1 July 2013 City of Gainesville Volume 1: Issue 11 Splash News One Fantastic Month! The Frances Meadows Aquatic Center has held some of the area s finest swim competitions and this summer is shaping up to add even more! The Aquatic Center will be hosting the Georgia Recreation And Parks Association (GRPA) District 7 Swim Meet again this year and for the first time, has the honor of hosting the GRPA State Meet. The District 7 Swim Meet serves as the qualification for the GRPA State Meet. Swimmers must be one of the top three finishers in an event to qualify for the state meet. Also during the month, Frances Meadows will be hosting part of the North Georgia Swim League (NGSL) League Championship Meet. As this meet has really grown in size, it is split between two venues: Frances Meadows Aquatic Center and the Ruby C. Fulbright Aquatic Center in Clarkesville. Swimmers who have competed in at least one of the three sanctioned meets sponsored by the North Georgia Swim League, will be eligible to enter the NGSL League Championship Swim Meet. Then there are the USA Swimming Long Course Championships that are swum as two separate meets depending on age, the 14 & Under State Championship and the Senior State Championships. In order to be eligible to compete in either of these two meets, each swimmer must have competed in a USA sanctioned long course meet and met or exceeded the minimum qualifying times. Many swimmers, numbering in the hundreds, from all parts of Georgia will be participating in these meets! These meets will provide many teams with swimmers in the qualification bubble - that opportunity to race and possibly win by mere tenths of seconds. We wish all swimmers the best of luck!!

3 C/O 2014 Paul Powers Commits Early to Michigan ~Braden Keith of Swim Swam Just as soon as the high school class of 2013 is about wrapped up in their college commitments, it s already time for the class of 2014 to get underway. Georgian Paul Powers has made an early verbal commitment to the defending men s NCAA Champions the University of Michigan, two weeks shy of the opening of the free contact period. Powers is the Georgia High school state champion and record holder in both the 50 & 100 yard free. He has been 19.9 in the 50 and 43.9 in the 100, and became the third American in history to dip under 44 seconds at only 16 years old. In other races, Powers has been a 1:39.86 in the 200 yard free and 50.1 s in both the 100 yard fly and the 100 yard back. In long course, his best 50 is 23.4 and his best 100 is Powers, who swims for North Hall High School in Gainesville, Georgia, and the Splash Aquatic Club, said I like Coach Bottom s approach to sprint training and his strength and conditioning team. Conner Jaeger and Sean Ryan walked with me through the Engineering school and those guys are a blast. Serious, but very funny. I could really relate to their interest in academic rigor and the highest level of swimming. One of the reasons I like Michigan was because of the engineering program, which is one of the best in the country. Also, from the conversations I had with the team, I can see that Coach Bottom really respects his athletes and cares about them as individuals first. He is coached by Andy Deichert, formerly of the Race Club, and former elite level swimmer Sabir Muhammad, giving him a great mentorship structure. I think very highly of the Michigan program because of Mike Bottom s out of the box training methods, and style of teaching, which fits well with Paul being an athlete first, Deichert said of his former Race Club colleague Bottom. Paul is a very intelligent swimmer who thrives on continuous analysis and feedback in order to learn better ways of achieving a more proficient stroke, which also fits well with the Michigan coaching style. Powers has also played on the basketball team at North Hall, speaking to his overall athleticism. Bottom has had great success with turning those athletes into monumental sprinters and especially relay contributors. This addition will greatly increase the rebuilding process for the Wolverines, who didn t graduate a ton of relay points, but did lose a lot of really important relay legs. Powers is among the top 5 American sprinters in the class (that includes Brett Ringgold, Ryan Held, Caeleb Dressel, and Edward Kim)

4 Help Needed! We have the honor of hosting the State GRPA Class A Swim Meet this summer on July As you can imagine, this is a huge undertaking and will take numerous volunteers to make it a success. This is a huge opportunity for our team and will have a great economic impact to our community. We are looking for: 1. Volunteers A pool of volunteers is being formed now to assist in the following areas: Welcome Party, Meet Set-up, Event Set-up, Awards, Runners, Hospitality, Meet management, Parking, Meet Clean-up, Results Posting, Registrations and Floaters. If you, your family and/or a group you are involved in is looking for an opportunity to volunteer this is it! If you are interested in volunteering, contact Meghan Hill. 2. 7 In observance of Independence Day, we will not be having practice on Thursday, July 4th. Swim Team Uniform Requirement: For any swim meet that you are representing SAC, you are REQUIRED to wear at least the SAC Swim Cap. You are strongly encouraged to wear SAC swimsuits. Swimmers must purchase their own equipment to include: fins, goggles, kickboard, pull buoy and snorkel. SAC has a very limited supply of equipment that we utilize for swimmers who are trying out the team and are new to swimming. If your swimmer has committed to the team, then it is now time to purchase their own equipment for their individual usage. Several swimmers have not yet paid for your USA Swimming Registration. Swimmers cannot participate in sanctioned USA Swim Meets unless they have a USA Swimming Registration Number.
