Photos by Tiah Holzbauer By CC Neugebauer Friday, November 10, Parkston High School celebrated Veteran s Day. It began with the master of ceremony, then the posting of colors. The band played The National Anthem, America, the Beautiful, and Armed Forces on Parade. The choir sang We Honor You. They both performed exceptionally well. Dr. Carole South-Winter was the guest speaker. Pastor Michael Boyle did the Invocation and the Benediction. The program ended with the retirement of the colors. Wes Baumiller, James Byykkonen, Elly Hohn, and Madison Faas dispense coffee and goodies during the last SRB of each week with Mrs. Oberembt looking on. Lava Java Cart gives students a chance to build new skills Several students, with the help of the Resource room staff, are busy learning about moneyhandling and customer skills in a new enterprise at PHS. School staff members place orders with the Lava Java Cart earlier in the week, and deliveries are made each end-of-the-week SRB. Staff can order coffee, tea, or hot chocolate as well as an assortment of snacks. A cool fall greets Thanksgiving week By Maysa Davidson The fall weather has taken a chilly turn in the past couple weeks. Parkston has received their first snowfall, but not enough to stick around more than a couple days. Recent temperatures have been in the mid to low teens, with highs only in the twenties or thirties. It looks like it s going to be a chilly fall going into winter.
2 Students attend work skills conference By Scott Voje Tuesday, November 7, Scott Voje, Matt Bowar, Tate Weber, and Wes Baumiller went to Sioux Falls for a conference called Let s Talk About Work. They had to get up early and be at the school at 6:50 am so they could leave at 7:00 am. They had the conference at the Ramada. The boys had two meetings in the morning. The first meeting was about job applications and how they are supposed to look. After that, they went around to talk to different agencies about services and picked up goodies like pencils, candy, and flashlights. They sat back down and listened to a boss from Subway, and a boss from HyVee talk about hiring people who want to work. Students with disabilities talked about their jobs at Subway and HyVee. At 11:30a.m., they got lunch. The hotel fed them salad, pizza, and bread sticks, and a pop. After lunch, they had another meeting about having good attendance, not being late for work, and how to be a good employee. The last meeting talked about how important it is to have a good attitude at work. The conference was done at 2:00p.m. and then they came home. All-State Music participants include Jacob Dundas and TJ Bigge (standing), and Kim Weber, Madison Zwinger, Hannah Braley, and Chloe Wegehaupt. PHS Students participate in All-State Music By Mica Johnson The All-State Choir and Orchestra students this year went to the Denny Sanford Premier center on Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28. Friday, they practiced all day to get their songs to sound beautiful, and on Saturday they performed. The students that went to participate in the All-State Choir were Jacob Dundas, Hannah Braley, Madison Zwinger, and Kim Weber. The students that went to participate in the All-State orchestra were TJ Bigge and Chloe Wegehaupt. They each received certificates recognizing four years of participation. Upper photo: Scott Voje, Matt Bowar, Wes Baumiller, Tate Weber, and Ms. Wegehaupt take a moment at the Let s Talk About Work conference in Sioux Falls. 3 FFA members compete in LDE events By Jonah Zwinger Every November, the FFA chapter competes in a Leadership Development Event (LDE). These events are designed to create leadership skills to help members in the future. There are many events for FFA members to compete in, such as Public Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Creed Speaking, Employment Skills, Ag. Broadcasting, Ag. Issues, Ag. Communications, Ag. Sales, Marketing Plan, Parliamentary Procedure, Jr. Parlia- Athletes ready for next Gymnastic season soon By Lizzy Kinneberg As gymnastics kicks off, the team is looking forward to a great year. The team consists of five Parkston athletes, three Ethan athletes, and one Hanson athlete. They practice four times a week and put in hard work at each practice. The team has grown by five since last year. They have seven meets this season. The first Call of Duty keeps students up at night... By Brayden Leischner Every year on the first week of November, a new Call of Duty video game comes out to the world. This year the new Call of Duty game is titled, Call of Duty: World War II. A majority of the students at PHS who play video games look forward to the new game to come out and being played. When this year s game came out November 3, at midnight, many students at PHS stayed up for the most of the night and also woke up very early in the morning to play the game. If you saw the students who played the video game for most of the night you might have called them zombies for how tired they look, but when they came home from school they still played until it was dark. You could say this has been a tradition in Parkston High School for many years and it won t stop in the future. mentary Procedure, and Interview for District Officer. Some of the results were: TJ Bigge placed first in Prepared Public Speaking, the Jr. Parliamentary Procedure team also placed first, and the Ag. Communications team was awarded second. The members also have community service projects such as packing meals for the hungry. The members packed a total of 46,000 meals. meet is November 27, in Yankton. The team puts in a lot of hours and hard work to better themselves. Their goal is to make it to state, which is held in Watertown this year. There are four events that each person can compete in. These events include: beam, bars, vault, and floor. The team is excited for the meets to start so they can show off what they can do. HOSA Happenings By Jenna Bialas Friday, November 10, HOSA held a blood drive at the high school. Twenty-seven people donated blood. The blood drive was a success with 75 lives being saved through blood donation. The HOSA chapter would like to thank everyone that donated to save a life. Monday, November 13, a few juniors and seniors from the HOSA chapter travelled to SDSU to see their cadaver lab. The students learned lots about the human body while seeing and touching the cadavers. They also learned how some of the health programs work at SDSU. The students ended their trip at Buffalo Wild Wings before they headed home. Tylee Neugebauer and Madison Zwinger donate blood (upper left photo) during the Blood Drive sponsored by the local HOSA chapter.
4 Jr. High members of FCCLA attend national training in Washington, D.C. Parkston FCCLA Jr. High students Abby Hohn, Jackie Braley, Spencer Albrecht and Ragen Weber, recently had an extraordinary adventure. In response to a national program supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the National FCCLA organization, the students applied and were chosen to participate in a program targeting low seat-belt use among teens. The students spent three days in Washington D.C. learning to address the issue. As a result of what they learned, expect to see them outside watching for seatbelt use, and presenting awareness events. Spencer Albrecht, Abby Hohn, Jackie Braley, and Ragen Weber visit the Lincoln Memorial in DC.

6 Homemade Pumpkin Pie By Maggie Baumgart Thanksgiving is not just about the turkey and cranberry sauce. Thanksgiving is about family and traditions. One of many traditions that American families have is the annual pumpkin pie. I know at my family s Thanksgiving we always have Grandma s Homemade Pumpkin Pie. Grandma s Homemade Pumpkin Pie Ingredients: ¾ c. sugar ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 2 large eggs 1 15oz. can, 100% Pumpkin 1 c. heavy cream 1 9-inch pie crust Directions: First you need to start by mixing the sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Then, beat eggs in a large bowl. Next, stir in pumpkin and sugar-spice mix with the eggs. Then you gradually stir in the heavy cream. Last, pour the mixture into the pie crust. Bake Time: Preheat your oven to 425 F for minutes. Then turn the oven down to 350 F. Put the pie into the oven and bake for minutes. To check use a knife and insert it into the middle. If the knife is clean it is done. Cool the pie on a wire rack for 2 hours. You can either serve it right away or refrigerate it.
