2 President s Letter Tim Russell Dear Fellow Tennis Enthusiasts! Energy abounds within the tennis community, nationally and within our Southwest Section. The USTA, working with partners in the tennis industry, has unveiled grand new plans to grow our sport. Visit TennisWelcomeCenter.com, keep your eyes and ears open for the awesome new U.S. Open Series, and look out for the new high-profile tennis marketing campaign, which features Daisy Fuentes, Roy Jones, Mike Wallace, and Jeff Gordon, promoting the fun and physical benefits of our sport. Know that our newly constituted Southwest Section committees are hard at work developing and implementing action plans to reach the goals in our updated sectional strategic plan to grow the game and serve your needs. The Section is supporting many exciting ventures through our grants and scholarships programs. Know that we are seeking ways to improve our current programs and develop new offerings. For example, our Section s competitive junior players are battling this year with a new Points Per Round system and exciting multi-cultural initiatives are on the horizon. The national USTA goal is 30 by 2010 to see that we have 30 million Americans playing tennis by the year Do your part! Play regularly. Join a league, or another league. Enter a tournament, or more tournaments. Take a lesson or clinic, or more lessons and clinics. Invite a friend to start playing. Take them to the court and introduce them to the sport yourself. Give them one of your extra racquets. Donate your old racquet to an After School program. Buy a new racquet. Become a tennis volunteer. Get involved with your local Community Tennis Association. Assist with Youth Team Tennis. Start a middle school tennis program. Buy a USTA membership for a junior player. Spread the word! For many of us tennis never left the limelight. For others, tennis is making a comeback. For still others, they are just discovering the joys of tennis. One thing is certain much is happening in the world of tennis and in the Southwest Section. Let us hear from you, should you have questions, concerns, or suggestions. Now, get out to the court... and PLAY! Cheers, Tim Russell President, USTA Southwest Section EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, Carol Marting USA Tennis Month celebrated the grand kick-off of the most comprehensive outreach ever attempted to increase tennis participation. Every facet of the tennis industry including manufacturers, teaching professionals, and the USTA have partnered to ensure a great start for over 3,700 Tennis Welcome Centers that are ready to offer introductory tennis programs with a smile. The plan is to barrage the airwaves and print media with promotions about the benefits of tennis, along with lots of local publicity. Here in the Southwest Section, we have 88 Tennis Welcome Centers signed up. 8-page advertising inserts appeared in 60,000 issues of the Albuquerque Journal in May and 60,000 more will appear in the Arizona Republic in September. The reader is invited to find out where they can "Learn to Play Tennis... Fast!" by visiting Clubs and facilities will be offering introductory programs for new and returning players and many special events will be taking place. To kick-start local publicity and get new programs started for the new players expected from the Tennis Welcome Centers, the Southwest Section awarded grant funds of over $44,000 to local USTA organizations and Community Tennis Associations, Colleges, Program Leaders and Park and Recreation Departments. Tennis Awareness Days, Carnivals, Rock n Rallies and many other special events will be taking place in cities throughout the Southwest. The excitement of this great initiative is dimmed somewhat in Arizona, as it is difficult to get newspaper coverage for our great sport of tennis and while Cox Communication has an agreement with The Tennis Channel, it is not aired in Arizona. So, to all our members living in Arizona, please send letters to the Arizona Republic and Cox Cable to let them know you want more and better tennis coverage. *GREAT NEWS - USTA Southwest Section and Head/Penn Racquet Sports continue their partnership in 2004 with Head/Penn sponsoring the Southwest Junior and Senior Closed and Junior Doubles Championships and the Southwest Section Hall of Fame & Awards Banquet. 8 Tennis in your community! Page 8 USTA Southern New Mexico The Southern New Mexico Community Tennis Association (SNM CTA) has been going thru a few changes lately. Dave Walton retired from being the CTA s President and Sally Walton retired from running the Junior Competition/Recreation Programs at the end of They were both very active and instrumental in getting many of the SNM CTA programs running. Jack Saunders was then voted in as the new President for the SNM CTA for The SNM Executive Committee Members currently are: Jack Saunders, President; Ray Rivera, Vice President; Traci Hooker, Treasurer; and Dave Tornblom, Secretary. These officers have been very busy with trying to get the CTA active again. At their first Executive Committee meeting they decided the CTA needed to get communications going again with the tennis public. In order to do this they acquired a new mailing address for the CTA and a new cell phone number. The address is: SNM CTA P.O. Box 2645 Las Cruces, NM The cell phone number is: (505) If anyone wants to get more involved with tennis in the SNM CTA, or wants to know what s happening in the SNM CTA, mail or call the new cell phone number for the SNM CTA. The SNM CTA is also planning on supporting more of the local leagues that are currently running in the SNM. The Las Cruces Tennis Players Association (LCTPA) in the SNM has many events coming up this summer. They will be hosting two non-sanctioned (does not count toward ranking) tennis tournaments. 1) The LCTPA Summer Junior Tennis Tournament, June The junior tournament will cost $13.00 for singles, and $12.00 for doubles. (1 st Round Consolation Format.) Contact person for the Junior tournament is: Judy Harlas (505) ) The Red Hot Chili Mixed Doubles Fourth of July Tennis Tournament, 3-4 July The doubles tournament will cost $20.00 team (LCTPA member), or $30.00 team (non LCTPA member). (Round robin format tournament with player party afterwards.) Contact person for the Mixed Doubles tournament is: Judy Harlas (505) The LCTPA is also hoping to get its tennis ladder to go city-wide making it more competitive and active. Judy Harlas (Board Member of SNM CTA and President of LCTPA) Page, Arizona: Lake Powell Community Tennis Association (LPCTA) receives Tennis in the Parks grant USTA AND NRPA PARTNER FOR TENNIS IN THE PARKS USTA Awards $250,000 to 82 Park & Recreation Agencies Across the Country for Community Tennis Programs The Tennis in the Parks grants support one of three specific needs: hiring a certified pro, hosting and/or attending a USTA Development Coach Workshop, or offering USA Team Tennis for youth and adults including a community event. Parks are a critical component in our efforts to grow the game, said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. This program provides the opportunity for the USTA, NRPA, USPTA and PTR to work together to make tennis more accessible to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds in community parks throughout the country. The LPCTA plans on using the grant to assist in the hiring of certified instructors.

9 Juniors Eric Mitchell Page 9 Dan vs. Peter Sportsmanship, Respect and Good tennis I recently attended the Arizona High School State Championships to watch one of my favorite rivalries in Junior Tennis. Dan Nguyen of Phoenix vs. Peter Zimmer of Tucson. As I sat courtside watching the action, Peter suddenly "lost his lunch" on the court. The official checked on Peter and then turned to Dan to tell him there would be a three-minute injury timeout for Peter (and also to give time to tidy up the court). Dan nodded and said that was fine. Waiting for play to resume, I thought about the respect, friendship and great tennis these two players had. If he had needed it and the rules allowed, Dan probably would have given him an hour. Besides the great rivalry these two have developed over the years (they are 2-2 in their last four meetings leading up to this match), I realized what I liked most about these two players is that they are great guys, on and off the court. Their matches hold no controversy or excuses. They play great clean matches, showing respect for each other, no matter the score or how tight the match is. No line call disputes. No gamesmanship. Not only are they the top two players in the Section, they are also gentleman. This is great! The next day I read an article in the paper about the match, which Dan won in three sets. The quotes from the both were equally as flattering to each other. Even though Peter lost the match and the championship, he is quoted as saying "I got beat by a great player...it's disappointing to lose regardless of the circumstances, but I'm happy for Dan. We're friends and he did a good job." They will probably only meet one more time, if they advance as seeded, at the Southwest Junior Closed this June. I encourage all our Southwest players and parents to take some time and watch these two great sports and champions. Maybe we can all learn something from them. For me, the respect for these two players as great sports will last longer than the memory of what their rankings were. Thank you guys. *Both Dan and Peter are seniors in high school. Dan will be attending Harvard and play on their tennis team. Peter will be attending University of Arizona on a tennis scholarship. News & Notes Want to be in the Know with Junior Tennis?
