3 COLUMBUS CREW SC vs LADELA UNION MAPFRE STADIUM, Columbus, Ohio March 12, 216 (WEEK 2, MLS Game #16) 7:3 p.m. ET (TWC-OH / CW Columbus; LiveWell) Two teams looking to rebound from opening day setbacks meet in an Eastern Conference clash when Columbus Crew SC play host to Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at Mapfre Stadium. Crew SC saw their season start the way last year ended, falling 2-1 to the Portland Timbers in an MLS Cup 215 rematch at Providence Park. Union were on the road to begin the campaign, dropping a 2- decision at FC Dallas in their opener. REFEREE: Hilario Grajeda. They have won six of seven meetings there all-time, with one draw, including the last three matches in the Ohio state capital. Crew SC took a 4-1 win last April 25 in the only meeting at Mapfre Stadium. Crew SC took a 3-1 in the final meeting between the teams last year, Sept. 12 in Chester, their third road victory in the last four years in the series. Coaches record: Jim Curtin vs. CLB: P5 W1 L4 D Gregg Berhalter vs. : P6 W5 L1 D COLUMBUS CREW SC Columbus Crew SC opened their 216 campaign the way the last one ended, falling 2-1 to the Portland Timbers in an MLS Cup 215 rematch Sunday afternoon at Providence Park. Crew SC are in a tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with points from 1 game. LAST MATCH The Timbers opened the scoring when Diego Valeri's free kick from the left side of the field weaved its way inside the penalty area and past Crew SC goalkeeper Steve Clark. Crew SC pulled a goal back in style, when Federico Higuaín leveled the score in the 68th minute with an acrobatic overhead kick from a ball deflected up in the Timbers box. But the Timbers struck for the winner in the 79th minute when Fanendo Adi scored the game-winner, pouncing on the rebound of Dairon Asprilla s powerful shot that was deflected into his path by goalkeeper Clark. Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter had just one change from the team that he started in MLS Cup 215, when Hector Jimenez lined out in a wide midfield role in place of Justin Meram. COLUMBUS CREW SC ( ): Steve Clark - Harrison Afful, Michael Parkhurst (Conor Casey 85), Gaston Sauro, Waylon Francis - Tony Tchani, Wil Trapp - Ethan Finlay (Cedrick Mabwati 81), Federico Higuain, Hector Jimenez (Justin Meram 67) - Kei Kamara. TEAM NEWS Crew SC suffered a defeat to open the season for a second consecutive year. They unleashed 19 attempts at goal for the match (4 on target), which matched their fourth-most in a single league game last season. For us it was a good opportunity to play in a hostile environment and see where you are right away. Like I said, we had intentions to come control the game and for the most part we accomplished that, said Crew head coach Gregg Berhalter. We could have done a better job of controlling defensive transition, limiting some of the damage there, but it s a good mindset. I think the guys were proactive, they wanted to play, they wanted to push the tempo and I m happy with that. It s not easy to do that in Portland but we certainly did. MLS GAME INFORMATION

4 Federico Higuaín netted the lone Crew SC goal, his second consecutive league game with a goal, after scoring in last year s penultimate game vs. Toronto FC. Higuaín was the center of the Crew SC attack, taking seven attempts at goal, three shy of the club record and matching his MLS career-best. We had a couple of opportunities in the second half that could have been played out better, should have been played out better, and some of the precision that you would expect early in the season, Berhalter said. But in terms of the attitude, in terms of the thought of what we wanted to do, I was happy. It was a third consecutive 2-1 loss to the Timbers for Crew SC, having lost by that scoreline in the only regular season meeting a year ago, then by that result in MLS Cup 215. We knew that they liked to play on the break, and that they re strong on offensive transition, Crew SC midfielder Wil Trapp said. But when we lose the ball in bad spots you have to try to play damage control a little bit at that point. Berhalter ran out no newcomers to the squad to open the season, with only the introduction of Hector Jimenez in place of Justin Meram the lone change from the cup final team. The only new boy in the squad to see minutes in the season opener was Conor Casey, last year with Philadelphia Union. LADELA UNION Philadelphia Union opened their season on the road, suffering a 2- defeat to FC Dallas on Sunday afternoon at Toyota Stadium. Union are in a tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with points from 1 game. LAST MATCH FC Dallas took the lead in the 22nd minute. Fabian Castillo was sprung free by a through ball from Mauro Diaz and finished low past Union goalkeeper Andre Blake. Diaz also assisted on FCD's second goal in the 79th minute, capitalizing on a bad giveaway before feeding Max Urruti for the strike to seal the win. Union manager Jim Curtin ran out new signing Ilsinho in the center of the midfield, with a pair of young newcomers in Keegan Rosenberry and Ken Tribbett on the backline. LADELA UNION ( ): Andre Blake - Keegan Rosenberry, Ken Tribbett, Anderson, Fabinho - Brian Carroll, Vincent Nogueira - Leo Fernandes, Ilsinho (Roland Alberg 6), Chris Pontius (Sebastien Le Toux 72) - C.J. Sapong (Fabian Herbers 83). TEAM NEWS Union have now gone five seasons since beginning the season with a victory, with the opening defeat to FC Dallas coming after draws each of the last two seasons. The only opening day victory in the club s history came in a 2- win vs. Houston to start 211. We knew it would be a difficult day. I thought we were a little timid to start the match. They put us on our heels a little bit. We survived the first 15 minutes but if you look at both goals they came on bad giveaways in bad spots. It s difficult, said Union manager Jim Curtin. Curtin gave starts to five newcomers to open the season, with two on the backline in Keegan Rosenberry, Ken Tribbett and Anderson Conceicao. Ilsinho was given the start in the center of the park, with Chris Pontius opening in a wide left role. New signing Roland Alberg also came on as a substitute on the hour, with rookie Fabian Herbers also a late change. I was happy, for the most part with our younger guys. We made two big mistakes and a team like Dallas will punish you for that. We learned a bunch from this game, Curtin said. Said Rosenberry: It was everything I could have imagined coming into the game. Obviously the bigger picture is that we didn t get the result we wanted, but I think there s some things to build on today. And I think that s what we re going to focus on. Goalkeeper Andre Blake was credited with eight saves, the second-highest total among eight starts in his MLS career (1 vs. New England last Sept. 25). Andre Blake bailed us out a lot tonight, Curtin said. You need that in this league, especially when you go on the road. Union were without two influential performers to injury for the season opener, with both Maurice Edu and Tranquillo Barnetta ruled out for the first match. We had a few guys injured here but we need to have the mindset that the next guy up will do the job. I think we are in a better spot than we were last year. Again, this was a tough test. We ll learn from it and move on to Columbus next week, said Curtin. MLS GAME INFORMATION

36 QUOTEBOOK On MLS season opener against FC Dallas: Dallas, not our best performance, that nobody is happy with, the players the coaching staff the fans, we had a lot of high expectations this year. I think we had a very strong preseason, we have a very good group of guys, good team, and that was not us and that s the consensus. We just had a good long film session and talked through some things that we can grow from and learn but at the same time when you go down and lose a game you want it to be with a fight and being able to look in the mirror and say that was our best effort. On Maurice Edu: We will be losing Maurice Edu for a significant amount of time. There was a fracture found in his leg, frustrating process I think for everybody involved in terms of finding a diagnosis a lot of thing don t always show up on MRIs or bone scans. We finally got to the bottom of it, though, and X-ray revealed there is a fracture there. He will be out for a minimum three months. So it s a big blow to a lot of foundation that we planned to do this year, in terms of having him in No. 6 role, but having said that, Mo hasn t been with us in the preseason; He is a big part of what we want to do, he is a big leader, but at the same time it ll be the next guys that have to step up. On rookie Keegan Rosenberry s MLS debut at right back: Keegan had a lot of positives. He had about as difficult a task as you can have for a rookie. He didn t play like a rookie, I don t think. Again, other things he can do better are the things that guys around him can do better to make his job a little easier like having help inside. On Columbus Crew SC: Greg has a very good team, first and foremost. They are very disciplined. Their approach is to build out of the back they play a good attractive brand of soccer. Again, it s a tough environment; it s a teams home opener, so you have to try an use that to your advantage. So maybe a team like them throws their outside-backs forward so aggressively, we have to be disciplined and we also have to when we do get our chances, because again, Columbus does concede chances we have to take advantage of them. We can t have any in-between like we had a little bit in the Dallas game. On their style of play: I would say Columbus builds even more than Dallas does out of the back with the two center backs being split wide, their outside backs are a little higher up the field. Dallas did a version of that, they threw [Atiba] Harris just on one side forward, and they had [Maynor] Figueroa stay back so a little different shape. Their wide guys, they asked them to come inside, a great deal and obviously they have the outlet in Kei Kamara. He is a handful; you have to do a good job, win the aerial game with him, they re a team that gets the ball wide and whips in as many crosses as possible to Kei. On Tranquillo Barnetta s status: He s running again. He will kind of be week-to-week situation, but at the same time we have to be smart with his knee; he knows his body well, and our doctors do a great job, our rehab people do a great job, and we ll assess it. We ll talk with Tranquillo everyday and continue to see what s best for that situation. 3
