3 OUR CAUSE IN ACTION As a charitable organization, the Y s mission is to help everyone build a healthy spirit, mind and body. Every day, we work together to make a meaningful difference in the life of each person who walks through our doors. Like many in her generation, Alicia cares for her ailing mother and babysits her grandchildren. After having her hip replaced, finding time for herself felt like an indulgence until she committed to the Y s free, 12-week Beginner Fitness (B. Fit). Even as a long-time, active Y member, the structure of B. Fit gave me the free time for selfcare and motivation I needed to not fall into a sedentary lifestyle. My coach showed me how to properly use the equipment and it became a part of my daily routine. I used to swim four laps in the pool and now, my lungs and legs are stronger and I can swim 24 laps thanks to B. Fit! 8 SWIM Over the years at the Y, we have taught thousands of children, teens and adults to swim, which has helped to minimize the risk of drowning in our community. Swimming is a life skill that builds self-esteem and confidence. Our programs are focused on building strong, secure and confident individuals. Swim Lesson Program Our new swim lessons are specifically tailored to the participant s age, swimming ability, level of physical development and confidence in the water. Participants will progress to the next stage based on swim evaluations. It is not uncommon for participants to remain in the same stage for multiple sessions while they develop all the skills necessary to advance. The YMCA Swim Lessons program helps adults, kids, and families learn an important life skill and supports them in gaining the knowledge, ability and stamina to become strong and confident swimmers. Our program uses skill-based instruction through activities, maximizes physical activity, emphasizes safety, elevates character and engages families. There are three general categories of YMCA Swim Lessons. Swim Starters develops water enrichment and aquatic readiness in children ages 6 months to 3 years. This category focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water. Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that maintain good health, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity. Our Swim Program philosophy believes in the use of bubbles (flotation devices) to help children gradually become accustomed to the water. We remove the bubbles periodically throughout the program to test your child s buoyancy and to build confidence. If you have questions about the appropriate level for your child, please schedule an evaluation with us. Due to class consistency and ratios, we do not offer make-up swim lessons (including closures due to weather). For more information about our Aquatics program, please contact Lisa Slover at lslover@somersetcountyymca.org. 6 Swim Lesson Wait List If your child is placed on the wait list for a group swim lesson, you will be contacted directly via or phone if a space becomes available. We will try our best to accommodate your request for a lesson. In most instances, a current participant must drop out of the class for a space to become available. In some cases, depending on the level and assistant availability, we can add an assistant to increase the ratio. Priority is given to individuals who are not currently registered in a class so that we can accommodate as many children as possible. Since we have a set number of lanes, we typically cannot open one class without cancelling another class with low enrollment. We will take participants off the waiting list through the 4th or 5th week of a session. Class Cancellation Classes my be canceled due to low enrollment. In these cases, you will be contacted by the Aquatics Director. Private Lessons Private lessons provide personal instruction in the pool. To register, please complete a Private Swim Lesson form, which is available at the Y s Welcome Center. Open to Hillsborough YMCA members. For more information, please contact Lisa Slover at lslover@somersetcountyymca.org. Masters Swim The U.S. Masters Swimming program appropriately challenges beginner to competitive swimmers, age 18+, by improving stroke technique. Whether you are a traditional competitive masters swimmer, an open water swimmer, a triathlete, or you just want to swim for fun, this program is for you! The workouts will be coached by Dave Lockhart, certified Level 1 and 2; Mark Menter, Jerry Katz, and Adele Morgan certified Level 1, 2 and 3 U.S. Masters Swimming coaches. Family & Open Swim Throughout the year, Family and Open Swims help to deepen family connections and to give members a sense of belonging. Please visit /schedules for our family and open swim times. Accessibility Each of our pools has a handicap accessible lift so those with limited mobility can enjoy the therapeutic qualities of water.
