2 BE Regional Partnerships' Manager, Rhiannon Smith, gave a thoroughly interesting presentation on the new opportunities for clubs: click this link for a copy. This and the other documents from the meeting will appear in due course on the About Us section of the website Monk s Walk School won the bronze medal at the National Schools Championships Grand final To put the Monk's Walk school's team's achievement in context 6,300 school badminton teams from over 1,500 secondary and middle schools from right across England competed this year, with over 31,000 school children in years 7,8,9 and swinging a badminton racket in competition. So extremely, Well Done! Monks Walk Team! See the write up of the Regional Round, below. Results of the 98 th All England Seniors Badminton Championships at Herts Sports Village 11 th -13 th 11th - 13th April international stars played at Herts Sports Village. And watching was Free! RESULTS! Herts Schools at Regional Final of Center Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships Players from four schools in Herts travelled to Cambridge on 18 March to compete against schools from Essex, Beds, Cambs, Norfolk and Suffolk for a place in the National Finals. Representing Hertfordshire were: 2

3 Under 16 Boys Watford Grammar School for Boys Under 14 Boys Monk s Walk School (Welwyn Garden City) Under 16 Girls Queenwood School (Brookmans Park) Under 14 Girls Sir John Lawes School (Harpenden) There was a good mix of county and non-county players from all the schools, resulting in lots of hard fought games. All four Herts schools did well to reach the semi-finals, but, despite their best efforts, three of the four schools had their hopes of a winning medal dashed at that stage. The Monk s Walk boys were delighted to secure a place in the U14 final by beating Davenant School from Essex 5-0 in the semis. Having not dropped a game on their way to the final, they were feeling positive but not overly confident, knowing that the opposing team from Thorpe St Andrew School in Norfolk had also won their semi-final match 5-0. However, the Monk s Walk boys showed great determination in securing a 3-2 victory after some nail-biting games. So, for the second year running the Monk s Walk School team (comprising Chris Adey, Matthew Harden, Jack Kimber, Nima Karshenas and Calum Wilson) will represent the Eastern Region at the Grand Final taking place at Center Parcs, Sherwood Forest on 10/11 May. English National Under 19 Badminton Championships 2014 The National Championships were held over the weekend 14 th to 16 th February 2014 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The current holders of the National 17 title from March 2013 they had now moved up an age group to take on the best under 19 s in the Country. The left handed duo played some excellent badminton to reach the Final to play the number 1 seeds Ben Lane from Devon and his partner Sean Vendy from Buckinghamshire. A three game final that could have gone either way, saw the number 1 seeds triumph , 17-21, In the early rounds Widdicombe & Pedersen had beaten: Harry Brewis & Andrew Brockie (Oxon) 21-8, 21-7: James Farmer (Yorkshire) & Harrison Simcock (Bucks) 21-18, A semi-final win over number 2 seeds Michael Roe (Cheshire) & Conor Bambrick (Herts) 10-21, 21-19, took the pair into the final. 7 The draw and seeding s will be available later this week on the Badminton England web site: Paul Widdicombe Chairman of Selectors Hertfordshire Badminton Association Badminton England are launching SmashUp! and require Activators to run the sessions Are you enthusiastic, engaging and know how to get the very best out of young people that think badminton is "old fashioned"? If yes then step forward. SmashUp! is your chance to 'inspire a generation': SmashUp! is a modern mix of school mates, bassline pumping music and big hitting badminton challenges that makes after school badminton court time a social hub. It's a dynamic place where the usual rules don't apply and where year old pupils define the boundaries of how they build their own badminton experiences on court. Great article in School Sport Magazine, see right This course will enable you tocoordinate and deliver the activities associated with running high quality, successful after-school badminton sessions. By attending this course you will then join the pool of 'endorsed activators where opportunities may arise for you to work in local schools and community groups. The recommended rate of pay for an Activator delivering a Smash Up session within a school/community setting is 15 an hour Course Details:- Date: Tuesday 18 th February Time: 13:00-17:00 Venue: Herts Sports Village, Herts Uni, Hatfield, AL10 9EU Cost: 15 How to book:- This course is part of Herts Sport Partnerships Coach education week, click this link to book online Kind regards, Rhiannon Smith Partnerships Manager (London & East), BADMINTON England Herts Inter-schools Games County Final 30 Secondary schools participated in the county finals, 3rd December, at Herts Sports Village. Wodson Park Badminton Trophy As part of the MOVE WEEK initiative and funded via Active East Herts, a Badminton Tournament was held at Wodson Park Leisure Centre Ware, Sunday 13th October

9 The tournament, was a great success. Enjoyed by all, and the spectators were treated to some excellent games, especially in the finals. Several entrants were regular tournament players, but around half were not and it was encouraging to see them rise to the challenge. Feedback has been so positive..."the atmosphere was lovely everyone got on so well", with many people keen to be involved in the next tournament! The Results: Draw Winners Runners Up Plate Winners Mens Singles Tom Hall Brett Maisey Richard Emes Mens Doubles Shaun McKnight/Brett Maisey Tim Nicholls/Stephen Buttall Tom Hall/Ed Ali Mixed Doubles Tom Hall/Heidi Lawrence Doug Clark/Becca Watson Ed Ali/Nadine Davies Ladies Fiona Forth/Heidi Lawrence Nadine Davies/Lynda Suckling Doubles Ladies Singles Heidi Lawrence Jackie Ward Nadine Davies Boys Singles Freddie Clark Brett Maisey Shaun McKnight Boys Doubles Shaun McKnight/Brett Maisey Toby Goddard/Freddie Clark Ryan Forth/Leon OConnor Girls Singles Olivia Clark Charlotte Powell Brett Maisey started out in great form, taking the titles in both the Mens and Boys Doubles with his partner Shaun McKnight, but after losing in a really tough final to Tom Hall in the Men's Singles he just didn't have the stamina to beat a very steady and focussed Freddie Clark in the Boys Singles Finals. The photo shows Junior entrants Freddie Clark: Boys Singles Medal Winner, Olivia Clark: Girls Singles Medal Winner and Ryan Forth, who was unlucky to come up against Brett Maisey in earlier rounds of both the Mens and Boys Singles, but he was no pushover and played two very hard fought games. A Salver engraved with the names of all the winners will soon be Ceri Why, 15th October 2013 HERTS COUNTY BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 The County (Closed) Championship 2013 were held at Birchwood Leisure Centre in Hatfield on 22 nd & 29 th September Players were keen to impress the County Selectors in the final trials to gain places in the Inter County Championship teams for 2013/14. The Men s Singles took place on Saturday 22 nd and was dominated by players from Ware Badminton Club with three of the four Semi Finalists. Conor Bambrick (18) made his 9

10 way to the Final with a hard fought win over Hertford s James Reynolds (23) in three gruelling games. Ware stalwart Andy Walden (36) got the better of up and coming Matthew Widdicombe (17) in the second semifinal. The Final was perhaps a game too far for Walden who succumbed to Bambrick to take the County title for the first time. The men s doubles was dominated by the Ware club with all four finalist coming from the Wodson Park based club. Conor Bambrick added a second county title partnering current under 17 national doubles champion Widdicombe to an impressive straight games win over Walden and his regular partner Chris Holt (36): see final points on YouTube. Walden however gained revenge in the mixed doubles partnering club mate Kat Young (27) to victory over Bambrick & Austin. The ladies title went the way of veteran Internationals Liz Austin, Redbourn, (46) & Caroline Hale, Welwyn Garden City, (45) who swept all side to deprive Ware of a clean sweep of titles. Click here for pdf of all results. The Inter County Championship season commences on 13 th October with Hertfordshire fielding three teams across the seven divisions that make up the national league. The first team are in the top flight along with nine other counties. The second and third teams will compete in divisions two & three.
