1 All Weather News April Deadline for May news: Apr 24 Pinebrook/Haagan Park A Memorable Event! There were a number of elements that contributed to this event, and made it one worth remembering but let me start with the most exceptional, unique and unexpected element Jan Jorgensen, an international walking legend. On the front page of the April/May 2012 edition of The American Wanderer an article captured my attention, the accomplishments of a Norwegian volkswalker in the United States accomplishments of epic proportion. I read the first part of the article with genuine interest, and the balance in utter disbelief. This is EPIC: 1) Jan completed walks in all 50 states twice, working on a 3 rd time; 2) completed the A-Z program twice; 3) walked all the state capitols twice and has returned to the United States yet again to complete a 9 month, 22 state walking tour and there he was before me at the start table! WOW! He looked just like his photo. I m thinking seventeen thousand kilometers in those feet, and counting. I m so glad he chose to attend our walk. He is as exceptional as he is unassuming. There is something to learn and admire about his approach to life. Jan is 70+ years young, enjoying every moment, and looking forward to that next volksmarch. May we all be able to follow in his footsteps. He autographed a walk flyer and it is in the hands of Jill McLean, our club historian this one is in the books. Our walk was dry and successful. There were 141 walkers, over 30% doing the 5k. We received numerous compliments on the venue many had never experienced Chuck s Produce, but developed a quick liking for the deli, a classic car introducing produce, and produce worthy of such an introduction. Volunteers made it all possible and did a terrific job! Earl Bowen and Don Webb marked the trails flawlessly. Many walkers complimented their work. Leah Townsend and Jean Moeller proofed the 5k directions; Jan Breneman proofed everything that Pat Gorman and I did (and it s a good thing) ; Liz Connors, Nira Lang, Cheryl Snodgrass and Jill McLean worked the tables throughout the day. A special thanks to Joan Heins and her stealth trail stripping team. They are the 1

2 best! Extra kudos to Joan for managing the trailer for the AWW. Pat and I are rookies at staging a volksmarch but are willing to do another, with your support. As of May 1, the name of our start point for the Puyallup YRE 1411 will be changed to Volcano Coffee and no longer Forza Coffee. It is only a name change. Puyallup is in Washington. 3. The YREs that begin at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland are back up and running. They are - YRE 256 NW Crosstown, YRE 297 Council Crest, and YRE 410 NW Downtown. President s Corner Jan Breneman PREZ SEZ Wow! The RED LETTER DAY for Linda Barneson and Pat Gorman is now in the history books. The Pinebrook/Haagan Park walk was met with dry sunshine, a great start area at Chucks, and many walkers happy smiles (including a very special guest). These two women worked handily for months preparing to offer us 2

3 all a great walking experience and succeeded in spades. Thanks, Pat and Linda, for all your efforts! The club s next Traditional Event is at Pacific Community Park in East Vancouver on May 26. Earl Bowen and I have pretty much finalized the route and the Pathfinder ad is in. I hope to bring at least a draft of the brochure to the April 10 meeting. I m still working with the City of Vancouver regarding their required permit; volkswalks don t seem to fit their profile. More on that subject in a couple of weeks. Contact me if you are interested in joining a group going to the Northwest Regional Conference coming up on August Website is here: Our North Bonneville and Ridgefield Seasonals begin in April 1. Both these walks are not to be missed and hopefully we will have a group walk (or two) at each this summer. As you will see in this newsletter, April brings several Weekend Walks and I am leading the group on the Wetlands/Ikea YRE on the 15 th. I did it with Robyn and Karla recently just to refresh my memory, and was again impressed with its wild nature paths in the middle of this busy industrial/retail zone. Come on out and join us sometime this month you won t regret it. CAN ALSO BE USED FOR Bandana: Napkin, washcloth, headband, bandage, towel, hat, scarf, water filter, water collector or fire starter. Cord: Clothing line, to tie extras to your backpack, to lower a water bottle into a hard reaching water source, to lower your gear down a steep cliff, to stretch out a tent. Walking stick: Rake to smooth ground before erecting tent, to wave aggressively at angry farm dogs, to flick debris off the trail, to fight back overgrown vegetation, to probe the ground for snakes or to attach a cloth and turn it into a sunshade. Baking soda: Toothpaste, boot deodorizer, underarm deodorant or to soak your feet in after long day. Cheesecloth: Water filter, bandage, mosquito net, coffee/tea filter or fishing net, bag knotted, attached to one end of a stick. 3

7 Jamie Kott Stef-anie Wells Barbara Snodgrass Dan and Julie Eaton ALL WEATHER WALKERS MEETING MINUTES March 13, 2012; 6:30 p.m. Terrace Cafe, Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center Jan Breneman called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. Present: Jan Breneman (President), Pat Gorman (Secretary), Joe Titone (Newsletter Editor), Jean Moeller, Barbara Baker, Dick Baker, Nira Lang, Cheryl Snodgrass, Jean Meyer, Len Meyer, Liz Connors, Diane Lampe, Earl Bowen, and Leah Townsend. The minutes of the February 14, 2012 were approved as submitted. There was no correspondence to discuss. Treasurer s Report: The balance on 1/31/2012 was $3, In February there were expenses of $27.27 and income of $40.00 for a balance of $3, on 2/28/2012. Membership Report: There are 19 previous members who have not renewed for Jan and Linda will be contacting some of those who have not paid to determine if they wish to continue as members. Weekend Walks: Joe Titone reported that there were six weekend walks since our last meeting with continued good attendance. Wilsonville 2/26 with 26 participants, Sherwood 2/26 with 24 participants, Rock Creek North 3/4 with 25 participants, St Johns 3/10 with 29 Participants, and Orenco Station 3/11 with 15 participants. There are group walks planned 3/24 at Browns Ferry-Tualatin and 4/1 at Rock Creek South. Wednesday Walks: There has been good turnout except for one walk with bad weather in Lake Oswego. There were 25 participants at St. Helens. OLD BUSINESS: Planned 2012 Events Updates: 7

8 March 25, Pinebrook (sanctioned). Linda Barneson and Pat Gorman, co-chairs; Jan Breneman, mentor). More volunteers are needed to help. The sign-up sheet was circulated. Leah and Jean reported that they tested the directions for the 5k and there were no corrections needed. The stamp has arrived. Maps will be printed. May 26 Pacific Park. The ad for the Pathfinder is being revised. July 21, Camas. Jan has the route determined but has concern about one spot. There is a bike lane only Challenge Drawing. Linda Barneson is the winner of the gift certificate Challenge. Liz distributed sheets for the 2012 Challenge. You must do 8 of the 10 walks to complete the challenge. NEW BUSINESS: There will be two major walks we will be responsible for in One for a state meeting and a state park walk. There was brainstorming of possible routes. o Battleground Lake o Beacon Rock State Park. The meeting site could be at N. Bonneville or Stevenson o The Ridgefield walk o Woodland o Fairway Village ANNOUNCEMENTS: The next ESVA state meeting is in Olympia on May 12 Save the date for our annual potluck on June 12 in the PUD Building. Jan asked for someone to volunteer to organize this event. The Ridgefield and North Bonneville Seasonals begin Sunday, April 1, Jan will put the box out at North Bonneville.
