2 Family Zone Monday - Thursday 5:00-8 :00pm Saturday 9:00-12:00pm The Cobourg YMCA Family Zone allows parents to workout or try a new class while their kids enjoy great youth programs. Ages 3-12yrs Children get to choose from any of the three activities during Family Zone hours. Family Zone is only available for YMCA Northumberland members only. Get Creative There s a little artist in each child waiting for an opportunity to express themselves. Children will have tons of fun in a variety of art and drama activities. Be Physical For the child who is interested in all sports and challenging team building initiatives. Emphasis will be placed on fun and fair play. Find Your Zen Kick back at the end of the day and enjoy reading a book, playing board games or listening to music with friends. Note: A parent or guardian must be in the building while kids are participating in Family Zone. Children can be dropped off anytime during family zone hours with staff at PlayCentre.

3 Winter 2018 Youth Program Guide Youth Programs Drop-in Programs Non-members: Day use fee 10 Week Programs Non-members: $85 11 Week Programs Non-members: $93 There will be no programs Monday February 19 (Family Day), Friday March 30 (Good Friday), and March (March Break). Programs that take place on Monday and Friday are 10 weeks in length. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday programs will be 11 weeks in length. Train lika a Ninja 3-5 Ninjas in training will focus on developing strength, stamina, and agility in relays, games, team-building and weekly obstacle courses that change every week. Thursday 4:30-5:00pm Parkour 3-5 Use body movement to run, jump, climb, swing, and roll to negotiate fun obstacles while making your way through the challenging course each week. Tuesday 4:00-4:30pm Saturday 11:00-11:30am Learn to Cook 4-5 Follow the secret recipe to become a Master Chef. With weekly mystery cooking challenges, a pinch of menu planning, and laughter to taste. Aspiring Chefs will enjoy their creations at the end of each class and create their own recipe book filled with delicious dishes. Wednesday 5:15-5:45pm Saturday 10:00-10:30am Location: PlayCentre Swim and Movie Night 6+ Come with your friends and have a splash in the pool, watch a movie, take part in a craft activity or play in the gym. Friday 6:30-9:00pm Location: Cycle Studio Parkour 6-8 Use body movement to run, jump, climb, swing, and roll to negotiate fun obstacles while making your way through the challenging course each week. Tuesday 4:30-5:15pm Saturday 9:00-9:45am Drop-in Sports 6-10 Soccer, basketball, floor hockey and more! Participants will develop physical literacy skills in a sport-based program. Monday 4:00-5:00pm Wednesday 4:00-5:00pm Let s Cook 6-10 It s time to get creative in the kitchen! Make use of proper cooking techniques, learn about safety in the kitchen and healthy eating, while preparing healthy snacks and tasty temptations. Monday 6:00-6:45pm Wednesday 6:00-6:45pm Saturday 10:45-11:30am Location: PlayCentre Glee Club 6-10 Practice your favourite songs with friends and put together your own jammin hit list. This club will give you a chance to hang out with other youth and solve the cube. Bring your own cube or use one of ours. Thursday* 6:00-7:00pm *Group meets every first Thursday of the month Location: PlayCentre Aqua Adventure 8-12 Spend this session in the pool practicing various aquatic activities including water polo, swimming, synchro and underwater hockey. Children will grow more comfortable and confident in the pool while having fun. s must be able to pass the Swim Test. Girl Empowerment 9-12 Join us to develop your creativity, build new friendships, and discuss topics related to girls. A great program that provides youth girls with the opportunity to express themselves creatively through art, drama and craft activities Monday 6:30-7:30pm Location: Child Care YMCA Youth Ambassadors Youth Yoga Yoga classes are designed to be fun and engaging for young teens helping them learn simple yoga sequences. Develop flexibility, strength, coordination, and have fun making new friends. Monday 5:00-5:30pm Location: Fitness Studio Members: FREE Non members: Day use fee 10+ Y core values form the basis of this leadership development program. Topics include communication, teamwork, problem solving, planning and organizing, health and fitness, philanthropy, group dynamics and volunteerism. Wednesday 6:00-7:30pm Location: Association Services (House) The Music Room 10+ The music room is a place for beginners/ novices to try an instrument, play along with their favorite song/video or create their own sound. Come jam with friends and special guests to explore your musical talents. Monday 6:30-7:15pm Location: Cycle Studio Youth Nights Every Friday youth are invited to come to the YMCA and use the pool, gym and conditioning room. We will also have some special events and workshops starting at 8pm. No membership is required, but photo ID must be presented. Friday 7:00-9:00pm Location: Cobourg YMCA Members: FREE Non members: Day use fee Cooking for Teens Ready to venture into the kitchen on your own? Join us to experiment with the basics of healthy eating and food preparation as you discover how easy it is to cook by yourself. Create healthy entrées and more. Wednesday 7:00-8:30pm Location: Child Care Sport Conditioning for Youth Teen Strength This program allows participants to earn their shoe tags by learning the operation of cardio machines, pin-loaded resistance training machines, and free weights. Participants must complete the 4 components of training before receiving their shoe tag. Participants must book an appointment with Membership Services to begin their session Location: Personal Conditioning Centre Teen Nights Join other teens every Friday night for a night of fun! Take part in different activities at the YMCA or join us when we hit the road to take part in activities such as lazer tag and glow in the dark mini putt. Friday 7:00-9:00pm Location: Cobourg YMCA Through various types of exercise including circuit training, plyometrics and agility drills, youth will improve their conditioning in areas such as speed, agility, endurance, strength,power, flexibility and core strength. The swim team builds self-esteem, confidence, sportsmanship and a strong sense of team. Our coaches will work on improving endurance while improving swimming skills. With a focus on teamwork and healthy competition, our program offers opportunities to participate in fun, friendly competitions with other swimmers. Non-members: $150 ($75 per day) Junior Lifeguard Club Junior Lifeguard club offers serious fun for kids eight years and up who can swim at least 25 meters and tread water for two minutes. Junior Lifeguard Club provides an action-packed challenge for kids who love the water. Our mission is to provide participants with the training and education so they can become one of the elite lifeguards at the YMCA. Prerequisite: 8 years old, tread for 2 min, swim 25 m Non-members: $150 ($75 per day) Tuesday 6:30-8:00pm Saturday 9:00-10:00am Monday 6:30-7:30pm Thursday 6:30-8:00pm

8 OUR SWIM LEVELS (6mo-3yrs) Caregiver assisting child program to develop comfort in the water, familiarity to environment and to promote water fun. Starfish/Duck/Sea Turtle Bobber (3-5yrs) Gaining comfort in the water, blowing bubbles with gradual facial immersion, front & back floats with assistance. Sea Otter (3-5yrs) Must be comfortable entering and exiting the pool on their own, as well as putting their face in the water. To complete: child must be able to float on their front and back and swim 5m unassisted. Salamander Glider (3-5yrs) Must be able to float, swim 5m unassisted in shallow water. Must be comfortable beginning the transition from shallow to deep water with assistance. Sunfish Diver (3-5yrs) Comfort in deep water. To complete: 10m back and front swim with leg and arm action, as well as front and back float in deep water. Crocodile Surfer/Dipper (3-5yrs) Surfer Surface support for 30sec, front and back swim with arm action and flutter kick up to 15m, side breathing, face in with buoyant aid. Dipper Front and back swim 25m, intro to front and back crawl, standing dive, and surface support for 45 seconds. Whale Otter (6 yrs+) This level is for beginner swimmers. To complete: submerge, holding breath, front and back float unassisted, front and back swim 5m. Swim Kids 1 Seal (6 yrs+) Deep end activities on a more regular basis. Build endurance and stamina to proceed onto length swimming. To complete: surface support 20sec; front and back float in deep water unassisted; front and back swim 10m. Swim Kids 2 Dolphin (6 yrs+) Build endurance and stamina for length swimming and instruction. To complete: tread in deep water 45sec, front glide with kick, face in, sidebreathing 15m, front and back swim with arm and leg action 15m. Jump into deep water and swim 15m. Swim Kids 3 (6 yrs+) Introduction to length swimming. To complete: initial standard front crawl 25m; back swim 25m; tread water 60sec; jump into deep water and swim 50m. Swim Kids 4 Star 1 Star 2 Star 3 Star 4 Star 5 Star 6 Star 7 To complete: front crawl intermediate standard; back crawl initial standard; tread water 90sec; endurance swim of 75m. Swim Kids 5 To complete: front crawl advanced standard; back crawl intermediate standard; elementary backstroke initial standard; endurance swim 350m (14 lengths) throughout program; tread water 2min. Swim Kids 6 To complete: back crawl advanced standard; elementary backstroke intermediate standard; breast stroke initial standard; endurance swim 300m (12 lengths). Swim Kids 7 To complete: recognition and care for an obstructed, conscious victim; eggbeater kick 60sec; elementary backstroke 50m advanced standard, breast stroke 50m intermediate standard. Endurance swim 400m (16 lengths). Swim Kids 8 To complete: swim 200m in under 6min; eggbeater kick 2min; breast stroke 50m advanced standard; sidestroke 25m initial standard; endurance swim 500m (20 lengths). Swim Kids 9 To complete: rescue unconscious victim with obstructed airway; sidestroke 50m intermediate standard; butterfly stroke 25m initial standard; endurance swim 600m(24 lengths); help teach a swim skill. Swim Kids 10 To complete: recognition and care for bone/joint injuries; respiratory distress and asthma/anaphylaxis; create and deliver 3 fun activities for a stroke/ skill; 400m swim in under 12min.

9 Going for a swim? Please review our aquatic guidlines to help YMCA Northumberland maintain the safety of all members, guests and staff. 0-5yrs Children 0-5 years must be accompanied in the water with a parent or guardian(16yrs+) at all times at a ratio of 1 guardian to 2 children regardless if they are able to pass the facility swim test or not. 6-9yrs Children 6-9 years of age who have not passed the facility swim test must be directly supervised by a parent or guardian(16yrs+) at all times at a ratio of 1 guardian to 2 children. If the children are wearing lifejackets the ratio may increase to 1 guardian to 4 children. 6-9yrs Children 6-9 years of age who can pass the facility swim test may swim on their own provided a parent or guardian(16yrs+)is supervising them from the pool deck. Adults may supervise a maximum of 4 children. 10yrs + Individuals 10+ years of age who are not able to pass the facility swimming test will be directed to swim in the pool area appropriate to their abilities. Facility Swim Test Participants must be able to swim without flotation devices of any kind, 25m with proper arm movement, their face in the water without stopping and without touching the bottom or sides of the pool. Participants of any age may be asked to perform a swim test.
