3 RIO Under 18 Team Tournament January 2017 Rees Clarke & Molly Goode Rio was certainly an amazing weekend that we will all remember and not just because of the badminton! We left bright and early Saturday morning on the 6:30 train from Stevenage, and our spirits were high. It was chilly, but Dave generously bought us all a hot chocolate to keep our energy up. On the train, we caught up on some sleep and mentally prepared for the long day of badminton ahead. We reached York at about 9 and we were greeted with rain and cold wind. We arrived at the sports hall excited and raring to go. We were informed that Surrey would be our first match. We knew this would be our hardest match but we gave it everything, and it was shown in the score. Although we lost, we were proud of the final score as there were lots of close games. Chris and Steven played an amazing game of doubles which they won with the great support of the team. Also, Monique played an exhausting game of singles that she narrowly lost in the third set 21-19, but she played exceptionally well and was unlucky with the result. Laura also played a hard game of singles and came out with a great result. Our next match was Yorkshire. We were now all warmed up and feeling positive about this match. We won this one quite comfortably, and it gave us the confidence and motivation to give our last match everything. Our match against Leicestershire was the last on court for the day and we successfully defeated them with great play, sheer determination and lots of encouragement. Laura played a great game of singles that went to three, that we all enjoyed watching. Kyle also played a gripping game of singles, but narrowly lost it, although he played very well. Exhausted but happy, the Herts team walked to the hotel to be fed and watered. We all enjoyed a nice roast dinner, and we went back to our room to play some cards. We all strutted our stuff at the disco, and we even learnt some new moves from the coaches! After a long night of dancing, making friends, and becoming closer as a team we headed off to bed to revive ourselves for the next day. Sunday morning and a full English breakfast did its best to wake us up, then it was back to the sports hall with our cases and bags. We were now playing in a group for positions 1-4. Our first match was against Warwickshire, which we unfortunately lost after some exciting games and great performances however. Next we faced Lancashire, the match which would decide whether we finished 3 rd or 4 th in the whole tournament. We started well and beat them comfortably, meaning the overall end result was a fantastic 3 rd place. Three places higher than last year! Presentations followed with Steven winning the award for most sporting boy of the tournament. Well done to Steven, a well-deserved award. We then returned by train back to Stevenage on Sunday evening, shattered (with Jason and Steven even having a nap on the floor of the train), but delighted with our bronze medals. A brilliant weekend! A big thank you to the coaches, Becky, Kelly and Dave. Team: Christopher Adey, Laura Anderson, Cameron Bannister, Olivia Clark, Rees Clarke, Steven Elliot, Molly Goode, Jason Haley, Kyle Hoyt, Monique Maisie, Keya Patani and Abbie Smith. Page 3

4 HSBA Tournament 13th November 2016 It was good to see a reasonable turnout for our new event, the U18 B singles. There were eight contenders in both the boys and girls event, and the standard of competition was very impressive. In the Girls competition Gretchen Kwong (Queenswood), won the main event by beating fellow school mate Lia Di Gesaro, and the plate event was won by Charmaine Ng (Queenswood). The Boys event winner was Charlie Corke (Woodhouse College) with a win over Rushil Hora (Habs) and the plate event was won by Harry Kutner (John Warner). Later the U15 County Championship took place with 57 players in contention. The BIG news of the day was Cameron Bannisters hat trick of three titles, closely followed by Lavigne Leung with two. Here is a roundup of the results. U15 Mixed Doubles 1st place Cameron Bannister (Ashlyns) & Lavigne Leung (Owens) 2nd place (Hemel Hempstead) & Leona Lee (Hitchin Girls) 3rd place Harry Goode (Richard Hale) & Paankhuri Bhatia (Dr Challoners) U15 Boys Singles Main event; Winner Cameron Bannister r/up Bobrowski (JFK) U15 Boys singles Plate event; Winner Keshitha De Silva (Richard Hale) r/up Bruce Yao (Hitchin Boys) U15 Girls Singles Main event; Winner Paankhuri Bhatia r/up Leona Lee U15 Girls singles Plate event; Winner Vihini Ragalage r/up Louise Leung (Loreto) U15 Boys Doubles Main event; Winners Cameron Bannister & Harry Goode r/up Toby Goddard (Richard Hale) & U15 Boys Doubles Plate event; Winners Ethan Barnes (Highfield) & Bruce Yao U15 Girls Doubles 1st place Lavigne Leung & Leona Lee 2nd place Elizabeth Bratton (Sir John Laws) & Chloe Connolly (Knights Templar) 3rd place Khadijah Hasan (Watford Gr) & Vihini Ragalage (Watford Gr) HSBA Tournament 20th November 2016 Firstly a HUGE thank you to Debbie Clarke who helped on the desk during this tournament (and probably wished she hadn t volunteered), her unflappable demeanour was a BIG help. The day started with the U13 B singles. The Boys main event was won with ease by Will Davis (Hitchin Boys), runner up Arin Hattrell (Chancellors), and the Plate event by Sai Thokala (Habs). In the Girls competition, Shiami Thayaparan (Ashwell) won the main event with a victory over Kara Harvey Hill (Goffs), and the Plate event winner was Lani Shah (St Albans HS). Later in the day the U11 Boys singles started followed by the Girls event and the corresponding Doubles events. U11 Boys Singles Main event; Winner James Joseph (Alban Wood) r/up Charlie (Ralph Sadleir) U11 Boys singles Plate event; winner Akshith Katuri (Hartsfield) r/up Ray Chen (Abbotts Langley) U11 Girls singles Main event; Winner Mabel Reid (Heath Mount) r/up Shiami Thayaparan U11 Girls singles Plate event; Winner Naomi Latter (Holy Family WGC) r/up Maggie Moylan (Creswick) U11 Boys Doubles Main event; Winners James Joseph & Charlie r/up Oliver & William Teale (Cassiobury) U11 Boys Doubles Plate event; Winners Ben Hahn (Lemsford)b & Lazar Tatral (Harwood Hill) r/up Ray Chen & Ganushan Jeevanathan (Coated Way) U11 Girls doubles 1st Mabel Reid & Emily Ho (Lordship Farm) 2nd Isabelle Lee (Ladbrooke) & Katie Savage (Manland) 3rd Tamsin Bisseker (Beechwood Park) & Mia Harvey-Hill (Fairfield)HSBA tournaments 2016/17 Page 4

5 Hertfordshire Junior League match day John Stobo A reduced number of teams contested this season s instalment of the Junior League at Birchwood Leisure Centre on Sunday March 19 th, but the competition was as fierce as last season as youngsters from Hertsmere, St Albans, Welwyn Hatfield, East Hertfordshire and North Hertfordshire joined battle for the winners shield. This year the League was played at the Under 14 age group, two years younger than last season, and it was a great opportunity for young players from outside the County squad to gain experience of competitive badminton, in many cases their first such experience. Matches comprised a game in each of the five events: girls singles and doubles, boys singles and doubles and mixed doubles, and many games were closely contested, with a score of in one game and no fewer than five others ending However, as the afternoon s play progressed the North Herts team gradually asserted themselves over a succession of opponents, winning all their matches and thereby taking the shield from Hertsmere, last season s winners. Three teams challenged for the silver and bronze medal positions, each recording two matches won and two lost, and the tournament organisers were obliged to pore over the small print of the League rules to establish that St Albans were fourth, by reason of having won two games fewer, while East Herts and Welwyn Hatfield, with 11 games won apiece, were separated only by East Herts having won the match between them, thus claiming silver medals for their team members. As winners, North Herts go forward to represent the Hertfordshire League at the national inter-league finals being held at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes over the weekend of May 20 th -21 st, and we wish them well at that event. The success of Sunday s event was due to a lot of effort by team managers Ken Winchester, Dan Glynn, Mike Newlove, Doug Clark and Bob Green, to whom many thanks are due; likewise to Barbara Lewczynska and Beverley Stobo who collated the results during the afternoons play and completed flawlessly the task of calculating the final positions in what was a very closely fought competition. 6 ICT 2017 Report Phil Westwood How Herts came up trumps, but almost didn t ICT is the pinnacle of the county junior badminton year. Character building is an over-used phrase, but not in this case. Thirty-five counties in an intense cauldron of noise and endeavour with no hiding places, vying, if not for top dog, because in recent years Bucks have made that their own, certainly for 'bragging rights' over neighbours and old adversaries, and that old fashioned simple thing of testing oneself in great competition. Of necessity traditionally it has been played over at least three venues in and around Nottingham University. This year, finally, it was able to take place under one roof: the new David Ross Sports Village. Twenty courts divided into four halls, with a seating gallery running the full length. Local counties and the stronger ones are always well supported and Herts this year played their part. A large contingent of parental support over the first two days witnessed no less than seven matches and brought much vital, enthusiastic, and yes very loud, vocal support, adding to the incessant cacophony of drums and air horns, shrieks and bellows from players down in the arena. But this event is primarily about the teams and the players, so this is how the four days unfolded for Herts. The first day saw Herts facing Bucks, once again in a class of their own; but, critically, also Notts. The shape of the draw meant that a defeat against Notts would send us into the lower reaches with a maximum placing of 19th. To put that in perspective, Herts has been that low only once in the last 25 years. Our reputation was on the line, and it was touch and go as old hands and players new to the event found their feet. Playing Notts first, we were teetering at 3-5 down, facing that drop before we had barely begun, needing both the final games to survive. But Molly/Abbie and Laura/Monique delivered both to claw back the match score to 5-5, and we had won on games. Heart-stopping. We were still in the hunt. After the relief, the reality; defeat to Bucks with only Cameron/Molly picking up a game. The final match against Gloucs was a welcome 10-0 to renew the players self-belief. So we were through to the top half of the draw only to land in a group of five, headed by Yorks, no longer the very top dogs but still major players. In fact Herts would gain a creditable 4-6 against Yorks. And once again, after close fought, nerve-shredding, but in the end handsome, 8-2 wins against Lancs and Leics, and finding out the hard way that Derbys were not the pushovers that their other scores had suggested, we emerged group second, to claim a third round fight for positions 5 to 8. It is fair to say that after facing the cliff edge on the first day, this turn around took a while to sink in. It had been a long, long day of four games, starting at 9am and finishing at 10:30pm, with another early start in prospect, but even better was to come. The final group comprised Leinster, a first round group top seed, always solid; old foes Essex, who had somewhat controversially beaten' Herts in the Shires League; and an emergent Devon side. A mountain to climb. But slowly and surely climb it we did; losing a tight game against Leinster, and rolling over Essex - settling that recent score in a very determined manner. This left a must-win match against Devon for the final day. The tension was palpable because of what hung on the result. The match was far closer than the scoreline suggests and always seemed to be in the balance. In the end Herts ran out 7-3 winners to ensure 6th place, behind Leinster, group winners elect. But wait. Leinster and Essex were still on court in an epic battle. It then dawned that an Essex win would allow Herts possibly to 'steal' what had been assumed was Leinster's 5th place and trophy. And we had the unheard of situation of Herts cheering Essex. And win it Essex did, in the third end of the last game. How close was that! Then came a nervy wait. And when the official computer had completed its deliberations, it duly showed Herts and Leinster 17 rubbers apiece, which we knew, but wonder of wonders Herts was ahead on games, 40 to 36. Cheers Essex! An amazing but thoroughly deserved 5th place, and the silver platter awarded to prove it. I have seen a good number of Herts performances here, each special in its own way, over the years - it regularly lifts the players confounding their seeding - but this ranks amongst the best, not least because no one really expected it even as it unfolded. What diffidence. Brilliant. With many close matches every player contributed a vital win or vital points, at some stage. So, in alphabetical order, congratulations to Abbie, Cameron, Chris, Keya, Laura, Molly, Monique, Rees, Steven and Tommy (and not to forget Becky, Kelly and Mike.) Page 6
