Girls basketball game away at Derby Middle School beginning at 4:30 p.m. 10/09 Today is a B day Cross Country meet away at Power Middle Schoolz beginning at 4:30 p.m. Girls basketball game away at Farmington Middle School starting at 4:30 p.m. 10/10 Today is an A day ½ day dismissal at 11:55 a.m. Patriot Trading Post is open 7:30 a.m.-7:45 a.m. and 3:00-3:15 p.m. Look for the Patriot banner located next to the vending machine. Bring your tickets with your first and last name written clearly on the ticket, your grade circled and/or money to purchase many special items! Cement work in drop off zone. Parents must enter from Highland Avenue. The drop off and pick will be one way only through the end of the week. 7th and 8th grade football game away at East Hills Middle School beginning at 4:30 p.m. 10/11 Today is a B day Girls basketball game home against Clarencevilll starting at 4:30 p.m. Students must have $1 AND student ID to attend. 10/12 Today is an A day Bagels $1.00 each sold during 2nd hour PBIS weekly drawings at lunch

3 3 A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Until it suddenly stopped making any progress and looked like it was stuck. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, although it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man didn t think anything of it and sat there waiting for the wings to enlarge to support the butterfly. But that didn t happen. The butterfly spent the rest of its life unable to fly, crawling around with tiny wings and a swollen body. Despite the kind heart of the man, he didn t understand that the restricting cocoon and the struggle needed by the butterfly to get itself through the small opening; it s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings which was to prepare itself for flying once it was out of the cocoon. Moral of the story: Our struggles in life develop our strengths. Without struggles, we never grow and never get stronger, so it s important for us to tackle challenges on our own, and not be relying on help from others. What s coming up: 10/15 Picture Retakes for students that purchased a package on Sept. 10th and return it and for all students new to the junior high after Sept. 10th. It s not too late to order pictures and/or a yearbook, even if you already had your photo taken on Sept. 10th You can payonline at using the code HPJR2018. Many picture packets include a yearbook, but not all. Yearkbooks must be pre-ordered by February. The cost is $18. You do not have to purchase school pictures to purchase a yearbook. 10/15-10/19 Spirit Week. Further information will come soon from the student council. For now we know that Thursday, Oct. 18th will be U of M vs MSU day (Green vs Blue) and Friday, Oct. 19th will be costume day. 10/19 Fall PTSA Dance. Students can wear costumes. The cost is $5. Tickets will go on sale 10/18 and 10/19 at lunch only. Students must have ID to purchase a ticket and can have no out of school suspensions since school started. Students will be allowed to wear costumes to school, however the costume must meet the following criteria: the costume must adhere to the HP dress code. Absolutely NO costumes depicting gangs, NO costumes depicting scary clowns, NO costumes depicting violence, NO costumes which are sexually explicit or revealing, NO costumes which show illegal substances illustrated or in print, NO fake blood, NO weapons, NO fake

4 4 contacts, NO masks and NO spraying or coloring hair while at school. Students may come to school with hair colored or sprayed but may not do it while at school. Hats are allowed! This was all discussed in detail at our grade level meeting on October 3rd. 10/30 Dentists R Us are coming to our school. See flyer below. 10/31 ½ day dismissal at 11:55 a.m. Pep assembly 11:00-11:45 a.m. Fall athletes will be introduced, the dance team will perform and the band will play. Parent Updates: 6th graders : Mathew, Makiya, Andre, Dashanae and Riley PBIS Weekly Raffle Winners 7th graders: Haven, Joshua, Isabel, Xavier and Naomi 8th graders: Alexis, Genesis, Summer (won twice) and Sarah

5 5 We held our October Grade Level Assemblies during Success B classes. A slideshow was presented and shared with all students and staff. The agenda included sharing data about PBIS ticket collection, behavior data/ office referrals for the month of September and the concern regarding being tardy to class. The 8th graders were happy to find out that they were the only grade level that met their reduction in office referral goal which will result in a celebration for the 8th grade only. The students can submit ideas for this celebration using a Google form. The celebration will take place next week. We celebrated our Postive Patriots at the grade level assemblies this week. Each teacher picked one student who exemplifies positivity. These students were introduced at the assembly and have their photo hanging outside the teacher s classroom for the entire month. We held hourly raffles on Count Day (Wednesday). Students who arrived on time to each class period received a ticket. We pulled 2 winners from each grade level each period for prizes. At the end of the day we put all the tickets together in a bucket and chose 10 students to receive larger prizes which included a signed Al Kaline Tiger Baseball, a Jackson Piston s jersy, Iglesias Tiger jersey, $10 gift cards to Papa Johns and Taco Bell, a MLB wooden baseball bat, Lions hats and bags and a backpack filled with surprises! Unfortunately Ms. Scholz s phone crashed and some of the photos were lost. :(

6 6 During lunch on Thursday, I visited with the students that won the monthly PBIS pizza party. The winning ticket holder from each grade chose two friends to share a large pizza donated by Hungry Howies. 6th grade Project Lead The Way worked on Isometric Sketches this week in class.

7 7 Our 8th grade science classes worked on Investigating designs of parachutes to explore air resistance.

10 10 NO CELL PHONE USAGE ANYWHERE IN HPJH! A letter was sent home on the first day of school which outlines the Hazel Park Board Policies. Students may NOT have cell phones in classrooms, hallways, locker rooms, cafeteria, restrooms or any place other than the main office with permission or outside. If a staff member SEES or HEARS the phone (even if it is not being used) the student will be required to turn over the phone and a parent/guardian must come to school with ID to get the phone. NO EXCEPTIONS! When studemts are signing in to their Hazel Park Gmail account, please remember that it is FOR SCHOOL WORK ONLY! If you want to download videos, games, etc, you must create your own personal Gmail account with the permission of your parents. We have experienced devices freezing up at school due to the excessive amount of downloads some students are doing at home that are not school related. ***Please send in your BOX TOPS that you saved over the summer. They help us earn money for our school. ***

11 11 Breakfast and Lunch Menus A full student lunch includes the following items: Choice of entree, TWO vegetable/fruit side dishes (1 of each) and milk. All students must take all the items when going through the line. If you have any questions or comments about the menu, please contact Samantha Mozdzierz at or Please note that If a student brings a lunch from home and would like to purchase milk or a side of fruits/vegetables from the bar, it will be a $.50 charge for each. When making that purchase, the student should give the money to the checker at the end of the serving line. Remember, a full reimbursable meal is always available to the students at NO Charge. To be a full reimbursable meal, the student would have to take 3 out of the 5 lunch components, which would include the milk as an option. Menus are posted in the cafeteria and attached to an sent on 9/15/18 Some classrooms are warm and others can get rather chilly. Dressing in appropriate layers in highly recommended! Keeping a sweatshirt in your locker in a good idea! Remember to adhere to the school dress code! Dropping off and Picking up Students: Parents please do NOT drop students off or pick up students in the parking lot where the cars are parked in the front of the school or on any of the side streets. Please use the drop off lane in the front of the school. This allows students to be dropped off on the sidewalk and reduces the chances of students getting hit by walking through the lot or by passing cars. The Hazel Park Police Department have been issuing tickets to any drivers that stop, stand or park along the side streets and to people that stand or park in the drop off lane in front of the school. ON OCTOBER 10TH-12TH WE WILL BE HAVING A REPAIR TO OUR WALKWAY IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL WHICH MAY MAKE DROP OFF A LITTLE LONGER DUE TO LIMITED ACCESS IN THE DRIVEWAY.

FYI: Safety is a priority at HPJH so we do not call a student out of class and will not release a student to anyone during the school day without proper identification even if the staff is familiar with the parent or guardian that is checking a student out. There is a clipboard on the front counter of the office for signing out students. Please note that students will only be released to people listed on the MiStar emergency contacts. We want to make sure ALL of our students are safe!
