Take your first step by reading through this guide and developing a fundraising plan that will work for you and your team. Remember, the key to success is simply getting started! In addition to this guide, we have staff available to support you every step of your fundraising journey. They can provide you with further tools, resources and ideas to drive your fundraising campaign, and ensure you reach your goal. Call or your state office to reach us at any point along your Oxfam Trailwalker journey. Thank you for joining Oxfam Trailwalker and making the commitment to fundraise for Oxfam Australia. 3 OXFAM IN ACTIOn BY TAKING PART IN OXFAM TRAILWALKER, YOU RE MAKING A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE TO THE LIVES OF PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY AROUND THE WORLD. WITH THE FUNDS YOU RAISE, WE ARE ABLE TO CONTINUE OUR VITAL, LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT WORK, PROMOTING EDUCATION, ENSURING ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER, TEACHING SKILLS TO GROW FOOD AND FIGHTING FOR THE BASIC RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE WE HELP. WITH THE RIGHT SUPPORT, THE WORLD S POOREST PEOPLE CAN TAKE CONTROL AND HELP THEMSELVES THROUGH SUSTAINABLE LIVING. THAT S WHERE YOU COME IN! A STEADY SOURCE OF FOOD AND INCOME Currently, one in nine people worldwide go to bed hungry, but not because there isn t enough food for everyone. Unfair markets, inequality between men and women, degradation of natural resources, and changing climates are all contributing to global hunger. With your support, Oxfam is helping people reclaim control over their land, grow more food to feed their families, receive a fair price at market for their produce, and reduce their vulnerability to climate change. Your support in action: Following a lengthy civil war that ended in the early 1990s, around 70% of Mozambique s population live below the poverty line. Oxfam s work in the Inhambane region is focused on supporting local partners to help people grow their own diverse crops, rear livestock, link to fair markets, and earn a living. Anita Omar is now able to grow cabbages and onions after Oxfam s partner, Malhalhe, built a well in her village and trained a group of 10 women in agriculture. It was very difficult before, everything depended on the seasons. If we had money then we would buy meat, and if not, then we would just make a sauce from coconut and eat that... The garden has made a big difference though, because I am able to grow vegetables and sell them, as well as eat them at home. With the extra money I make, I can buy coconut and peanuts. I also give some of my vegetables to my neighbours. I couldn t do these things before. $100 will cover the cost of training 10 people in home gardening and farming, enabling them to grow their own food and sell it for an income. EMPOWERING LIVES AT HOME Poverty in Australia is as harsh as it is in developing countries, and it s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples some half a million Australians who are among the most disadvantaged. More than 200 years of dispossession, racism and discrimination have left Indigenous Australians with the lowest levels of education, the highest levels of unemployment, the poorest health, and the most appalling housing conditions. Yet despite this, we know that the future is bright, because we ve seen what s possible when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are empowered to take control over their own lives. Your support in action: When 22-year-old Rhett Burraston joined Oxfam s ChangeCourse program in 2012, he dreamed of starting something Nhongue Village, Gaza Province, Mozambique. Anita Omar shows off the produce she has grown in her garden, which was installed as part of an agricultural program tackling hunger in Mozambique. Photo: Abbie Trayler-Smith/OxfamAUS. that would give at-risk youth in his community a stimulating and safe place to turn to instead of getting into trouble. Today he runs an after-school sports program in his hometown of Airds, NSW, where he works with Aboriginal kids over the long-term, ensuring they are happy, healthy and have goals for the future. I want to create positive change for young people in Aboriginal communities. If you can t do that in your own community, how can we do it on a national or even state level? $150 will go towards training and providing support to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in leading community programs and proactively effecting change within their communities. 3

THE MORE YOU RAISE, THE BIGGER THE DIFFERENCE YOU MAKE $22 WILL BUY NOTEPADS AND PENS FOR A SCHOOL IN TIMOR- LESTE, ALLOWING STUDENTS TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THEIR EDUCATION. $50 WILL HELP BUILD A RAINWATER TANK THAT WILL PROVIDE A REMOTE, DISASTER-PRONE VILLAGE IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS WITH A CLEAN AND RELIABLE WATER SUPPLY. $95 COULD BUY 50 BANANA PLANTS FOR A FAMILY IN SRI LANKA, INCREASING THEIR INCOME BY $15 PER MONTH AFTER ONE YEAR. $259 OFFERS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR A FAMILY TO BUY A COW IN BANGLADESH, PROVIDING THEM WITH NUTRITION AND AN ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOOD. $1,000 WILL EVACUATE A WOMAN AND TWO CHILDREN FROM A VIOLENT SITUATION IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA AND PROVIDE A BASIC START-UP KIT FOR A NEW LIFE IN A SAFER LOCATION. Some people may not want to be the first to donate to your Teamspace, so lead the way! Set the bar for future donations most people will match or exceed your donation. SPREAD THE WORD Send an to everyone in your contact list and include a link to your Teamspace. Expand your giving circle by asking your network to forward your s to at least three other people, and to share your Facebook and Twitter updates. Contact your local newspaper to spread the word in your community. QUICK TIP: if you ask (and keep asking) you shall receive! Photo: Caron Craig from the No Excuses team. 5

MAKE A PLAN IN THE SAME WAY YOU DEVELOP A TRAINING SCHEDULE FOR OXFAM TRAILWALKER, A TEAM FUNDRAISING PLAN IS ALSO ESSENTIAL TO ENSURE A FUN, EASY AND EMPOWERING EXPERIENCE FOR YOU, YOUR DONORS, AND YOUR SUPPORT CREW! MEET AS A TEAM EARLY AND REGULARLY Team meetings are a fantastic opportunity to brainstorm ideas, plan ahead, keep everyone updated, share your fundraising successes and support each other along your journey. Use team meetings to agree on fundraising goals for events and initiatives, gain an understanding of the time each team member can commit to the team s fundraising efforts, and consider the number and types of activities you think you can achieve. BRAINSTORM As a team, write down all your ideas, no matter how big or small they are. Think about events you may have organised or attended in the past, and what made them successful. Decide on the best activities that suit your team and start creating a schedule. The key to brainstorming is to not limit yourself. Be adventurous and try something new! DECIDE WHAT WORKS FOR YOU Not every fundraising idea will work for every team. By planning together, you can each be honest about the time, resources and capacity you have to commit to certain initiatives. Everyone has a different network of friends, family, colleagues and interest groups. Maximise your pool of potential donors by asking each team member to tap into their own network during the planning stage, therefore ensuring that all potential donors are connected with your Oxfam Trailwalker experience. SET TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL GOALS Remember this is a team event, both on and off the trail, so decide your fundraising goals as a team. Perhaps you could divide the fundraising between each team member so that each person has their own individual goal to achieve. This ensures that fundraising is the responsibility of the whole team. Each member only needs to raise $350 to reach the $1,400 minimum. With a team effort, hitting your fundraising goals is easy! Karen Franklin and her team, the Keen Beans, raised more than $8,000 for Oxfam Trailwalker Brisbane in 2014! One of their fundraising ideas, was involving all their family and friends in a community garage sale. Donations were accepted from the entire community and at their workplaces, and gave people the opportunity to get rid of their pre-loved possessions with all profits going to the teams fundraising total. Photo: Karen Franklin from the Keen Beans team 6

PERSONALISE YOUR TEAMSPACE YOUR TEAMSPACE IS THE HUB OF YOUR OXFAM TRAILWALKER EXPERIENCE. USE IT TO REACH OUT TO YOUR SOCIAL NETWORKS, PROMOTE YOUR TEAM FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES, SHARE YOUR OXFAM TRAILWALKER JOURNEY AND CHECK OUT YOUR FELLOW TEAMS. FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO ACTIVATE YOUR TEAMSPACE: 1. LOG ONTO YOUR TEAMSPACE Log on using your unique username and password, which were ed to you when you registered. If you d like to be sent these again, please let us know. 2. UPLOAD A TEAM PHOTO People love to be able to put faces to names, so upload a photo of your team to introduce yourselves to your supporters. Perhaps something fun that shows your personalities, or an action shot from when you are out training in your gear. 3. WRITE A TEAM BIO This is a chance for you to really personalise your Teamspace. Share the story of how you met, why you decided to take on the Oxfam Trailwalker challenge and why people should donate to your team. Say a little bit about each team member, share your team s personal mission statement and, most importantly, make it fun! 4. START BLOGGING Blogs are a great way to keep your supporters in the loop. Blogs enable you to share your team s achievements, promote the fundraising events you are holding, tell stories of your tough training walks and show all the fun your team is having preparing for Oxfam Trailwalker. Regular blogs will show how passionate you are and encourage more people to donate. The most recent blogs will appear on the Oxfam Trailwalker homepage, and will show everyone just how awesome you are! 5. SEND NEWSLETTERS Sometimes people need a bit of prompting, so you can use your Teamspace to send a team newsletter. Send your blog updates, invitations to your fundraising events and words of thanks to your supporters using your very own Oxfam Trailwalker-branded s. 6. SHARE Share your Teamspace URL over , Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr to let everyone know what you re doing. A great social media presence will help boost your fundraising. With each post, remind your supporters just how far their donations can go to helping people living in poverty. Photo: Lara McKinley/OxfamAUS 7

SPREAD THE WORD USING YOUR NETWORKS AND SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE BEST WAY TO SHARE YOUR NEWS AND GROW YOUR FUNDRAISING. FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO QUICKLY REACH YOUR FUNDRAISING GOALS. WHO SHOULD I ASK? Compile a list of everyone you know and start asking for support. The more people you ask, the more donations you are likely to receive. Remember, you are doing something extraordinary so give as many people as possible the opportunity to support your journey. HOW DO I ASK? we have several templates for you to use or adapt. The most important thing is to let your personality shine through. Face-to-face: asking for support in person allows you to talk passionately about your dedication to your Oxfam Trailwalker experience. Expand your circle: you can increase your support by asking your donors to forward your , Facebook post or tweet, or include a link to your Teamspace in their signature. You ll be surprised at who will want to join your team in the fight against poverty. DON T STOP THERE! You ve taken on an incredible challenge, now it s time to use your social network to tell everyone how amazing you are! Facebook: announce that you are officially participating in Oxfam Trailwalker on Facebook and include a link to your Teamspace. You can also use Facebook to create an event and post updates about your training and fundraising achievements. Twitter: tweet about your Oxfam Trailwalker commitment and add the link to your Teamspace. Don t forget to use #oaustrailwalker to really get your message out there. Instagram: and post pictures from your training, preparation and fundraising events to gain instant social media cred! KEEP IT GOING Now that you have reached out to everyone you know, they too have become part of your Oxfam Trailwalker journey. Use your Teamspace blogs to keep your supporters informed about how you re going with your training and fundraising in the lead up to the event. Your Teamspace blog is the perfect tool to quickly update everyone in one go, so post to your Teamspace, send as an newsletter, and share the link on social media to quickly spread the word. Most importantly, let your supporters know how much you appreciate them. Send a thank you or text to every individual who donates, and definitely let them all know when you hit a fundraising milestone. Fundraising with food is always a winner. This paella party has been held in Warrandyte, Victoria, since 2009, with a couple of teams joining together each year to feed their friends, family and local community. The event raises around $3,000 for Oxfam Australia. Photo: Lara McKinley/OxfamAUS 8

AIM HIGH REACHING YOUR FUNDRAISING GOAL IS A FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENT. HOWEVER, YOUR TEAM CAN MAKE AN EVEN GREATER IMPACT TO THE LIVES OF THOSE LIVING IN POVERTY BY AIMING HIGH AND CONTINUALLY RAISING YOUR GOAL. IT S OBLIGATION-FREE Each team that takes part in Oxfam Trailwalker commits to raising a minimum of $1,400 prior to hitting the Start line to support Oxfam s work around the world. We suggest aiming high with your initial goal and, once you ve reached it, raise it! Of course, there is no penalty if you don t quite reach your new goal above the $1,400 minimum. YOUR SUPPORTERS WANT TO HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOAL Your supporters will be more inclined to make larger donations, or donate to your team a second time, if you are yet to reach your goal. They want to see you succeed and, given the opportunity, you ll be surprised at how generous they will be. INCREASE YOUR FUNDRASING GOAL Once you have reached your fundraising goal, or call your Oxfam Trailwalker office and advise us that you would like to increase it. We will happily update your team s record to reflect your new goal. DURING EVENT WEEKEND Your friends, family and colleagues will follow your journey online over the event weekend. Raising your goal one last time before you head out on the trail will inspire your donors to support you every step of the way. Seeing that support on your Teamspace will motivate you to keep going during your Oxfam Trailwalker challenge. $1,400 WILL GO TOWARDS CONSTRUCTING TWO SCHOOL VEGETABLE GARDENS IN SOUTH AFRICA, TO GROW NUTRITIOUS FOOD FOR CHILDREN LIVING WITH, AND AFFECTED BY, HIV AND AIDS. $2,600 CAN PROVIDE 80 FAMILIES IN TIMOR- LESTE WITH GARDENING TOOLS, SUCH AS A HOE, SPADE AND WATERING CAN, TO GROW THEIR OWN FOOD AND SUPPORT THEMSELVES WITH NUTRITION AND INCOME. $6,685 WILL PAY FOR 312 WOMEN CHILLI FARMERS IN BANGLADESH TO ATTEND A TWO-DAY RESIDENTIAL TRAINING COURSE ON GROWING, PICKING AND SORTING CHILLIES, HELPING THEM TO ESTABLISH A LIVELIHOOD. $8,475 CAN PROVIDE 10 WOMEN IN SRI LANKA ACCESS TO CREDIT TO INVEST IN SMALL ENTERPRISES, SUCH AS BRICK MAKING, SPICE PRODUCTION, CULTIVATION, SMALL SHOPS, AND LIVESTOCK REARING, HELPING THEM TO MAKE A LIVING. $10,000 CAN CONSTRUCT 10 WATERLESS TOILETS FOR A LOCAL SCHOOL IN SOUTH AFRICA TO REDUCE THE RISK OF THE STUDENTS CATCHING DEADLY DISEASES. 10 EASY FUNDRASING IDEAS YOUR WORKPLACE, CLUBS AND OTHER NETWORKS ARE A GREAT PLACE TO FUNDRAISE AND, WITH MINIMAL EFFORT, YOU WILL FIND AN ENDLESS AMOUNT OF SUPPORT TO TAP INTO! MAXIMISE YOUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS BY IMPLEMENTING THESE EASY IDEAS. MARKET YOURSELF Once your Teamspace is up and running, everyone in your workplace or club to let them know that you and your team have just committed to Oxfam Trailwalker and you are seeking their support. Don t forget to add a link to your Teamspace and don t be afraid to ask for a donation. LET S LUNCH! Invite everyone to bring a dish to lunch on a certain date and make them pay a minimum donation ($15 is a good amount) to sample all the yummy food. If you want to spice it up a bit, why not choose a theme, then decorate or dress up to match. WHO DOESN T LOVE CAKE? DONATE FOR A SLICE! Bake or buy a cake and let everyone know it s in the kitchen. Place your Oxfam Trailwalker money box next to the cake, and invite your colleagues to enjoy a slice by making a gold coin donation. Quick tip: have your recipe book on hand and sell the recipe for an extra donation. SWEEPSTAKES How long will the team take to finish? How much will the team have raised by the start of event weekend? Set up your sweepstakes and let everyone pay to place their best guess. Ask for a $5, $10, $20 or $50 donation per guess. The winner could take home a bottle of wine or similar as a prize. AUCTION OFF YOUR TEAM NAME The highest bidder wins! This can be done in conjunction with a fundraising event or over a certain period of time. Whoever gives the highest single donation amount gets to pick your team name. Once your team name has been determined, or call your Oxfam Trailwalker office and we will make the change for you. MONEY BOX Use it to set up a swear jar or place it at your reception desk for people to toss in their spare change. OXFAM FAIR FUNDRAISING CHOCOLATES Who doesn t like chocolate at 3pm? Order your Oxfam Fairtrade chocolate from the fundraising resources page on our website and sell them at work, your children s school, or your club. This is an easy and effective way to raise funds as chocolate sells itself! PITCH IT TO YOUR CLIENTS Ask your clients to support you and, in return, wear the logo of the highest donor on your event t-shirt. It s a win-win situation. You receive support to reach your goal and your client receives promotion on event weekend. GET YOUR BOSS INVOLVED If you are planning a fundraiser at work, get your boss on board so they can rally your colleagues. With the whole office involved, they will feel like they are a part of your Oxfam Trailwalker journey. FIND A FUNDRAISING CHAMPION Reaching out to your network is key, but imagine doubling your reach by finding someone who is willing to fundraise on your behalf. Approach the person that shows the most enthusiasm for your challenge and, if they agree to fundraise on your behalf, prepare a fundraising they can easily send to their network. Don t forget to recognise your champions for their inspiring efforts. UPDATE YOUR SIGNATURE s fly in and out of your inbox daily. Update your signature by adding a link to your Teamspace and allowing all your contacts the chance to support your team. Quick tip: make sure you have personalised your Teamspace to inspire visitors to support your team. MATCH FUNDING Many employers have a match-funding program, where they ll match dollar-fordollar the amount raised by you or your team. Even if your employer doesn t have such a program, they might still be willing to make a donation all you have to do is ask! DON T FORGET, IF YOU NEED EXTRA RESOURCES SUCH AS BANNERS AND ADDITIONAL FUNDRAISING MATERIAL, DON T HESITATE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR OXFAM TRAILWALKER STAFF. Photo: Matthew Willman/OxfamAUS 10

MAKING A BIGGER IMPACT FUNDRAISING EVENTS ARE FANTASTIC, REWARDING ACTIVITIES BECAUSE YOU CAN MAKE THEM AS BIG OR AS SMALL AS YOU LIKE. THEY MIGHT TAKE A LITTLE EXTRA TIME TO ORGANISE, BUT EVENTS ARE A GREAT WAY TO REACH OR SURPASS YOUR GOAL IN ONE HIT! HOSTING AN EVENT Fundraising events are a great way to get your colleagues, friends and associates involved and make them feel like they are a part of your Oxfam Trailwalker journey, as well as letting them know the significance of their generous support to your team and Oxfam Australia. Use social media to promote your event and invite guests. Your Welcome Pack will include a fundraising poster that you can use to promote your event. You can download more from our website, or ask our staff to send some out to you. Be creative and tap into your own talents and those of friends, family and wider corporate and community networks. Remember to be safe, represent Oxfam Australia with pride and, most of all, have fun! Be sure to let your supporters know: What Oxfam Trailwalker is and the challenge you will be undertaking Your team s goals Why you are supporting Oxfam Australia Where the money you are raising will go They will feel more connected and involved in what you are doing and why you are raising funds! TOP FIVE OXFAM TRAILWALKER FUNDRAISING EVENTS Past participants have had the greatest success with the following: Sausage sizzle. Start planning early as you will need to arrange a local venue and organise the food. You may need to submit an application to hold a BBQ, depending on the venue you choose, so make sure you find out what is required beforehand. Movie night. Cinemas will usually charge you around $10 per ticket. Sell a ticket to your supporters for $25 and that s $15 towards your fundraising goal. Having door prizes or a raffle is a great addition to this event. Trivia night. Host a trivia night at your local pub and invite your friends, family, and colleagues. Ask them to bring their friends along too. Charge your friends $25 per ticket for the night, and don t forget to source prizes for your winners! Bake sale. Ask your friends and family to bake for you, or hold a sale of their own on your behalf. Have a variety of sweet treats available and remember to have options for special diets. Don t forget to have recipes on hand to sell at an extra cost. Dinner Party. Have your friends and family over for dinner and ask them to donate the cost of a dinner out (we recommend $50 per head). Remember to have your computer out, and your Teamspace up, to make it easy for your guests to donate online during the dinner. For more event ideas and helpful tips to make your event easy and successful, reach out to your Oxfam Trailwalker staff. We love to hear your ideas and the results of your successful events. REQUEST RESOURCES Letter of authority to fundraise A letter of authority to fundraise is available to each team on request. This letter is to verify that you are officially fundraising on behalf of Oxfam Australia. Many external parties will request this letter, so make sure to ask if you need to provide this document. It s also a very useful tool to help get your sponsorship requests across the line. Public liability insurance As an Oxfam Trailwalker participant, Oxfam Australia s public liability insurance covers you while you are running an event as part of your fundraising effort for Oxfam Trailwalker. Simply provide us with the date and a brief description of the event you need cover for, and we will provide you with appropriate documentation. Oxfam Australia s public liability insurance does not cover you for high-risk events such as skydiving or drag-car racing. Please check with us if you are not sure whether your event is classified as a high or low-risk event. Please note: this insurance covers you for fundraising only and not your participation in Oxfam Trailwalker itself. If you wish to cover yourself for the event weekend, you will need to organise this with your own personal health insurance company. $65 CAN PAY FOR A DISABILITY CAREGIVER TO ATTEND A THREE-DAY TRAINING COURSE TO INCREASE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE OF WATER SANITATION AND HYGIENE IN BANGLADESH.
