COMPASS / PACING GAME

1 COMPASS / PACING GAME This is a fairly simple game to help scouts practice the basics of using a compass and pacing. Equipment needed: 200 square level area to play; 100 foot long tape or a rope with feet marked (shop around, I found a 100 tape for less that I could have gotten the materials to make one); A printout of this file, cut out the cards on the last five pages (if you run out, get more at A compass (more than one can play at a time, have each scout bring his own). Game Setup: In an open, level area, lay out the rope or tape due north, 0 feet at the south end. Have each scout walk the length of the tape, counting his paces to establish his standard pace (better if done at least two times to get an average). Give each scout a few cards (will depend how much time you want to spend). Each scout should go along the first bearing for the distance shown. The second bearing and distance should take him back to the tape where he can record the foot that he ends up closest to. Once the scouts have learned the technique, split into two-man teams. One scout should stay at the starting point to give direction while the other paces out the distance. Once the pacing scout has reached the distance, the direction scout should put him on line. The pacing scout can check the azimuth back to the direction scout as a double check for direction. The direction scout should then pace to the pacing scout as a double check for distance. This way they can see the difference in accuracy of an individual compared to when they work as a team. Scoring: Subtract the scouts recorded end points from the correct end points, add up the misses, low score wins. Be sure to let the scouts know that compass and pacing is not an exact form of measuring and that perfect scores are as much luck as skill. The azimuths, distances and answer sheets were calculated using a CADD program, double checked with a COGO program, and are accurate to within one foot if your baseline is oriented to north properly.
