President s Gavel As the Marching Band season is ending, we can now look forward to more great performances at the Evans City Halloween Parade, the Zelienople Holiday Parade along with our upcoming Winter Instrumental Concerts. I would like to thank our Directors for designing a great show and to the students for a season of wonderful performances. A Very Special Thank You goes out to our senior parents Kevin & Bettie Sager for all of their hard work in managing our Concessions Stands over the past years and for additionally coordinating the Homecoming Booth the past few years. I additionally want to thank Joni Parise for her efforts in organizing our chaperones, Jamie Smith for her Nurses and their expert first aid care, Linda O'Conner and Cheryl Ferraro for ensuring the great care of the uniforms, our apple mom Diane Campbell for providing the half-time treats, during the football games, and to Neal Jackson our Voice of the Band. We have seen some new faces in the concession stands and chaperoning the games and I wish to encourage everyone to get involved. It s always exciting to listen to the students performances at Pasta Dinner, they all did such an awesome job. I d like to thank Roberta Love and her team for their hard work in organizing another successful fundraiser. This month we have a couple exciting opportunities within our Band Organization; On Saturday, November 15, from 10:00am 4:30pm at Rowan Elementary; a Mattress Sale, inform all your family, friends and neighbors to come out and support your Band Student(s), and our Booster organization. Additionally, many volunteers are needed to assist, more information in this newsletter. On Tuesday, November 18, starting at 4:00pm District V Honors Band auditions will be held at Will W. Orr Auditorium and Dept. of Music, on the grounds of Westminster College. Please don t forget the Band Trip halfway payment which is due by December 1, 2014 (individual trip accounts must have a total of $ on this date). We are always hoping to see at least one member of each family at our Booster meetings, last meeting for 2014 will be on Monday, November 10 th at 7:00 P.M. in the Senior High Band Room. Support to our Booster Organization is always needed and greatly appreciated. John Campbell, President
Page 2 A Note From the Directors BAND CALENDAR Please check the band website calendar to stay informed! Click the Calendar link on the left-hand side menu. Every part of the school year has its own set of challenges. Now that the football season is winding down, many students turn their attention to the upcoming Honors Band auditions. Finding practice time each day is a must! Daily practice should include important items such as the working out of technical passages, solidifying phrases, and cleaning up articulation. However, a necessary part of that preparation must also include listening to great recordings of the solo. Even though most students that audition receive weekly lessons, it is important to have consistent reinforcement of good tone quality and musicianship. Most young musicians understand this aspect is crucial but do not always know where to go and seek out quality recordings. Listed below are some ideas on how to search for great instrumentalists. 1. Ask your private teacher/band directors for their suggestions. Often times, they have a great working knowledge of some of the best recordings that exist. 2. Seek out reputable music periodicals. Many articles in the world of music include reviews on recordings as well as information on some of the newest artists in instrumental music. 3. Research the principal players of major symphony orchestras. There are many high-quality, live and studio recordings that have been created over the last eighty years that are worth checking out. Although, the focus of this article addresses the need for recordings when preparing for Honors Band, listening should be part of individual preparation at all times. Young and developing musicians require constant reinforcement of great tone quality, articulation, intonation, and musicianship. Students must take initiative and begin an exploration of professional musicians to learn from and mirror while honing their own skills. Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Babick, Mr. Eisenreich, and Mrs. Snyder
Page 3 Mattress Fundraiser Saturday, November 15th Rowan Elementary School Cafeteria 10 am 4:30 pm November am-4:30 pm Rowan Elementary Please consider helping for the mattress fundraiser. See the Help Needed to the right. Please help support the band by asking your friends, neighbors, co-workers and family to come to our Rowan Cafeteria showroom to try out new mattress sets. Band students who refer buyers will receive money toward the upcoming band trip!! Plus, the Band Booster s general account receives money for every mattress sold!! See the flyer in this newsletter and give it to everyone you know. Make sure your band student s name is written at the bottom so that they get credit toward their trip account if a mattress set is purchased! One in 10 people are looking for new mattresses so help spread the word. All mattress sets are brand new, made in the company factory after you order them, and sent directly to the distribution center in your area. They can be delivered or you can pick them up at the distribution center located in the Mars area. If every band family were to refer at least one person who purchases a set, we would make OVER $20,000!! Please do your part to support this fundraiser!! Help Needed: **Student and adult volunteers are needed the day of the sale. If you are able to be a part of the fun for a 1 or 2 hour block of time on November 15th, please contact Karen Johanknecht, karens@johanknecht.com Poinsettia Sale Winter is almost here, and that means it is Poinsettia Time! 4 Page 4 Pasta Dinner & Basket Raffle As I write this we are just days away from our Pasta Dinner. I can say with confidence that this year s event will be a big success for our organization. Proceeds from the dinner go to the SV Band Booster s General Fund which supports ALL of the bands and auxiliary groups. It has been a great pleasure working with the many parents, students, school staff and volunteer performers who have given their time to make a special evening. Although this is a fundraiser, it is also an opportunity to come together as a band community and celebrate the great band program we have here at Seneca Valley. This year we have sold nearly 400 tickets and have over 50 volunteers contributing to the dinner. THANK YOU to everyone who has helped with this event. Final numbers on the dinner will be in the next newsletter. Roberta Love Pasta Dinner Chair Special Thanks to: Special Thanks go to: Armstrong Cable In the Loop for promotional video. HIP Printing and Copies 115 W New Castle Street in Zelienople for donating pasta dinner tickets. Lazier s Harmony Music Studio 250 Mercer Street in Harmony for the entertainment at the dinner. Seneca Valley Senior High School Cafeteria and Custodial Staff for providing facilities and food for the dinner. Seneca Valley School District Administration and Athletic Department for their support of the Band Program. Zelienople Rotary Club for the use of their sign in Zelienople.
Pastries by Andrea Ways and Means Our fundraising efforts and initiatives continue to be strong and consistent with previous years. We had a successful Dining For Dollars event October 6 th at Chic Fil A. At the time of this writing, we are poised to have one of our most successful Band Boosters Pasta Dinners on Saturday October 24 th. We recently closed out another successful Enjoy coupon books sale and our first Hoagie sale in a number of years is currently underway. Additionally, 50/50 ticket sales at homes games have been consistent, with only one home game left. Our 3 rd annual Mattress sale is scheduled for November 15 th and the Pastries by Andrea fundraiser is also coming up in November. So it has been a busy time of fundraising for all and will continue Page 5 to be so over the coming weeks. A huge THANK YOU to all those who have volunteered to coordinate and work on our fundraising activities and of course to everyone who has supported our fundraising initiatives through buying, selling, dining or whatever! We re already working on some exciting things for next year but more on that later! If you have any questions or require more information about any of our fundraising activities or have ideas for future fundraising programs, please contact Peter Grewar pgrewar@agoc.com /
Kolachi Baklava Apricot Cookies Ladylocks Pastries by Andrea Online orders to go toward individual trip accounts due Nov 28. Pickup at Winter Concert on Thurs, December 4 Pastries by Andrea It s time once again for the PASTRIES by ANDREA fundraiser. If you ve done this before you already know how happy you are going to make peoples taste buds! YUMMY doesn t begin to describe the Baklava (sweet, flaky, Greek/Syrian pastry), Kolachi (large nut or apricot roll), and Ladylocks (traditional puff pasty with sweet cream filling) that Andrea personally creates by hand for us. PASTRIES by ANDREA is helping us in two ways. First, she will be at our SV Christmas Concert on December 4, 2014, selling her wonderful pastries and donating 30% to our general fund. This helps everyone with the band trip and expenses for the band. Second, if you are interested in raising money for your individual band trip account, you can take orders in advance. You ll receive a flyer with instructions, and ordering is done online Page 6 now. Individual orders must be submitted online by November 28, and will be picked up at the Concert. There are options to prepay or to pay the night of pickup. The profit for the individual sale is between $4 and $6 per item, which goes into your individual trip account. This is a great way to pay for a nice chunk of your band trip! This fundraiser takes place over the Thanksgiving Holiday, so you should have ample time to sell to friends, neighbors and families. All items freeze well, and the ladylocks are especially tasty right out of the freezer!! (Thanks to Mr. Chickness for that great tip!!) If you have questions, please call Mrs. Erin Scott at or je3bandb@zoominternet.net. Thanks, and GOOD LUCK SELLING!!
