1 All Weather News October Deadline for Nov news: Oct 24 From: Linda Dietzman (editor s note: Linda is an Osprey and a member of the Camas City Council) Thought you might like to learn about this newer park in Washougal: Mable Kerr Park (there s more information at this link) Mable Kerr Park, located at 4600 Gifford Place, nestles between Orchard Hills Golf Course to the North, Sunset View Road to the East, the Washougal School District to the South, and the Gifford-Liedtke neighborhood to the West. The property lines have long been confused in this park. Most of what the park users have come to know is actually Washougal School District land. Now a gravel path and property corner posts delineate the two properties. Individual volunteers and groups such as Young Life stepped forward to build all of the trails through this park and plant over 500 trees. The Parks Foundation of Clark County donated funds and collected volunteers for the 2009 Earth Day trail building and tree-planting event. One section of trail remains unfinished on the East side of the pedestrian bridge; however, volunteer efforts may finish this project in Trailheads are located at 45th/Gifford Place and at Sunset View Road to the north of the Washougal School District property. This park provides opportunities to view wildlife such as deer, songbirds and heron. Please respect the residents adjacent to the park by keeping your dog on a leash at all times. From: WILLIS KORFF korffs@wildblue.net (our Regional Director) 1. Jim Buchholz: This morning 09/15/11 Jim was on a hike around Kellog ID. He let the folks with him go ahead on the trail while he looked for a walking stick. When he did not show up, they went back and found him dead. At this time that is all we know, Jinny told us there would be an autopsy and her sister is flying in to 1
2 be with her. Neighbors are with her tonight. I will write an article for the Pathfinder when I know more. Donna Withers Lilac City Volkssport Association Vice President President s Corner Jan Breneman PREZ SEZ I just recently completed my 10,000 kilometer book that s just over 6200 miles. The equatorial circumference of the earth is 24,901 miles (40,075 km), so I have a ways to go to travel the world vicariously through volkssporting. It remains to be seen if I ll ever get over the East Coast, but I sure love our local Northwest! The Events Committee members are Linda Barneson, Pat Gorman, Earl Bowen, Joe Titone, Dick Baker, and myself. At this writing, we will hold our first meeting at the end of September. If you wish to join the committee, you are most welcome. PLEASE also contact any of us to offer input about walks you would like to see either new ones, maybe in your neighborhood, or a favorite one from the past. The year 2012 is our 20-year anniversary and it should be memorable. It s again time to order the Starting Points, the printed book of all the volkwalks throughout the United States. This year it is $20 paid on arrival, probably early in December. Please let me know if you would like one. breneman@pacifier.com or 360/ Fall days are inevitable enjoy the crisp autumn air. Rambling Riddle The riddle asked of Oedipus by the Sphinx: I walk on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, three legs in the evening. What am I? (Answer next month.) 2

Jean and Leah were not able to find part of the trail because of overgrown brush. The season for the walk would be April to September. Reinstating the walk was approved contingent on getting cooperation from the Wildlife Reserve. Jan will get it sanctioned if it works. The Audit Committee has yet to meet. AVA Patch: There was discussion on whether to order a supply of AVA Patches to sell during National Volksporting Month which is October. Jan will order five patches. New Washougal start point: The Pendleton store does not seem like a good option. Papa s Ice Cream, in the town center is an option and they are willing to do this. Jan will get a new box and make sure the directions say to phone ahead to confirm open hours on Sundays in the winter. This move was approved. AVA 2012 Programs and Challenges: Leah and Jean will apply these to our walks (YRE S). 5
6 Cape Horn: Jan reported that this walk is very much improved. It has a short season and is a difficult walk but great scenery and is a good challenge. It is open July 1 to September 30. We will do for one quarter as a Seasonal. It will have remote registration. Jan recommended we have registration at both North Bonneville and Washougal. This will take two stamps. This was approved. Seasonals and YRE s: The renewals and the AVA website updates were completed by Jan. Ridgefield will be a seasonal. We will need to clear part of the path leading to the parking lot occasionally. Cape Horn will have two 5K options, one 6K, and an 11K. It will be open 7/16 to 9/31 and the start point will be Papa s Ice-cream in Washougal rather than the AM PM. This will also be the new remote start for all Washougal walks. There will be a 5K added to the WSU Walk. The Fisher s Landing walk will pass the Stardust Diner. Round Lake will have a 5K available except in heavy rain. New Business The Events committee will meet Thursday September 29 at 6pm at Dick and Barbara Baker s home. Earl reported on the ESVA meeting held in Grayland in August. The AVA budget is $36,000 short and the state is $240 short. The ESVA is looking at the effects of being able to do a walk for credit as many times as desired and to see if that will have an effect on events. The National Convention will have training to be 7
8 certified as a Trail Master. ESVA has been issuing fines to clubs for not submitting after action reports on time for events. AWW is on Facebook. We will be able to list events. Our club order is due November 1, and Jan needs to know who wants to order copies before then. The order must be at least 10. Announcements: Sam Green has announced there will be an AVA committee to discuss the future of the Starting Point. What form should this publication take, online or as done presently? Should it be sold by regions and by pre-orders only? There will also be a Technology Committee. A member s only page is being considered.
