1 Trojan Tribune 4/4/2018 Issue 7 by Paige Semmler The Madness of March has come and gone and the best time of the year has graced us once again. People have said that this was the most unpredictable field of teams in years. Everyone rushed to get The Perfect Bracket filled out in time for the tournament start. In reality, 99% of all brackets are busted after the first round and with all the upsets that have happened in the tournament this year, it d be a miracle if your bracket didn t end up busted. With Kansas and Villanova being the only No. 1 seeds left (Virginia lost to No. 16 UMBC and Xavier lost to No. 9 Florida State) after the Round of 32, it made room for lower-seeded teams like No.11 Loyola-Chicago and No. 9 Kansas State to try and make it to the Final Four, as they had already won out and made it into the Elite 8. This year s Final Four was held in San Antonio, Texas with the semifinal games being on Saturday, March 31 and the championship game on Monday, April 2. Loyola (No. 11) prevailed and punched their ticket to the Alamo Dome, along with Kansas (No. 1), Villanova (No. 1), and Michigan (No. 3). On Saturday, Michigan squared off with Loyola Chicago and ultimately ended their Cinderella Story of a season, winning Next up was the battle of the one-seeds, with the Jayhawks taking on the Wildcats. Kansas couldn t handle the quick shooters of Nova Nation and lost 95-79, with Villanova converting on 45% of 3-point attempts and going 55% on field goals for the night. Cheerleaders selected by Clara Plooster One of the sure signs of spring is the annual cheerleading selection process. Cheer tryouts were held recently and the results announced: The cheerleading squads are as follows: For Competitive Cheer, Hanna Jackson, Kennedy Heidinger, Maci DeGeest, Kenzie Prunty, Kayla Neugebauer, Rachel Mahoney, Jordyn Lippert, Madison Zwinger, Keelie Konfrst, Kenna Konfrst, London Sudbeck, Bennett McIntosh, Sadie Lindeman and Reese Reichert-Alternates; The Football Cheer Squad includes Hanna, Kenzie, Rachel, Madison, Sadie, and Bennett; Boys Basketball Cheer is Hanna, Maci, Jordyn, Jackie, Reese, and Zoey Harrison; Girls basketball Cheer includes Kennedy, Kayla, Summer Sloan, Rachel, Madison, and Lizzy Kinneberg. Congratulations to all the girls! Parkston High School Parkston, SD parkston.k12.sd.us March Madness touches SD teams With Loyola and Kansas being eliminated, the stage was set for Villanova to take on Michigan in the Ship. Nova went into the half with a pretty comfortable lead with the score being They only went up from there, outscoring the Wolverines in the second half and capturing their second title in 3 years with a convincing win (79-62). Villanova s Donte DiVincenzo was named MVP by his impressive effort off the bench. DiVincenzo had 31 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. This year we had some South Dakota representation in the tourney with SDSU making it to the Big Dance. The Jackrabbits beat the USD Coyotes in the Summit League Championship game to earn an NCAA Tournament berth. The Jacks ended up as a 12-seed and faced No. 5 Ohio State in the Round of 64. They lost and were eliminated due to the singleelimination nature of this tournament. The playing field was blown wide open this year. But, would it really be March if there weren t any upsets? One thing is for sure, this year s Final Four teams were definitely an eclectic mix of teams that we haven t seen make it that far in awhile. Although the tournament may be over, talk about the games will continue for time to come. Until next year! Track renovations make the season a challenge by Jenna Bialas This season the track team is taking some new routes. The track and football stadium will be getting renovated because the track is out of date. This means that the team won t be able to practice on the track or on the equipment needed for field events. They also won t be able to hold any home meets, like the Ethan-Parkston Early Bird or the end of the year home meet. All of the home meets will be held in Mount Vernon. The first track meet this season was the Early Bird Meet, April 3. Unfortunately, due to the weather, the meet had to be cancelled. The team has had to be creative for practices. They will have to find places and ways to practice that don t involve the school track or field equipment. This year is kind of sad for the seniors who won t get a home meet their last year, but they know the track will be better for the future of the school and community.

6 The End is Near! Of the school year, that is... This year has gone faster than many of us realized. Now, we are getting down to crunch time and the days we have left in class are fewer than you think, what with State meetings for HOSA, FCCLA, FFA, and FBLA. Add to that, the time we lose in class for Girls Golf, Track and Music competitions. In the interest of give everyone a Head s up, we have put together a calendar of the events scheduled in the last seven weeks of the school year. Take some time to look at it, as it is still your responsibility to make sure your work gets done. Your teachers will appreciate it, if you are on top of your class work, as well. Good luck, enjoy the end of the year and take a breath, once in a while! 2-Apr No School 3-Apr FFA Agriscience 4-Apr 5-Apr Testing: 7th 6-Apr 5-8 Vocal Armour Mitchell Rescheduled to AM, 8th PM Easter Monday April 20 Large Group JH Scotland FFA Lennox Early Bird Track Meet photos Cancelled HOSA State Convention, April Apr Testing: 11th AM, 10-Apr Testing: 11th AM, 11-Apr Testing: Our 12-Apr Testing: Our 13-Apr Testing: 8th Our Home PM Our Home PM Home AM, 11 PM Home AM, 11 PM aam, 7th PM Wagner Relays Elementary Music Corn Palace Relays; FCCLA State Conv.
