2 HESWALL S HAPPY HAUL The West Cheshire League continues to dominate the Cheshire Amateur Cup. This season s Umbro Cheshire Amateur Cup winners are Heswall, having defeated league rivals Cammell Laird Reserves, four goals to nil, in a Friday night final held at a rain swept Rivacre Park. Both sides had created chances before Heswall s fortieth minute opener when Lee Cairns latched on to a free kick to send the ball into the net. Seconds earlier Cammell Laird had hit the post and almost levelled matters a minute after going behind only for their corner to be scrambled off the line. In the end that proved to be as good as it got for Lairds who fell further behind just before the break when the unmarked Jock Harrison planted a perfect header past Aaron Kinnear. The number 7 on the cover is Ashville s title winning manager, Jason Aldcroft, who turned out for the Villa Park outfit in their recent game at Chester Nomads Boughton Hall ground. Whilst the game didn t end as Jason would have wanted (Ashville lost 3-2) he put in a c r e d i t a b l e p e r f o r m a n c e. Certainly Nomads left-back knew he had been in a game!

5 WILL THE REAL WIDNES TOWN PLEASE STAND UP! We are the original and always will be! So the tweet proclaimed on Widnes Town s Twitter postings. This happened in response to this posting on the North West Counties website on 7 March 2012: The League Management Committee has received an approach from Widnes Town FC, who have indicated that they wish to apply to join the NWCFL at the start of next season. The club is newly formed, and the club owners are looking to develop the club into a community based football facility. As well as a first team, they are looking to introduce additional teams including potentially a Reserve Team, a Ladies Team and Junior Teams ranging from ages 8 to 18 year old. As you can see from the clipping below, this has caused some consternation in the Halton area. As it happens the application did not make the required deadline.

6 WEST CHESHIRE SHORTS The League has received a number of applications to join the Third Division and ground inspections have been arranged were necessary. Teams applying: Gateacre (Hedgefield Road), Helsby Reserves (Helsby Community Sports Club), Kelma (Unilever), Pinewoods (Drummond Road), Redgate Rovers (Clarence House, Freshfield), and South Liverpool Reserves (Jericho Lane). Just two months ago the Newsletter was celebrating the retirement of Bronze Social legend, Mike Hilton, who had retired as club secretary after 45 years of club involvement. So it comes as quite a shock to confirm the resignation of Bronze from the League. Under rule 14B, the club have been fined 100 and a decision about the remaining unfulfilled fixtures is to be made at a forthcoming Management meeting. In the Youth Division Allerton have also resigned. The West Cheshire League continues to produce football folk who reach the higher echelons of the game. Congratulations to West Cheshire List Referee, Neil Davies who has been promoted to the Football League line. Old friends, Runcorn Town, bowed out of the FA Carlsberg Vase at the Fourth Round stage for the second successive season, with Northern League side Billingham Synthonia recording a 2-1 victory at Pavilions to move into the last 16. The first club to claim promotion in the West Cheshire League this season was Third Division outfit, South Liverpool. As one of the many who laments the loss of all the great days at Holly Park, I would like to add my congratulations to the South. Stop Press: Helsby are also promoted to the 2 nd Division!

7 MARINE MUSTER MUCH MUFTI! Marine have announced that the club has collected an amazing 5,000 items of football kit for Kit Aid, a charity that helps under privileged children and adults in over 30 countries across the world. The campaign exceeded has all expectations. Marine Chairman Leary said: Paul This really is an amazing achievement by our football club and shows what we can do when we put our minds to it. It has been a great community exercise that has caught the imagination and support of so many people across Merseyside. This has been a great cause to be involved in and we are so pleased that we shall give so much enjoyment to thousands of adults and children around the world who will have a football kit for the first time in their lives. Boys and girls football clubs have also made substantial donations, including 160 by Princes Villa near Ellesmere Port. Altogether, 2,336 shirts have been handed in (representing De la Salle, Croxteth, present 108 kits to the Crosby based club. over 100 different clubs), 1,276 shorts, 545 pairs of socks, 318 pairs of boots and 527 other items, including a bag of referee s kit with flags, whistle and yellow and red cards. Kit Aid has not only helped to further enhance the reputation of Marine as a community club but it has also united Merseyside with a common cause. They hope to help with the charity for many years to come.

8 PUSKAS AT SOUTH LIVERPOOL! I am grateful to Jose Damiao for the following: When Garston's Bankfield House community centre organised a fundraiser in 1967, they decided to aim big. Bankfield House, a community centre in Garston, Merseyside., organised a fundraising celebrity football match. They secured the services of several locally based players: Dave Hickson, Billy Bingham, Malcolm Allison and Billy Liddell. They also telegrammed Real Madrid, to ask if Ferenc Puskas might be available. A few days later they received his response: "All I wait is you send me plane ticket." Ferenc Puskas, one of the greatest footballers in the history of the game, star and captain of perhaps the finest ever international side, three times European Cup winner and five times a finalist, was coming to Holly Park! The interest generated by Puskas's presence resulted in a bumper crowd 10,000 people were inside the ground, with as many again said to have been locked outside. On the day, Liddell XI beat Puskas XI 5-3, the guest of honour scoring all of his side's goals including one, reported the Echo, "from his famous banana shot". In the end the match raised 1,100.

9 Cammell Laird are seeking more help to assist in the day to day running of the football club. All posts are on a voluntary basis but will include free entry for staff on match days. Help is required with: LAIRD S LOOKING FOR HELP Relief Turnstile Operator: Available on match days, tasks include dealing with cash, recording programme sales etc. Crown Safety Stewards: To provide ground and crowd control at all home matches. Kit Person: To ensure the pristine turnout of players Kits and equipment for matches. Must be available to travel to away matches as necessary. Fans Liaison Officer: To develop and co-ordinate a fans database and organise trips and events on behalf of the club. Junior Supporter Co-ordinator: To promote the club to young people, setting up a junior section, to be available to attend to match day mascots and junior supporters from visiting clubs etc. A Criminal Records Bureau clearance will be necessary. HESWALL 0 ASHVILLE 2 Congratulation go to Ashville who wrapped up their first Division 1 title in 44 years by overcoming Heswall, 2-0, on Wednesday 4 April. The new champions had to wait until the early stages of the 2 nd half before breaking through a determined home defence when Danny Edwards smashed the ball into the net. Lee Hammond s late penalty sealed a victory that saw Jason Aldcroft s side complete a historic achievement by becoming Division 1 title winners just 12 months after securing the Division 2 title. Final to be played at Kirklands, Tuesday 1 May 2012, 7pm: Ashville v Heswall. Ray Condliffe s report: A well struck double from Ashville Reserves captain and full back, Mark Howell, spearheaded his side s 4-0 interval lead over New Brighton Reserves in Monday s Wirral Amateur Cup Final. Robbie Courtney and Peter Wright were also on target while Liam Jameson struck twice late on for New Brighton as Ashville eventually ran out 4-2 winners.
