Our team is extremely young with 60 percent of our players being comprised of underclassmen, Bucklin head coach Brad Estes said. We are in the process of changing our team culture to operate with great effort, attitude, discipline and attention to detail. Senior running back Isaiah Warnke and senior lineman Braden Draper will both play a crucial part on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Other returners include juniors Jared Scott and James Stout along with sophomore Hunter Hearne. Bucklin finished the season with a 1-8 record last season with their lone win last season was a 56-6 score over Cunningham. Fowler Volleyball The Folwer volleyball team took home fourth place at state last season finishing with a record. Head coach Leann Krier will have some experience returning from last season team but said there will be challenges this season. We won t be very big this year, but the girls make up for the lack of height with their speed, Krier said. I have a lot of quick girls that I can use, especially on the back row. Senior hitter Angie Estrada and juniors Makenzie Dewell and Mallory Bergkamp will bring experience to the 2015 Goldbugs roster. Dewell enters her third season as the starting setter for Fowler. Krier asked her squad prior to the first practice what their goals were for the season and it was pretty clear that the team goal was to get back to where they were the year prior. The overwhelming majority said their biggest goal was to go back to state, Krier said. First year head coach Kraig Westhoff will have junior quarterback Blake Keith returning from last season. Keith could be the key to Fowler s season in As a sophomore in 2014, Keith threw for 818 yard, ran for 450 yards and scored 20 total touchdowns. The Goldbugs will also be returning four players who registered 30 or more tackles last season. Senior Lexi Granados and freshman Paige Harris highlight the girl s squad. Coach Granados is excited for both squads this season. We are an athletic, aggressive team and that has done a great job of being coached while showing great attitude and effort every day at practice, Stithem said. Junior quarterback Nick Ast, junior running back and linebacker Blake Nueschafer and returning offensive linemen Jaylen Pickle and Derek Bogner are some of the key returners for the Blue Jays. to all Area Teams! Stithem is proud of the work his team did during the offseason, saying that weight room attendance was up. The Blue Jays head coach said his team will have a tough test against Holcomb in the season opener and many challenging games throughout the schedule. Holcomb is our first game and that will be a great test to see where we are at as a team, Stithem said. We will be learning lots and rebuilding as we go, Kurth said. Despite the Longhorns quarterback returning from last season s 7-2 season, Hodgeman County will have to count on sophomore Trevor Morgan and senior Taylor James to fill in at the ball carrier positions. Our ball carriers are going to be new but we re working hard, head coach Matt Housman said. There will be a lot of different faces for us. So far work ethic has been great. One of the biggest differences was the Longhorn players being able to play summer volleyball in the Barton County League which helped his squad gain more experience. We have great senior leadership which is one of our greatest strengths, Law said. The seven seniors out this year have really stepped up to be leaders in the weight room during this past summer. We will rely on all of them heavily throughout the season. Law would also like to see his team improve defensively. Luckily for the Rebels, they will have the two leading tacklers from last season returning in Senior linebacker Cesar Maldonado was a 2nd team all SPI- AA selection with a season total of 75.5 total tackles. Senior defensive lineman Jordan Loewen finished just behind Maldonado last season with 49.5 total tackles. This year, head coach Reigo Hahn will look to senior Landon Walker to fill Harrington s shoes. Walker was second to Harrington in all-purpose yards and touchdowns last season. While Walker headlines the returners for the Wildcats, he is joined by a majority of last season s team. Harrington was one of only three seniors lost to graduation. Senior Cody Berger and junior Jesse Pinkerton will play a big part on the defensive side for Minneola. Berger led the team last season with 106 total tackles. Overall, the Lancers have 14 letter-winners returning from last season s 10-1 campaign. Senior running back and linebacker Nathan Stein headlines the returning starters. Last season Stein led the Lancers with 879 passing yards, 954 rushing yards and 32 total touchdowns. Stein also finished the season with a team-high 75 tackles. He s a great young man, head coach Matt Fowler said. Hopefully he will be a leader and just continue The Spearville Lancers volleyball team heads into the 2015 season hoping to build off of last year s 39-5 season. Having lost just two seniors, the Lancers return an experienced squad in The kids we have are very committed to working hard, head coach Syble Thompson said. They work hard in the summer to get to make his teammates better. Spearville did not struggle to score points last season, averaging just over 52 points per game, but this season Fowler wants to see his guys step up on the defensive side of the ball. We had a very good defense last year I just really want that to be our calling card, Fowler said.
