Patrick Comiskey is the Safety Manager for the. Mr. Pat explained to me all the training the employees receive to ensure they perform their work in a safe manor. At SSWJV, safety is not just a slogan or a hard hat sticker; it is the core of our culture. Every employee is given the education and equipment they need to complete their daily tasks. They also receive special training for any unusual work that this project requires. As we walked the job site, Pat pointed out a lot of the safety procedures and policies that had been discussed during our job orientation. Crews have quite a task when planning a safe work activity for the crews and the general public. I was amazed how much time, energy and resources were expended to ensure the safety of both the crews and the public in our work zones. When we walked the project, I saw workers escorting a young man and a Seeing Eye dog through crosswalks a number of times. Come Crews out for the weekly walk with one of to find out the crews meet weekly with various people who have visually impaired friends special needs. When planning the work area crews are also mindful in making arrangements for wheelchair bound people to get to bus stops and cross busy intersections. Spotters are on the constant lookout for anyone with special needs or may have questions about the work areas. A spotter is a worker whose only job is to watch for pedestrians and vehicles that may enter our work zone. They also watch to ensure our equipment does not endanger the public. When a pedestrian is close to our equipment the spotter will notify the operator to stop work until the person is through our work zone There are currently over 1200 units (7200 feet) of Yodock water barrier in place throughout the 3.24 miles of the. Those are the orange and white barriers that help protect workers, direct traffic flow, and provide pedestrian walkways. Thousands of signs, barricades, lights are also in place to provide similar functions. But what was most impressive to me were the workers themselves. What a crew! These guys are all over the place supporting the 200 workers onsite and keeping everyone safe, constantly setting up work areas and maintaining the work site. s I learned that the safety of the public and our workers is the most important part of this project. 1

3 Contractor s Weekly Update Work activities/traffic control week of 5/27/2013 Dunlap Intersection Joint Trench work continues on Dunlap. One lane both East and Westbound will be maintained. Dunlap to Butler One lane both north and south bound will be maintained as well as turns at the signalized intersections. Sewer, water, and storm drain work continue. Butler will close June 3-July 8 see map on page 6 Butler to Northern Filling up the newly placed water barrier One lane both north and south bound will be maintained as well as turns at the signalized intersections. Water transmission main, joint trench, and SRP irrigation Northern Intersection 2 lanes both east and westbound will be maintained 7am 4pm Northern to Orangewood One lane both north and south bound will be maintained as well as turns at the signalized intersections. Gas line relocations. SRP Irrigation continues Storm Drain, sewer Glendale Intersection Joint Trench crews working in front of Boston Market. Mandy and staff at BM have been great to work with! Glendale will be restricted to one lane east and westbound left turn bays will be maintained. 24 hours a day. Glendale to Maryland One lane both north and south bound will be maintained as well as turns at the signalized intersections. Storm drain, sewer, gas, and water line installations are ongoing throughout this area. Potential closures Lawrence, Ocotillo, and Tuckey See map on page 7 Joint Trench continues North of Maryland Maryland to Bethany Home Road One lane both north and southbound. Turns will be maintained at signalized intersections. SRP joint trench and gas line installations continue. Rose Lane closed May see map on page 9 Maryland restricted June 3-17 see map on page 10 Bethany Home Road Intersection One lane both east and west bound will be maintained 7am-4pm Bethany Home will be restricted to 1 lane east and west bound with no left turns at 19 th Ave 10 PM to 6 AM 5/28 to 5/31.
