4 Reports 1st XI The 1st XI were looking to bounce back after a disappointing result in the holiday fixture against Sydney Grammar by continuing their winning ways in the CAS competition. The fixture was a local derby against Waverley, a notoriously physical side who have been having a relatively solid CAS campaign. The game couldn t have got off to a worse start - straight from the kickoff, Cranbrook were caught in possession deep in their own half and we were made to pay, with the score being 1-0 to Waverley after 10 seconds. As Coach Madigan said in the pre-game talk, Waverley were going to come straight at us right from the get-go, and that was exactly what happened. Cranbrook had a brilliant chance to equalise almost straight away with some beautiful work on the right wing from Simon Rouse but Cranbrook was unable to convert. Waverley were constantly threatening, and it wasn t too long before they buried another few goals. The half-time whistle couldn t have come any sooner. Knowing that levelling the scores would be extremely difficult, the main aim was to prevent further damage. The second half began with much more intensity from the team, but effort couldn t result in goals. The Cranbrook defence managed to keep out a number of chances, with goalkeeper Marco Ferretti making countless saves to keep the scoreline the same as the 1st half. Unfortunately, Waverley managed to score another goal, but the team can be proud of their efforts in the 2nd half. A disappointing loss, but the team must bounce back and move on this week in training for the game against one of the CAS football powerhouses, Trinity. 9A Waverly looked strong and determined to win their first game of the season, but still Cranbrook had high hopes and we started the first half with a quick goal from Gabriel Antoniades. With Cranbrook excited, Waverly took charge and came back with a quick return from sloppy defending of a corner by Cranbrook, leaving the score 1-1 as the first half came to an end. The second half started with an amazing save by the Goalkeeper, Jack Lucas, saving a cracking shot by a Waverly striker, leading to a Waverly corner. The corner came in hard as one of the Waverly players volleyed the ball straight to Jack, who once again saved it, knocking the ball into the air, to which another Waverley player volleyed the ball back to the goal, being saved by Jack again, however, at this stage the pressure was too much as another Waverley player knocked the ball into the bottom right hand corner. At this stage Cranbrook started to lower their heads as Waverly scored again in the closing minutes of the game, leaving the score at 1-3 Waverly. Jack played a magnificent game and definitely won Man of the Match. 9B First game back into the term and the team seemed confident. Goalkeeper Carl Yan produced some terrific saves during the entire match but unfortunately early into the first half, Cranbrook let in a goal. Eager to prove themselves in the 2nd half and get back in the game, the boys tried their hardest but sadly, managed to let in yet another goal. The game ended with the scored being 2-0 in favour of Waverly. The team was disappointed with the result but now know what to do next week in order to come out on top with a win. 9C The first half started off well, with Cranbrook controlling the midfield and our centre backs, Tom Brand and Ben Wilson, making great clearances and tackles. Unfortunately, on the stroke of halftime, a scramble in the box lead to the ball being bundled over the line by Waverley. Supersub, Zac Serafim, terrorised the opposition in the right wing and pulled back a goal through a well-placed shot to the far post. Shortly after Zac scored again from outside the box that went through the keepers legs! From then on there were a further three goals being scored by Sam Lane, a penalty by Archie Anderson and Ben Wilson who sent in a spectacular long shot from outside the box. Special mentions go to Red Mobbs, Blake Corry and Amar Elmowy, who did spectacularly in working to get the ball to the front line. 9D Today the 9D s came out for their first game of term with a positive attitude, despite missing 4 players. The match started off with Waverly scoring a quick goal running through the defence but we instantly came back with Zach Serafim s goal from his fast run down the wing. Jeffery Tang also managed to reach the back of the net from a long shot outside the box. Cranbrook lead at half time but we started to lose our composure as we were missing four key players. This really cost us as Waverly were able to score three goals and take the win from us. The final score was 2-4 Waverly and Zach Serafim earned man of the match because the chances he made. 8A The 8a s versed Waverly last Saturday and came off with a disappointing 2-0 loss. After coming back from a great Kanga Cup performance we were unable to score. Steven Sohn hit the cross bar twice and Daniel Padoani had 2 near misses. We were having a good first half until the rain came and I think it got the better of us.

5 8B The 8B s enjoyed a very satisfying win against Waverley. We won the first half 4-0. Alex Randal scored three brilliant goals, one of which was from the goal line, using the outside of his foot to bend the ball over the keepers head. Tom Youngman scored two goals and Jackson Read scored one goal. Gabrielle Roche scored a beautiful goal, which was from outside the box, dipping over the keeper s head. Who says a defender can t score? Pierce Caponas scored a great header from Alex Randal s cross. Waverly luck turned around in the last five minutes, scoring two goals as Cranbrook focused on attacking. Overall the 8B s were very proud of their result and efforts with the final score being 8-2 8C Cranbrook had a difficult game as they battled Waverly as well as the rain. We had a 1-0 loss with Waverly just breaking through. Seamus McGrath gave some big kicks in defence. Connor Stratis and Zac Hafner made some good attempts as strikers but were unlucky with their shots. It was a close game but with the team coming back from holiday they have some training to do. 8D While the 8Ds looked promising at the start of the game, four weeks off training meant that our fitness was lacking, so we couldn t maintain the energy displayed early in the match throughout the game. Wales and Seb showed promise up front but couldn t convert any opportunities. Despite some great saves from Sam, one bounced off the post and in and another snuck past to bring the score to 2-0 at half time. In the second half, 8D recruits Simon and Benji worked together to score an excellent goal. Benji, Alex and Seb continued to make some great runs but again we struggled to score. Waverley scored two more goals to bring the final score to E This was a valiant effort from the 8Es who started with only nine players due to absences and sickness. Benji, Flynn and Caleb were working terrifically together up front with some excellent passes, however they were unable to score any goals. Gus, Nico and Sheng showed strength in defence so that by halftime the score was still 0-0. Early in the second half, goalie Caleb made an excellent save, however the ball dribbled from his hands and Waverley managed to score. The boys were understandably tired with no subs and in the second half they didn t have as many opportunities to score. Waverley scored again in the final minutes to bring the score to 2-0.

6 Cranbrook Football Tour to Kanga Cup Under 15 s From the 5th till the 10th of July, Cranbrook s Year 7, 8 and 9 football teams competed in Australia s NSR Kanga Cup, hosted in the nation s capital city of Canberra. The 9 s were placed in the Shield Division, and played seven games in total. A mix-and-matched group of players, the year 9 side had boys from numerous teams including the A s and B s, right down to Player s Club. Despite this, the boys played well, exceeding expectations, and ended up pulling off a win and a draw. Unfortunate enough to have two easy wins snatched away, Cranbrook suffered a somewhat embarrassing defeat against an easy side in their first match, conceding four goals during the second half after being up two nil and dominating in possession. Numerous blunders in defense and many missed opportunities at scoring, the boys conceded heavily without being able to level the game. However this proved to be a lesson learnt when Cranbrook bounced back in their second match to win comfortably 2-1 against a much stronger side. A muchimproved defense and more coordinated midfield struck hard in what was one of the best performances of the tour for the 9A s. However the boys failed to translate this into more wins as they went on to concede another four defeats, most of which were arguably dominated by the decisive Cranbrook side. On their final day the 9A s played an entertaining game against fellow Sydney-siders Pagewood. The boys dominated, scoring three goals while playing strong and consistently in possession, although two loose goals were let in due to collapse of shape. In the last minute of the game, Cranbrook was up 3-2, only for a deflection to land at the feet of a Pagewood midfielder, who took a shot that just slipped by the keeper with twenty seconds left on the clock. Although it was infuriating to have yet another well-deserved win taken away, the Cranbrook side left the ground in good spirits, and soon forgot about Pagewood s narrow escape on an entertaining bus ride back to base. All in all, the 9A s were considered to be the unluckiest team of the competition. The boys learnt an important lesson from their coach Ben that sometimes the better team doesn t always win. In an age group such as the under 15 s, more direct football such as playing the long ball at every opportunity, a tactic that was used by every team encountered, proved to be an effective style of play. However the boys thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and had a great time on tour with each other. Many thanks to Canberra Grammar School for providing their boarding house and kitchen, and the Cranbrook coaching staff for providing us with such an excellent opportunity. Thanks for a fantastic trip boys, hope to see you all there next year. Sean Fitz-Gerald Under 14 s Kanga Cup was a great success for the year 8 s. The team coached by Shane Lockhart played 6 matches which ended in 3 wins and 3 losses. Our first game was against a Victorian premier league team; we suffered a disappointing loss, which gave the team a huge wake up call. Our next match was a much improved performance winning 3-2. Special mention to Domenic Citarella who scored an amazing half volley from 30 yards to win the game. On the second day we played one of our best games of the entire tournament. Unfortunately, due to a controversial call we went down 5-4. The next day we had 2 matches, the first was against a Korean school based in Brisbane, we lost 4-1, but had a much improved second half. Later, we versed the Canberra Skillaroos, we dominated most of the game and came away with a 3-0 win. In our final match, it was a CAS derby. The much anticipated game against Trinity didn t disappoint, the whole team put in a mighty effort to come away with another 3-0 victory. Well done to Steven Sohn for grabbing a double. At the end of the tournament, the team finished 3rd in the pool just missing out on the finals. On behalf of the team, I would like to thank our coach Shane Lockhart who was a wonderful mentor to all the boys and the reason why we had such great success. Jack McLoughlin Under 13 s During the school holidays on a cold Sunday morning 15 excited year 7 boys bundled into the mini-bus bound for Canberra with Renato our inspiring coach. Speeding down the highway with ear-shattering music we were heading for the Kanga Cup, the biggest junior football competition in the southern hemisphere. First stop was the opening ceremony. We marched proudly out as Cranbrook School to the screams of the crowd, waving and jumping at the cameras.it was our own World Cup. Then it was off to Canberra Grammar where we boarded for the following 5 days. The games room became an immediate honeypot and had all the boys streaming in. The food was fantastic bacon and eggs, hash brown, scrambled eggs, for breakfast. Spaghetti, pizza, Indian, kebabs and steak for dinner. Our rooms were great with our own heater. The only problem was the everpresent Mr Madigan crushing our efforts to stay up beyond midnight. I ve avoided talking about the football. We had some great games and tried our guts out. But playing against the best state teams from New South Wales and Victoria was a formidable challenge. We played with great enthusiasm and courage to the best our abilities. Despite our best efforts we were hammered in most matches. We are keen to go again next year with higher ambitions. We would like to thank our coach Renato, and the many other coaches and teachers who gave up there time to lead this great expedition. Theo Whittaker

9 Code of conduct Players Play by the rules and in a spirit of good sportsmanship Play for the fun of it and not just to please parents and coaches. Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other players, deliberately fouling or provoking an opponent, and throwing equipment are neither acceptable nor permitted in any sport. Work hard both for yourself and your team. Your team s performance will benefit, so will you. Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player. Co-operate with your coach, team mates and opponents. Without them there would be no game. In the event of a player, or athlete being sent-off during a CAS fixture, it is the responsibility of that boy s Headmaster at his discretion to determine the penalty. It is generally understood among Headmasters, however, that the boy will serve at least one week s suspension from participating in the CAS competition. Parents Focus upon the boy s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the game. This assists the boy in setting realistic goals related to his ability by reducing emphasis on winning. Teach your son that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of the game is accepted without undue disappointment. Encourage your always to play according to the rules of the game. Never ridicule or yell at your son or another boy for making a mistake or losing a game. Remember boys are involved in organised sports for their benefit and enjoyment, not yours. Remember that children learn best from example. Applaud good play by both teams. If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than question the official s judgement and honesty in public. Remember most officials give their time and effort voluntarily for your son s benefit. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. Recognise the value and importance of coaches. They give of their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your son and other boys and deserve your support. Spectators We encourage boys to support their school teams and to be dressed in the school s uniform while doing so. We expect barracking to be enthusiastic but not to be fanatical or designed to heckle or belittle or disturb the opponents. For example, barracking, for or against, during a kick at goal is always bad sportsmanship. Boys should be encouraged to barrack for their school rather than for an individual team member. Booing, whistling, playing or beating musical instruments are in bad taste and wholly unacceptable. Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence or rough or illegal play. Encroaching onto the field of play, the shouting out of suggestions for players, referees or umpires to hear are not allowed. It is never acceptable to express disapproval of a referee s or umpire s decision no matter whether the referee be adult or schoolboy. There is a complete ban on all alcoholic drinks at grounds where games between Associated Schools teams are being played. We expect our players to be modest in success and generous in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion. Good play, by our own school and by the opposing school, should be applauded willingly and openly. At all times spectators should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave. We look to adults (parents, Old Boys and other spectators) to set an example by their self-control at matches.
