ISB Mourns the Passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great It is with the utmost sadness that we learned of the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great. His Majesty is highly revered in Thailand and the world over for his commitment to Thailand and the Thai people, to a better world, to the arts and sciences, to education, and to those less fortunate. His Majesty s passing is deeply felt by us all. The world has lost a most beloved, revered and respected leader. International School Bangkok joins the Thai people in grieving for His Majesty and celebrating the tremendous accomplishments and great personal attributes of the world s longest serving monarch.

Player Profiles 1. Name and grade and years playing tennis? My name is Carole Lefeuvre and I am in grade What do you like most about playing tennis? I like playing tennis because I like that the match isn't rehearsed, you don't know what's going to happen. What I like most about tennis is that you get a second, even third and fourth chance. For example when your opponent is winning and has the advantage in a deuce but you win the following point the score goes back to deuce and you redeemed yourself and now you can win the match. In a lot of sports you make one error and it messes everything up 3. How did you start playing tennis? I started playing tennis when I was very young but it had never been my number 1 sport, neither a sport that took up most of my time until this year. 4. What is your favorite subject in school? Competitive: Panther Elite Coaches Motivation: Carole has really shown a commitment to tennis this year. She never gives up and she is able to focus on the court. Probably Social Studies because I learn more about this world and its problems so then after class I m always more aware of what I m doing. 5. What other sports or activities do you do? Besides tennis I also play soccer and I swim. I enjoy painting and clay work a lot and academic competitions as well. 6. Where have you lived so far in your life? I was born in Belgium and moved to Washington DC when I had just started walking, then I move back to Belgium and now I'm in Thailand. 7. What makes a good tennis coach? A great coach is one that provides a strategy for you based on your strengths and weaknesses. A good coach should always observe a player's weakness and throughout the lessons the coach builds up a player s capability in that area. 8. What is your favorite song and who is the artist/band? My favorite song is lock me up from the cab. 9. What makes a good friend? I believe that a good friend is one that doesn't force you into things and one that doesn't judge you. It is a person you want to be around because this person makes you happy and makes you laugh. 4

Player Profiles 1. Name, grade and years playing tennis. Alicja Mazurkiewicz, grade 5, playing tennis since I arrived in Thailand in July last year. 2. What do you like most about playing tennis? I like solving math problems and learning new things. 5. What other sports or activities do you do? I also do gymnastics and I like to bike. 6. Where have you lived so far in your life? I was born in America and I have lived there all my life until last year when I came to Thailand with my Mom & Dad. 7. What makes a good tennis coach? A good coach makes learning tennis fun and gives advice on what to do to play better. 8. What is your favorite song and the artist/band? I like to listen to different kinds of music. I don t really have a favorite song or artist. Learn-to-Play: Grade 3-5 Coaches Motivation: Alicja was chosen because of her willingness to learn. She listens well and tries all the techniques we teach. 9. What makes a good friend? A good friend makes you laugh and is always nice to you no matter what. 7 By Kerstin Wild & Roong Mallikamas U13 BISAC - Boys What a great event! Even the weather was on our side. We had only one hour to wait and all rain stopped. Exactly 9.00am, the boys started their tournament! This year we had the fortune to have two teams starting the U13 Boys BISAC finals on Oct 8th, Team A and Team B! Team A: Ken, Samuel in Singles; Victor and Hiroki, Doubles; Andreas as sub. Team B: Teetouch, Mee, Singles; Aurelio and Chanon, Doubles; Chach as sub. 10 enthusiastic boys with coach Net and coach Wit. Team A won their two Singles and their Double matches in the first encounter. After that, they had to play against Shrewsbury International School. One of the favorites on this tournament! During these matches, ISB boys show their strength and how they improved compared by last year. They lost their matches really close and were fighting a lot. It was a pleasure to watch them and to see the fair play and their willing to go for it. These matches made them incredibly tired and unfortunately then they lost against Harrows International School as they were playing for the third place. So ISB Boys did the 4 th place which was really awesome. To see them working as a team and motivating each other and to have fun, this was remarkable. They really grow together during their Tennis BISAC time. Let s go Panthers, let s go!!! Team B started the day by helping Coach Wit sweep water out of the courts and could start warm up by 8:15. Our team was in Pool C with BPS C and HIS B, while Pool D had BPS B, NIST B and ICS B. Our first match was against BPS C, with Teetouch and Mee playing singles while Lio and Non teamed up for doubles. The games were very exciting and pretty close, especially Teetouch s that went into a tie break. Unfortunately, we lost 3-0. Our second match was against HIS B. Teetouch and Mee played singles again, while Chad and Non played doubles. This time we played even better than in the morning. Mee sailed through with a final score of 6-0, Chad and Non finished with a 6-3 victory, and Teetouch won a tie break. All boys were proud of themselves, and it was a great day. 7

U13 BISAC - Girls By Pajarachuta Harinsuit Our ISB Girls Team did great this past Saturday for U13 BISAC Girls Final. We got third place (with Bronze medal) as we won against Harrow International School. The match started on time as the weather was nice throughout the whole match. We had 4 girls playing for U13 BISAC Finals. Carole and Renata playing single, and Min and Paritta playing doubles. Each player had to play at least five matches, they were tired but they didn t give up. They watched their teammates played against other schools and gave support at the end of each game. Coach Noop was always there to support our girls team, she guided them on what they should do. This past Saturday was Coach Noop s Birthday so Third Place at BISAC was a great Birthday gift for her. Happy Birthday Coach Noop! Your school is proud of you girls! Tennis Tidbits Imagine yourself or your child on the tennis court in the middle of a tournament, it is 3 pm, tropical heat and humidity, you got up at 5:30, probably haven t eaten a proper lunch or drunk enough water. It is your final qualifying round before the semi-finals. How easy is it for you or your child to really focus, feel relaxed and in the flow of his/her tennis game? How difficult is it to not judge yourself and start to analyze your game? What can you do in order to excel at the inner game of tennis? That is the subject of the classic book titled, The Inner Game of Tennis: The Ultimate Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Performance, by W. Timothy Gallwey. The book is not new, but stands the test of time and is as relevant today as it was when it was originally published. In fact, it may even be more easily understood now, given the advances in neuroscience and the acceptance of the role that our minds play in sports in the interim. (cont p 11) 8

Panther Tennis Parent Committee Dear All, Our maiden U9 Tournament was understandably postponed over the weekend, but we want to thank all the parents who had volunteered to bring healthy snacks, act as photographers and even search for sponsors. We also want to thank Coach Noop & team for their tremendous organization skills in putting the tournament together, which we will ask them to repeat again when the timing is appropriate. (cont from p7) Tennis Tidbits The author introduces the idea of Self 1 and Self 2. He describes Self 1 as the teller who tells itself what to do. Self 2 is the doer, the one listening to Self 1. Self 1 analyzes, instructs, gives orders, judges and undermines Self 2 s self-confidence. Self 1 doesn t trust Self 2. Self 2 includes the unconscious mind, the nervous system and hears everything. After hitting the ball firmly once, it knows forever how to repeat this. Self 2 is where our automatic responses are. The author discusses how to use this knowledge to learn to quiet Self 1 and learn to trust Self 2. To think less, judge oneself less and to trust Self 2. He states that what usually happens is that self-judgment becomes self-fulfilling prophecy. When a player lets self-judgment go, trust develops between Self 1 and Self 2 and only then can a player develop self-confidence, the magic ingredient for top performance on the tennis court. Find the book here During the past two weeks, we have been working with Bob to finalize and formally engage our tennis advisor, Surayud (Art) Chotiyarnwong who started early last week observing our program. Art looks forward to implementing the specific deliverables that we have all agreed on. Look for new features and upgrades in the Panther Tennis program soon! Good to Know! Oct and Oct Panther Tennis is on break and group classes are cancelled. Nov Panther Tennis will move to the uncovered courts near Field D, as Panther Swim Fest will be going on.
