Shrewsbury, UK and take over as Head Coach where he transformed a struggling club into the top club in Shropshire. During this time he trained national level swimmers, junior GB pentathlon competitors while Gemma Almond who came through the learn to swim progression has gone onto represent Great Britain in Paralympics. From my experiences as a swimmer and a coach I believe strongly in developing technique and skills firstly. The endurance and stamina aspects are all too often developed with incorrect technique. I enjoy setting goals to challenge swimmers physically and mentally. The greatest reward from swimming coaching is to watch them achieve small and large goals which previously they didn t believe possible.
