4 A Review of the Season 2017 The 2017 Rocky River Girls Soccer (RRGS) team was the 30 th team in the history of Rocky River High School Girls Soccer. RRGS had a pretty good and memorable season (79% winning, tied for 6 th all-time) with some nice accomplishments but a few significant shortfalls. The 2017 RRGS team improved greatly over their 2016 result which says a lot since they were pretty much the same team from last year (2016) and just as difficult a schedule of opponents except with another year of experience and some new freshmen blood. Their Conference result was the same but their victories were more (15 compared to 9), they went farther in the playoffs (District Runner-Up) and most significantly, the 2017 team did an outstanding job on defense limiting their opponents to only 15 goals (0.79 goals/game average, 4 th all-time) and achieving 11 shutouts (3 rd all-time). The 2017 RRGS team played two of the best D2 teams in the area twice this season both in Conference and in the state playoffs: Bay and Holy Name. Of River s 4 loses, they accounted for 3 of them as RRGS went 1-3 against Bay and Holy Name. The only other loss this season was to D2 State Runner-Up, Lake Catholic 1-2 with RRGS playing with a restricted roster. This team had two big wins over out of state teams, McDowell of Pennsylvania and Wheeling Park of West Virginia continuing the all-time RRGS no-loss streak over out-of-state opponents to Also notable, RRGS beat Kirtland 2-1 early in the season and Kirtland went on to be the D3 State Runner-Up. The highlight game of the season was easily the District Semi-Final match played away from the confines of RRHS stadium against Holy Name on a cold, windy, and rainy night. The defense was stellar in keeping the Namers out of the goal and goalkeeper Gabrielle Avila had two beautiful saves while Ellie Duncan played the annoyer shadowing Holy Name s leading goal score all over the stadium. In the middle of the second half, after receiving a pass from Olivia McDonald, Lizzie Hamker lofted a beautiful shot over the Holy Name keeper which held as the winning goal. Did I mention it was also cold, windy and rainy? RRGS finished 3 rd in the Great Lake Conference (4-2-0) behind runner-up Holy Name (5-1-0) and conference champion, Bay (6-0-0). Bay beat River for the District Championship and easily advanced to the Regional Finals where Bay lost to Mansfield Madison 1-2. The 2017 team had four seniors Maddy Anderson, Bridgette McCue, Olivia McDonald (co-captain), Addy Zenko. McDonald earned a rare fourth varsity letter and finished 6 th all-time in goals and points (42 goals, 19 assists, 103 points). Defending center midfielder junior Alexandra Gluntz had a memorable game against Firelands in the playoffs with 4 goals in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Avila and her brick wall defense (Maddy Anderson, Alexandra Gluntz, Chloe Reust, Keira Vesy, Addy Zenko) had 11 shutouts for the season (3 rd best RRGS all-time) and twice they had streaks of 4 shutout games in a row. The 15 goals allowed and 0.79 goals/game allowed average ranked 4 th best all-time. This team also had some freshmen make significant appearances on the varsity, Maya Patti, Keira Vesy and Mia Kelly. Statistically, this team s season, especially defensively, ranks as one of the best and Olivia McDonald leaves with some top ten finishes herself. The 2017 RRGS team established themselves in the record book Top 10 Best Overall Record Winning %, Season = 79% (6 th tied) Top 10 Most Overall Points Earned, Season = 45 (5 th ) Top 10 Most Overall Wins, Season = 15 (4 th tied) Top 10 Fewest Number of Losses, Season = 4 (7 th tied) Top 10 Most Consecutive Wins, Season = 7 (5 th tied) Top 10 Most Shutouts in a Season = 11 (3 rd ) Top 10 Most Consecutive Shutout Streak, Season = 4 twice (3 rd twice, tied) Top 10 Most Goals Scored, Season = 58 (10 th ) Top 10 Most Goals/Game Average, Season = 3.05 (10 th ) Top 10 Fewest Goals Allowed, Season = 15 (4 th ) Top 10 Lowest Goals Allowed/Game Average, Season = 0.79 (4 th ) Top 10 Most Goals Individual in a Game = 4, Alexandra Gluntz (4 th tied) Top 10 Most Shutouts, Goalkeeper in a Season = 11, Gabrielle Avila (3 rd ) Top 10 Most Consecutive Shutout Streak, Season = 4 twice, Gabrielle Avila (3 rd twice, tied) Top 10 Lowest Goals Allowed/Game Average, Season = 0.79, Gabrielle Avila (4 th ) Top 10 Best Goalkeeper Winning %, Season = 79% (5 th ) Top 10 Most Goals, Career = 42, Olivia McDonald (6 th ) Top 10 Most Points, Career = 103, Olivia McDonald (6 th ) Top 10 Most Shutouts, Career = 15, Gabrielle Avila (7 th ) It should be noted that Allison Contenza earned 2 nd Team D2 All-Ohio honors and Coach Patrick Hopkins was named D2 Greater Cleveland Coach of the Year for a second time (also in 2013). Rocky River High School (RRHS) is a public high school consisting of grades 9-12 with an enrollment of about 900 students whereas no student lives more than 2.5 miles from the school and RRHS is surrounded by private schools: Rocky River Magnificat High School (500 yards), Rocky River Lutheran West High School (1.4 miles), Cleveland St Joseph Academy (2.9 miles), Lakewood St Edwards High School (3.9 miles) and Cleveland St Ignatius High School (8.1 miles) that filters some of the city of Rocky River s student athlete population. 15 Rocky River High School Girls Soccer Team Crest History When Coach Hopkins became the head coach of RRGS back in the Fall of 2006, he started a new tradition by incorporating a logo/crest which would be unique for the RRGS team. He borrowed ideas from an English Premier League team s crest, the Liverpool Football Club and the Rocky River School System s logo at the time and merged them. This explains why it reads FOOTBALL and not SOCCER + = When the crest was established, RRGS had never won a Conference Championship or District Final. wins. In the 21 st year of existence, RRGS won its first Conference title as the 2008 West Shore Conference Champions. To recognize this achievement, a was added to the crest much like how countries add stars to their national uniforms for each of their World Cup This was followed by more WSC Championships in 2010, 2011 and The ultimate goal of a lifetime is a State Championship which was last accomplished by a Rocky River High School team in 1927 by the Boys Track Team. However, if that was ever achieved, then a would be added to the crest which would symbolize the achievement which gives the logo ending the 2013 season as In 2014, another WSC Championship star had to be added to the logo so it has been changed to this current final version. 30 2017 Rocky River High School Hall of Fame inductee Ashley Rucker Rivera. Ashley Rucker, a 2007 graduate of Rocky River High School was a member of the 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 RRGS teams which were in their 16 th, 17 th, 18 th, and 19 th seasons. During Ashley s junior (2005) and senior (2006) years on the RRGS team, the team achieved the 2 nd and 3 rd best RRGS team records up to that point in time. During years 2003 through 2006, there existed only two (2) Divisions in OHSAA Girls Soccer with approximately 240 teams in each Division. In 2011, OHSAA went to three (3) Divisions in Girls Soccer with approximately 170 teams in each Division. When there were only two (2) Divisions, it generally took an additional win during Sectionals in order to get to Districts. Ashley s freshmen year was primarily on JV and her sophomore year on the Varsity team was primarily as a defender with limited scoring opportunities. Her junior and senior years, Ashley played more as a high center midfielder/forward on Varsity and she took advantage of the opportunity becoming the 3 rd most prolific RRGS scorer at that point in time. Ashley s Soccer Goals, Assists, and Points (Points is calculated as Goals x 2, plus Assists) Goals, 0 Assists, 0 Points Goals, 5 Assists, 23 Points Goals, 7 Assists, 49 Points Goals, 5 Assists, 45 Points Ashley earned three (3) Varsity Letters in Soccer (2004, 2005, 2006) and was a Co-Captain in Currently Ashley is: 6 th (tied) and 10 th all-time for Most Goals in a Season (2005 = 21 and 2006 = 20). 5 th all-time for Most Points in a Career (117 points). 5 th all-time for Most Goals in a Career (50 goals). 21 st (tied) all-time for Most Assists in a Career (17 assists). Ashley joins a very select group of girls from RRGS to get an All-Ohio selection. In 2006, Ashley was named 3 rd Team, All-Ohio for Division I. Ashley was the first RRGS player to be named to a Division I girls soccer team. Prior to 2011, OSSCA awarded All-Ohio girls soccer player honors to 46 players in the two (2) Divisions divided into 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd Teams. Since OHSAA Girls Soccer went to three (3) Divisions in 2011, OSSCA only awards All-Ohio to 1 st and 2 nd Team within a Division, however, they divide the All-Ohio honors among players. In today s current set-up, Ashley easily would have been named 2 nd Team, All-Ohio. The complete list of Soccer Awards and Honors earned by Ashley are: 2006, 3 rd Team, All-Ohio for Division I. 2006, 1 st Team, All-Greater Cleveland for Division I. 2006, 1 st Team, All-West Shore Conference. 2006, All Sun Northwest Newspaper Soccer Team 2006, Co-Captain 2006, Varsity Letter 2005, 1 st Team, All-Greater Cleveland for Division I. 2005, MVP of the West Shore Conference. 2005, 1 st Team, All-West Shore Conference. 2005, All Sun Newspapers Soccer Team 2005, All Sun Northwest Newspaper Soccer Team 2005, PD Player of the Week (twice) 2005, Varsity Letter 2004, Honorable Mention, All-Greater Cleveland for Division II. 2004, Varsity Letter Ashley played college soccer at Edinboro University in 2007 and Notre Dame College 2008, 2009 and Notre Dame College was an NAIA school during Ashley s years and in 2013 they became an NCAA Division II Women s Soccer program. In 2008, Ashley scored 11 goals for Notre Dame College (NDC) which is still the All-Time Record for Most Goals in a Season at NDC. Ashley also earned three (3) Varsity Letters in Track at RRHS and was a Regional Qualifier her senior year. She is currently listed in the Top 10 All-Time in the Long Jump tied at number 10 with a leap of (in 2007 when she performed the Long Jump, her leap was the 6 th best All-Time). Today, Ashley lives in the Tennessee with her husband Jose Rivera and is the mother of three children. Her parents, Ron and Lisa still reside in Rocky River. Page 28 updated 11/17/17
