3 Mr. Guerena s Class Mr.Guerena, also known as Mr.G is a 7th and 8th grade teacher here at Balboa, and this year will be his 8th year teaching. He became a history teacher, because his grandma used to tell him tons of history stories about the past. When college came around he loved history, and became a teacher. In his 8th grade class he ll start teaching the age of exploration and end at the reconstruction after the civil war! By Marah White Academics Mrs. Zgliniec s Class Mrs. Zgliniec is a 7th and 8th grade language arts teacher here at Balboa in room 90, and has been teaching at Balboa for five years. Mrs. Zgliniec surely is developing the minds of her language arts students by helping them practice different writing styles such as grammar and reading. Her 8th grade classes are working on their monthly book presentations and quotation reflections that they will present in front of their classes.there will also be a special night held in May called Zeitgeist meaning spirit of the age where Mrs. Zgliniec and other 8th grade teachers want to showcase the talent of Balboa s 8th graders! By Asha Slyker Mrs.Garza s Class Hello new Balboa students! Mrs. Garza is a 6th grade teacher for science and language arts. In her class you will learn things like sentence types, persuasive essays, earth s layers, and tectonic plates. She wanted to teach because she loves kids, likes the idea of helping people, and just loves the fun of teaching. Language arts is her favorite because she loves reading and writing! If she had to pick one word for the other teachers here, she says, fabulous! By Gillian Garcia

4 Staff Highlights Ms. Edgar Meet Ms. Edgar! She teaches 6th and 7th grade language arts and reading. Her favorite hobby is to travel and her favorite animal is a kangaroo. Her first job was working at a bike rental shop in Ventura at 17 years old! Her favorite color is turquoise. When asked, If not teaching language arts and reading, what would you teach? her answer was science. Ms. Edgar is an all-around great teacher, so if you see her around campus give her a wave! By Ian McEwan Mrs. Lewis Mrs. Kennedy Mrs. Kennedy is a funny teacher here at Balboa. She teaches 7th grade science, and has been teaching the subject for over 19 years. If she could travel anywhere she wanted, she would travel to Wales, Italy, or Scotland. Her favorite project of the year is the DNA extraction lab where you get to extract DNA from a strawberry. Some of the other locations that Mrs. Kennedy has taught are New York, and Alaska. When asked what kind of animal she would want to be, she responded eagle. Clearly, Mrs. Kennedy is a very fun teacher to have, so if you see her around say hey! By Jerod Frederick Mrs. Lewis is one of the most awesome teachers at Balboa! She teaches language arts, reading, and science to 6th graders. Her favorite color is green, and her favorite sport is baseball, She has 3 pets, one dog, and two cats. In her free time(which she usually doesn t have because she s driving her kids to sports) she likes to read. She has taught at Balboa for 4 years. Before she taught at Balboa she taught in Santa Paula for 5 years. Mrs. Lewis is definitely one of the best teachers I ever had so, if you see her around give her a smile! By Michael Arcangelo

5 Student Highlights Shannon Kelley Shannon Kelley is a nice, fun, and outgoing 6th grader here at Balboa. Her favorite subject is math because she loves to solve problems. When Shannon is outside of school she loves to hang out with friends and go to the beach. Some of her favorite sports are softball and dance. Shannon s favorite thing about Balboa is she gets to have a locker and having four different teachers. When asked if Shannon could meet anybody in the world she said One Direction. Some of Shannon s favorite places to eat are, Panda Express and Olive Garden. Some of Shannon s best friends are Jolie, Jessica, and Shayna. Well, if you see Shannon around school, make sure to say hi! By Katelyn Kelley Noelle Batsa Noelle Basta is a fabulous 7th grader here at Balboa. Her favorite TV Show is Spongebob Squarepants and she loves sloths, tarsiers, and fat cats. She is a figure skater and takes dance classes at the Channel Islands Ice Center. In her free time, she likes to hang out with her friends. She is an ambitious, humble kid and she loves Mac and Cheese. This year, she does not have a favorite class or teacher. When asked if she would rather be a pirate princess or ninja mermaid, she replied ninja mermaid so she could have a mermaid tail and be a stealthy ninja. So if you see her around, say, Hey! 6 Student Life 6th Grade Life Hey 6th graders! Here at balboa you will have a great time in your classes, electives, and if you work hard enough and get a 3.5 GPA you go to Magic Mountian at the end of the year! In 7th grade you can take new electives like Yearbook, Home Arts, ASB and more! You can also look forward to the 6th Grade Extravaganza! So work hard and have great year! By Joanna Covarrubias 7th Grade Life Hi! Welcome back to Balboa! Ready for an exciting year? I mthere are great clubs to join, too! Enjoy making friends, take challenges, and share the laughter with your buds! You only go to seventh grade once, so make it special for you and others! Make sure to check out some of the interesting clubs like Battle of The Books,Followers 24/7, and many more. Also, make sure to show respect and stay out of trouble. Trust me, everyone wants to look forward to a great year! By Ashley Almanza 8th Grade Life Hey 8th graders! Welcome to your last year of middle school. As 8th graders, you have lots of different end of the year activities to look forward to. Some of these activities are the 8th grade dance, the Washington DC trip, and beach day. Just stay positive and keep your grades up and you will be able to participate in these activities. You are the oldest of the school, the 6th and 7th graders look up to you as role models. Enjoy being the oldest in the school because next year you will be the youngest again. There is a wide variety of lunch clubs, that are a great way to make some new friends and get involved in the school. 8th graders, make this year awesome! By Espie Barba

7 Sports Balboa Basketball Basketball has started up again! The head coach of the boys and girls team is Mr. Anter who also teaches computers and yearbook. The games will be played in the balboa school gym or in gyms nearby starting in December. The teams play on Tuesday and Thursday. It is free to watch the games, so if you enjoy an aggressive and competitive game of basketball I encourage you to come watch some games. Also, if you are a 6th or 7th grader that did not make the team this year, there are always tryouts next year! To get involved, Like the programs facebook page and be sure to sponser one of the players in the third annual free throw-athon! By Daniela Barbar Balboa Cross Country Balboa Girls Volleyball The volleyball team at balboa is one of the most popular sports at our school. The girls are very hard working and have a strong passion for the sport. Although there are plenty of girls now, soon the 8th graders will have to move on to Buena or Ventura high, leaving the seventh graders behind. That s where the sixth graders come in. The volleyball coach Mr. Hernstien strongly encourages sixth graders to try out for the team. So if you love playing volleyball or would just like to give it a shot, the Balboa girls volleyball team would love to have you! By Amaya Garcia Its that time of year again! Balboa Cross Country is in full swing. The top 6 runners for Balboa are Lauren Kearney, Kaiya Kelly, Keira Bergman, Sammie Henley, Brett Beattie, and Ryan Bova. 8 Clubs Math Counts Do you love math? Mr.Powers, an 8th grade math teacher, has a club you will love! Math Counts is a club that challenges students with their math skills. Math Counts meets at lunchtime in room 94 on Thursdays. During their meets, they have competitions, games and fun math problems to solve! So if you love math, make sure to stop by! New members are always welcome, and I m postive you ll have a blast! Also, if you are a student who struggles with math, this is a great opportunity to improve and test your math skills! By Shea Shannon Relay for Life Relay for life is a great club raising money for cancer. If you join the club your goal is to raise $100. The day of the event is May 31st It is at the beach and you can spend the night there! Mr. Roth is the team captain of Relay for life. The 8th grade representative is Oliva Velasquez, the 7th grade representative is Daniela Barbar, and the 6th grade representative is Olivia Roth. This is the first year of Relay for life at Balboa. The meetings are on every Monday, so join the club and have some fun! By Daniela Barbar Battle of the Books Are you interested in reading books and going to other schools, then join Battle of the Books. It is a cool club that is presented by Mrs. Deal and takes place in the library every Tuesday at lunch. Meetings start on September 27th so bring your lunch and a friend. After coming to the club throughout the whole year, kids from Ventura county compete in teams in an all day battle of the books! There are many students that participate and they say it is great fun, so let s get reading! By Cole Alcasas

9 Dear Suzy Advice Dear Suzy, I m a new 6th grader here and I don t know anyone or have any friends. What should I do to make some new friends? - Alone Abby DearAlone Abby, There are lots of other 6th graders in your situation! Find someone new and introduce yourself, I m sure you ll make tons of new friends! -Suzy Dear Suzy, I got into a huge fight with my best friend and we both said some really bad things. She said she hates me and doesn t want to talk to me, but I still want to be friends! How should I approach the situation? Unhappy Ursula Dear Unhappy Ursula, There are always different options that could help the situation, but my advice to you would be to apologize or try to work things out! If you both apologize, and talk out your differences, I m sure you guys will be fine. Suzy Dear Suzy, I have a hard time remembering my locker combo and my passwords for Q and login! I can barely remember them and I m always forgetting! What should I do? Forgetful Frank Dear Forgetful Frank, Just write them down! Either write them down on the inside of your binder, or just tape them on the inside of you locker. That way all you need to do is remember one combination instead of four! Suzy Dear Suzy, I can never get to my classes on time! My locker is on the other side of the school and I don t have time to get my books! If I get another tardy, I ll have detention! What are some tips? Late Larry Dear Late Larry, At breaks, make sure to get your books for the next two classes and try to hangout somewhere near your next class, that way you ll be able to take your time! Suzy

10 From the Yearbook Get Inspired! Get inspired is a program run by the yearbook staff to raise money for people in need. The way we raise money is holding fundraisers; such as a jog-a-thon for the victims of the Boston bombing, and raising money for St. Judes hospital. If you want to contribute listen to the newscast and bulletin, and look around campus for posters and flyers. It includes pictures of clubs, sports, events, dances, school photos, and much more. You can turn in your life outside of school pictures to room 50 or on From 9/07-10/18 the price for the yearbook is $29, but after 10/19, it becomes $34 until 3/28 which then it goes up again to the final price of $39! The photos that you submit will be in the yearbook Life outside of School page if spots are still available (they fill up fast!) In order to upload photos, you have to set up an account on the website. The process of creating an account is pretty self-explanatory, but if you need help, there are tutorial videos on our Instagram page (@balboayearbook). You can also ask someone from the yearbook staff to help you. This is a great way to share what you like to do for fun with the school. Again, spots fill up fast, so hurry before spots are gone!
