1 Trojan Tribune 10/31/2016 Issue 2 Parkston High School Parkston, SD Missoula Children s Theatre brings drama to Parkston by Arabela Brissette This year the Missoula Children s Theater produced the play The Snow Queen. There were a lot of kids that went out for it. Like in the past they have done interpretations of princess movies, old children s movies, and fairy tales. This year s effort was a good play and the student actors put a lot of time and effort into it. The Missoula directors only have one week to put on a performance working with children of all ages. It was amazing. The kids worked hard and put a lot of effort in it the snow queen was by far one of the most enjoyable recent plays. Parkston Elementary and Jr. High students listen to the director during practice. 2 Best Scary Movies for Halloween By Brandon and Alex Manley Halloween (1978) If you like slasher movies, you must see the original Halloween made in 1978, and directed by John Carpenter. This movie s plot is pretty simple: Michael Myers murders his sister when he is six years old and is sent to a mental hospital. Fifteen years later, he escapes to go on another killing spree in his hometown. IT (2017) If you like blood and gore and physiological horror then you should see the IT remake made in 2017 directed by Andres Muschietti and based off the book by Stephen King. IT is about a monster who has been around for centuries that looks like a deranged clown who eats kids in the sewers and persuades people to do bad things to each other. The Conjuring (2013) If you like supernatural horror then this movie, directed by James Wan, is for you. This movie is based on purportedly true events of paranormal investigators Lauren and Ed Warren. The film is ripe with supernatural threats including mysterious sounds and a possession by a menacing spirit. Friday the 13 th Part 2 (1981) If you like blood and gore and Jason Voorhees as the killer, then you should watch Friday the 13th, Part 2, released on April 30, 1981, and directed by Steve Miner. This movie picks up five years after the original movie with a new killer, new setting, and new victims. Halloween brings chilling activities to the area Halloween has roots in Celtic culture by Marshal Seppala and Richie Espinoza Halloween originated in the Celtic lands and was called Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts believed that it was a time when the boundary between the land of the living and the land of the dead was blurred. They celebrated their New Years on the first of November, because it showed the end of summer and beginning of harvest. They had things called sacred bonfires to keep them warm throughout the long, dark winter. After the Romans conquered their lands they renamed it to Pomona, to honor the goddess of fruits and trees. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, anything superstitious or religious was taken out of Halloween along with all the frightening and grotesque things about it. by Victoria Hopper, Morgan Faas, & McKenzie Faas For Halloween fans, there are still several opportunities to enjoy the season. Many of the attractions have been running for much of October, but some still are open to fear-seekers. DWU in Mitchell is hosting a haunted house open October 26, 27, 31, and November 2 & 3. It s from 7:30 pm-9:30 pm (October dates) and 2-4 pm (November dates). Admission-$12. The Fear Asylum located at 216 W. 6 th Street in Brookings, SD, has great reviews. This event started in early October and runs October 31, November 2, & 3, when it will be open from 7pm to 12am, and October 25, and 31, when it will be open from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets start at $24.

Members earn FFA jackets By Zoey Harrison Congratulations to Isaac Bialas, Landon Sudbeck, and Zoey Harrison. These three FFA members entered in the annual FFA contest to win a free FFA jacket. Every year FFA members have a chance to win a free FFA jacket which are usually $75. This contest is for anyone, no matter what your financial status is whether you can buy one or not. All you have to do to enter is write why or what this FFA jacket would mean to you. It s so easy to do and well worth the effort. So next year, if the opportunity comes, don t pass it up take advantage of it--and if you don t get it, try again. Zoey, Isaac, and Landon model their new FFA jackets.

4 Sports Volleyball Wraps up tough season with R1 Regions By Angelic Shaw The Trojan Volleyball team started off 0-3 to Platte-Geddes at the beginning of the month. October has been a rough month for the Trojan Volleyball team, but the Trojans are still looking up. The team is looking at the positive in the negative and is finding strength in one another. The head coach Leslie Rylance, said We ve had tough competition, but we continue to get better! The Trojans wrapped up their season at the first round of Pre-regions when they fell to Parker in the first round of Regions. October /2- Plate-Geddes /4- KWL /9- Wagner /11- Parker /16- Bon Homme /20- Platte-Geddes /22- Madison /30- Parker 0-3 Competitive Cheer team places at State By Bennett McIntosh As the Competitive Cheer teams season came to a close, they ended with placing in many competitions. The Cheerleaders had a few competitions that came with unexpected obstacles. They were down a cheerleader but that didn t stop the girls from trying their best. They worked hard at in and out of practice to prepare for the State Tournament in Brandon. The Cheer team competed at the state meet with their full squad on October 19th. They had a very clean performance, one of the best this season. As a result the girls placed 5th in small group and 12th overall. The girls and coaches put so much time into this two minute and thirty second performance. Overall they only perform a total of 20 minutes in a season. From July to October they had sacrificed themselves, through black eyes and broken bones but this didn t stop them. We are proud of our cheerleaders and wish the sideline cheerleaders luck on their seasons. The team enjoys a moment before they play one of their last home games. Parkston High School runners Austin Bartelt placed 75, Lexy Leischner placed 62, Taryn Lentsch placed 118, Annalise Buenning placed 90 and Lindsey Lindsey Roth Roth earned the overall Football season wraps up Tyrese Friederich, Rylan Leischner, & Slayton Neugebauer The Parkston Trojans ended their season on Friday, October 12, in an afternoon game in Lower Brule. The Trojans kicked the ball off and quickly got a stop on defense. Then returned the punt back for a touchdown making the score 8-0. The Trojans quickly got another stop and punched it in again making the score The Trojans recovered a fumble then punched it in again making the score The the Trojans scored on a deep pass to increase the score to At that point, the second unit came into the game. It was a great experience for the young kids to get some reps against older kids. The Trojans didn t end the season the way they wanted but they have many returning juniors looking to make it back to the dome.
