1 Jump Rope/Hoops For Heart Event at Bellport Middle School February is Heart Health Month!! Bellport Middle School is thrilled to be supporting the American Heart Association to help teach our students and families how to take care of their hearts through the Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops for Heart Program. In their Physical Education Class, students learned how exercise affects their hearts, how to stay fit for life and how exercise benefits their hearts. In addition, we raise funds to support the American Heart Association s research and education initiatives that save lives in our community. We far exceeded our original goal of $1, BMS Students raised over $3, and shot baskets-or-jumped rope for over 44,592 times to battle heart disease. Thank you to all of our Students and Faculty for making this year s Jump Rope/Hoops For Heart Event a HUGE SUCCESS!! 2 Story Faces returns to BMS On December 18, 2015, the 8th grade students, of Bellport Middle School were treated to an Assembly Program of Story Faces presentation by artist, author & Storyteller Christopher Agostino. Artist, author & Storyteller Christopher Agostino, is both a visual and performing artist, combining these arts in his signature Story Faces performances, in which he brings stories to life through painted faces. The students learned how story telling using symbolism and imagery can transform a face and make it more expressive. The children were very excited to learn and hear Christopher Agostino story s and to incorporate it into their own mask assignment. It was also a wonderful way to end the mask assignment for some of the students. The Students works will be on exhibit at the annual Art Show held in the Bellport Middle School during May. This educational experience provided valuable enrichment for all its participants. I am grateful to the Students 4 Art Committee and the South Country Education Foundation board for sponsoring this event.

3 Welcome to the magical world of Willy Wonka Jr! A place where your Pure Imagination can come alive and your sweet tooth can crave chocolate and candy without remorse! As we try to resist the temptation of giving in to that sweet tooth we are reminded in the story that we all have the ability to show good character and be the best person we can be. It is easy to eat too much, be spoiled, have bad manners, and be on an electronic device every day, but it is truly amazing to be conscious of your food intake, be kind and sweet, and communicate face to face with the people you love! Willy Wonka helps to teach all of his golden ticket winners the meaning of being caring, respectful, responsible, fair, and trustworthy, all the traits of good character! Enjoy the show, and always remember stay magical!!!

5 BELLPORT MIDDLE SCHOOL RAISES OVER $3,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH The Bellport Middle School has concluded their Season of Charity with a fundraiser for cancer research. The school engaged in a month long competition known as the Penny Wars. For the entire month of January the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students battled it out to see which grade would come out on top. The goal was to beat last year s record of $2,192 and the students set out to do exactly that. The success of this fundraiser was supported by many of the staff members helping to cheerlead and coordinate the student s enthusiasm. In the end, Bellport Middle School collected $3,010, which will go directly to John Hopkins University for Cancer Research. Bellport Middle School Student Council advisor, Mr. Di Puma, was grateful for the collective efforts of the Bellport faculty, staff and students. He stated that he is continually inspired by the charitable nature of the middle school and the amazing feats that the faculty, students and staff accomplish working in unity.

6 New Reading Mentors Recently an informal Reading Mentor Program was started with Responder Ervin and Joe Scioli. This is just one picture of Adrian Scott reading his favorite book with Ervin. Both staff members and students are reading the same books and discussing as they read. So far it has been a success.
