1 Saddleland McIvor Road Bendigo Vic MEMBERS OF THE MONTH This month s award of Member of the Month is being given to sisters Louise and Steffie Conway. Steffie has been a member of Bealiba Pony Club for quite a few years while Louise took some time off due to study commitments. Louise started competing again and I think that when she saw how much fun Steff was having at Bealiba she just had to join up again. Both Steffie and Louise have taken on young, highly strung thoroughbred mares and with the knowledge that they have gained through attending rallies and clinics have worked hard to get them to a very good standard. The girls have always enjoyed Dressage, which is a great start to getting a horse to work on the flat. They also love their jumping wether it is in the Show Jumping ring or out on the Cross Country Course. These girls are prepared to do whatever is asked of them which may include games, flat teams, polocrosse or tent pegging. They are both very good riders with wonderful attitudes and while they only have one horse, believe that the horse should be an all-rounder. I am always so impressed when I see the girls at a competition; their horses look amazing with beautiful shiny coats and in great condition. The girls gear is always matching and in well oiled. Steff and Louise also present themselves to a very high standard; they look great in their Bealiba uniforms, it makes me proud that they are members of our club. The young thoroughbreds are ridden in open snaffle bridles; while they sometimes are a little full of themselves (due to both girls currently attending Ballarat University) they saddle up, hop on and work them. I have been told that these girls ride every opportunity that they get, and it shows. Steff and Louise you are wonderful role models for our club, your bubbly personalities, beautiful smiles and friendly nature make you worthy recipients of Members of the Month. Road rules for horse riders Under the road rules, horses are regarded, basically, as a vehicle and riders are subject to the same road rules as apply to other drivers. However, there are also some specific additional rules: Horse riders under the age of 18 riding on a road, footpath or any road-related area must wear a helmet. Obviously for optimum safety it is best to wear a helmet at all times. If you are riding two-abreast with another rider, you must not ride more than 1.5 m apart. Horses are allowed on footpaths and nature strips, unless specifically prohibited. Lights on animal drawn vehicles - when ridden at night or in conditions of reduced visibility they must display a white light on each side at the front of the vehicle, a red light on each side at the rear (visible for 200 m) and be fitted with a red reflector towards the rear of each side of the vehicle.

5 SHOW SEASON The show season usually commences after Melbourne Royal Show which is held late in September. A number of Bealiba Pony Club members have been out and about competing at these shows. Some of the local shows have been running for over 100 years and rely on support from locals to keep them going, so if you get the opportunity to compete or just to go along and have a look do so. You can learn a lot from watching horses being judged in the ring or even behind the scenes where horses are being prepared. At the St. Arnaud Show Kellie Barnett and Abby- Rose Fry took part in the Open Show Events on Saturday. These girls also saddled up for the Pony Club Ring on the Sunday and both were lucky enough to take home some ribbons. Sarah and Renee Wilkes took part in the Fun Ring and also collected a number of ribbons. Samantha Palmer was out in the EFA Show Jumping which is a great opportunity to get some show jumping practice. She looked very professional on her big horse Roo. On Saturday evening a number of Bealiba Pony Club members took part in the Novelties. They were Kellie Barnett, Katrina & Kylie Scilini, Tarah & Corey Youngson, and Katelyn & Alicia Billinghurst. These riders had lots of fun, as they always do when doing novelties or games. At the Donald Show Kellie Barnett & Abby-Rose Fry took part in the EFA Show Jumping with both girls doing well, although I was told that Macca and Flicka thought that one of the big rides was going to EAT THEM! Katrina & Kylie Scilini took part in the Pony Club events and took home some big sashes. Tarah Youngson went to the Boort Show taking part in the Show Jumping events. Being part of a country show is lots of fun, often you get the chance to compete against different riders and meet judges that you may not have come across before. It is all a bit of fun and I know that the Show Societies appreciate your support. Faye Barnett. 8 What would you do?...would you have made the same choice?... At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: 'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection... Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?' The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.' Then he told the following story: Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they ll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps. I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.' Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!' Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!' Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. B y the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball, the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay' Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third! Shay, run to third!' As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!' Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team 'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'. Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!
