COLUMBUS CREW SC vs PHILADELPHIA UNION MAPFRE STADIUM, Columbus, Ohio April 25, 2015 (WEEK 8, MLS Game #71) 7:30 p.m. ET (TWCSN-OH; TCN-Phi) A key match in the Eastern Conference is ahead when Columbus Crew SC play host to Philadelphia Union at home on Saturday evening. Crew SC returned home last weekend and extended their undefeated streak to three games, rolling to a 3-0 win against Orlando City SC. Union saw their brief two-game undefeated run come to an end, returning home themselves and falling 2-1 to the New England Revolution in Chester. REFEREE: Chris Penso. Union s last win in the series was a 3-0 victory June 5, 2013 at PPL Park. Crew SC have never lost to Union in Columbus. They have won five of six meetings there all-time, with one draw, including both matches in the Ohio state capitol a year ago. Coaches record: Gregg Berhalter vs. PHI: P3 W3 L0 D0 Jim Curtin vs. COL P2 W0 L2 D0 COLUMBUS CREW SC Columbus Crew SC extended their undefeated run to three matches, rolling to a 3-0 win against a 10-man Orlando City SC on Saturday evening at Mapfre Stadium. Crew SC are in a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 8 points from 6 matches. LAST MATCH Crew SC broke through in the 32nd minute. Ethan Finlay found space to the left of the Orlando defense and slid a ball inside toward Federico Higuain at the near post, who deftly flicked the ball around his back leg and into the opposite corner of the OCSC goal. Orlando City went a man down in the 34th minute when Rafael Ramos was ejected by referee Ricardo Salazar after flying into a challenge with Crew SC defender Waylon Francis with his studs raised high. Crew SC finally took advantage in the 55th minute. Kei Kamara caught Cristian Higuita dribbling in his own box and won a challenge to send the ball rolling to Justin Meram, who took a dribble and pounded a hard shot past City goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts from close range. The lead was 3-0 just five minutes later. Higuain slid a long ball directly through the Orlando defense to spring Kamara behind. As Ricketts closed, the striker popped a perfectly weighted chip over the goalkeeper's head for the final scoreline. Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter made one change to the team that played to a scoreless draw with the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Waylon Francis came into the back four in place of Chris Klute. COLUMBUS CREW SC ( ): Steve Clark - Hernan Grana, Michael Parkhurst, Emanuel Pogatetz, Waylon Francis (Chris Klute 65) - Mohammed Saeid, Tony Tchani - Ethan Finlay (Hector Jimenez 79), Federico Higuain, Justin Meram (Kristinn Steindorsson 70) - Kei Kamara. MLS GAME INFORMATION

TEAM NEWS Crew stretched their undefeated run to three games with a first victory in that time, their first victory since the March 14 home win vs. Toronto FC. I think there s a tendency after a long travel period where the next week is a little sluggish. It s residual fatigue from the travel and I think we did well with that. You saw some guys were fatigued a little, but overall I think that the team did extremely well coming out with a lot of energy, said Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter. Kei Kamara scored his fourth goal of the season tied for second in the MLS Golden Boot standings and added his first assist of the season. Kamara has been involved in four of Crew SC s last five goals over their last three matches. Federico Higuain scored a goal and added an assist, both his first of the season. It was the 13th time in his MLS career (in 76 games), he has been involved in two or more goals in the same game. He was amazing. I think that was one of the better performances since I ve been around seeing him play. We know he has that in him and [it] was a good night for him, Berhalter said. Playing in the wide attacking roles, Justin Meram and Ethan Finlay continued their production. Meram scored his second goal this season his first coming in the March 14 win vs. Toronto FC, while Finlay added his third assist of the season. "I think [the Crew SC front four] did a good job. You always want a little bit more, that s the nature of the game. But overall, I think they did well, said Berhalter. Ethan [Finlay] had a couple opportunities in the first half to score, which we know he can put those in. But they did a good job, I was really happy with their work rate and how they never gave up on plays, they kept going. It was a second consecutive clean sheet for Crew SC goalkeeper Steve Clark. They have not been beaten for a goal in 206 minutes, currently the ninth-longest shutout run in MLS this season. The whole team defensively played really well. It started with the guys up top setting the tone, putting them under pressure, Berhalter said. You [saw] how many balls they had to clear haphazardly in the first half. It was really good. And the center backs organizing together with the outside backs, they did a good job. Waylon Francis made his first start for Crew SC in three matches, coming back in at left back for the first time since March 14. [Francis] did a good job. To be honest, it was a tough decision to start him over Chris [Klute] because Chris has been doing well also Berhalter said. But we wanted more offense out of that position and we think Waylon gives us that. Waylon, for being off for a little bit, he had a good performance. PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union saw their brief two-game undefeated streak come to an end, the New England Revolution coming back for a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at PPL Park. Union are in a tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 6 points from 8 matches. LAST MATCH The home side took the lead in the 42nd minute. After Maurice Edu was taken down from a bombing run up the center of the field about 30 yards from goal, Cristian Maidana hit a perfectly placed left-footed free kick just inside the post and past the outstretched arm of Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. The Revolution found their equalizer in the 64th minute. Teal Bunbury, who had come on three minutes earlier as a substitute, drove in a low cross from the right which a completely unmarked Charlie Davies turned home at the far post. Twelve minutes later, Bunbury gave the Revs the lead, this time on the receiving end of a great cross. Substitute Diego Fagundez this time set it up, Bunbury finishing from the heart of the area. Union manager Jim Curtin made three changes to the team that came back for a 1-1 draw with New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. Zach Pfeffer, Cristian Maidana and C.J. Sapong all came into the midfield, in place of Eric Ayuk Mbu, Vincent Nogueira and Andrew Wenger. PHILADELPHIA UNION ( ): John McCarthy - Sheanon Williams, Maurice Edu, Steven Vitoria, Raymon Gaddis - Zach Pfeffer (Conor Casey 78), Michael Lahoud - Sebastien Le Toux, Cristian Maidana (Brian Carroll 63), C.J. Sapong (Andrew Wenger 63) - Fernando Aristeguieta. TEAM NEWS Union saw their brief two-game winless run come to an end with the home defeat by New England. Union have just one win on the league campaign; they have lost two of their last three games at PPL Park. We have to get on a run and that s something that we haven t been able to do this year. We need to put really good performance together and get three points because at home you can t afford to drop all three points, said Union manager Jim Curtin. Said defender Maurice Edu: I think I d still be happy if we gave up less goals. If we keep clean sheets and put ourselves in a good position, we should push and win games. We gave up a goal on a counterattack, which we try to score goals on counterattacks, so to give up a goal on a counterattack it s a little bit disappointing for us. MLS GAME INFORMATION

Cristian Maidana scored Union s lone goal from a free kick, his first goal in MLS since May 31 of last season, and his first MLS goal directly from a free kick. Maidana was making his first start since the March 14 match vs. Real Salt Lake. He had missed three games through injury before coming on as a substitute in each of the two previous matches. When you think back to last year when he had the stretch when he was in form, he was able to go 90 minutes, Curtin said. That s what we re looking to get back to [because] we re at our best when he s on the field. That is a certainty. C.J. Sapong was also making his first start since the season opener, when he was forced off at halftime after suffering a blow to the face. Sapong had made three consecutive appearances off the substitute s bench. I knew going into the game that I was subbing those two guys around the 60-minute mark. With the thought of three games in nine days, it didn t work out, said Curtin. Obviously they scored right after the subs were made so that s what everyone is going to point to, but it was a one-on-one play that, as a defender, sometimes you get beat. We learn from it and have to move on. Vincent Nogueira missed out on the match after suffering an ankle injury in the midweek contest at New York City FC, when he came off of the field in the 63rd minute. After moving to the substitutes bench for the NYCFC match, Zach Pfeffer regained his starting role for the New England game, playing 78 minutes in a holding midfield role. It was a newer spot for Zach to play a little more defensive. But at the same time it was a game where I thought we would have more of the ball than we did, to be honest. We weren t on it and when we were on it, we were sloppy with it, said Curtin. I think we put an attacking lineup on the field with Pfeffer and [Maidana] but we still didn t master being clean with our passes and being sharper on the ball. Said Pfeffer: I was sitting a little deeper but I m comfortable in any spot really in the midfield or the attacking third, on the wings. I was comfortable there I had no issues with it at all... I will play wherever the coaches need me to play. We had to work out some kinks here and there but overall went pretty well. MLS GAME INFORMATION

Columbus Crew SC vs. Philadelphia Union MAPFRE Stadium April 25, :30 PM ET Comcast SportsNet MATCH OVERVIEW Saturday s match will be the 13th all-time between the Philadelphia Union and Columbus Crew. The Union are against the Crew in MLS history. The Union is still looking to get their first win in Columbus, where they are in club history, making Mapfre Stadium one of the most challenging atmospheres the Union has faced in the MLS. The last time the Union met Columbus was in February of this year, when the Union faced them in the preseason for the IMG SunCoast Pro classic. o The Union went on to win the game 5-3 in penalties, allowing them to win the group and advance to the Championship game of the tournament, which they would also win. The two teams capped their 2014 MLS season last year in a game that marked both club s regularseason finale. The Crew would go on to win at home 2-1, with the Union s loss the result of a controversial goal in the 90th minute. Columbus sits in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, the Union are in eighth. 35 Last match - PHILADELPHIA UNION - (1-4-3) - 6 points 8th in Eastern Conference After a scoreless 40 minutes that saw the Union and the Revs miss good opportunities, Cristian Maidana would break the dead-lock with a superb free-kick from around 30 yards out that he expertly curled inside the post and past New England s Bobby Shuttleworth. o The free-kick was given by the ref after Edu s run down the middle left his former USMNT teammate Jermaine Jones with no option but to foul him o It was Maidana s first goal of the season The fate of the game would change drastically when Teal Bunbury entered as a sub for the Revolutions in the 61 st minute. o He was responsible for bringing the game to 1-1, with a perfectly placed cross that assisted Charlie Davies equalizer in the 64 th. o Only 12 minutes later, he was on the receiving end of a cross from fellow sub Diego Fagundez, which he slotted past McCarthy near post to give the Revs the lead. The Union nearly equalized it up again in the 77 th, when Shuttleworth was forced to make a great save on a Maurice Edu long-shot. Lee Nguyen and London Woodberry frantically made goal-line clearances on follow-up shots by Aristeguieta and Edu, but the Union were unable to come back. In this building, for whatever reason, too, when we give up a goal you can sense it throughout the stadium, and on the field, that there s a here we go again mentality and, until we shake that, it s on us, and we re going to have to deal with it when teams come in here. So, it s something that it s my job to get corrected and move this team forward. Curtin on getting better possession of the ball: If we re a back four that just stays back and never gets advanced, most teams are only having one forward that splits our center backs and if our outside backs aren t getting forward we re never making the other team defend. And we need guys that it s a lot of different things. Guys need to want the ball in tight spots in the midfield, and guys need to be comfortable at holding it up up front. So, it s a full team thing, but it starts just by our team shape. Curtin on Columbus Crew SC: They re a team that s in good form. The tape of the last game is a little tricky because Orlando had the early red card. But listen, Columbus is, for me, one of the top possession teams in our league. I think Berhalter is one of the best young coaches in our league. He s a guy that I text with and talk with and I respect a great deal does a great job with what he has. Curtin on the health of goalkeeper Andre Blake and his status for Saturday: He s getting closer to being himself again, that guy that we saw at the start of preseason. But still not quite there yet. Obviously, you d like to get him a game here, but we re not in a position where we can experiment with anything. He s available for selection against Columbus and we ll make a decision as the week goes along. It s a possibility though. Fernando Aristeguieta on the biggest difference in MLS: The most difficult thing has been the contact that the referees allow. It s something that s hard because sometimes in Venezuela, where I m from, you have the same contact but you ll win a foul and if you win a foul you re getting something for the team. Here, you receive more (contact) and you don t get anything from it.

UNION vs. COLUMBUS CREW SC History against Columbus Crew With eight losses all-time, Columbus Crew SC has been the Union s most difficult opponent in the league. The Union has suffered more losses against Columbus than any other team in the MLS. While the Union has never won in Columbus, they did recently beat them in the pre-season to advance to the IMG SunCoast Pro classic championship, a tournament they would ultimately win. A Lost Opportunity against New England The Union will look to regain ground in the Eastern Conference by putting up a strong performance at Columbus. It was clear that exhaustion from a schedule that included three games in one week factored into the Union s loss against New England at home, as the Union were unable to hold onto their lead going into the second half, and fatigue resulted in giving up a great chance to end the difficult week on a high note and record a result. A win against the Crew would put the Union into a solid spot in the middle of the table and playoff contention. Matchup against Columbus Having just seen the ability of the team to click against NYCFC but suffering a setback against New England, the Union will be eager to bounce back against Columbus on Saturday and regain confidence going into the start of May. Kei Kamara is tied for second in the MLS Golden Boot standings, with 4 goals to his name. Neutralizing him will be a key consideration of the Union s back-line. Columbus has a three-game winning streak alive vs. Philly. The Union s last win against Columbus came at PPL Park with a 3-0 victory on June 5, 2013 Columbus is coming off a 3-0 win to expansion-side Orlando SC last weekend, a game in which Kamara tallied one goal and notched another assist. Union Preseason in Review The Union went throughout the 2015 Preseason, including going undefeated in their last four games en route to winning the IMG Suncoast Pro Classic in Bradenton, Fla. While at IMG, the Union defeated Costa Rica U23s (3-0), London United (6-0), Columbus Crew (1-1, 5-3) and New York Red Bulls (3-1). The Union beat New York to win the tournament s championship. Newcomer Aristeguieta and Andrew Wenger led the team with four goals each during preseason. Aristeguieta scored in all three games he played, while Wenger s brace over New York helped win the IMG Tournament.
